Some big falls in the resorts forecast for the coming week. Could be close to a meter of fresh snow based on current forecasts.

Kangaroo,

-6c cold pool at around Shooters/Black Springs at 850hpa, -34c at 500hpa.

Certainly an extremely good setup, with a rate of 10mm/3hour. Definitely worth a trip if it holds steady.

Wish I could get up there but it just won't be doable unfortunately.

Which way would you go to get to Oberon from Wollongong, if you were to go?

Simplest may be via Katoomba from the Gong I suspect. Turnoff to Oberon at Hartley.

Otherwise (longer) down to Goulburn and up through Taralga, could be easier traffic wise though.

The "short cut" via Wombeyan from Mittagong is a road few people like and is quite slow. However I've not been on it for several years, but I don't think it's any better in that time smile

I drove Wombeyan Caves Road 5 or 6 years ago, and it was one of the worst roads I've ever driven on. Pothole central. Took well over an hour to get from the caves back to Mittagong.

Hey Dave and Rsav.

I probably wouldn't go to Oberon because it is very far from here, about 3h 20min and that would be via the BM's indeed.

But the shortest way to Shooters and points further south is actually Goulburn and then up through Taralga and that's 3h 6min but about 40 min longer via BM's. So if I was to head up, then maybe I would just stop at Porters Retreat. There's a lot of terrain above 1200m around there too. I think that area is under rated simply because most people get to Shooters before Porters.

Porters and Black Springs certainly the hot spots out there if you want settling.

I've never considered Black Springs but its westerly exposure would be useful and being around 1200m is good enough.

Indeed guys, PORTERS does well because it's so high for cloud coming from the SW and it gets good orographic effect after crossing the huge Abercrombie River valley and the Crookwell plateau of about 900 or so metres smile

I'm doing it. Although currently in Adelaide, I'll fly home tomorrow night and head out to the central west Monday morning. The following week I'm off to Perisher.

A snow thread and not many pics of white stuff - grin

View from kitchen table, not heavy snow but best cover seen this year. Trapyard Hill is the higher hill to the right, Mt Wellington, (Vic) is about 4km away to its left on this ridgeline.

Nothing except the occasional ice pellets out at Shooters Hill. Having lunch in town might dart out there again in an hour.

A quote at the end of the article suggests some of the best skiing in a decade to be had right now.
