LOL you're not wrong! Always sucks when there's a clear winner early in the game. 2015 GF was very exciting because you didn't know who was going to win until the last minutes of the game.

The Cowboys scored the first try in the second half so it probably wasn't until Melbourne scored again that it became obvious who would win.

I enjoyed the game. I feel for the lads up north but am disappointed that Green has come out and had a whinge this morning. They were beaten by a much better team on the night .

Agree, canít understand his whinge tbh, thought the refereeing was pretty good and the Cows won the penalty count. That try where Cecchin obstructed the Cows player was a 50/50 call (despite the idiots in the commentary box, if a referee obstructs the game itís supposed to be a scrum with feed to team in possession). But the Ref didnít miss all those tackles. The injury that hurt them was caused by their own player.

I read a great analysis on a blog somewhere a couple of days ago where the poster said he felt the Cowboys played their GF last week and it would weigh heavy on them in the game last night.

Tbh I don't know why there's a Melbourne team in the NRL. They simply don't care for rugby league (or union) down there. I wonder how many of their supporters are expats from north of the Murray? How many who have played for them since their inception come from AFL states? None I'm guessing. The team is an artificial transplant and imo will never gain anything like the following from locals that the AFL now has in Sydney and Brisbane. How much money have the NRL and Newscorp invested in the Storm? Seems like a waste to me. Yes they've been successful but who in Melbourne really cares? Unlike the AFL, the NRL has not been successful in expanding the game beyond it's traditional strongholds of QLD and NSW. The Adelaide and Perth teams folded after only a few seasons. How many play rugby league in AFL states at grassroots level, and how many genuine local, native supporters of the game are there in Victoria and other AFL strongholds? I think the NRL should admit defeat, pack its' bags and retreat north of the Murray and concentrate on building the game in its' traditional strongholds (to try and counter the growing popularity of aussie rules there, if nothing else).

This is not sour grapes over the Storm's win last night, even though I was hoping for a Cowboy's win. Tbh I don't follow the NRL (or AFL) much. I just wonder why so much time, effort and money have been spent trying to establish the game in a part of the country that has little or no interest in it.

Average crowd attendance is in the top 5 teams.

The biggest ever NRL crowd was the 1999 grand final between Melbourne and St George (107,999) .Of the 20 biggest ever crowds ever recorded in NRL history Melbourne participated in 7 of them.

It shows .

Here's the start of 2017 and the number of games played. Maybe the NRL should drop all those NSW teams underneath them due to lack of support on your logic.

In the Storms early days i believed the money being spent on the club was over the top, still to this day believe the 99 premiership was bought. but now the Storm is ingrained into the NRL with a steady supporter base and as the 2017 crowd averages show do a lot better than most Sydney based teams. having said that, Victorians are well known for getting out and supporting their teams at the ground and not in front of the tele.
will be interesting to watch the crowds at storm games once the current crop of players start retiring.

The AFL have a similar history of throwing big money at clubs to start up. No-one seems to mind now though.

The AFL did with GWS what the NRL did with Storm. Push further into enemy (code) heartland .

Very good points, rugby league will never gain a stronghold in Melbourne at junior or grass roots level.
By contrast, one of my son's school mates from ASC Maitland is playing for the Sydney Swans now.
Yeah and I remember the failed ventures in Perth and Adelaide as well, in fact spent some time in Perth in the 90s, and they both got no support at local level or from the local media.

I had a holiday in WA 10 years ago during footy finals time. The sport section of the Perth newspaper had only a small article on the NRL, just a few paragraphs iirc.
