For me today, basically got onto those Burra cells shortly after initiation, decided to punch through to get to the north. Was expecting strong winds however I wasn't expecting the strongest winds I have ever seen!

Drove into it and could see the rain curtains rapidly moving across the road, I get flashed by a car that had just come through it, 30 seconds later the visibility was deadset less than a few metres, with sidewards spray and very heavy rain, a textbook microburst.
Winds were 100km minimum, maybe even edging towards 120km was absolute madness. After that passed was treated to over an hour of constantly backforming cells on the flank, with many Cg's. During a particularly strong downburst I decided to punch once again (back into the township of Mount Bryan). Didn't get nearly as strong winds that time, but got flanged something shocking, many bolts within 500m, closest was sub 100m on the road in front of me.

Seeing the cells moving onto the ranges I didn't stick around as I had a feeling the fords would go under and they did it seems! I took off following an OFB from this complex to the north, which interacted with cells north of Jamestown, forming a briefly rotating ragged base, before many more Cg's started coming down.

Ummed and ah'd once this died over the cells further to the north (aka Carrieton way) but decided against it, in hindsight wouldn't have been a bad idea.

One of those days where pics won't really do it justice, but some quite spectacular, and tall lightning bolts around. One of the more enjoyable storm days this season for sure!

how mcuh rain do you think they got?
no AWS nearby

Honestly couldn't even guess, the rain came down in very heavy bursts in random areas. I'd suggest rain rates were briefly 200mm/h + at times.

If we're talking Burra here, a friend who lives in the town recorded 13.5mm in a very short space of time. Their front yard looks like a small creek. smile

I smell another fizzer for here. The cells to the SW just before are now nothing more than an enthralling deck of cirrus. sick I think I'll have to set up a fizzer jar, a dollar for every fizzer. By the end of the season I can retire lol

Looks like GFS was right on the money in its HUGE DOWNGRADES of LI values between yesterday and today. mad Another failwhale fizzer to add to the tally. Screw it, today is done and dusted, nothing more to see here. NEXT

Atleast there is some fantastic summer heat to look forward to. The inland heat will be interesting to watch, ACCESS progging close to 30C 850 temps and BOM forecasting multiple 30C+ lows for places like Oodnadatta.

Kym and I ended up as far north as Carrieton. Great day from the start when we called the initiation perfectly at Burra, parking ourselves at the lookout in anticipation. Amazing to watch the lifespan of a little cu go to a massive storm complex.
Even got a stunning lightning show of the storms out towards Yunta and the NE on dusk and then after dark. Managed to get a few bolts on camera as well.

edit: BTW, should see a few isolated showers about still from convection inland today, but certainly not to yesterday's standard.

noarlunga forecast was for 37 and has made 39, sweet, (as i
say that from my 23 room)
gunna cook tea outside tonight, not on a barbie or webber, i'm
just gunna take it outside and leave it there for half an hour.

OT.....
i started to host my pics with photobucket, dunno about anyone
else but jeeze what a headcopulate. its so slow it's like
being on dialup and the ads, there's more garbage to wade
through than the wingfield dump. was at the point where i
couldnt even load or link pics. i ended up giving them the
flicker, that's nice and user friendly.
consequently its delayed my chase post, get there eventually.

Photobucket is a massive heap of maggot infested dung. Choked with more ads and popups than a porno site which not only eat your data but slow the bloody site to a fetid crawl. mad mad mad

Gxymn. your opinion of photobucket is accurate and appropriate.
thanks guys, i thought it was just me, i never imagined a
site could be so bad, yer i nearly jumped onto imgur, after
tipping photobucket into the bin i tried google+ photos it
is good but..... i had all hell trying to get a direct jpg
link for forum posting and it wouldn't do it so then i tried
flickr, it seems good quick and easy to upload, and simply
copy and paste link location and voil. pisa p......pie.
so imagur just missed by a nose but thx all for your
thoughts.
just so this post is not totally off topic.......
still might get a flash and rumble tomorrow night
moreso coastal south of adelaide cbd.

looking forward to a big drive the first thing i noticed
when i looked at the sky at sunrise was how nice it looked
even though i knew nothing was going to happen here.

this just before i left, i have a soft spot for these
because i have some appliances by the same name.

on my way to morgan there was still cupious amounts of water
on the side of the road from the system the week before.
this picture taken not far from morgan on the B81 thiele
highway looking west.

grabbed some grub and staged just out of morgan on the B64
goyder highway waiting for sheet to happen. from what i
could see things were going to initiate around central mid
north and i wanted to be in position to get some shots of
initiation.
this is the cell at burra just starting to pump.

she's a wagon.......

after getting a few more shots i decided to head up toward
the burra cell as it matured to see if there were any
decent base features to be had but sadly not low based
enough for anything decent. i staged about 25k out of
burra to get some more pics and assess my next move.
this photo looking west is the first of three cells to
form south of the main burra core.

this pic is looking nw on the other side of the burra core
and shows initiation of the orroroo cell.

looking to the ne this pic shows the initiation of the
no mans land cell.

it's a pity the burra anvil was in the way, that no
mans land cell developed into one sexy looking beast.

i eventually decided to go to burra and get rained on.
ended up staging on a quiet n/s running side road coupla
Ks before burra and catch the southern core as it came
over the hills. some nice CGs and one good genuine flang
plenty of rolling thunder and rain with nice big drops
but nothing i'd jump up and down about. this pic a small
creek next to the main road.

i went into burra as the second cell went over and when i
checked radar and saw a third cell decided to go back out
and have a final go before heading home, i had previously
decided burra was my maximum north point.
this is a pic of the 3rd cell looking west as the RFB
starts to open up.

continued.......

......from previous

looking north to the backside of the main burra cell

so another look atradar and sat and i now decide to move
on up, looking too juicy to not go and dip my toe in.
get to mount bryan and find this.......

not quite what i ment by dipping my toes in but what
the hell, anyway not as bad as it looks, could ride
a pushbike through that. anyway....
halfway to hallet and the southern side of the jamestown
cell was going off bigtime, big fat pulsing CGs about
every half minute or so. pity it wasn't dark. looking nnw

got one good flang in front of me just before hallett
(note to self.....get a dashcam) and enjoyed the
downpour until it finished. looked at the radar and thought
nup, like i said before , where do you stop? darwin?
so i spun tail and hightailed it outta there.
on the way back i could see the mallee was going up.
looking se from mt bryan

it developed into something similar to but not quite as
sexy as the no mans land cell and was short lived.
looking se from south of burra.

after that it was all over rover and time to knuckle down
and drive. a few extra pics i consider oddities worth
an eyeball or three.
this one also taken south of burra the same time as the
last one, this is looking north to the bottom of the
jamestown cell i just came from. nice back shoot

here's another one, this ended up being the no mans
land cell, what is it with these side shooting clouds?
can someone tell me what is going on here?

lots of snow virga like this.....

and finally here it is, this is my stormchasing wtf
picture of the week........no comment.
