EC is onboard with the gulf low now, but as you can see in the below image, the trough sweeping across SA is unable to capture it and push it SE:

Still plenty of time for change though.

Any sunshine coasters and or Buderim-ites able to pass on actual 'in my rain gauge' rainfall totals from today ? I see 15mm so far for Maroochydore and 32mm for Nambour

On the main EC website charts it shows a small upper high between it and the upper trough preventing it from going SE initially. I think GFS is the same it starts moving SW then swings back to the SE a few days later but mostly afftecting western QLD/NSW/NT big time.

Yep, Now it looks highly convincing now that both GFS and EC has this gulf low moving west. "QLD the big deflective of tropical systems" if it were to happen in the Coral sea it will go straight to the grave yard... anyways, The upper trough should increase the prospect of showers or storms with the passage in a weeks time though.

Just wishing you all a very merry Christmas (or what's left of it) from here in NYC.

Below is a shot I took a few hours ago at Rockefeller Centre at midnight.
The ice skating rink is in the lower left while the famous Christmas tree, a Norway Spruce close to 30m high brought in from a town in New York state is on the right.

As forecast, yet another year here without a white xmas with a continuing run of dry, milder than normal days and nights. From memory, last time there was an official white xmas here was 7 years ago... although white xmas's here can be pretty hit 'n miss with only around 14% of more recent years having a white xmas.
I was hoping against hope that the seasonal forecasts before I left for the possibility of higher than normal temps for this month for the Northeastern US would be wrong but a bit disappointingly, it looks like they've been on the money so far with a stubborn Australian style ridge and the jet curving far to the north (got to 14C here on Sunday which was even warmer than many Melbourne winter days). Central/northern/western US copping it from a big winter storm though and possible severe thunderstorms for some of central parts.

Anyway hope you all had a great day today.

Just like yesterday, today was a warm, humid and mostly sunny day. Tomorrow looks exactly the same. The typical good weather you often get around Christmas here.
I hope everyone had a great Christmas!

I was going to post this last night. It was pretty cool at Margate with the showers and wind but I really enjoyed it, instead of sweating like mad it was very a pleasant temperature and the reason why is:

Queensland weather: Christmas Day 2016 the coldest in 40 years
NATHAN TORPEY, The Courier-Mail
December 26, 2016 12:00am

QUEENSLANDERS have partied through the coldest Christmas Day in more than 40 years as mild and wet conditions kept the mercury well below average.

Brisbane’s maximum temperature of 25.5C at 4.52pm was its lowest Christmas since 1970 when it was 24.2C.

The Bureau of Metrology said the 23.5C temperature in Brisbane at 12.30pm was the coldest across the country at that time, beating even the notoriously chilly Hobart.

In stark contrast was Adelaide, where residents experienced the hottest Christmas Day in 75 years with temperatures of up to 40.3C.

Inaccuracy to be expected from the media I guess. Adelaide actually topped 40.8 degs.

Thanks Ken for these wonderful photos, looks like you are having a great time in NYC! Currently 27.7C and 58% RH. Light breeze and sunny. Perfect Boxing Day weather. Ants in my kitchen today so hoping this is a good sign of some coming rain smile

You're welcome Mamma Tus and yep I sure am. 4th time here and still not sick of it.

Still appears to be a somewhat enhanced rainfall signal between 7 and 14 days from now (this time, extending a bit further south than last time) - one of the ensemble outputs of >25mm rainfall probabilities for that period below:

Nice pics Ken, we were at exactly the same place at our brief stay in NY before we headed to Canada. Did you do the top of the rock observation deck? Would have been a fantastic view at night, unfortunately when I was up there it was a cloudy, hazy day with naff all visibility!

Back on topic, geez this rain event had better come off and put an end to the green drought. For some reason we have been in the ultimate donut hole this season, everywhere else has been clobbered by severe storms and big downpours, yet we are flat out getting 10mm in one sitting. Bundy 140mm o'nite, how awesome would a total like that be, fat chance though in this dusty hell hole. cry
