Im quietly excited for tomorrow, with the season the way its been its hard to be too boisterous. On 1st inspection instability appeared marginal/ok, but replotting soundings to 38-39c gives -3/-4 lis and 1000cape. With very high humidity and strong almost too high moisture profile and good forcing with a well timed change i can dare to dream of a beautiful buster roll with heavy rain encroaching from sw around 3pm preceeded by explosive updraughts on mtns giving nice entree tstorms b4 main course. Hope the dud season hasnt got me too dreamy, what are your thoughts

Personally I couldn't care less if Sydney gets a storm or not - Sydney isn't the centre of the universe. I haven't had any decent storms here, just a bit of thunder and a lot of near misses, one good storm in the middle of the night which knocked out my phone line. It would be great if we got a good old fashioned storm rolling across, but I fear it will be the usual spotty instability, you have to be under it to be lucky.

That's the way it is for all of us Greg.
We all live in hope when a positive forecast comes out.
If it doesn't happen, so be it. Hence a lot of the disappointment over this Summer.

As for Quagy's post, I like your enthusiasm.
SA is going off at the moment so I hope that instability crosses the state tomorrow and ends up giving us some joy.

Greg- you've had one good storm more than some that post here.

Yep lovin your enthusiasm Quagmelson but I'm not really feeling it tbh. It's hard to be positive with such a bad start to the season. Even after your replot, -3/-4 LI's and 1000 CAPE are nothing to write home about but our standards have to be lower for this poor excuse of a storm season. So bring on tomorrow for whatever it may deliver!!

Here here, last storm season was dry, nothing at all, this storm season... I've seen plenty of distant storms but am yet to be hit by one. Weird considering my place is usually a magnet for storms.

Enhanced IR sat is looking insane over SA and central Australia - don't think I've seen such high topped clouds in a long time. Looked like we were going to get something hear this afternoon, but they're just not moving.

Tomorrow's looking very good if the forecast comes through. Lets see if we can get a bit more to top up the 40mm we got the other day wink

"Layers" (enhanced infrared) is still looking impressive over SA, with a massive area of red in the NE of the stato 32.0te, including a white patch (about -90 degrees) North of Lake Eyre. Using a lapse rate of 6 degrees per 1,000 metres, that would be a height of about 18,000 to 20,000 metres.

It's already over 30 at some stations around Sydney. Some coastal stations are above yesterday's maximum, including OH (29.6 so far), the Airport (31.1) and especially Bellambi (which has been as high as 32.0).

EDIT: no sign of any change on the South Coast as yet. Bega is on 32 degrees.

Have woken up just now feeling very hot. I left the window open and it is up to 34C already at 8am. We should get our first 40C degree day but I think it will only just nudge over it, maybe 41C at the very highest.

Now 36.0C with gusts close to 80km/h at 8:30am and even dew points are hanging in there at 19C so low level moisture shouldn't be a problem with this NWer. Also, those light showers on the tablelands are moving quite swiftly and is very convincing for this time of morning that there is even any kind of precip. The southerly this afternoon should bring in some nice moisture as it will be a humid one so that could actually help storms for a little while. Green Cape is getting the southerly and a dew point of 21C, and the DP on the boundary of the southerly is likely to get higher.

Bit of a shower coming through here now - been a damned hot night for here, min around 24, which may well be a record unless 9am reset nobbles it.

Looks you do actually have a record Dave as it was 23.9C at 9am yesterday which smashes the January record of 22.1C and also beats the record for any month which is 23.0C. These stats are for the Ap btw.

This morning it was clear over Mt Horrible but cloudy everywhere else, a bit of a reversal. had a brief shower (of rain) but it was moving fast. Last night was hot but not as hot as last week, the temperature isn't rising very quickly so that's a relief.

The rain further west on the radar seems to peter out as it moves east.

The Southerly passed through Bega just before 10:00 but hadn't reached Montague Island by 10:30.

Hot, humid and partly cloudy here with sunny periods. It does look like cloud will increase as the day goes by.

It's an interesting sort of day though, at least different to most days smile

If we could jag a storm later that would be good smile

It's completely cloudy here Steve but hopefully the temp and DP combo alone (33/21) should spark storms without the sun. Also very windy atm and of course incredibly humid.

Haha! So am I.
Nothing on the lightning tracker to the west either.
Whatever we get, will have to develop from now on.
I'm trying to stay patient, but geez, it's a bit frustrating.
I can see some towers going up on the CWF webcam in clearer skies.
Maybe that's our hope?

Perhaps so but it's nothing impressive at this stage by the looks of it.
I'm also quite surprised that nothing has developed on the boundary of the southerly. There is also a bit of blue sky to the west so hopefully stuff is developing out there. One thing is for sure, it's bloody hot and uncomfortable, temp in the mid 30's and DP's in the low 20's.
That kind of thing just does not happen here but it has happened several times this summer, mainly in a NEer though.

Storm line moving quickly and developing rapidly. Currently about Cowra to Forbes and a little beyond.

They are the tall towers you would have seen on the Cam Homey. Couple of sparks have appeared in that line.

Hopefully it also starts spreading southwards as well, there are few light showers spreading from Cowra to about Crookwell so it would be awesome if that turned into a nice squall line.

Sydney is on track for its hottest January ever. The January 2017 average minimum (21.5C) is way above the previous record of 21.0C in 1991. In terms of maxima, the Jan 2017 mean is currently 29.2C, just behind the 1896 record of 29.5C. In terms of January mean temperature, it is so far the warmest ever (25.4C versus 25.1C in 1991). More heat next week makes the odds of a maximum record pretty good.

Also interesting is that Penrith has had more 40C&+ days than ever previously observed for a Dec-Jan period, with 7 so far and likely more next week. The heat approaching late this week and early next week looks deadly.

It most certainly will be the hottest January on record for the majority of eastern NSW I'd think.

In some years the heat seems to die off around mid-January and is replaced by easterly maritime weather to take us through February. Other years January is a near constant maritime influence with only brief incursions of sun and heat. But this year, it is near constant heat through the month and little maritime influence which is why it would surely have to be the hottest Jan on record.
In saying that we haven't had 40C yet this season while January 2013 got two 40+ degree days, but also the aforementioned mid-January cool down where this year it's regular well above average days but not record breaking ones

There's a bit of cell coming my way and for once I know that it will probably not fizzle out, but possibly get stronger as it hits higher temps and dew points. However, we may or may not get a direct hit.

Our preliminary analysis is indicating highest minimum and mean January temperature on record for large slices of eastern and northern NSW, but highest maximum only for a small pocket near the Queensland border - 1939 is a tough bar to clear in most inland areas.

Lucky bugger; looks like we will get well and truly skunked in the Basin unless something develops rapidly. You need it, though- by all accounts, it's been even drier in the Illawarra than here which is unusual.

It's practically all over now and we only got moderate rain. Enough to wet the road and that's about it. I'd be reluctant to put it on my storm tally but I suppose it only just qualifies. There's now a layer of low cloud coating the top of the escarpment.

How good is this, strong W'lys and DP's in the 20s, dont see it often grin

Next weeks mega heat event looking good. This season just seems to keep on giving and giving. HOpefully it means a warm/hot winter, but don't think so as there's usually a balance there. Perhaps a dip in temps in autumn then a heat up in winter would be one possibility.

Should i take the storm part off the thread title?!, youre right humphrey, skunked again, too much cloud and light rain not clearing up enough in time, north of orange will be pretty good, at least the southerly is coming, id be happy to get the one lightning and rumble you got wavey smile. And Greg, i wasnt trying to be sydneycentric with my post, sorry if you took it that way, im going to go and sulk in my storm viewing chair now, maybe put on some u.s chase videos later

I prefer my westerlies to be dry since we get enough hot and humid days. I would've taken 40C with 5C DP any day over 36C with 22C DP. I even think that 45C with negative dew points would've been more bearable than today.

For once I'm actually glad that the southerly has come through. It's cool with some peaceful light rain falling. smile

Yeah quagy, I'm not really complaining since something is better than no storm at all. Would be nice to get a great storm but we have to take what we can get in these dry and stormless times.

The only thing these elevated DPs are good for is to quell the fire danger a little bit; a traditional dry westerly would have seen FDI's into the Severe range today on the coast.

Looking forward to that southerly; it should be here within the hour. After a decidedly mild 26th of January, the furnace is well and truly on again as Boris mentioned above. I've created a separate thread for that as it looks to be one of the more significant heatwaves in recent history if models call it correctly.

There are some dark clouds to my NW and a few rumbles, but it looks like it will miss me to the north.

Yep Greg - I think the long line back to NW NSW is going to stay ever so slightly north of us.

A small secondary line to our SW (about 150km away) MIGHT drop something later but I'm not confident.

The Southerly arrived here about 4:45PM. The sky is now filling up with marine layer cloud, covering up the mid level stuff. I've opened the doors and windows to let it cool down the unit.

There are / have been a few isolated storms about, including the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle areas as well as parts of the Southern Highlands and Illawarra. Some also look to be developing on the mid North coast, and there is quite a chain of active storms beyond radar coverage extending NW from Dubbo.

However, for Sydney and nearby areas, to paraphrase the "Soup Nazi" character in that episode of seinfeld, "No storms for you!".

Raining quite nicely here, moderate rain, tiny drops. Seems more like what we'd get from a onshore shore. Absolutely wonderful. grin

Just touched on 40 today here, which isn't bad considering it was mostly cloudy. Big storm brewed up right over us earlier in the day and then started dropping rain about 2ks south. Literally had 3 drops. Now we have another cell flaring up a couple of k's north...... cant win one here.
Southerly dropped temps but still 31. Winds picking up but not too strong. Does look unstable to the west. really should see a decent drop tonight....but not banking on it.

I'm in Bourke this evening and a storm has just hit. Very gusty winds (they've been gusty for a little while) and pouring rain has just started. Storms have been brewing all afternoon across the region, I'm guessing they're extending all the way south east somewhat toward central tablelands (fingers crossed they get there for the people down there). Was interesting watching all the cumulus developing all across the sky this afternoon.

That said it was very hot with very high dew points out here. I was doing home visits in Brewarrina, my gosh it was hot. Temps over 40 and dew points approaching 20 across the region. The storm has knocked the temp down though smile. Back up to 40 tomorrow.

Fingers crossed all the areas around Sydney, the Hunter and Illawarra gets some good rain and storms soon smile

Now that the rain is passing to our East, we're starting to get some decent thunder coming out the back of it.

Looks like Sydney (OH) picked up a quick 13mm since 6:00PM, with Olympic Park picking up about 12. Seems to have been a bit of lightning about the Western suburbs.

Just light, windblown rain here that's now just got heavier.

Rumbling in the distance. Looking at the radar it seems like Gosford will get some thundery showers. I'm happy that we'll get more than the pathetic 0.4mm so far today.

Now quite heavy with gutters overflowing! Not many flangs so far but this rain well needed!

Regrettably, it's still 25+ here with no showers.
I'm one of those who prefers every day to be below 25 max in summer.

Just had a little shower here but as soon as it landed on the pavers, it was dry again.
Wouldn't have even been enough to register.

Windy and drizzly here.
I suspect it's the same for most of the metro.
Current temp is 21.2.

Couple of spits here last night but that was all. It was still 25 degrees at 11pm.

Pleasant this morning, cloudy and mild.

The lessening of heat I was hoping for around early Feb seems to have dissipated from the models after being there so long. Bit of a shame smile

Can't believe parts of Tasmania are in the minuses this week...

Although it's mild it's still very humid here today, hopefully with this cloud that will drive some storm production
