i'll be brief on this for starters..........
been watching this since the last event but things have
been marginal at best looking sometimes like being a non
event and not worth starting a thread about
the models are becoming a bit clearer now, being only 2 days
out thurs. is looking good for storms with the mid north and
iron triangle in for another dose. winds are light right
through to 500 which makes for good zombification and the
upper winds have come to the party and are neutral to
divergant. after 4 days of playing government the models
are now coming into alignment and ramping up nicely, friday
and saturday will be a decent dose of heat with a late change
and possible showers and storm on sat.

Yea sfc trough and upper trough combine with classic NE infeed on thurs so afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, chiefly N of Adelaide though and also most likely east of the ranges, bar perhaps NE ranges late. Bulk of ranges at this stage I feel will not be unstable enough and be a touch too dry and be washed out with seabreeze and ridge air from the south. Best convergence east of Murray over the Mallee out to the border, up into Riverland (Moragn/Waik/Renmark) no mans land and Upper Mid North especially...Peterborough/Jamestown etc. Might be a battle for the Adelaide plains but we shall see. Moisture is better the further inland one goes and that could be the difference.

thanks TS,
this GFS 12z run has good cape over lofty ranges, but like
you say it's late in the day and what with light winds all
the way to 500 that sea breeze should be firing on all
cylinders , it just depends on whether it wipes the cape
out or interacts with it to create some boundary uplift,
the sounding has nice cold uppers and a parcel line wide
enough to drive a truck up, if it does go up it'll be
explosive imo.
if it was earlier in the day i'd certainly be sitting at
murray bridge but it's too risky for something that may
turn out marginal or not at all.
at this stage i,m going to stage at morgan and sit with my
snout in the trough while i wait for something to happen,
models are averaging peterburough for startup but that's
variable out to 100km radius, and that's only as models
prog atm. cape bullseyes and other parameter hotspots vary
from run to run so it's just a matter of just looking at
the big pic and worrying about bullseyes on the day.
tomorrow mornings 12z run will be the decider as to where
to finally stage.

GFS come back to EC now and ACCESS-R did so at 00z so bit more realistic now. General line of afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms NE of about Whyalla/Gawler/Meningie, especially moreso out over no mans land and the border areas and Upper North around Peterborough/Jamestown still. Not convinced about much around Adelaide or even the ranges, poss N ranges still about it for now, see if a touch more moisture can inject and we can one down over the suburbs.

Yeah looks great down South TH I do agree, aided by a weak ULD we'll be in for something today. And also IMO the ranges especially down South and out towards Coorong will go also.

Love the cake reference, I love cake grin

At morgan now, cells firing south of the river and well into
vic, early stuff going strong for now, clouds are low topped
and cluttered and cupious amounts of haze.
Some development near robertstown looks like its about to
go off. Hope it does, I'm front and centre for that one as it
drifts east.

The beast at burra looks impressive from a distance but
having driven up to it looking for maybe some decent base
features it's very underwhelming, at least from my se side
anyway.
But then again it is only 1,30

Classic leaning lady trace as I call it today, aggressive upper cooling and lovely lapse rates. No surprise seeing the castellanus this morn and certainly the way things are getting up from the sfc. Nasty evaporative cooling potential for microbursts today and also flash flooding. Borderline large hail in stronger storms as well.

Well tomorrow and Saturday conditions are going to be perfect for the makings of a decent late arvo/evening storm down my neck of the woods with Kalangadoo looking to hit 39 degrees on Saturday but wouldn't put a pass that it will get to 40 or even a tad above

As for storm strength and potential to be severe late saturday arvo/evening i would give it a 50/50 chance pending on which way the prevailing winds are blowing at the time of formation although given that were forecast to have a SW wind change of 15-20 kms/h might either make it weaker to maintain the intensity

So at the moment its a wait and see situation

For me today, basically got onto those Burra cells shortly after initiation, decided to punch through to get to the north. Was expecting strong winds however I wasn't expecting the strongest winds I have ever seen!

Drove into it and could see the rain curtains rapidly moving across the road, I get flashed by a car that had just come through it, 30 seconds later the visibility was deadset less than a few metres, with sidewards spray and very heavy rain, a textbook microburst.
Winds were 100km minimum, maybe even edging towards 120km was absolute madness. After that passed was treated to over an hour of constantly backforming cells on the flank, with many Cg's. During a particularly strong downburst I decided to punch once again (back into the township of Mount Bryan). Didn't get nearly as strong winds that time, but got flanged something shocking, many bolts within 500m, closest was sub 100m on the road in front of me.

Seeing the cells moving onto the ranges I didn't stick around as I had a feeling the fords would go under and they did it seems! I took off following an OFB from this complex to the north, which interacted with cells north of Jamestown, forming a briefly rotating ragged base, before many more Cg's started coming down.

Ummed and ah'd once this died over the cells further to the north (aka Carrieton way) but decided against it, in hindsight wouldn't have been a bad idea.

One of those days where pics won't really do it justice, but some quite spectacular, and tall lightning bolts around. One of the more enjoyable storm days this season for sure!

how mcuh rain do you think they got?
no AWS nearby

Honestly couldn't even guess, the rain came down in very heavy bursts in random areas. I'd suggest rain rates were briefly 200mm/h + at times.

If we're talking Burra here, a friend who lives in the town recorded 13.5mm in a very short space of time. Their front yard looks like a small creek. smile

I smell another fizzer for here. The cells to the SW just before are now nothing more than an enthralling deck of cirrus. sick I think I'll have to set up a fizzer jar, a dollar for every fizzer. By the end of the season I can retire lol

Looks like GFS was right on the money in its HUGE DOWNGRADES of LI values between yesterday and today. mad Another failwhale fizzer to add to the tally. Screw it, today is done and dusted, nothing more to see here. NEXT

Atleast there is some fantastic summer heat to look forward to. The inland heat will be interesting to watch, ACCESS progging close to 30C 850 temps and BOM forecasting multiple 30C+ lows for places like Oodnadatta.

Kym and I ended up as far north as Carrieton. Great day from the start when we called the initiation perfectly at Burra, parking ourselves at the lookout in anticipation. Amazing to watch the lifespan of a little cu go to a massive storm complex.
Even got a stunning lightning show of the storms out towards Yunta and the NE on dusk and then after dark. Managed to get a few bolts on camera as well.

edit: BTW, should see a few isolated showers about still from convection inland today, but certainly not to yesterday's standard.

noarlunga forecast was for 37 and has made 39, sweet, (as i
say that from my 23 room)
gunna cook tea outside tonight, not on a barbie or webber, i'm
just gunna take it outside and leave it there for half an hour.

OT.....
i started to host my pics with photobucket, dunno about anyone
else but jeeze what a headcopulate. its so slow it's like
being on dialup and the ads, there's more garbage to wade
through than the wingfield dump. was at the point where i
couldnt even load or link pics. i ended up giving them the
flicker, that's nice and user friendly.
consequently its delayed my chase post, get there eventually.

Gxymn. your opinion of photobucket is accurate and appropriate.
thanks guys, i thought it was just me, i never imagined a

tipping photobucket into the bin i tried google+ photos it
is good but..... i had all hell trying to get a direct jpg
link for forum posting and it wouldn't do it so then i tried
flickr, it seems good quick and easy to upload, and simply
copy and paste link location and voil. pisa p......pie.
so imagur just missed by a nose but thx all for your
thoughts.
just so this post is not totally off topic.......

looking forward to a big drive the first thing i noticed
when i looked at the sky at sunrise was how nice it looked
even though i knew nothing was going to happen here.

this just before i left, i have a soft spot for these
because i have some appliances by the same name.

on my way to morgan there was still cupious amounts of water
on the side of the road from the system the week before.
this picture taken not far from morgan on the B81 thiele
highway looking west.

grabbed some grub and staged just out of morgan on the B64
goyder highway waiting for sheet to happen. from what i
could see things were going to initiate around central mid
north and i wanted to be in position to get some shots of
initiation.
this is the cell at burra just starting to pump.

she's a wagon.......

after getting a few more shots i decided to head up toward
the burra cell as it matured to see if there were any
decent base features to be had but sadly not low based
enough for anything decent. i staged about 25k out of
burra to get some more pics and assess my next move.
this photo looking west is the first of three cells to
form south of the main burra core.

this pic is looking nw on the other side of the burra core
and shows initiation of the orroroo cell.

looking to the ne this pic shows the initiation of the
no mans land cell.

it's a pity the burra anvil was in the way, that no
mans land cell developed into one sexy looking beast.

i eventually decided to go to burra and get rained on.
ended up staging on a quiet n/s running side road coupla
Ks before burra and catch the southern core as it came
over the hills. some nice CGs and one good genuine flang
plenty of rolling thunder and rain with nice big drops
but nothing i'd jump up and down about. this pic a small
creek next to the main road.

i went into burra as the second cell went over and when i
checked radar and saw a third cell decided to go back out
and have a final go before heading home, i had previously
decided burra was my maximum north point.
this is a pic of the 3rd cell looking west as the RFB
starts to open up.

continued.......

......from previous

looking north to the backside of the main burra cell

so another look atradar and sat and i now decide to move
on up, looking too juicy to not go and dip my toe in.
get to mount bryan and find this.......

not quite what i ment by dipping my toes in but what
the hell, anyway not as bad as it looks, could ride
a pushbike through that. anyway....
halfway to hallet and the southern side of the jamestown
cell was going off bigtime, big fat pulsing CGs about
every half minute or so. pity it wasn't dark. looking nnw

got one good flang in front of me just before hallett
(note to self.....get a dashcam) and enjoyed the
downpour until it finished. looked at the radar and thought
nup, like i said before , where do you stop? darwin?
so i spun tail and hightailed it outta there.
on the way back i could see the mallee was going up.
looking se from mt bryan

it developed into something similar to but not quite as
sexy as the no mans land cell and was short lived.
looking se from south of burra.

after that it was all over rover and time to knuckle down
and drive. a few extra pics i consider oddities worth
an eyeball or three.
this one also taken south of burra the same time as the
last one, this is looking north to the bottom of the
jamestown cell i just came from. nice back shoot

here's another one, this ended up being the no mans
land cell, what is it with these side shooting clouds?
can someone tell me what is going on here?

lots of snow virga like this.....

and finally here it is, this is my stormchasing wtf
picture of the week........no comment.

A few quick ones from me of a reasonably strong storm which moved directly over the Mount Bryan township, they had 67mm to 9am, apparently most of which fell in about 40 minutes. Was some amazing lightning dropping out of this, the high bases meant the bolts were enormous. I core punched this cell and had 10 or so sub 1km bolts, awesome stuff.

As the new RFBs developed to the north very heavy downbursts hit the ranges.

A potent microburst.

A large RFB is about to give way right over the town of Mount Bryan. The rainshafts had incredible details to them.

I'll have some more up eventually.

Geez, great pics there Markus and TH! Re photobucket, they used to be usable and the thing is I am used to the format, but nowadays, the ad spam is out of control and nothing but a grubby attempt to reach into our pockets for their "premium" product. The ad infestation in every form of media these days is out of control. Sometimes on my phone I'll look up a website and suddenly it redirects to ads that vibrate the phone that I cant get out of and have to close the browser. A deadly strain of AIDS on the bastard cretins that do this.

Adelaide's temps are making me smile atm, 34.0C at Kent Town at 10:20pm grin Temps gone up here aswell, 30.9C on an outdoor temp sensor (not at home atm).

Courtesy to what i was saying yesterday about Kalangadoo going for 40 degrees with a possibility of cracking that mark has kinda come back to bite me in the rear as tomorrows temp is 1 degree hotter than above mentioned forecast temp

Nonetheless tomorrow arvo looks very promising in terms of storm potential given the current muggy weather outside and adding into the mix tomorrows extreme heat and windy conditions are definitely a perfect combination for a nasty storm

i wouldnt be getting too worked up about any nasty
storms RS, anything that does fire will be high based
low topped and weak as, forecast soundings are saying
to me forget it sunshine, look elsewhere.
GFS has the trough ceduna pt lincoln 10 30 am
cleve to kingscote 130pm
whyalla adelaide keith at 4:30pm
pt augusta morgan pinaroo at 730pm
coober pedy renmark at 10 30 pm
pwats are 40mm you'd think it would go spare but the

WOW, overnight minimum was supposed to be 28 instead it's
over 32, that's a record for me, previous best was 31
degrees at naracoorte at 5:30 in the morning on jan 2nd in
the early nineties. i video'd the thermometer because that
was the day me and some mates were going to goondiwindi for
a week pig shooting. it was hot though, we stopped at parks
for a break and lunch and it was over 40, stepping out of
the air conditioned sahara was like stepping into an oven.
i think it was '92 but not sure, i do remember there was a
minivan with 8 asian people in it going to cairns for a
holiday for a week parked behind us and they had no air
conditioning poor buggers and i also remember we had to
tell them they were not going to get there because there
was major flooding between i think brisbane-rockhampton
and no one was going anywhere up there for a few days
at least. it was all over the news but these people never
saw it. maybe someone can remember which year that was.

Thanks for sharing your pics everyone. Some lovely stuff there. I ended up doing a loop to Jamestown, Whyte Yarcowie, Peterborough and back home though I never intended going that far. Always seemed to be playing catch up. I was on Mt Lock north of Jamestown at sundown when the 'Yunta' storms Tim mentioned coloured up. There was another cell off to my right in the distance I guessed was around Clare or thereabouts. Heres a funny thing TH. I think I remember seeing your 'storm chasing WTF picture of the week' smile

Keep cool everyone!

winds have been going here all night and no letup this
morning should ease a bit and later then swing and pick
up behind the trough ,the change will be weak with
minimal rain if any at all, hopefully any potential storms
will be surpressed, it'll be bad if any fires start.

31.4C overnight low for Adelaide, and it looks like it won't fall victim to the 9am reset. Top stuff cheers

My overnight low was 28.2C, currently on 37.6C.

OCF has lows up to 34C in Oodnadatta during the coming week shocked ACCESS has 850 temps at 30C or even a little more over NE SA from mid-late next week onwards. Basically an epic plume of heat over NE SA/ SW QLD, NW NSW for days on end. Can't wait.

Well it was definitely a marrow boiling day to say the least unfortunately to consistent cloud cover the temp only managed to reach 39 but still a bloody hot day nonetheless and pretty muggy outside and hovering around 38.3 outside according to my wireless wx station with a relative humidity of 12 %

Now just awaiting on these storms to happen hopefully even if they are high base lighting storms i will still be happy

It did crack 40 here in Gulfview Heights. 40.6 C at 12:30 PM.

Not long after that wind swung around to W/SW and temp came down a little. Been around the 38C mark all afternoon.

Looks to be some interesting stuff happening this evening. What chance of a flash around the Adelaide area?

It's all just messy rain areas. Not lightning active at all.

Well once again a huge monumental big time fizzer last night after we were forecast to have scattered lightning and a little bit of rain overnight it was uncomfortable for the whole night until early this morning when the SW winds cooled temps down to more comfortable level

Hoping we don't have to wait too longer for another burst of marrow boiling heat again with the promise of some actual storm activity not a messy setup that doesn't deliver

The extreme heat and storms of the early-mid 90's when i was a kid and even in the early 000's after i finished high school would put our current summer weather to shame

We didn't really have any storms in the forecast so no fizzer here. There is no bigger fizzer/piss take/troll than a 55,000ft black-cored wall, fed by heat in the 30's and dewpoints into the 20's, suddenly collapsing into a s$@# heap the second it gets within arm's length. Just about renounced my faith.

ACCESS looks good for some heat later this week and especially towards the end of the run and has kept the same basic pattern for a while now. For me it should be warm to hot basically the whole way through, but for the LSE and southern Vic it looks much cooler with only a couple odd warm days in the 30's. GFS tries its darndest to import as much southerly fungus as humanely possible so I will ignore that crap and hope ACCESS is on the money. LSE / southern Vic looks plain cool (aside from the 12th) on GFS, far from anything resembling summer.

As far as i am concern Galaxyman that southerly fungus can return back to its rightful season which is winter as its summer now for those of us who love our hot weather and its ability to deliver ripper summer storms where conditions are perfect would love to see the ACCESS and GFS models bring more of a positive sign in terms of heat

For those interested, I have finally got my photos from this event online.... Will be remembered for the RFB's, the torrential rain, and the clear air bolts...
