HOWEVER, something strong is brewing for coming week. More than likely just lots of rain and wind, but who knows.

Certainly not me!

My Facebook reminder reminded me of the snow event in the Central West this time 12 months ago. The 1.9 max in Oberon (Sat 25th) was great. Hoping for a repeat in the next few weeks.

I notice how some reports of this dusting on BK make the point how rare snowfall is in w.a. It may be a rare experience for many people in w.a who cant easily be in the stirling range area at the right time, but for a non-alpine location snowfall is probably a lot more frequent than most realise.I would agree that heavier falls are rare.

Last year there were 5 falls I can attest to(and a 6th unconfirmed) - that is settling snowfalls. In 2015, three. One in 2013. Before that the cupboard was a bit bare in general terms it's true(though significant fall in spring 2012) but even during these bare times there were non settling falls.

Bluff Knoll is a bit of a slog and is not a pleasant stroll in very wet conditions unless someone gets it into their head to go up there is no way of knowing.

Bluff Knoll is about the same latitude as the Southern parts of the NSW Central Tablelands, the elevation of the peak at about 1,100 metres is similar to that of the higher parts of the Central Tablelands (e.g. Oberon) and it is fully exposed to any cold fronts that penetrate that far North, so on that basis one would expect several snow falls each year.

That is an interesting comparison to me because if asked, off the top of my head, I wouldn't have known where BK was in relation to eastern states locations.

Speaking of cold fronts that penetrate - we seem to set for one of those tomorrow...

Media got a hold of it calling it a freak rare occurance... God I'm so sick of this [censored]. BK is always the first and usually the only to receive snow from a cold front due to decay that doesn't reach us.

BK receives several settled falls and who knows however many snowfalls that don't settle.

Freak and rare? Pfft.

So probably as dumb as granite, shale or quartzite poke Don't know which one of those would be the dumbest? Maybe shale?

In another rare and freak occurance, 9cm is forecast for BK tomorrow and further snow showers are forecast later in the week.

"Freak", along with "mini tornado", should be banned from the weather-reporting lexicon.

Geology was something I would have done if I was a little better at science. I went on to major in German studies at uni. The degree turned out to be as useless as booobs on a bull in the end. I was obsessed about Volcanic stuff around the age of ten or 11. Used to mock up a volcano with chicken wire and mud. With a mixture of bi carb and vinegar and red dye for magma. Geology would be one thing that would give you perspective concerning the earth processes. And perspective is sadly lacking in the era of the instant everything unfortunately. I am guilty of a lack of it at times too I must confess

I learnt about geology in one of my subjects last semester and found it fascinating. Before that rocks were just rocks lol.

Good idea with the volcano, that's genius!! grin

Snowy in Perisher today which is nice, about 10mm of precip since 9am, most of which would've been snow. I think 1.0 with 0.4 DP as per now is definitely cold enough for snow. So perhaps up to 10cm of snow so far, probably more like 7cm or something though as it's a little above zero.

Judging on those figures mate, I would have hoped so too, but reading through the ski.com forums, I think it's been a miserable day down there.
Don't think Perisher had 7 cm's. Cooma had a max of 12.7. Pretty warm for this time of year.
Certainly hope that changes soon.
My optimism last evening was optimistic at best.
Tomorrow should be better one would think.

Haven't been reading the ski threads today so cheers for letting me know that. Hopefully the situation there improves.
