Currently hearing plenty of rumbles from that storm coming in from Richmond.

Actually, it has intensified a little and there are plenty of flashes now, although due to the lower marine layer cloud, nothing spectacular is visible.
Another flash just now, and the thunder is getting louder.
An unexpected surprise this evening.

Edit 1. Wow, almost a direct hit then, and Foxtel satellite is now out.

Edit 2. Now the rain is torrential.

Just took out the garbage and was greeted by the sight of a CG to the NW followed by a loud peal of thunder about 15 seconds later (so about 3 miles). That was a bonus with all the scud about. It must have lifted a bit. There's now sheet lightning as a fairly active, noisy storm passing to my North. Just light rain here.

similar here homey, been up at local lookout with mate (paterson reserve) since 7pm watching (use term loosely due to mentioned low cloud) quick moving cells. last one dropped a bolt with instantaneous crack knocked some street lights out and set off 2 car alarms! we were watching from under gazebo near lookout at the time. just ducked home for a few more refreshments - heading back up with thunder continuing, 4am start but so what! 2.5mm in gauge

That's dedication Quagy!!
I reckon we've had 10 - 15 mm's out of that lot. There was 25 minutes of fairly torrential rain. As I said, we had a few close strikes too.
Good luck. There could still be another surprise or two to come.
If I sounded excited before, it's because I was!!! It's been a long time coming.
I said before it was a certainty once I watered the garden!!

Looks like round 2 is coming in for me, although maybe not quite as severe.

It's going pretty spastic out to sea with the lightning strikes:

http://en.blitzortung.org/live_lightning_maps.php?map=22

Just had a big set of rumbling booms here on the Northern Beaches... still only 1/10th the lightning density over Sydney compared to out at sea! poke

Good to see a few of us are getting storms plus some rain where needed. There have been useful falls of 10-20 mm in a line from Kurrajong to Dee Why, with lower falls to the North and South of this band. I'm now getting what might be described as 'thundery light rain'.

P.S. the BOM updated the forecast at 7:53PM to include the possibility of thunderstorms. From memory, just 'light rain' had been indicated before.

EDIT: an active storm over Manly - Dee Why area seems to have formed in the last little while. That would be the thunder I can hear.

Interesting the BoM didn't come on board with this until late this evening.

My report for Tuesday January 31st 2017...

Another "lay day" in Mascot, due to very hot weather in Sydney (min of 25.4C, max of 39.4C in the City; min of 23.5C, max of 39.6C at the Airport, with 1.4mm of rain collected). Quite windy and mostly cloudy too, but no real relief until the cool change swept in around 1pm. poke

The rest of the afternoon and evening were much more pleasant, with the only other weather feature being low cloud with drizzle.

Glad a few of you guys got some good storms. Been a dry run!

We had a light shower out here last night, around 1mm but it was nice enough for me to go and stand out in it smile

Better showers went north of me - maybe Greg out Limekilns Rd did better than here.

Still no real sign of respite in the models.

Just going to have to wait and see until mother nature decides to cool it a bit smile

26 days of Feb left after today (not that I'm counting) grin

My report for yesterday (Wednesday February 1st) from here in Mascot... smile

Minimum and maximum temperatures for yesterday (plus rainfall in the 24 hours to 9am):

Sydney - 20.3C / 24.0C / 1.2mm
Sydney International Airport (Kingsford-Smith) - 19.9C / 22.0C / 1.6mm

Virtually no sun yesterday, which was both bad and good! Following the oppressive heat and humidity in recent days, it was a welcome respite. smile

The only dampener was the rain, but it was mostly light showers or drizzle up until lunchtime. The winds were generally very light btw.

I caught a brief glimpse of blue sky around 7pm but that was it for the day.

As mentioned in everyone else's posts, further showers and even some surprise thunderstorms moved into Sydney during the evening. I caught a few distant flashes of lightning and heard some thunder, but otherwise only copped a few light showers here in Mascot; the heaviest rain missed us.

Skies started clearing up around midnight. smile

Otherwise, apart from the light rain and lack of sunshine, it was perfect for visiting Darling Harbour and seeing the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge! smile

Naah, I think the radar was exaggerating those showers a bit. Only 1mm here.
I bet the A/C salespeople in Orange will be doing well out of this heat, The people in Orange aren't really used to the heat and wilt very easily.

A Southerly change passed through coastal parts of Sydney around 8:00AM and it's now blowing at 15 to 20 knots. We've had some sunny breaks this morning after another warm night, but I think the marine layer will probably be back soon. The hot air has been thouroughly flushed from the Sydney Basin and I'd say coastal areas from the lower Hunter South.

Greg - radar DEFINITELY was not a good guide. Often the case here.

I notice we've not been discussing frost much lately grin

I forgot to mention that yesterday the clouds were so low they were just touching the tops of the tallest skyscrapers in the City, including the iconic Sydney Tower. poke

Dipped to 20.8C in Sydney (19.9C at the airport) last night, currently a breezy, partly cloudy 24C. smile

4.4mm of rain collected at Observation Hill in the 24 hours to 9am btw. smile

Cheers ASF - it looks good when the clouds are like that smile

It's actually a really nice 24 degrees or so here at the moment. Radar shows showers but that's a laugh - must be virga smile

Supposed to get to 31 and if the cloud clears it will I'm sure.

Now pinning my hopes on the second half of Feb being cooler out and losing the excessive heat. Just getting back to average temps or nearby would be pleasant smile

Needless to say very hot out here, step outside and it's that in-your-face heat where you sort of feel your eyes dry out. And I just drove home for lunch, getting in the car and the steering wheel is too hot to touch! The past few days have been the same, that's when you know it's hot!

Not sure what the official BOM temps are reading, but my thermometer I took outside just then was up around 44-45, was similar yesterday smile
