It looks like me may get a warm day in Vic this coming Wednesday, then return to coolish (by February standards) weather till next Sunday onwards??

Dont know yet how warm, but surmising circa 34-37C in Vic's southern sector???

Could next weeks warm day (or two?) be the warmest/equal warmest we reach for the remainder of this summer/autumn season?

.....just a conversation starter, post your own guesses up! - nothing wrong with a bit of speculation eh?

....ooops, first time I've noticed a IMGUR site busy notice like this, tried to re-do the attachment - so hope the image "comes good" by itself later!?

Thanks petros no storm chasing for us for long while yet.

Warm air-mass returning to Northern Victoria tomorrow to stay warm to hot until most days of GFS chart update.

For South of divide rages real warmth to hot likely this Wednesday and next week Tuesday, Wednesday.
as other days will be average 20c to 25c.

If keep clear days then Melbourne City Building heats up to give warmth too.

Re potential air-mass temps into next week, this is GFS's latest guess:

..... all the purple hot areas inland Aus have disappeared over the past days, and look to remain the same into March!

I think I speak for us all in that the chances of a searing NW'ly extremely hot event for Vic is now looking very unlikely for the remainder of this summer???

We can look forward to, and enjoy, "Indian Summers" through March/April hopefully smile

Hope you're right Petros! Still, wouldn't quite rule out a stray 40C reading (or close to it) for the Mallee region between now about about mid-March.

I just hope we get a few stormy days tossed in before the end of April. smile

Lovey 30c at 12pm and was cool of 11.1c overnight.

Thanks "Indian Summers"

Our Easterly dip High Pressure still continue with troughs to make SW winds weaken and NW winds don't last either is good.

But not in this tread yet is heatwave is looming after March 3rd from Half of West Australia too early yet.

Nice! Bring it on! Yay!! smile

Reached a nice hot 34.4C here in Belgrave, and at the last check it was still around 29C. Wunderbar! grin

The hot Sun was offset by a fresh, cooling northerly breeze while I was in the City. Still a bit breezy atm, with high cirrus clouds.

Despite the TFB, the rain we had recently has been more than enough to halt the bushfire risk in my area. smile

The cool change appears to be sluggish over Western Victoria, so I can look forward to a balmy evening here in Melbourne. smile

Reached at 34c 5pm light winds

Now warm at 8pm of 30c stable no winds.

Dry cool change overnight help easy sleep.

Getting noticeably cooler here in Belgrave, around 25C at the last check. The change is moving into Melbourne's west now, and should cross into our side of the Bay in around an hour or so. smile

No storms or at least heavy rainfall with it sadly. But hoping we get at least a couple of showers in the morning to moisten the place up a tad more. smile

Edit: actually it's getting warmer! Around 26C right now, but it doesn't quite feel it though with this breeze.

The cool change moved in around 20 minutes ago. We had a very late temperature spike beforehand, peaking at 28.6C at 11:18pm! eek crazy

Still around 24C atm, so the change is fairly weak. poke

Didnt notice any cool change here last night, woke to 16.9C and a sunny 30C day recorded here today smile

Latest GFS run continues to show a last "extreme heat Hurrah" for SE Aus is now looking unlikely:

Most BOM reports are for a dry period to come, so fires will still flare, but hopefully in manageable weather conditions for the remainder of this Vic fire season?

It wasn't a "proper" cool change Petros, sure the temperature did cool down nicely in my neck of the woods after the late-evening spike, but today was only a few notches cooler than yesterday. poke

Reached a warm, mostly sunny 28.8C here in Belgrave today. Pity I was again stuck indoors in the City for the most part, but I got to enjoy a pleasant evening outdoors, before it got too cold after 8:30pm. Currently around 17C. smile

Reached a top of only 21.2C here in Belgrave today. Apart from a short-lived warm-up when the Sun briefly broke through around mid-afternoon, it's been coolish and cloudy all day. Currently around 18C. Almost no wind, and no rain whatsoever. poke

Looking forward to the much warmer summerlike weather to come from Sunday onwards! At least it won't be too hot (or too cold either lol). wink

This last warm period for the 2016/17 summer looks to be prolonged, but modest, going by latest GFS run:

I wouldn't necessarily call it the last warm period for the 2016/2017 summer season. We can get hot spells/heatwaves well into March, and the occasional one in April, with a few last final warm spells in May before winter sets in. smile

Since my last post we've had a tad more excitement weatherwise. But if you call a few glimpses of blue sky around dinnertime and a few light showers and drizzle around 10pm "excitement", then that's all I got. poke

Otherwise, a calm, coolish and mostly cloudy evening, with temperatures around 17-18C while I was down in Wantirna South and later Endeavour Hills with my family and friends. It stayed dry, except for those light sprinkles of rain I mentioned while in Endeavour Hills around 10pmish. smile

Back home here in Belgrave it's around 14C. smile

The drizzly day forecast for this area did not eventuate. Cloud 6/8 in morning cleared gradually to about 3/8 by late afternoon. Clouded up around 5pm then looking like drizzle a possibility but nothing so far. Mild with little wind. Several days of sun on the way.

....but March isn't Summer!

Yep we can get hot weather in March. Anybody betting that we will experience any?

GFS for next week still looks to be warm (but not "hot" by locational standards for this time of the year):

....and at this stage no significantly wet change to follow this spell.

A dryish Autumn looms? - better tips on this are available on the ESNO thread.

A heavily overcast day here with persistent SE'ly breeze, 21C atm, I recorded 24C max (which might have been the temp when I reset my gauge last evening).

If someone gave me decent odds, I might bet on a "last hurrah" in mid-March - not that's there's anything particularly in the models to suggest it (looking, eg, at extended GFS.

I'm not a "tropical watcher" (and certainly have no skill) but the tropics do look to have gone very quiet and indications seem to be for them to stay that way. So, without a significant shift in the south, I wouldn't be expecting rain of any consequence in the near future.

What, Petros, would be necessary to set up an ECL situation at this time of year?

Err yes you're right Petros, yes March ISN'T summer. March is autumn. Sorry for the confusion, I should've mentioned the 2016/2017 warm season in general, not summer specifically, my bad. blush

Reached a warm, mostly sunny top of 25.0C here in Belgrave. Perfect weather for being down in Box Hill and later in Glen Waverley, except for a rather coolish breeze from the south. smile

Last time I checked it was around 17.0C. A cool night ahead, but looking forward to the warmer weather ahead! smile

For us oldies, Petros, the Autumn Equinox will always happen around the 21st of March, whether meteorologists like the "neatness" of the 1st of the month or not. So for me, when day and night are of equal length - at the end of Summer - it is Autumn. Can't fool the sun OR the moon :-D

Good point exKNMI, this summer period has certainly been odd in our bit of Gippsland compared to other years, very low rainfall and some wind, but can't remember a 40C or above day.

Unless of course a hot one hit when we were in Marlo/Hobart during Jan.

Very dry here, bgr all rain in the last 3 months and everything has dried off again after the handy 17mm a few weeks back. 20C no wind and blue skies here atm.

TB - I bet you know more about these than I do given your age and location wink

Anyhow, to share my own experience (so what I write here is my own interpretation only, based on observations I've recorded since the early '80's, for GIPPSLAND (only)):

There's two creators:

1. From an Easterly Dip. Only possible during summer/early March - created by a prolonged heat low over NSW/QLD that has persisted for many days. The low pressure system "sags down" over Vic, and with moist NE'ly infeed coming in from a warm ocean off Sydney, sets off rainfall in SE Vic - including the possibility of a ECL off SE NSW.

In fact the above scenario is a low possibility of developing into the week after next going by GFS this arvo (rain at Merimbula):

2. The other, most typical as I'm sure your aware, is the cut-off low. This can happen at any time of the year. Typically preceded when the AusSatIR shows a thick NW cloud band steaming into Vic all the way from circa Pt Headland in WA. If the arrival of this "moisture band" is in place when a cold air "cold change" system streams into Vic from the SW heading NE, this can leave a localised low pressure system over SE Vic, even though the initiating system has swept by us to NZ.

Its these (No.2) systems that make our (N Gippy) long term rainfall stats "flat" for every month of year (our rainfall is non seasonal). For N Gippy, it basically doesn't rain, or we get deluged by an ECL!

Today we had a fresh SSE'ly and mild sunny day (after a "jumper-on" evening last night) 26C.

Easterly Dip been doing it for most of January then February short SW/W cool winds the now back to Easterly Dip.

East and South of Victoria get isolated showers and rest of West Half dry to Hot.

No storm-chasing for us for another week as East Victoria is chance

According to my PWS it hit 35.3C here in Tarneit, outer southwestern suburbs of Melbourne. Definitely warmer than forecast, tomorrow looks to be the same if not warmer in my opinion.

Reached a hot 36.9C on my thermometer here at home in Belgrave today... but I doubt it actually got THAT hot! Sure was toasty, but more likely to have been around 33-34C. poke

Overnight low of 14.4C btw. A cool morning when I left for work at 7:30am, just comfortable enough to walk around without needing pants or a windcheater, even though some cars (not including mine lol) had dew on them. smile

Looked hazy at times, especially towards the north and west (particularly this morning on my way to Boronia), but otherwise a hot, dry, mostly sunny day with a slight cooling breeze. smile

At the last check it was around 33C. Looking like another balmy evening, and then another hot day tomorrow. wink

A cool foggy 13C morning cleared to a fine mild 29.6C here with a nice seabreeze.

BBQ conditions!

Looks very interesting as I surprised that Low pressure trough will burst heavy rain with East flow tropical all along SE QLD to East/SE Victoria for rest of next week.

Thunderstorms would more likely inland mixing with heat.

A cool foggy 14.5 C morning cleared to a fine mild 34C here with a nice (late) seabreeze.

BBQ conditions (again)! - I think I'll "crack a can"

We escaped another devastating summer!! Dams still healthy, tame fire season (with apologies to those who did get impacted by fire), paddocks have still got (albiet burnable) dried grass on them, and no searing 4 day hot events with 40++ temps and howling NW'ly winds ahead of gusty SW'ly changes. smile smile

Bring on the Indian summers! - I'm sure the majority of us enjoy those!

My PWS hit 36.0C this afternoon.

I wasn't at home to feel the conditions in the outer burbs in Tarneit. Quite a few local PWS reflected a similar temp, pretty hot. Another one lined up tomorrow!

Reached 37.7C here in Belgrave, following an overnight low of 16.9C. Actual temperature would've been closer to around 34-35C, but there was no denying the fact that the last day of summer was hot! poke

I noted a few smoke plumes on the way home from Boronia from possible grassfire/bushfire activity (in Lysterfield/Rowville, and towards Emerald), but didn't get a chance to view the CFA or Emergency Services Victoria websites.

Had a slight breeze to partially offset the heat, but otherwise it was a hot, dry, mostly sunny day.

Currently around 25C. smile

Sad to say goodbye to summer once again. :'(

Won't miss it a bit asf, with 32.5mm for the YEAR we are now very dry in this corner of Vic.

Spoilt with last years dream run of 7 inches in January without doubt.

Looking forward to some very settled weather, APRIL/MAY being some of the best IME.

Overnight low of 15.8C, reached a hot, dry, sunny 36.9C here in Belgrave today. Still around 33C right now. Getting a moderate/fresh southerly to cool things down a tad. smile

The past two nights have been stifling initially, around 22-23C at midnight, but then cooling down so much that I'd need to throw a blanket over me when I wake up in the morning! eek

Now it's lifting and becoming sunny. Currently around 18C. smile
