It looks like quite a hot spell coming up for our part of the world for Christmas week, especially away from the coast. Ex-TC Yvette and the remains of the tropical low now over moving into SA will rapidly cross continent and into the Bight, bringing rain to the NT and SA. Further East, it will be dragging the very hot tropical air mass that gave SA and Vic a scorching Christmas over our region.

Here are examples from this morning's seven day forecast:
Code:
Sydney OH: seven consecutive 29+ peaking at 38 on the 29th
Penrith: seven consecutive 35+ peaking at 43 on the 30th
Wallsend: seven consecutive 34+ peaking at 45 on the 30th
Bathurst: seven consecutive 30+ peaking at 36 on the 29th, 30th
Canberra: six consective 32+ peaking at 35 on the 29th
Nowra: six consecutive 31+ peaking at 38 on the 29th

850 temperatures look to peak at around 24 on the 29th and 30th. The BOM Heatwave service shows a severe heatwave (extreme in parts near the coast) during the period.

Fire Danger doesn't look to bad today but it is likely to increase. Possible thinderstorms are forecast on some days.

The circulation looks to be a fairly weak N-NW, like a late Summer heatwave situation, so there won't be much resistance to the sea breeze. That's a plus for the fire situation. Humidity also looks relatively high, another plus. Both of these considerations make me a bit skeptical about some of the higher ("courageous?") forecasts for coastal locations.

A cool and probably wet change looks set to arrive on the 31st-1st, after which we seem to move into a cooler, wetter pattern, but that's a way off.

I don't like the hot weather, one reason I live in the tablelands, but a bit of hot dry weather will be good for my vineyard. Due to the wet spring there has been excessive growth in the shiraz, but the bunches are still quite small, so a bit of heat stress will stop the growing tips and hopefully keep the berries small. Small berries means a better skin/juice ratio which means better flavours.

Greg - hope all goes well for your vinyard.

If the forecast is correct for Sydney (and I have doubts as indicated above), Sydney OH will just miss out on its all time record max for December, ending at 28.4 (3.2 above the long term average), compared to 28.6 in 1990 and 2005. It will be one of only three Decembers with an average max of 28+.

The record minimum would come out at 20.1, equalling the record set in 1990 and 2.6 above the long term mean.

Some stations in our part of the State are likely to break their records.

Thanks for working that out Steve, very interesting. Will be good to see how much influence any cloud or seabreeze has on the temperatures, but certainly nights are guaranteed to be warm. If Obs Hill ends up at what you said, would that mean it will be the second warmest December on record combining min and max?

It's basically a carbon copy of yesterday here today except a little hotter. 27C at Albion Park but it's a bit over 30C here.

Does not at all surprise me that we will get the hottest December record for nights and close to it for days.

There's actually a fair amount of storm clouds around today. It's dry convection but still convection nonetheless. I expect some storms to spark up on the Southern Highlands soon. Temp is currently a hot 31.7C with a moderate NEer.

And another near Warragamba, now heading E-SE towards the Ingleburn area and maybe the coast. A lot of bubbly cumulus clouds to the West since around noon, with the Western sky now looking quite cluttered.

The BOM got today's Sydney temps right. It's probably maxed at 29 at OH, 34.9 at Penrith (although might go higher).

Interesting that Wallsend in western Newcastle is going for 45C on Friday, when most of the Lower Hunter, Maitland, Cessnock and even Singleton are all going for 42C on this day.
Unless all the heat funnels down there and peaks there, it will be on a par at best.
Still going for at least 2 days in a row over 40C, after Saturday has now been downgraded to 37C.
It is certainly going to be a hot spell regardless.
Edit: Wallsend going for 43C on Friday, so is expected to peak there.
Buladelah looks like the pick for heat though, 44C on Friday.

Thurs has been downgraded to 37C for Obs hill, now they expect NW winds before it shifts to NE/SE in the afternoon, meaning that the peak will have to happen before that swing.

Cloud is the other issue as the remnants of the tropical low drift east. (Latest GFS has every day cloudy if not overcast, Thurs might get enough clearance for proper heat provided the seabreeze stays away)

Wallsend has now been 'downgraded' to 43 in the latest forecast, compared to 42 for other centres in the Hunter away from the coast. That makes more sense. It has also toned the heat down a bit and brought the change in early on the 31st for Sydney.

Storms seem to be falling apart quickly but more are still popping up. Might get something later in the East but I'm not hopeful.

Meanwhile, GFS now shows us a new alternative weather future for 8-16 days out, cooler but probably better for the Sydney Test. Experience says that's not wirth analysing at this stage as it will flip again.

EDIT: Greg - even with the downgraded forecast heat, plus today's temps (correctly forecast), we look to be on track for the second hottest December at OH (157 years of record). The hottest would remain 1990 (20.1-28.6).

Looks as though a cell went over my place 20 minutes ago. Looks like it died not long after passing.

I'm in Darlinghurst so cannot confirm whether there was moderate rain etc. Hard to tell from radar.

Interesting Bulahdelah going for 3 days in a row above 40 degrees. Does Bula have an official weather station? I remember the School having one many years ago!!

I don't think it does. MetEye loves giving it a few degrees on surrounding areas in hot spells so I'd like to see if that's actually the case

I can remember going to school there and having some absolute stinker days, but Bula is well protected from the NE breeze from Alum Mountain which is probably close to 300 metres in height, but yeah would love to see an AWS there that's for sure!!

Closest inactive stations are Girvan State Forest and Coolongolook.
Otherwise they show Forster forecasts and stats, which are right on the coast and not a true indication.
There must be some sort of unofficial station there, as they have shown it on the local news before.

I know the school used to have a Stevenson screen many years ago, whether they still do or not, I don't know, I might have to make some enquiries!!

But Girvan would be very similar to Bula, Coolongolook is reasonably close to lake Wallis therefore it would be susceptible to a sea breeze.

I suspect what's happening is that the forecast (and analysis) system is splicing the anomalies from elsewhere onto the averages from the long-closed stations. This phenomenon shows up most dramatically on the SA Nullarbor - on very hot days there there's often an analysis 'bubble' around the former site at Cook when Nullarbor Roadhouse's anomalies are spliced onto Cook's averages.

At locations which have active stations, there's a bias-correction mechanism which offsets model forecast errors (roughly speaking, by looking at the average model bias over the last 30 days), but this doesn't work in places like Bulahdelah with no stations.

Interesting analogy, although the Cook station is a fair way from the coast.
Nullarbor Roadhouse would need a strong northerly to take out the seabreeze, and averages there would be much more moderate.
I spent a summer north of Esperance on a sheep station, and know how big those temperature gradients can be.
But Bulahdelah is intriguing and fascinating.
It seems to have a real microclimate, a real pocket protected from the seabreeze and a funneling effect between mountains to give it such intense heat.
EddyG we really do need a permanent weather station there.

Isolated storm cells developed on the Tablelands after midday but, like the other day, the cells seem to be barely moving. Towers are visible on the Western horizon from here, although the hazy atmosphere obscures them somewhat.

Warm, humid and filtered sunshine today. Looks like OH maxed at 28.6 a little while ago, with a max of 32.6 at Penrith (may go higher).

Very strange today, the winds are all over the place but are starting to become southerly/SEly along much of the coast. The winds have not exceeded 13km/h at Bellambi which is very odd for such a warm airmass and northerly winds. There was even a WNWly just earlier there but temp of only 23C. Usually in these setups you'd be expecting at least a moderate NEer by now.

Peter Konnecke, the storms are west of here in the Hunter and they are staying there so far they are very slow moving if you are under one so there would be some heavy drops of rain in them. There is one up north over the Barrington Tops I am watching,it might move south.

Only got to 33C today, a couple short of the forecast max of 35C as an easterly came in slightly early.
Upper Hunter got to 36C in Singleton and Scone though.
Tomorrow forecast is for 36C, will be interesting to see if it gets there, before the real heat for Thursday-Friday.

Same here Derek.
The NE 'er came in early and was quite gusty from about 9 am so only just cracked the 30 deg mark today. Very humid though.
Plenty of bubbling towers to the west all day but as has been mentioned previously, they were fairly stagnant so there was never a threat of any rain.

Not looking forward to the next few days. We have 36, 40, 39, 35 and 32 forecast for the next 5 days. I've conservatively taken a degree off the Richmond temps due to our altitude (180 mtrs asl)and proximity to the coast in relation to Richmond.
Not pleasant. Not much precip forecast either so the garden hose will be getting a workout on the vegie patch.

Been up at Pt Mac last few days, went for a few body surfs near lake cathie and the water was quite cool indeed, a bit of that upwelling ive recently learned about thanks to this place, a lot of beach fishermen up there knew quite a bit about it too! the first half of this storm season has been the most limp dick performance i can ever remember, sheer at 500 couldnt blow a christmas candle out most of the time, its been lacklustre to say the least, not to say parts of nsw havent done well. I took a detour on the way home from pt mac via wooton way and then booral rd to get a feel of the landscape thats so conducive to severe storm progression out west of bulahdelah and south, it was well worth it, im sure storm chasers have been out there, beautiful drive, too many trees of course, someone needs to get a chainsaw out there, but you can feel the terrain and what it does to help out the atmosphere dynamics. Had a feeling i should just park my ass in an inflatable dolphin in the colo river on the way home for any chance of big drops/electrical forks, but couldnt be bothered. As a side note, did anyone take the 4.50$ draw available in 2nd test, at least the weather is paying me back somehow, *tip, once youve got the good odds for a draw, play the situation wisely, know that captains will try for a result and break even on result at the right time whilst letting the draw ride!

Always well hydrated when relaxing while watering the vegie patch. *wink*.
In saying that, I went out about 2.30 to spray all the driveway, garden and paver weeds. Man....... it took me just under an hour and my body was like Niagara Falls when I came back inside. So humid and oppressive!! Then, the damn Melbourne weather ruined the rest of my afternoon with virtually no more cricket played.
Bloody Mexicans.

Didn't get to the forecast high of 28 - only reached 23C. Possibly due to early Cu and moderate Cb development. Looked like a big storm out Tuena way, but nothing here. It was a little sticky today but on the whole very pleasant picking cherries. Now 20C.

Has certainly been a hot few day days here, and a couple more to come. House sitting for a friend at the moment who happens to have a pool, so all is good! Maybe some precipitation later this week.

Still picking cherries here, surprised when I saw the quality and price in the supermarket. If I don't net cherries at my place I don't get any, picked up some cheap big nets from a retiring orchardist a few years ago.
I have heard there are fruit bats in Canberra this year, hope they don't get to my place, had some in 2012 after the QLD floods drove them west and south.

Good luck with the Cherries Greg.

While things are quiet I might reflect on the 2016-17 storm season to date. It seems to have been a mixed but mostly poor storm season so far, especially towards the South. From what I can see, the Central Coast and Hunter haven't done too badly.

Here are my storms so far, all experienced at or near home:

Code:
May: 1st last of 2015/16

June, July, August: none

September: 25th First of 2016/17

October: none

November: 8th, 9th, 12th, 23rd (three)

December: 5th, 8th, 20th, 24th

Criteria for counting a 'storm' are subjective. Rain plus visible lightning and/or audible thunder counts, but not distant clouds, no matter how photogenic, or a distant light show, although I take a note of these (with a count of zero). Thunder and lightning overhead or close by without rain would count, but this hasn't happened this year. Of course, I can't guarantee that I didn't sleep through any (unusual for me though) or missed a low intensity storm while busy indoors.

So in terms of number storms, not a bad season, but none of these storms were particularly intense or memorable. A poor season in terms of 'quality'.

* * * * *

Clear, sunny and humid with light breezes here, almost cool (minimum of 20.0 on the balcony earlier). The NE'er didn't stop all night and will pick up soon. It might not reach the forecast 30 in the East, but should be hot inland.

Interesting that you've had four storms during December Steve, we haven't had any here as you can see with my signature

It's been a shocking season here so far. None of those three storms that I got were particularly memorable or even direct hits.

There's heaps of fruit bats in this area Greg. They generally fly over in their hundreds around dusk. Often they perch in the top of the palm tree in the backyard, eating out what ever is at the top of the tree trunk. Some years will we get thousands that fly over from the NE sometimes spanning well over an hour.

I think today is going to get very uncomfortably humid with such a warm airmass above. Dew points got to around 22C yesterday afternoon and I think they will go even higher today- either that or the warmer airmass will mix down and give us temps above 30C.

Temp now 34.3C and rising, looks like we'll get our max after 3 pm.
This is quite common though when a Northwesterly determines the maximum, it could be between 4 and 5pm.
I'd say we'll just get to the forecast, or around 35.5C.

I thought that the bureau had overcooked maxima in the Sydney forecast when the Easterly was up and running before 8:00, but they weren"t that far wrong. Got to 29 at OH (c.f. forecast 30) and actually spot on for the outer West (Penrith and Richmond reached 37). The middle ring was less accurate (32 point something at Bankstown, Holsworthy and Olympic Park vs forecast 35 for Parramatta).

Not much convection or development apparent so far today so far, unlike yesterday. Nothing on the radar.

Looks like max was 35.3C at 1550, so just short of forecast.
Strangely nearby Tocal got a spike of 36.6C at 1610, so it is hard to predict. (although still only showing 35C as the max to 3pm).

It held quite well around 21C here in Illawara until yesterday.

This morning it was around 19C at Warilla, but a latter splash at Port Kembla and I would say 17-18C at best. Felt like ice water.

I only had to take one look at the water to know it was cold. it has a green cast instead of blue.

Penrith going for a max of 42C tomorrow and it could go even higher than that if everything is in favour of heat. Today reached a whopping 34C at Moss Vale which is absolutely insane for that area. We reached about 31C here while Albion Park hit 28C

Dead calm here, 23.5 degrees on the balcony and clear skies (at least those I can see). Sea gales have dropped right off, to be replaced by N-NW'ers in some places.

There seems to be hot air aloft, 22 at Mt Boyce (equivalent to 29 at sea level), 25 at Mangrove Mountain (27 at sea level). Even Lucas Heights (only 140 metres) is 26.

So let's see what tomorrow brings and enjoy whatever we get. Heat, sea gales, storms, whatever.

Min here this morning at 7am was 23.5. Lots of high cloud atm, will that persist and moderate the top temps today?

I find it strange that we are going for high temps, yet there will be little in the way of the standard fare for high temps, ie strong NW winds.

I think it's just the hot airmass alone that is causing such high temps even without the strong NWers, for anywhere away from the coast. Cloud will moderate temps a bit but I still expect maximums in the 40's for western Sydney.

Already 30C at my place humidity at 40%. If the humidity was lower it would feel better, 35C predicted which isn't too bad for this time of year. Still plenty of green grass around at my place so the summer hasn't been too bad so far.

The cloud is mostly the the South with a backbuilding 'finger' extending over Sydney. I would not expect the cloud to stick around all day, there should at least be some breaks. BOM stuck with 'partly cloudy' in their 9:01 update.

Melbourne was cloudy for most of yesterday but quickly warmed as the cloud broke up during the late afternoon to a max of 38.

Richmond and Penrith AWSs are now on 33. Bellambi is 31.5 in a light Eastrerly. I think that the sea breeze is trying to get going, there's not much resistance, but the West might make 40.

Penrith must be out of the cloud- 36C and rising while the rest of Sydney is low 30's.

I can't say I've ever seen Bellambi above 30C in a seabreeze but it's happening right here right now.

On about 35C and rising slowly here. 35.3 at AP and 34.8 here. The cloud seems to be thinning out a little but not clearing just yet. Still 35C with not a second of sun all day is impressive in its own right. I daresay without cloud cover it would be in the 40's right now.

The seabreeze is up and going at coastal stations near Sydney, but at this stage it's a long way short of yesterday's sea gale.

This cloud is proving surprisingly stubborn. Like recent storms, it's hardly moving.

High 30s in Western Sydney, still 35 at OH. I note that the Hunter, under sunshine, is no warmer than Western Sydney. No station has reached 39 that I can see.

EDIT: Sydney Airport is under a light Southerly 'Bay Breeze', which is why it's cooler. The AWS is tens of metres from Botany Bay.

37.2C now, 38C at Newcastle Airport and even 37C at Nobbys Head.
You know you have a strong northwesterly when you can take out the seabreeze of the 360 degree ocean exposure of Nobbys.

We've just cracked our forecast top of 37 here at Kingsgrove. Just looking at the sattelite chart, we may only get a brief period when there's no cloud cover. However the sun is making a valiant effort now to break through

Varying between full sun and cloudy. At the, it's cloudy.
A great day to sit in the air-con and watch the cricket.

There's a break in the cricket due to typical Melbourne rain, so I went to check the vegie patch, and boy were they all wilting, even though I watered them early this morning. They are all really suffering under this heat. Just gave them another drink.

Temp here has spiked up to 37.5 degs. Still alternating between cloudy and full sun.

Either I'm used to the heat or already or this heat wasn't as bad as it was made out to be? It's only cracked 38c here and was forecast to hit 42.

To me it felt like high 20's low 30's.

Well it never got past 38, and around 4:30pm it was down to 35, with a gentle SWer, now it about 33 with a SEer and full cloud.

Humidity is still up around 95%, so it feels quite muggy.

Finally cooled down here and been raining quite steadily all afternoon. Has been mid to high 30's here for nearly two weeks. Nice to see the rain.

Here at 8:45pm, full cloud, light SEer, 30 degrees. It's going to be a hot night!

I've got some windows open with a mist spray working outside the in coming breeze window...

Cloud cover has been around 90% all day here, temperature has dipped down to 29c, the only upside to the cloud was it kept the high 30's and 40's away, but with it, the humidity was neigh unbearable.

I actually had to hold the hose on trickle in my dogs mouth at a few points today because he simply could not get up to get a drink!

No breeze here tonight, still relatively warm at 27c after a top of 39c.

Hahahahaha. That was a smart arse comment Homer poke I do however agree with kizz's editing.

Today was a bit of a let down only reaching 35C. There was potential for sooo much higher and our first 40C of 2016. To rub it in, the cloud starting clearing at around sunset to partly cloudy skies. It was deadset the weirdest afternoon though. From about lunchtime until the end of the day there had hardly been a breath of wind which is so unusual in such warm weather. The calm conditions have prevailed after sunset as well but that isn't worth mentioning since it happens all the time at night.

Noted EddyG- Tocal has actually been setting the pace lately locally.
Strange the old Maitland station was often hotter than it, now it appears the reverse.
The new station looked perfectly placed for spectacular temperatures, hasn't quite happened yet.

You tell em RS!!!! wink

This weather is so unusual, looking outside it looks as bleak and calm as a day can get. It has that cold drizzly look but yet it's 28C. We had a warm min of 22C overnight. Top of 36C here expected today and hopefully this trough that is overhead (and saving us from extreme heat) will deliver a few storms. At least they are in the forecast so that is a half decent sign.

Nowra AP broke it's min record by a long shot this morning, registering 24.7C. The night was fairly warm in Sydney (even Camden managed to stay above 20) with the warmest min also being 24.7 at Penrith which is equal warmest December night on record.

Partly cloudy, filtered sunlight and 31 degrees here with very little wind.

Surprised to see on the radar a rainband extending from about the Royal National Park WNW across Sydney's South and the Blue Mountains to Orange. Doesn't seem to be much in it.

Top prediction here today was 38C, currently at 27.5C, and we just had a very light shower. Something tells me it won't make that 38C.

Right, Brightside, I was wondering if those showers shown on the radar were virga because nowhere has registered any measurable rainfall. Maybe it mostly is but some is apparently reaching the ground.

It's now solid but thin overcast here with a few gaos visible to the North. The cloud looks set to stick around for a few hours at least. Still hot and calm, around 32-33. An Easterly is just starting up at Fort Denison and a Bay breeze at the Airport. Very much a copy of yesterday.

Centres in the Hunter Valley have reached 38-40 under sunshine.

It's very warm further south as well, Nowra on 34C and Moruya Ap at 36C and judging by the satellite Nowra looks to be in broken sunshine and perhaps Moruya is almost completely sunny. Meanwhile we have full cloud cover here and temps are 24C on the coast, 29C at Albion Park with light NEers while here it is nearly calm with 31C. Very hard to judge the wind dir but it seems to be coming from the easterly quadrants as well.

Scrap that last bit, we now have a few gusts of N/NNWly breeze and temp 31.5C. My last observation was about 15 min ago, I should've rechecked before submitting this post.

"Looks" like a bow echo coming off the snowy mountains, hard to say as mountains in way of Canberra radar, and useless Wagga radar does not give true indication.

May know better as it gets off ranges?

Sun's breaking through, although filtered through thin cloud, after an absence of about 4 hours. Temps in Western Sydney are on the move, up to 34-35. It also looks like the seabreeze is being pushed back, at least South of Bondi.

The 'bow wave' - that roughly Boomerang-shaped chain of storms moving South of the ACT? It seems to be dispersing.

Looks like our peak was 40.1C at 1520.
Other than that our December record minimum will be set tonight at Maitland Airport (based on 1 month data), as it is forecast for 25C.
Average max for the month so far is 31.4C, and 31.6C at Tocal (not a record), which will go up again after tomorrow.

30.1 here still.

Bathurst AP webcam starting to show that line of storms approaching from the south west. I'm hopeful (but not confident) of a rumble or two later on.
This trough seems to be very slow moving eastwards. I'm just not sure how much firepower it will contain overnight.

I don't want to jinx it but our prospects for stormage along the coast are looking fairly decent. We haven't had a setup so favourable to the coast yet this season. No inversion, hot but humid as well. And for once we actually have WIND in the mid levels.

There's been a Severe Thunderstorm Warning during the afternoon for a broad band of the state extending from the South Coast to the far NW of NSW (and the storms probably don't stop at the Vic, SA and Qld borders like the map says). The BOM shift the band to the North East every couple of hours and are forecasting possible late / possible early storms overnight, so we might be woken by thunder.

The way the storms are showing on the radar west of parkes implies they are pretty significant storms. Just a matter of how far east they get.

Solid 2 storms here at the olds place in Vincentia, Jervis Bay (which is a few km's SE of Huskisson on the radar). First storm rushed up from Ulludulla on dusk. Numerous CG's and 1 flang, a few solid gusts and a quick fire 30mm. Second storm followed hot on its heels and came in from the NW but died as it approached. 5mm and a nice light show. Awesome way to end a muggy day. Hoping that Bathurst scores tonight.

Ahh reminds me of when I was in Singapore, lovely stuff. The only difference is in Singapore it's almost impossible to sleep without aircon as the DP rarely drops below 26C laugh

3rd consecutive very warm night, doesn't happen often.

Southerly moving through Sydney's South now. Not the main change, just one of these 'sneaky Southerlies'. It dropped Sydney Airport by nearly 6 degrees. It passed through the Illawarra earlier this evening. It probably won't reach Newcastle.

Hi Steve,

When will the 'main change" come by Southern Sydney tomorrow in your opinion?

I'm not sure that there is a 'main change' as such. I think there's a small low off the coast of Sydney now, which will soon dissipate. After that, early tomorrow morning, a broad trough will move over our part of the world, swinging winds to the SE quarter, but that wil just be hot air sloshing over the Tasman (meteorlogical term) and returning. Depending upon cloud cover, it might be warmer than the 28 forecast. On New Years Day, maybe in the afternoon, things will cool down with showers, then a few days of genuinely cool weather (I don't believe the 25 degree forecast).

Anyway, we shall see.

Minimum temp 24.6C by the look of it.
Now on the rise again.
Yes a very Singaporean night Long Road Home, aircon on til midnight, then someone woke up to put it on again before 5am.
Having to sleep with aircon is annoying.

Very warm night here also (in comparison to usual), only getting down to 22.4C. Could not get any lower than that because the dew points was so high, at about 23C at one point which is just nuts. Still a very humid 26/21 at Albion Park while here it is a slightly cooler 25C.

Looks like BOM might have agreed with you when they udated the forecast at 9:29AM. Looks A Southerly seems to have established itself in Sydney's East between about 8:00 and 9:00. The outer West is still hot, having reached 30-32. Meanwhile, places in the Upper Hunter look set for a very hot day, 34 degrees at Merriwa (375 metres) and Scone (222).

My minimum was 24.6, it's now 26.5 and dropping.

The 22.4C mentioned above is actually the warmest December night on record for Albion Park.

It should still be pretty hot today, going to take a lot to flush out such persistent heat and humidity. As you can see, the southerly has had a very limited impact, except for right on the coast where it is actually rather cool- only 21C at Bellambi.

I dare say the party is just about over for us now. Some last drinks today for the west and the Hunter and then that's it. It was a nice Xmas present to get a spell of warmth that would be considered normal in many mid latitude places in the northern hemisphere.

Such a shame there was so much cloud; we could have landed some real scorchers in Sydney but, sadly, missed out.

I have real fears that Steve777 is correct with his view that BoM are being optimistic about next week's temps in Sydney. Lots of "cloudy" and "showers" in the forecast for next week when the third test is on.

You can see the 'fungus' spreading up the coast on the vis sat pic (as kizz would say) laugh

Anyone got historical records of the last time Syd got rain on new years day? Expecting up to 25mm, that has to be unheard of.

I do know Jan 1st 1947 had a supercell with 8cm+ hail which injured a lot of people on Bondi beach and did a significant amount of damage around the metro.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1947_Sydney_hailstorm

Very interesting read

Yes some strange weather the last few days.

Min here this morning was 27, now with a SE blowing it is 31.5. Quite warm for that wind direction seeing how its been blowing from that direction almost all day.

Yes RS (excuse the use of those obscene initials), it is quite hot here even in a S or SE airflow.
Today is decidedly uncomfortable outside. The "southerly" is warm. Humidity high. The stinging sun makes it feel even hotter.
On the other hand, the far south coast is enjoying much cooler temps - all in the low 20's with some APP temps in the teens. Possibly that is the influence of that secondary southerly that Steve777 mentioned earlier.
Even though a few small cells have popped up on the radar, I can't see much or any action today. The sky is looking very dry.

It's currently 29.6 here with a gusty SE'er.
I'm inside in the air-con, doing the ironing, while watching a Rick Stein marathon. Quite a pleasant Saturday afternoon indoors.

Now nearly full overcast here after being quite sunny until a couple of hours ago. It's still warm, about 26-27.

I caught a glimpse of bubbly towers to NW through the 'fungus' about a hour ago. That would be the cells in the Macdonald valley area (North of Wiseman's Ferry).

OH snuck in another 30 this afternoon, the 7th this month and 28th for the year, nearly double the annual average of about 15. OH is a warm site in a Southerly, especially if it's sunny.

That southerly scud has finally started to cool things a little. Finally becoming mostly overcast here - mostly just in the past half an hour. Before that, the sun was still beating down and hot.
It's still very muggy and the temp has only dropped slightly to 27.7 currently.
This has been the "hottest" southerly I can ever recall.

Got to 36C as per forecast.
Apparently it did get to 41C yesterday, (last time I looked it was 40.1C), must have been brief spike I missed.
Average max for the month now 31.6C for Maitland, 31.7C for Tocal.
Now a comfortable 29.5C, much better than it has been.

25C definitely is more pleasant Homer, a tiny bit of elevation helps.
Now 28.4C here, although fully ducted aircon is staying on.
Did a bit of work in the garage today (which is connected to the house, but no aircon), just throwing out hoards of old rubbish, shredding stuff etc, but much better in controlled temps.

My ducted air-con is still on as well. I just cannot stand the humidity, plus I'm slaving over a hot stove!!
I'll open the windows and doors after dinner and let the cooler breeze in then.

I'm the same here with an attached garage with direct ingress to the house but I always keep the door closed as it gets so hot out there. I did some things in the garage today and was sweating like a live rock star.

Unexpectedly, the skies over Sydney have largely cleared, don't know for how long. Still around 24 and humid but the wind has dropped significantly.

December was quite a hot month overall for Sydney and probably much/most of the state. The BOM will write up its usual detailed report in a couple of days, but as a general indication OH has finished at 20.0 - 28.2, respectively the second highest minimum and third highest maximum on record (158 years). The average of 24.1 would be the second highest after 1990 (20.1 - 28.6, both the record).

Compared to 1961-1990 averages, the min-max anomalies were 2.0 and 2.7 respectively, with the mean being about 2.4 above average.

Given that the difference between Sydney and Brisbane averages is about 3 degrees, 2.4 is bigger than it sounds.

Another slightly odd thing, it wasn't a particularly sunny month like the record December of 2005, as I recall a like bright and sunny Christmas holiday of childhood memory with probably close to 10 hours sunshine a day. Sunshine this December will have finished at about 7.5 hours per day, slightly below the average of 7.9.

Yeah Steve. Has been particularly cloudy this month. It seems that no matter what type of weather we were getting there was cloud. Many a hot day has been spoilt by cloud.

And Homer, I was reading the last few posts and I was picking up a heat hating vibe. Never picked you for someone who hated the heat.

I did say the cooler temps tonight were nice, but I'll get sick of it in a day. That's mainly because I don't enjoy the same weather day in day out, it's nice to have a change. But no heat hater vibe from me. wink

Just read over you post now in detail Steve (rather than scanning) and yes it has been a very Brisbane-esque December. Average for max here was 28.1C and min was 17.9 which doesn't seem high but was nearly 2 above and the warmest on record for December at Albion Park. I've got a feeling that it's going to be a very hot January as well, but obviously not during the week. I've been told that there is heat expected for mid January by someone on another group so it would be good if that eventuates. I want to get a 40C max this summer, and we've already had perhaps up to 4 opportunities for it (including the last 2 days) but cloud has spoilt the party every time.

I wish everyone a happy new year and hopefully a great 2017. Personally, I'm wishing for a less stressful and less pressured year. I also want to gain the motivation and confidence to get off my ass and start setting up my adult life. For now I'm going to drink lots of booze and worry about the new year when it comes. grin

26.2c was my overnight min last night. Today temp got to 33c before the weak as p1ss southerly arrived, the southerly was that weak the scud cloud was about six hours behind it, anyway its still currently 25c, could be another comfortable night of 20c+ coming up as there is very little wind and a nice blanket of scud.

Just the odd flash of distant lightning can be seen tonight, would be nice to see a mother nature fireworks display!!

And WR, you're a little pisspot poke , mate enjoy your night!! You're only young once!! smile

And Happy New Year to everyone!! cheers

The signs were looking much stronger for a hot Jan a few weeks back but have eased off quite a bit recently. With the way the first week is looking I think we can expect more of the same over the rest of Jan, IMO. But, then again mother nature can surprise. cool

HNY Folks! smile

Happy New Year to everyone here. May 2017 bring everone their favourite weather - heat, cold, sun, wind, photogenic clouds, rain, snow and (everone would agree with this one) storms.

GFS and weather.com are sugesting some heat around the 8th to the 11th but it's early days. NAEFS has a warm signal for our part of the world for the second week of January: NAEFS

And WR, have fun but take care with the booze. I've had more than was good for me over the years and the world you face as a young adult looks to be much less forgiving than the one I had to deal with.

Sage advice Steve777.
You are right in regards to the pressures on kids today compared to our days.

By all means WR, enjoy your drinks, but it's the binge drinking that seems to be the problems these days. That's what leads to trouble.
I had an apprentice working for me a few years ago, and at my annual Christmas party, where I shouted my workers a feed and drinks at a pub, he was the only one that went stupid and drank beyond his capacity. I drove him home and walked him to the front door of his parents house where he was still living because I was so worried about him.
I know it's exciting getting to the legal drinking age, but fair dinkum, this kid, (who was a nice kid) just went silly.
I have no doubts that WR is a responsible young bloke.
It's clear to see on this website.

smile

Sorry to get off topic.
It's now a pleasant 23.4 deg's. Fully overcast and no breeze. Still quite muggy outside.

That's exactly right Steve777 & Homer!!
And its no secret that I do enjoy a few drinks. Luckily for me Its not copious amounts!!

Well its tried hard to rain here. I'm fairdinkum struggling to keep my grass brown atm, despite some healthy falls a fortnight or so ago!!
Hopefully some decent showers will occur this coming week, hopefully at night, so we can have some cricket played!!

Seems to have plateaued here now at 27.2C, I don't think it'll make 31C as per forecast.
Still quite humid, and airon on in low fan mode.
Milder again tomorrow, although travelling up to Tamworth in the arvo for work this week- where it looks ok for the week.

I've always been a heat hater. You know that.

Forget it mate. Was just trying to have a bit of fun playing the heat versus cold thing.

Spent half the day buying the wife a new computer and doing the groceries. Now just as I stepped out to work in the backyard some drops of rain start falling. Looks like more on the way for Sydney.

Just got back from Sydney, fairly steady drizzle here but only 3mm. 20C but the weather station says it got to 29 earlier with a min of 16 last night. A bit of rain would help to plump up the blackberries, I love homemade blackberry jam.

Thanks everyone for the sound advice. I had a fun time last night, went to a party and had a quite a few drinks, went to bed at 5am and I'm currently hungover. I forgot to drink water last night, ooops.. Hope everyone had an awesome night like me!!

I enjoy cool changes like this after the heat. It's really annoying when it gets cold again after a hot spell but even today is still quite mild. Currently 25C with 21C dew point which rather nice. Would feel hot and sticky on a sunny day though I reckon.

Currently 24.7C, and also apparently "feels like" 24.7C as well - it is nice when they marry up.
Dew point is 20.2C, humidity 76% which is quite high.
Looks like the hot spell is over, for another week anyway, and possibly next weekend.
