Had a very nice christmas here, 28C and some cloud, just perfect for christmas lunch in the garden. Looked like some storms for a little while but nothing developed.

Thanks guys. Was good to get a chase in down this way again, I don't think there'll be that many of them! Definitely got lucky WR poke especially with the pulsey nature of cells!

Xmas day was lovely down here, had it on central coast. Barely a cloud in the sky and 27-28c, cant complain!

2016 was an interesting and quite nice year of weather for my area, although the lack of storms was disappointing.

Lots of records have been broken this year which is not too surprising for a young weather station, but I can't help noticing that only one out of the ten temperature records were for the coldest on record.

Would be interesting to see other posters stats for comparisons.

Interesting WR, thanks for posting.

I don't have any stats of my own but I'll be looking at stats posted here and the BOM stats when they come out later this week.

A couple of intersting points on those numbers. Although the annual total says the rainfall for 2016 was slightly below average:

1. Nearly 40% of last years' rain fell in one month, June. Most of that will have fallen in a few days in an ECL event early in the month. This type of pattern is common in deserts but unusual in a well watered places like the Illawarra. Sydney's pattern for 2016 will be similar.

2. 60% of the year's rainfall fell in January and June. The rest of the year was quite dry.

3. The four month period February to May was very dry, receiving only 78 mm, about 20% of the average for that period.

4. Mid- to late Winter (July-Sept) had average rainfall, while Spring - early Summer (Oct to Dec) was fairly dry, less than half.

5. It is in line with how I characterise the rainfall regime for our part of the world. It's not uniform like long term averages would suggest (with a wetter Autumn and drier Spring for Sydney, for example). it's not seasonal. It seems to be random.

The climate at my place is very unreliable/random. Though I generally get more rain in spring and less in autumn, at any time of the year there might be a dry spell of 6-10 weeks, or alternatively heavy rain. The only reliable thing is the lack of reliability.

High cloud coming from the WNW this morning but some low cloud sneaking over from the east.

28mm overnight of rain, very pleasing, most of that in a couple of hours between 5 and 7am - very nice sound to wake up to.
Should help the garden, after last weeks dry heat.

35.3mm in the 24hrs to 9am, certainly wasn't expecting that much rain to fall overnight, but I'll take it!!
Cool and overcast, humidity still high.

Most of Sydney received about a millimeter or less from persistent but very light rain during the late afternoon.

A Southerly change passed through Sydney Airport around 4:00AM and Newcastle about 7:30. It didn't drop the temperature but has probably stopped it from rising. It's now overcast, windy and humid, around 22 where it will probably hover all day, maybe spiking if we get sunny breaks.

The NW cloud band is about to clear the Sydney area, but the scud cloud in the Southerly stream will grace us with its presence for the rest of the day, in fact probably the next few days.

Yeah Steve it was a very dry year in general but with a big high rainfall period. Our climate has very much been driven by a negative SAM and negative IOD, which accounts for higher rainfall than usual in winter and early spring, while it also accounts for the dry during the last 3 months. The start of the year may have been influenced by the weak El Nino.

The dew points have dropped and voilą, it's stuck on cold mode now. Of course that is the way Steve, we can't seem to escape the cloud. Our last sunny day was nearly a week ago and we have seen little or no sunshine since last Friday. In fact we have seen no sun at all this year so far.

I'm surprised how warm temps have ended up today given the strong southerly and cloud cover. Above the long term January max at Obs Hill

Lovely cool day today. It's just nice to have the occasional day or three break from the heat and terrible humidity over the summer.
Reached a max of 24.6 today which was warmer than I thought it would be considering how cool it was this morning after that 4 am southerly came through. Becoming quite dark here now so wouldn't be surprised at a few drizzle patches developing this evening or overnight though the forecast suggests otherwise.
Looking forward to a few days of relief from the heat until the heat returns with a vengeance next weekend.
Let's hope there's not too many showers to ruin the Sydney test, although as Melbourne showed, the Paki's would probably fold anyway given half a chance.
I'm spending next week at beautiful Culburra so I'd be happy with some typical summer sunshine. Warmth, NE'ers and the chance of a storm in the evenings.

And Kizz, many apologies. I didn't pick up on the sarcasm and humour. My mistake. Honestly.

Warm, humid and windy on the North Shore. I spent the late morning in a shopping mall and noticed it had been raining when I went outside again around 12:30. However, the cloud unexpectedly broke up shortly afterwards to a partly cloudy afternoon with lengthy sunny periods. OH, like yesterday and the day before, was warm in the Southerly.

It's closed in again now. We might need an Ice Cream Vendor Alert for the first few days of the Test.

Enjoy Culburra Homer.

Thanks Steve. Not going till next week (Monday) but certainly will enjoy. Even if the weather is crappy, it's nice either way. Read a book inside (if it's like today), or spend days on the beach outside (if it's sunny and warm) are the options. Can't lose.

It's certainly very dark, dull and overcast here atm.
It's Richie Benaud temperature - 22.2 C.

I'm not a fan of cricket so I don't get the reference. Have fun at Culburra Homer, it's a really nice spot there. My friends and I went there on one of the days during early December while we were staying at Callala Bay. Crookhaven Heads (right near Culburra) is a cool spot and there's a couple of lookouts and an old lighthouse up there. Unfortunately we went on a crappy day so not much view, but I imagine the lookout that faces north would look right up to Gerroa and possibly beyond. Maybe you've already been there.

Cool and drizzly here today (below 20 atm), the heat has all been drawn out now. It took a few days to flush it out. Even after the hot weather went away, the dew points were still very high during New Years which was indicative the airmass still being warmish but not mixing down.

Cheers WR. No, I've never been to Crookhaven Heads. One of the few places in that part of the world that I've never seen. Thanks for the tip. I'm now looking forward to checking it out.
I certainly plan on making another trip again to Huskisson/Vincentia and also Hyams Beach. A childhood holiday spot and also so beautiful. I'd also like to head out to Point Perpendicular as it's been 30 years since I've been there.
It's such a wonderful part of the NSW coast.

Speaking of the drizzle that I said before the BOM didn't mention in their forecast......it is now here in full force.
Driveway pavers are really wet. On a day like today, it was a no brainer really that it would happen.
This is where we need people with local experience in the BOM.
Roads will be wet, slippery and dangerous now, yet there was no mention of any precipitation in this afternoon's forecast.
I really think this computer generated [censored] is insufficient, and think the old days of experienced human input were far more accurate, even though they sometimes got that wrong as well.
I see that they updated at 5.57 pm, after it started drizzling. lol.

I wasnt really expecting any precip today to be honest. From experience, days like today don't deliver.. there must've been a pocket of moisture coming in off the ocean as it was pretty clear about 3 hours ago on the beaches.

Evenings like tonight always provide a surprise. Not always, but it's no surprise really that there is drizzle hanging about.

Damn editing time.......

They didn't even have any precip in the forecast
Then, just 2 hours later, it's added.
Clearly, they have windows in their offices.

Back to the pattern of a beautiful sunny day and clouds on Mt Horrible. I expect someone somewhere will get a storm in the next few days, but not here. lately the Bathurst/Orange area has been surrounded by a doughnut of storms but misses out every time. Storms to the N,S,E and W but no storms here. So I would say that there will be storms nearby later this week, but not here.

It actually isn't too much of a problem, we had a good spring, and summer rain doesn't do much anyway, once the soil is dry rain evaporates away very quickly. But needless to say it is nice to get a storm occasionally.
