Richmond 39 today with breeze nor east/ nor nor east since midday. Getting ridiculous now. Only one place in the state hitting 40. Bourke at 41ish. Some consolation I guess

37C given today, although car thermometer going past the airport was definitely hotter after 3pm, so that may be adjusted yet.
Could definitely feel the heat sting again at work today and driving home, it is going to die hard one would think this summer.

I open the windows and get the (summerweight) doona out when we have nights like this week. usually I sleep most nights in summer under a doona, the nights have been very warm this summer. It's easier living on a farm, only the distant sounds of the neighbour's dogs and the flapping of the fruit bats to disturb me. Even the frogs are quiet at the moment, though the tree frogs come around the windows at night. Frogs don't disturb me anyway, I like sleeping to the sound of frogs, though they disturb some city folk at night.

Sorry. I forgot to add 'legs'. he he he

Bom has backed off a few degrees for Newcastle for Saturday. Now 30. I think yesterday it was 32 from memory.

@ Steve. Do you see this summer breaking a record at Obs Hill? After the past few days are factored in and this next heat up tick. I know recall you posting on this not long back

Not sure I'd take too much notice of Newcastle Nobbys Head anyway, probably about as much as Yamba.

Bellambi is like that as well. Does not give a good representation of the weather in the majority of the area.

@ Derek. Yes the forecast for Newie is for beachside Newcastle. Nobby's site doesnt have much relevance for those who live out Glendale way etc. Be interesting if there was data that shows the extent of seabreeze penetration in Newcastle (be good for any large town or city on the coast). By data, I mean what suburbs mark the delineation between seabreeze and no seabreeze. I mentioned Glendale which can often be 10 degrees hotter than Nobbys on a summers day. But what suburbs does the boundary slice through. You simply can't talk about a generic weather forecast now for places like Newcastle where a lot of the population no longer lives right near the coast

@ Wave. Just noticed your Bellambi comment. Agree

At OH, January had the warmest mean min and max on record. February so far, including forecast temps, is tracking above the record for mean min and max. December just missed a record mean minimum and had the third highest mean max. A record Summer is on the cards, even if the last 5 days of Feb come in average.

--------

As often stated here, including by me, OH does not represent what most Sydneysiders experience. It's an odd site. Its exposure means it might not be as heat-island affected as its central location might suggest, but then it catches sea breezes that most Sydneysiders that far from the beach don't get.

But Sydney is a city of microclimates, nowhere is 'typical'. Still, I think Olympic Park might come closest once its got a long enough record. Certainly, when comparing Sydney with other cities for frequency of heatwaves or 'liveability' of climate, it would make a better comparison with, say, Brisbane and Perth (about the same distance inland) and probably Melbourne.

Just my opinion.

------------

Warm and windy tonight, sea gales going full blast. Interesting to see if the promised storms arrive tomorrow.

There is a storm cell just north of me by about 15km. I wish the damn thing moves just south and help me water my thirsty yard. I have our big irrigation system on just keeping our yard alive for the next day or two.

Wind off the water is balmy. Feel like I fell asleep and woke up on a tropical island

Currently we feel like the Egyptians when Moses plagued the land with frogs. Mind you, it looks like our dams have turned red with blood from the clay soil we have.

What next? The gadfly? I hope not! It has been a bit quiet without the mozzies annoying us due to the dry spell.

I've watching too much Charlton Heston lately frown

I haven't crunched the numbers. My last post was an assessment based on comparing this Summer's averages to the records.

My guess is 1991, which had three hot Summer months, including record or near record minima. Things got back to normal in March.

I don't think it's 1896. December was hot, January the old record for max but February was cool. Minima were warm by then standards but a degree or two below the record.

Anyway, the BOM will crunch the numbers at the end of the month.

You can never get too much Heston Jabo. A nice little cinematic experience is a big slice of the Ten Commandments. Followed by a hefty serving of Ben Hur. Rounded out with a dollop of Planet of the Apes and washed down with a finger of Soylent Green.

There's a little storm just to the north of Sydney on radar. Steve? Any visuals?
