I remember that period well. It was horrible from 2000 til 2009. 9 years of heat, but we did get some very cold winters and some where i remember wearing a jumper twice. The big dust storm was where i said to myself, "it can only get better from here" which it did. I remember that period mentioned above of weeks of higher than 30C temps, mostly in the high 30's and one night broke a record where the min was 29C, and i think the RBH recorded 30 that night. I remember the hybrid low where they sound the cyclone warning siren on the ABC that day in Brisbane. I went to maloolaba that day and it was torrential.

GFS has been overcooking it for years. I feel they do not take into account longer term over riding issues. These days I briefly look then yawn.

GFS has an upper trough and showers for SEQ for most of the second week. Too far out to get excited, but if it comes off its going to be a pretty big turnabout for Sunshine Coast.

If I hadnt seen this with my own eyes I wouldn`t have believed it. Some time between 1:30 and 4pm yesterday while my son and I sat inside and watched a couple of movies, a dust devil/whirly whirly clearly visited our backyard. Unbelievably, we didnt hear a thing and found quite a shock when we went to bring in the washing. A cover that was on it was moved a couple of paddocks over LOL. Can't believe I didn't hear it.
Hopefully the link below works.

Haha nice Lani.

That's hot bello.

Go easy on GFS - is a bit of a doomsayer but also a useful longer term prediction of the more exciting end of what may happen. Been quite a few decent events that it's flagged weeks out.

Just to add to the posts from others about the 40C+ temps in NE NSW yesterday, they were impressive further south too (outside SE QLD/NE NSW)...including Sydney's Observatory Hill record high 9am temp of 36.5C

Looks like the general hot east/northeast Australia pattern will continue for the foreseeable future albeit with the slight cooldown around Sun/Mon.

As a sidenote, I hope the photos below that I took a few days ago in Wichita, Kansas after the icestorm helps cool some of you down smile

Not only was there ice, we also had distant lightning as the freezing rain was starting... then localised flash flooding later the next day from moderate to heavy rain...and some isolated tornadoes with severe thunderstorms further south in Texas:

Some great photos there as usual, thanks for sharing. Amazing to see tornadoes there right through the year, they are in such a sweet location for it. Jane and Clyve have just arrived back in the States, seasons are changing smile
Much cooler in Bellingen today, everyone still in shock after yesterday. It gets hot here but yesterday was unbelievable. Missed the storms but 2mm in the drizzle this morning.

I wonder if was like this before the 1893 floods? This heat will break sooner or later and that's when it will rain.

Lets see... January 1893 was slightly cooler then average. But Wetter than average. December 1892 the average temperature was 30.4C in Brisbane including 14 days were above 30 Degrees with 11 being consecutive days above 30. But, the month was wetter than normal.

You need ridging for Tropical lows/cyclones to cross the QLD coast and then after crossing you would need a upper level disturbance over western QLD to get the tropical disturbance to move south.
