I do not think we have had a "wet" season yet this summer.

Not sure what the person at BOM who draws the rainfall maps is on.

It shows that coastal and slightly inland CQ had average rainfall for January.

Yet the weather station statistics I see show it was below average.

Hi, my first ever post.

It is certainly not a 'wet' season.
The 3 Month rainfall anomalies (Nov-Jan) clearly indicates the big dry for the majority of eastern Qld.

I know this is not a wet season.
We haven't even had one storm. Managed to have them all pass around us. Most we have had is a very edge of one.

Dams are more empty than full for the second year running. The little rain we have had that greened the grass is now long gone. Grass is more brown than green. My citrus that have been in for 20 years are dying.

It has got to the stage that nothing but minor flooding rain is going to fix things.

Daughter who has her horses and hour and half south from home has had to up their feed to stop them losing weight. They have had a few good rains down there but now the benefit of it is lost with no follow up.

Hi Dusty Rusty, welcome to the forums.

So damn humid on the coast. The breeze just dropped today and it made it feel so much worse frown

This might get downgraded to nothing but 14th of Feb going for 181mm for Yeppoon 107mm for Rocky...101mm for Gladstone...

http://ozforecast.com.au/cgi-bin/weather.cgi?location=Yeppoon.QLD&forecast=gfsext

http://ozforecast.com.au/cgi-bin/weather.cgi?location=Gladstone.QLD&forecast=gfsext

This year and last feel like they've been warmer summers.

Previous ones I'm sure the temps were high but not so bad, maybe more rain and cloud...

Wow, the most rain predicted for here in the next 16 days is all of 8ml.

My poor garden.

Welcome Dusty Rusty.

Take forecasts that far out with a grain of salt as they often change with further runs. Fast running out of time for rainfall this wet season and longer range modelling is also looking quite grim for the cooler months and possibly as far as next wet season.

My grass greened up in 2 days when I put the sprinkler on it. Have it on every day now, beach sand so doesn't hold water well.

We put a sand spear down 5 years ago so free water.

The next run it was only getting to Mackay before moving off shore, latest run it doesn't even happen.

It's extended gfs so take it with a grain of salt, but there's a trend starting so who knows...

Thank you. I hope that it comes off. Nothing but enough for a small to large flood is going to fill the dams and creeks here.

Welcome to the forum Dusty Rusty! Something has to give sooner or later, this is like the weather we get in the pre "wet" season months except at least we have the occasional storm to get excited about. Yes GFS is throwing its familiar "end of run" low/tc for us to get excited about. But we all know how quickly that can change. The MJO should be more favourable at that time which is a good thing.

Only the 2nd time in the last 5 years, our 22,000 litre rainwater tank has gone empty.

Last wettish month was September.

I am not getting too excited about it. It seems to pass over us to the north and disappear inland and south even quicker.

Looks like those up north will have lots of rain if it does happen.

Access too is interested in quite a large system developing out near Vanuatu and crossing CQ coast around Valentine's Day. With warm soupy waters I'd be careful what you wish for. Even EC is slowly showing signs of a low in the central coral sea

We are having nights of 27 deg or 26 every night, the average here is 23.6 normally.

Also 30 or 31 and the average is 29.2

We average 8 days of 30deg in Jan and Feb (8 in Jan and 8 in Feb)... we are going to be well ahead of it this month

18 days of 30 or higher in January !

Dew point seems down on previous summers but humidity seems about the same. I guess in previous years we had cloud and rain so that somewhat made in bearable even if it was humid as well.

I am going to predict 10-20mm for Yeppoon in February.

---

Elders weather site says

Current climate forecasts favour drier than average conditions for eastern Australia during mid-summer, returning closer to average later in February and early autumn. During this period, a stronger than average high pressure ridge is likely to reduce the effects of the south easterly trade winds responsible of bringing moisture onto the eastern seaboard.

Their 12 month forecast has us on near normal rain in March and above average in April. It also is going for a wetter than normal winter ....

Looks like we have rain coming here. I saw jetstreams today. Normally within a week or so of starting to see them I get rain.

Hope it falls on my place and not everywhere but.

According to GFS 20mm in 2 days time here...

Weatherzone says : Tonight 28C ....

Surely that is an error.

Probably rain at Mackay Bundybear. They have probably had a 1000mm so far this year.

I am becoming very disheartened. Looking at one of the dams today it is quickly filling with junk weed because it is so low and the temp in it is too warm. When, if, we get rain to fill it all that crap will die but will likely cause the oxygen levels to drop with it decomposing killing all the life in the dam. The only bit of green on the block is very limited to where waste water is. Even the weeds in the paddock are dying.

It has become an extremely dry argument around here. Except for when my new solar hot water system dumps all the water in it's tank at such a rate that it overflows the gutters. Apparently the new ones work far far better than the old one we had to replace. They get too hot so need to dump the water. Thank goodness none of my dogs have been laying under the spot it gushes over when it does it. We just have to cover half of it with shade cloth.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could just click and drag the country over to the right a little bit. We could have some lovely rain.

I see a little yellow blob out there, sort of looks like it is heading this way. It will probably get to the coast and follow it up to Mackay.

I got wet this morning. Probably not enough to do anything at all apart from make it a bit steamier. I did hear a bit of a trickle going into the tanks so that is better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick.

Hope we get properly wet though.

That would be very nice. Maybe I should do a load or 3 of washing, wash the car, water my pot plants? That usually encourages it.

I can not win. I got all excited about a big dark cloud and bit of wind coming. Ran out and got the washing off the line.

Yep. I got 3 spots but could see the property over the road disappear because of the rain that way. All of 500 metres.

Not fair. I suppose I should be grateful it is getting closer.

Still next to nothing. For all my luck I got 2ml today. Darling son came home to tell me he had a solid downpour at work today. Just down the road and round the corner.

Somehow the cloud that looks like it might bear actual rain has managed to move from the south to the north. Just. Yep, looking at the radar it is probably just missing my back fence.

I wish hubby would bring a dozer home and get rid of the bloody mountain over the road that seems to deflect the rain from us.

Ours has 1 panel and only loses a tiny amount. Drips into the ground (ground system, panel on roof). Doesn't heat if tanks is fully hot.

This one is a 2 panel system. Only a few months old. I rang them about it when it did this the second time. Apparantly the new systems are just more efficient at heating than the old ones. Our old one did a very occasional overflow excepting the last time when it was just running straight out. It was nearly 20 years old when it died. It wass cheaper to replace it than repair it.

Just reminded me time to change the annode this year...only reason our system is stil going...

March 2017? Probably more rain than Feb but nothing substantial... I reckon April something big will happen.

Next Tues/Wed looks good for rain. Did Rocky get much out of those showers we had yesterday or was it confined to the coast?

Still bloody dry.

Good side of it is the prawns are pretty thick in the creek. Son came home from a nights camping with enough prawns to keep me going for quite a while. I only got about a 1/3 of his share of the haul. The other 2/3 went as payback to the property owner they launched the boat from and another person for a favour.

I am thinking with this dry it might pay me to toss a couple of pots in the creek. Some mud crab to go with my prawns and fish wouldn't be bad. grin

Saved by the NE wind again.

Unless it swings N in the afternoon, not likely to hit 32.

Maybe tomorrow will be different strong NW winds?

There was quite a bit of lightning around last night.

I am not sure if it will get to 41C though. If it got to that temperature with this cloud hanging around, it would feel like 78C.

Bit overcast here today. Still hot but we are not as hot this week as we have been previously.

My place is so brown. I hope my fruit trees survive. If we get rain soon they will hopefully come good. I just don't have enough water in the dam to water things unfortunately. I don't think I have seen our dams so low and need to keep what I do have in case of a bushfire.

Error Vinnie. Odd to say, but slightly disappointed it doesn't look like we will reach 41c as forecasted. It's always interesting to see just how high it might e gotten to. Emerald has hit 43.6c! A little warm hehe

I must admit, I thought last summer which was also very hot and dry was tiresome.

But the constant 34+ days is getting tiresome this year.

I think if we get a day under 30C I will be wearing a jumper.

This feels like the warmest summer in over 5 years I have been here.

I guess we were due for it after the winter that was not as cold .

So Yeppoon will get something or just cloud and nothing as it dies off coming out to the coast?

Fingers crossed if we do get something it drops the temperature down back to what it was like 2 days ago...

Very isolated storms again. I have heard reports of reasonable 25mm+ falls if you were lucky to get under one of them. But for the most part most missed out.

Looking like February will be another below average month. it will not be long now and the drought word will be spoken of.

Not sure what is driving this multi year dry event of no widespread rain events and all isolated storms. Or when this dry period will end, with forecasts already saying this year will probably be another El Nino year.

This map really shows it, and remove Cyclone Marcia and the extreme winter rain event from last year for coastal CQ region, and all this area would be red as well.

That chart just explains my pure frustration for the weather of late. The Fraser Coast and most of the Burnett is as dry as a bone and some say it's the worst they've ever seen it. There are people outside of this region playing it down saying it's not that bad, yeah ok, go look at the charts, go ask the farmers who are suffering in those areas then come back and tell me it's not true.

That map would explain why everything here is brown. Why my dams are the lowest I have ever seen them.

We could see storms today. We could hear them. And again we are bone dry.

It is a very very unfunny joke.

Comparing midday today with midday yesterday....

Rocky 32 deg feels like 31 , humidity 42 percent dew point 18 deg.

Rocky 34 deg feels like 36 , humidity 53 percent dew point 24

So it feels 5 deg cooler, 11 percent less humid .

Yeppoon 29.5 deg feels like 29 , humidity 61 percent dew point 21

Yeppoon 31 deg, feels like 33, humidity 73 percent dew point 26

So it feels 4 deg cooler is 11 percent less humid.

Funny how we can barely manage 6mm of rain, same system moving up the coast delivers 100mm+ falls in and around Mackay. Ugh. Bundybear, this is the least funniest joke everrrr. staaap

This is the warmest Feb in Yeppoon since 2006. Supposed to average 8 days of 30 -34 in Feb and the same in Jan. We have had 18 days above in Jan and 15 so far in Feb...

2006 was an El Nino year I think too...

I predict Coldfront should get a massive storm this afternoon.

Why?

Because I have organised a picnic dinner at the beach there with my daughter.

Of course my property will miss any hint of rain at the same time.

Wonder if this is the end of the extreme heat and extreme humidity now. I mean not like everyday we have had this but some have, today was very pleasant on the coast.

Last year about the same time we had a week here of 37 deg and it never got that hot after.

I wonder if Rocky will see any more 38's or higher heading into late Feb and March. Looking at the forecast for Yeppoon I only see 30 deg days nothing extreme.

If Yeppoon doesn't see 13.2 mm before the month is out, it will be the driest February on record (Records don't go back that far though to the mid 1990's).

Will beat 2005's 19.8mm

Also, Rocky's max temp is 4 deg above this month.

It rained here last night. I think. Or it could have been a flock of bats.

Only reason I know is I was out checking the chooks and felt drops fall on me.

Even I who am not fond of the bang and crash of storms would more than welcome one dumping poop loads of rain. The rain would make up for the inconvenience of stupid dogs.

Gladstone was throwing false echos a fair bit the past week so maybe they are fixing it. I doubt it is down due to the planned doppler upgrade. Not in February anyway.

Driving into the park we were met with very large pools of water collected on the side of the road. Debris washed 1/4 of the way across it. Went for about 1k.

It is still so bloody dry here. The grass is dead. It only got one mowing since about last year. Son is happy as it is his job to mow it. Jeez, did I get dudded on the reduced board for labour.

The forecast is such a tease. I think some will have given up on it raining this summer now. It is like the dry started several years ago and is yet to let go.

Need 10.6mm to fall otherwise it will be the driest February on record for Yeppoon.

Note records go back to 1994 so I doubt it really is the driest...

Even with the sprinkler system connected to the sand spear, there are still dry spots on the lawn. I'm glad we have this though.

Someone pinch me. I must be dreaming. I am sure that I hear rain on the roof and can smell it.

Nothing to get too excited by the looks. If I am lucky I will get enough to keep some plants going before fully carking it. Put an inch into the tanks if I am really lucky.

I noticed that as it headed our way the yellow died out. Of course it reappears after missing our place. But I am happy to have an sprinkle I can get.

Went to Gladdy today. Got rained on on the way home into Miriamvale, in Miriamvale and out.

Not a drop at home.

30mm here this afternoon. Cracking storm. Torrential rain while it lasted, lots of thunder. But it was the typical narrow storm.

Given up on thinking it will rain even when surrounded by storm cells like today. It seems we can't pull a trick this season. Nothing even in the long range forecasts to get our hopes up. I'm guessing one or two bursts from the monsoon before it retreats north again to give us a chance at something. Haha we will probably end up getting more rain over winter this year.

I'm not sure what it is like in Rocky but it felt cooler this morning and today on the Cap Coast.

Driet Feb on record/ 3rd driest on record for here.
