With BoM and maps forecasting a solid jump in temperature, it'll now feel like summer and plants will get the shock of their lives.

Thursday to be watched - Adelaide has 850 temps at a HUGE 27-28 degrees with some isolated 29 degree pockets so indicating 43-44 degrees.

While GFS does have a surface trough on the west coast Thursday I do not think it will do much due to a lack of moisture but something to potentially watch but not holding my breath on it

This stage I'll go this for Adelaide:

39 Wednesday 8th Feb
43 Thursday 9th
42 Friday
38 Saturday before the change moves in mid afternoon Saturday

Thursday is looking incredible. ACCESS is off the wall, has the 5840 line right down to Melbourne and has the next line up over SA and NW Vic. It has pockets of 32C 850hpa temps extending down to the Riverland. Cannot wait for this afternoon's BOM update. Cannot wait until Thursday grin

BOM has added the magic word "Humid" to the forecast during this upcoming epic week.

It's started, my PWS is reading 28.2/21.3C atm. And to think 24 hours ago it was a cold overcast stratus laden Melbourne hangover when the change moved through!!!

Parawa is hilariously cold again compared to Adelaide, only a mere 16C while Adelaide is 10C warmer.

Certainly an impressive burst of heat, especially just N of Adelaide's latitude. Prob see 41 to 41.5C tomorrow, then I think thurs is a real shot at 42-43C. Places like Renmark, Port Augusta, Mildura, Kyancutta, Tarcoola, Whyalla probably are the places to watch for a 47C, and of course good potential for consecutive 45C+ for places like Moomba, Marree etc. A real bake!

TS cool

understandable why you're happy, at last you get a

approaching.
btw which model were you using for 32 850s?
none on WZ or BSCH showed 32
if i had seen 32 on any models i would have spat my
coffee all over the screen.

BOMs highest forecast for renmark is 45 which doesn't
come within a bulls roar of 50. even if the forecast
was 47 (which it may do) or even 48 it still doesn't
come within a country k of 50, most people don't realise
just how hard circumstances and parameters have to push
to get there. i reckon renmark would have to crack at
least 33 850s before it even got a sniff at 50 on the
ground.
if the unlikely event occurred that somewhere does get
record 50 bom will put it under the microscope and
scrutinize it very carefully before making it official.
who knows, one day in the future maybe, but not in the
foreseeable.

enough already, just bring it on.

It's good to see you back G-man. So glad you're finally getting the weather you want. Enjoy every second of it mate, because you moved to Renmark to experience this kind of weather. smile

PS: Yeah 49C is much much easier to reach than 50C, even though they're only a degree apart. 49 is pretty well the limit our landmass can hold, it takes extraordinary circumstances to go higher. And I think 925mb temps are better guideline of what the weather will be like rather 850mb temps. You can generally add 10 or even 11C to those temps and that will be very close to your maximum. So 37C 925mb temps should equal about 47C or even 48C at Renmark.

Pretty rare in Adelaide and surrounding areas to see temps in the high 30s with due points in the mid-high teens as we currently have. Adelaide (Kent Town) at 12:20pm reports 37.5/17.3 and Adelaide airport 38.1/16.5.

Given what I'm seeing on latest model runs, tomorrows temp will be bumped up across the board by 2 or 3 deg.

I'd say 43 or 44 for Adelaide
47 or 48 for Renmark (maybe 49 even, crazy stuff!!!)

Dragonflies were out in force this morning. Even more than pre-storm for the underhyped trough.

Hope they did ok. Seeing lots of dead ones around the place.

At least Bruce my frontporch orb spider will get a good feed. Not that he really needs it.

I like your anti-establishment gusto and conviction in your own forecasting Jet.

Here's the nice BOM lady to tell us why this is happening (for those of us who don't already know)

I don't think it'll quite make the forecast. Just shy of 41 for me - although it'll feel just like it or worse.
(used meteoearth, the dragonflies and my gutfeel for my prediction- the Chris model is always meteoearth - gutfeel and an animal)

Yeah I'm very surprised at that, I guess they only forecast using there models. As I pictured about, GFS tells a different story.

They got it wrong today. Forecast was 41, so far the maximum is 42.2.

Geezer look at Moomba, 46.6!!

It's not my own forecast Chris, its right in front of all of us. Perhaps GFS isn't correct and not accurate one, it's what I've used to pull those temps from.

I'm not entirely sure Bluey. Have narrowed down their activities to -
feeding
and/or mating.

As for what triggers it? I'm going to do some research when I get home. It could be something like an abundance of smaller insects they like to eat.

Usually for me personally - Dragonflies indicate thunderstorms or wet after/during warmness. This time obviously not.

Tomorrow's forecast by the BOM for Adelaide could well be right. A weak surface trough will give the coastal areas some relief tomorrow and that will just influence the city enough to hold the temp down to 41, yes "down" to 41 lol.

Just on the dragonflies -

I don't think they're simply looking for a cooler spot.

They look like they're hunting to me.
Sorry about the music - put it in when I was leaning towards mating.

Need to full screen HD. Still doesn't do the size of the group justice.

So a swarm on the day of the storm (of the underrated trough Jan.)
And a swarm today.
Maybe I can find some correlations with the weather data.
(Correlate isn't causation I know I know)

PS: Yeah 49C is much much easier to reach than 50C, even though they're only a degree apart. 49 is pretty well the limit our landmass can hold, it takes extraordinary circumstances to go higher. And I think 925mb temps are better guideline of what the weather will be like rather 850mb temps. You can generally add 10 or even 11C to those temps and that will be very close to your maximum. So 37C 925mb temps should equal about 47C or even 48C at Renmark.

Thanks dude! Latest GFS update is 100% epic for tomorrow. 4pm 85hpa temps are at 30C and even a patch of 31C just to the NW. 925hpa is at 38C. At 4pm today, these values are 26C and 33 respectively. Today it officially hit 43C so in theory tomorrow could hit at least 47C.

Some of the locations which hit 46C today (i.e. Roxby Downs, Woomera) did it with 36C 925hpa temps and 28-29C 850 temps.

BOM still going for "only" 45C, if GFS comes off it will surely be more. They almost certainly will get the 44C for Mildura wrong, I mean at the latest update it is 43.5C there and the 925/850 temps tomorrow are progged to be 4C warmer.

Nah the wick has just dried out.... same thing happened earlier today at Kent Town when everyone went crazy over the 'feels like 62C' rofl....

Loxton's DP would be about the same as others, eg. Renmark's

Tomorrow is a tricky one. Hotter air aloft at 850hPa, but weak sfc trough will push north during the mid to late morning turning winds w then sw to s gradually freshening into the mid afternoon. Will be an early max for Adelaide probably, if the change is even one hour late, 44C is a real shot. I'll go for 43C given the very hot air up top atm. 31C 850hPa temps over Port Aug area tomorrow arvo and a N wind....they are a real shot at 48C (probably rounded). Other usual spots to be watched as well (Kyancutta, Tarcoola, Renmark, Whyalla, Mildura). Roseworthy might crack 45C before the change.

Still 35C at Noarlunga where sfc inversion cannot form properly due to the topography.

TS cool

33.6C at Mt Lofty at 1am, hottest place in Adelaide, of all places! Even Melbourne is getting in on the action with numerous 30C plus readings there, after missing out on summer thus far. Ofcourse, the disgusting cold outbreak on Sunday will sort them out.

31.0C on my PWS, low so far 30.6C. 33.6C at 1:30am in Mildura shocked

NSW Outback has some truly epic readings, including 36.9C at White Cliffs, 36.8C at Tibooburra, 36.6C at Fowlers Gap. Pure 100% legendary

Today will be an epic day.

Whoa shocked all the fours 44.

I wonder if they'll upgrade it at 5:20? I know it's only three degrees but those are some very significant degrees.

I'm keeping my expectations contained.
Pretty sure the very marrow in my bones will sublimate out of my face at 44c.

Looking forward to it. If it's going to be hot at least give us marrow sublimation via face.

this is gunna evaporate any water we've got over the last
few weeks real quick. well it is summer anyway, 'bout time
we got a size 12 up the backside, we've had it too good
for too long this summer.
RS, it's warm down there for you, you be rolling in it
like the proverbial farm dog in.......
bit cooler for you tomorrow though while the rest of the
state gets cooked bar certain coastal areas.
an increase in DPs is on the menu so the uncomfortable
factor is going to ramp up.
my aircon will run all night at a sizzling 23
sparrow fart start for work tomorrow and an early minute
or 60 to go home. better than a slap in the face with a
dead fish.
yer TS that change is going to be a life saver of sorts,
GFS has it running right over adelaide on the 7.30 map
and on the 10.30 map has it running from bordertown to
the iron triangle across to kimba and off to ceduna-nullabour.
the biggest problem is for adelaide it appears it will not
be a gusty change which would induce a rapid cooldown, things
are going to happen slowly or seem not to happen at all, at
least it will cut the worst off the top end.
no power loss here thankfully.

good one StL, always wanted to get myself a flying deckchair.
take it easy with the heat mate.

dragonflies come from mudeyes which live in water and are a
sign of a good season as far as rain goes. it's their
breeding season now, like butterflies, dragonflies are the
final winged stage of their lifecycle.

Just a pity a few dont have what it takes to handle it.
Turn up the wick I say.
Been a good year for turkey shooting, must be the weather.
Time to etch another stamp into the side of mahlappy me thinks.
Two more daysof this and then relief, looks like it's going

You poor fellas, I live in the outer the South-West suburbs of Melbourne. Was a bloody hot night for us too, low of 27.3C. Was 37C yesterday in my neck of the woods and just touched 35.7C today. Temps should cool down around Melbourne now that the southery is through.

Sorry I have to disagree Galaxyman, I think we have had a pretty decent Summer in Melbourne, not to hot but warm enough and plenty of Sunshine. Statistics alone are not enough to define what it's been like in Melbourne this Summer, also the outer burbs where I live are always a tad warmer too.

Tarcoola 48.2C at 338pm.

Pallamana (near Murray Bridge)surprisingly topped out at only 32C. Been in a SSW airstream all day which snuck behind the eastern side of the ranges.

Recorded a max of 37.5C yesterday at home under the fig tree (my un-official weather station). Temperature probably affected by transpiration from a heavy leaf canopy as well as the fluttering of the wings of the rainbow lorikeets who are currently helping themselves to the ripening figs smile

Loxton's at 46.5C and only 0.6 off their record.
Tarcoola and Woomera have broken their February records which is impressive.

City has somehow now managed to get up to 41C.

temps here made an early high then steadily declined to
hover around 30ish, really nice outside now, got the
webber cranking, while it's going to technically be cooler
tomorrow the difference is not going to be huge but
the next 2 days are a downhill slide until we fall over
the cliff into sunday.

Yeah I agree Weather_Viewer! Sorry Galaxyman but I am sick, sick, sick of hot, dry weather as it brings the bushfire risk in my corner of Melbourne - today's heat was too much for me, all the more because of the TFB we have in place!! mad

Would gladly trade it for either a lively cold outbreak with hailshowers and alpine snow, or "perfect summer weather" (sunny with temps in the mid-20s to low-30s), or a monsoonal system/ex-tropical cyclone/low pressure trough/cold front/etc with heavy rainfall and an outbreak of severe thunderstorms. Heatwaves are not welcome thank you, and I'm sure many other Victorian Weatherzoners will agree. frown

After a long and humid day in town and also doing chook mustering along with searching and locating the stragglers who didn't hear the bed time call then putting them to bed i managed to download all the data from yesterdays hot weather and well below is an extract of recordings where the temp started climbing till it hit smack bang on 40.1 before 6pm then slowly made its way down to more comfortable levels this morning

Very impressive for Yunta considering they are 300m ASL. No surprises with Tarcoola winning the state today with 48.2C. Bloody impressive. Port Aug gave it a shake though 47.2C not bad at all. Keen to see Kyancutta's Max at 9am tomorrow given 46C at 3pm, prob be a 47C as well out there.

Very strange distribution of heat today, northern plains struggled, Roseworthy normally dominates but struggled all day, Edinburgh similar. City struggled but managed 41C still...perhaps a bit of sheltering from the S/SSE flow from ranges and the WSW flow was quite weak through there, with most of it pushing more strongly into the northern plains and gulf areas into YP and E EP...with a curl around cross the Edinburgh/Roseworthy area. Yet Snowtown boils with 45.4C not much further N/NW. Very strangely aligned trough boundary that's for sure.

And now, with the seabreeze almost stopped dead, the air has begun a late cook again and airport surged to a 39.2C max at 5:50pm, and increasing dewpoint with it as the shallow seabreeze air cooks good and proper. Was 38/22 not long ago, some of most humid air I can remember feeling in Adelaide. Almost a small slice of Darwin.

Be a very humid evening unless gully wind can mix down a bit and push some drier air down from above the inversion.

TS cool

Same crazy temps out there my lord. Been nicer through the south today, at times driving with the windows down around Victor then air-conditioning on 16deg back through the Southern suburbs where the heat started cranking again.

Looking forward to Sunday and the main SSW change with some deep cool air behind the bars flushing out this hot jail garbage grin

Hottest day I've ever recorded here on the outskirts of Booborowie... recorded an all-time high of 48.3C. Last time it was this close was Feb 7, 2009 where we recorded 48.0C. We've been recording since 2002.

Thanks Jet Entrance! And I enjoy reading your posts too mate, as well as the South Australian thread in general. Helps me keep tabs on what's happening to the northwest and whether it'll have any impact here in Victoria. smile

Glad we're finally getting a welcome reprieve from the heat! Going to feel a bit muggy for the next couple of days, although the cold front scheduled for Sunday/Monday will feel invigorating, not-to-mention be a shock to the system! eek

That's pretty up there all right.

My garden, as example, sure is showing signs of heat stress here in Adelaide, and that's with 2 inch of rain just a couple of days ago. Cycling home yesterday through Uni SA Campus Magill spotted a koala limp on the ground with a water bowl and sign "please leave alone"... 48+ detrimental conditions.

Well, what can I say. What an epic day that is to be remembered. We officially hit 47.1C at the airport BOM station. This is a different kind of heat. Completely different realm from even 40C. Objects outside become almost too hot to touch. Any metal in the sun is a branding iron and could be used as a very effective torture device. Spiders hang dead from the roof outside with a single strand of silk, something I've never seen before. Birds were gathering under my car, gasping for air. I went to the bottle shop right in the hottest part of the day and the road tarmac was actually melting in places, you could see the tyre tracks left as cars smear the melting asphalt.

Overnight low was 30.6C on my PWS. Mildura didn't drop below 31C. The situation is truly epic. Tomorrow could reach 45C going by current models. Currently 30.0/20.6C. Meanwhile 33.6C down the road in Mildura. Some highly impressive midnight readings currently, including 35.4C in Broken Hill and 36.9C in White Cliffs.

Some pics from today:

dead spiders

It tends to over read in clear weather but you get the idea

heat sometimes has some unpleasantries

While I respect your preferences (everyone has their own), I really do not care if you or anyone else doesn't agree with mine. I have my own weather preferences and enjoyment and I will continue to enjoy them regardless, without being made to feel guilty about bushfire risks and what not. Most of the Vic weatherzoners seem to be allergic to anything over 20C and treat any typical summer warmth in Melbourne like its plutonium, even though the ubiquitous cool change is a mere hours away most of the time, along with its days of low 20's and cloud. When compared to other summer climates in the world, the hyperbole on the Vic forums whenever the temp dares climb is plain hilarious, especially as Melbourne has the worst/shortest/coolest/most cool seabreeze/cool change-infested summers on average of any Australian city bar Hobart. What would they do if they lived in the deep South US, the Med, SE Asia, the desert cities in the Middle East and the US Southwest or the Pilbara for instance?

Personally, I'd ban all southerlies from Nov 1 to Mar 31, wintry outbreaks have a time and place - winter.

I will agree with ya on the thunderstorms though. They've sadly been nonexistent in my area this summer. Last event that actually put on a show here was in November.

Heat I can handle, humidity is the killer poke

One plus of this weather, I don't have to try and trap the mouse living under the pavers, smells like the heat took care of him and the trail of ants leads me to beleive i won't need to clean it up either.

the end of this is going to be an anticlimax, if any rain is
to be had at all it will be minimal, possible storms north
of pt. augusta and northern ep area, marginally possible
over eastern riverland. a bit of cloud and much cooler is
about as much excitement as there is on offer.
by the end of this next period of uneventful mildness the
sds will be firmly entrenched have anyone who cares well
and truly by the jugular.

I can tell you one thing my free range chook flock is one tough nut of a flock when it comes to surviving extreme heat such as was demonstrated by Mother Nature on Tuesday and Wednesday not only did they survive without dropping like flies but proved to be the toughest breed alive in the harsh bush heat

You are right about that Thunda the SDS will be firmly entrenched and reaching for everyone's jugular after this mind numbing uneventful mild weather coming up

38.2C just down the road in Mildura at 11:15PM shocked Meanwhile for comparison a lame 20C in Melbourne, 16C in Warnambool and 17C in Mt Gambier. Damn. I would be so pissed if I lived south of the divide.

33.8/22.3 on my PWS and is that a developing cell I see on radar heading my way?

I'm not really surprised to see cells around the place Teck. The sky looked pretty menacing across the gulf at sundown. Plenty of convection happening around here late afternoon. I think I may have scored a funnel. I'll check shortly

gfs forecast soundings were showing a concrete slab inversion
around the upper gulf yesterday, buckland radar is confirming
it.
looks like i'm not the only one caught out by this with my
pants down. always a case of watch yer back, pity i can't
follow my own advice. the one you miss out on is the one
you'll never get.
let's see what today brings, probably a case of the horse
has bolted but i will reiterate........
WATCH YER BACK.
more input please TS, quick look at the charts is telling me
upper gulf mid north but were not excluded from the loop.

Yer I'm sure he will pop on here later with analysis.... it was ACCESS-R that showed it apparently.
Basically rapid cooling of mid-levels and upper divergence.

Today, think the Upper Mid North has a chance a storm otherwise we are just looking forward to that cool change to get rid of this blasted humidity.

wow StL, how cool is that, a cone with too much icecream.
great capture.

yer Tek i looked for it on gfs and others but was still
scratching my head over it.
the mid and upper divergance is crazy south of adelaide today.
300hpa winds are also converging into a bit of an upper trough
as well.
we already got stuff going up over southern ep again.
the northern inversion is dispersing well.
gfs has the divergance/trough line south of us and moving
north as the avo progresses into evening.
convective indexes like LIs and CAPE are non existant for any
southern stuff, anything that goes up is through forcing from
2 ways, being dragged kicking and screaming by the scruff of
the neck from above and getting a size 12 boot up the clacker
from below.
just out of interest i measured the angle of attack of those
cells over southern ep, they are making a beeline straight for
the southern burbs, not that i'm concerned about those cells,
its the steering winds i'm interested in and referencing them
with model predictions. i drew a line on my screen and then
referenced that line over the model streamlines.
BSCH gfs has steering winds slightly more to the NW which if
was correct would have those cells going through victor
harbour.
other WZ models including gfs are on the money which for me
confirmed their accuracy as far as winds go and now means
that they can be relied on in reference to this arvo and
this evening.
it also means that in the possibility that something does
go up on lower ep i can cross reference it to the steering
line and work out well in advance where i might want to be.

at the time noarlunga aws was 23.something and 61%.

quick check weatherzone layers visible sat, just noticed
another cloud wave anomoly over ceduna.

Convection firing on the northern lofties/flinders, hopefully there's some storms around to ease the pain of this heatwave. See if it can mix out enough for something half decent, will probably struggle.

Had a few rumbles, flashes and a shower around 3.30-4.00am. Nothing special but a bonus considering the forecast said "clear".

Central Hills 5-10 degrees cooler than the plains last couple of days...something I didn't realise was possible with north-easterly wind from a heat trough. Probably some other local microclimatic factors involved judging by the magnitude of difference.

i think the emphasis will be on struggle.
up there forecast soundings where convection is possible
there is a concrete cap of around 6-7
where there is a decent lesser cap convection is not possible
'os the uppers go way too hot too quick.
the best chance appears to be down near the riverland where
there is lesser cap AND cooler uppers to allow for convection
up to around 30thou' but the window of opportunity is narrow.
looking at the sat it appears the cells around flinders to
broken hill are in the area of little or no cap and are
convecting up to where the hot uppers start, going by
forecast soundings about 14thou' cloud base to about
17-18thou' tops.
the clear area around the mid north and iron triangle
is where ther is some LI and CAPE but it's also where the
cap is and so no convection is taking place at all.
the thing is with this particular type of cap is not just
the temp, it's the thickness, it runs from around 2thou'
to 10thou' and with lcl running around 6,5thou' is why
there's no cloud there.
that's to the best of what i know, if something does go up
there then i'm gunna have to shirt front TS and ask him
why 'os it'll have me stuffed.
that stuff poking down toward morgan is looking for the
best chance.

Ironically, think it was Sky News recently, but not sure...anyway, whoever they were (forecast news service) they forecasted 33 for the Central Hills (yesterday), when it turned out to be 5 degrees higher...apparently continued to mention the figure even when it was clearly not being observed...oh well, I guess don't rely on one source is the moral of the story smile . Grain of salt stuff...until the weather patterns are better understood.

Plus, the breeze from the ESE has picked up a bit, time to open up the house.

unfortunatly even in this day and age of high speed
everything tv news and weather services seem to be
notoriously slow to react to changing situations, even
with bushfire and pending short term severe weather events,
although things are slowly on the improve, a situation
like yours is probably a little less clear cut in regards
to importance, extremely important to you and others
affected, not so important in the big picture of entire
australia, bit hard to watch every microscale change or
anomaly happening every where and updating in near real
time. it's a matter of priorities and resources, i'm
sitting on the fence here and i can see and understand
what you're saying but i can also see their situation as
well. you simply cant build an Eiffel tower with a hundred
bucks and a few bits of steel.

Yea the 'surprise' storms the other night certainly caught many off guard, myself included but it does pay to check models beforehand as it would have revealed some potential for elevated storms. Big jet to the south, with a broad NW Entrance zone present over our area increasing upper divergence. Bit of a 'squeeze' of the flow aloft plus combined with the VERY warm to hot low level air with some cooling of the mids just above a very moist layer of Castellanus around 10-12,000ft. That cooling of the mids and the very warm air below just increased instability so didn't take much effort to promote lift, upper divergence just added the tonic aloft. ACCESS-R had Showalter Index down to about -2C which is sufficient enough for some weak elevated thunderstorms minus much of a sfc trough at all, which was located well inland. GFS did not show things as clearly at all. Didn't really check EC, but suspect it would have been similar....

Definitely a tricky one!

TH

It probably doesn't matter that much anymore because the knowledge base for understanding how the weather works is far greater than any 5- or 10-minute news spiel could capture in one news segment. I've invested enough time and effort to get my own [private] ideas/models of how the weather works up and running smile .

Unfortunately, unless underlying understanding of what weather maps show is reasonably concrete - in theory - that's where it does get novel, or more of a curiosity re: news segments. It is not that it is difficult to understand; however, it can be very time-consuming...which may be a bit of a put-off. If you're livelihood or daily activities depend more heavily on weather forecasts...then that is a different matter, and it might be worth investing in equipment and the like.
