Only one more week until the NRL season kicks off again!

Will the footy tipping comp be held again this year?

Well I'm already in the Footytips, so joining another comp would be fine with me.

Interesting to see Greg Inglis play on last night. He had clearly ruptured his ACL. The telecast showed the physio examining his knee and I could see from my couch 2000km away that his ACL was gone. I hope he hasn't also caused further damage to his meniscus and collateral as it would have been avoidable.

I don't think anyone expected the Dragons to flog Penrith like this. Panthers have been awful.

Yeah what a rip snorter, that second half was insane! No idea how thurston missed his first field goal, even as a broncos supporter though was glad to see the cowboys come away with the win. Whats that the 4th broncos/cowboys game in a row to go to golden point?!?

I was at the game at Suncorp, and was surprised at the number of fellow Cowboys supporters there.
It was my first ever game at Suncorp and although we had crappy seats at the back row of the top tier, the atmosphere was electric from the kick-off.
The win came at a heavy cost though with Scott, Coote & Winterstein out for a while with injuries and Taumololo out for a week suspension.
I watched the replay yesterday and the only difference was the Cowboys handled the pressure late in the game better than the Broncos.

I'm glad he is staying put Dean..but I'm wary of these huge money long term contracts based on player value when they are in their absolute prime..what if he starts getting niggling injuries, doesnt get on with a coach in the future, doesnt play up to his potential or any number of other factors...man 10 years into the future life of an NRL player is a big gamble for the club and doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room for to retain big future stars (like maybe Coen Hess)or a replacement for JT when he retires...

Yeah, i know it is an insane amount!
But i suppose they have molded him from a young age and like what always happens, they get to that point where they start to excel and then get poached by another club offering more dollars.
The warriors came knocking on his door not long back, offering similar money.
Looks like Gideon Gela-Mosby is going to get a run this weekend, that boy has some talent and speed also.

These contracts have many parameters in place to suit not only the player but also the club. There would be a long term injury clause, reducing the big blokes payments to a mere percentage. There will also be a clause in place to ensure that he could increase his worth if more sponsorship is developed and salary cap increases. There may also be a clause for dissipation of contract if one party is not holding their legal requirement. Get out clauses are normal and the contract the media are printing is at its utmost worth.

It wouldn't surprise me if the future captaincy has been dangled as well. I imagine that both Bolton and Cooper are now on borrowed time, as well as Linnett and Winterstein. Such is the profession.

Moseby is long overdue. The Cowboys really lack genuine speed as evidenced last week. A great talent and it would not surprise me if he bags a multiple this weekend.

These kind of contracts will become the norm as clubs try to stave off, not only rival clubs, but rival codes. I am sure both parties will have appropriate protection in place and the Cowboys would have some sort of insurance for career ending injury. Brave, but good on them, he is a rare talent that I can only see getting better as his experience and knowledge grows.

Last Friday's game between Brisbane and South Sydney should be replayed.

South Sydney's coach Michael Maguire said, "How can I explain the loss to our fans".

He might not be able to but I can. The standard of the refereeing of the match was an absolute disgrace. The refereeing decisions frequently, were more than dodgy, they looked corrupt.

Warren.

Being a South's supporter, and also being at that game personally, there was certainly no love towards the referees that night.

As for the Broncos, there are fighting for the top spot against the Roosters of being South's most hated team after that night too.

For a one city team, which doesn't appear to have a salary cap (mainly players are being paid by third party deals which are not covered by the club - thus exempt), having the ref's in their pocket, supposedly having a super coach of Bennett for most of their time, and only won 6 premierships out of 30 years in the competition? If Brisbane cannot win it this year, they should replace the Queensland Reds in the super rugby!

Well even the biased commentary from Andrew Johns shouting "Go Canterbury" and Gould egging them on, coupled with a ref with blue and white running through his veins could not stop them getting trounced by a Thurston deprived Cowboys outfit.

Despite the Cowboys making some silly errors in the second half the woeful Bulldogs couldn't get up yet Gould thinks the Bulldogs were unlucky. No Gus, just woeful. A lot like you commentary tonight.

Cronulla winning off a forward pass. At least the refs are consistent(ly bad).

No video ref checking? The live gambling must have ended so no need to drag the game out further like they do most nights now. Perhaps the ref had a fifty on the Sharks?

NSW played great in the first half but were very complacent in the second half and got lazy. We should've easily won that game.

Yep,Winger was unmarked, would have been a certain try but thats Hayne for you..always wants to be the hero..the winning try went through a hole where he was supposed to be defending as well..

I wouldn't be writing off NSW just yet.

Surely Munster is a starter though in game 3 on current form?

Munster would be my pick as well but the bloody backflipper (DCE) had another good game against the Warriors tonight so they may still go with him.

Raiders look gooooone. Thought they looked good early on in the season but they're fading away fast. Dragons the same except injuries aren't helping their cause.

And what about the Roosters getting flogged? Didn't see that game but couldn't believe the score when I checked.

Didn't see it either but saw the score on the news. Anyone flogging the Roosters deserves applause. I hate them almost as much as Manly and Parramatta. Speaking of Parramatta, they were gifted a golden point win on a bogus penalty against the Bulldogs. One day the game may go a week without the refs deciding at least one outcome.

I was actually at the game and being a sharkies supporter - was quite pleased I went smile

Especially given I was there with my brother who is an avid roosters fan grin

Yep NSW was four minutes away from holding the trophy, now their twelve months away!!

I wouldn't be writing off NSW just yet.

Surely Munster is a starter though in game 3 on current form?

I might have been too conservative with twelve months, make that two years away!!!.....

Yep, marked 18 mtrs into enemy territory. I tried to find it on youtube but it hasn't gone up yet. Check out this one which was just 4 mtrs longer.

I rememebr watching Souths vs Dragons in 2009 where everything the Dragons did went wrong, and Sandow produced a line dropout that landed in play about the 60m mark, and eventually found the sideline about 15m from the Dragons goal line.

Was a cold windy game at the ANZ that night.

Should never have been signed up to the Titans. Such an over rated player.

Slagging off the coach won't help his case for going elsewhere. Apparently Parramatta's players don't want him returning and rightfully so.

Could be fun watching Hayne against Parramatta this week with Parramatta short priced favourites to smash the Titans.

Some pretty heavy truths in this article.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/op...0caa5ca7eb261a8

"The plane! The plane! The first image is of Jarryd Hayne with energetic feet, true story, blood on his grazed elbows, sweat on a crimson face, grunting and groaning with effort while he chased bullet passes from Colin Kaepernick during the training drills at Levi’s Stadium he needed to nail to get a contract with the San Francisco 49ers. He was a driven and determined individual. It was inspirational stuff. “Whatever it takes,” he barked at 49ers staff. American hustle.

The plane! The plane! The second image is of Hayne before the Gold Coast Titans’ match against the Brisbane Broncos in round 22. He was dawdling around Cbus Super Stadium with his backside hanging out the back of his shorts, with his mouth shut as if he was at a dinner party he never wanted to go to — but now he was stuck at the table. When he dropped a ball during the slow-motion runs before kickoff, he shrugged, sniffed and walked away. It was deflating stuff. Whatever it would take for the Titans, Hayne had no interest in doing it. The bludger. One of the best stories in Australian sport was 10 days from becoming one of the worst.

Or so we thought until yesterday’s emergency talks between Hayne, coach Neil Henry and Titans CEO Graham Annesley led to an announcement of more emergency talks before the emergency is resolved at a later date.

Hayne would want to have a blinder against Parramatta on Thursday night — assuming Henry doesn’t take Kevin Campion’s advice to dump him to reserve grade. Gold Coast board members spent four hours discussing the Hayne-Henry feud after the under-siege player and his under-siege coach had been asked to explain themselves to the under-siege hierarchy. You expected Henry and Neil to walk out and quote The Two Ronnies: “Well, it’s goodnight from me and it’s goodnight from him.” But Annesley and chairwoman Rebecca Frizelle emerged to announce that there was nothing to announce. The Titans made the decision to make no decision. “This is a really, really complex issue,” Annesley said.

The plane! The plane! His stint on Fantasy Island is over. No more big bucks can be guaranteed. No more NRL club. No World Cup selection. Potentially, nothing. It’s sad. It’s a reminder that no athlete can take his position for granted. Opportunities are vanishing for Hayne. The pain, the pain. Two years ago, he was on a bus. The bus was driving him down the Great America Parkway. He was the biggest sports yarn in America. He was a 49er. He captured the imagination of the Australian public for taking on a seemingly impossible challenge, for working his fingers to the bone, for respecting his employers, for reading the playbook morning and noon and night, for following coach Jim Tomsula’s instructions, for dotting all his Is, for crossing all his Ts, for doing everything that was asked of him to achieve something extraordinary.

Those early days and nights at Santa Clara were magic but then Hayne quit the NFL and it was the beginning of the end.

The pain, the pain. Rugby Sevens smelled like a disaster from the beginning because he was doing it for the wrong reasons. It became a disaster. His return to the NRL smelled like another disaster from the beginning he was going back to a partner he had already decided he could live without.

It might have been different at the Parramatta Eels but it was no secret he went to the Titans as a last resort. Because the coin was good. Disaster. Hayne is to blame. Henry is to blame, too. Man management requires the management of all types of men.

The plane! The plane! He could have made it work at the Titans. He just had to spill his blood and sweat like he did at the 49ers. Titans training will be interesting this week. Tell Jarryd that Neil said to tell him he’s playing fullback. Tell Neil that Jarryd said OK.

Hayne should have stayed on the bus at Santa Clara. He should have stayed on the Great America Parkway. That was the long-term dream. That was what his heart was set on. Sport spits out the quitters. What a fall from grace. What damage is being done to his legacy. The stain, the stain."

He's certainly copping it from all sides and has treated the code that made him a success with absolute contempt. In a perfect world no club will take him after this disgraceful display.

There was talk around 2 days ago that if Henry gets the arse, he could replace Hasler at the Dogs.

Both Henry & Hayne have 2018 contracts, but it would be heaps cheaper on the Titans purse to flick Henry than Hayne.

They can both go as far as I'm concerned. Hayne stuffed the whole chemistry of this team as soon as he got here. He had one good season (2009) and other than that he's been mostly rubbish. Not to mention his ego has evidently rubbed off on some of our players as well, which isn't a good thing. Only reason we signed him is for the quick $$, but now it's come back to bite us on the a$$.

Then there's Henry, who at the time, most GC fans were happy with because 'anyone's better than Cartwright'. Wrong. His time is up and he can go too. There's no excuse for the last 3 week's performances, considering we were at nearly full strength for all of those games. If the coach can't get his players up for any game then he needs to go.

I'd pretty well guess that's a world wide occurence.
I bet it's rampant in the yankee NFL,- NBA & NHL etc.

Sadly this is how it played out. The general consensus around the traps is that at least Henry was loyal to the club but Hayne is loyal to no-one.

Brad Athur has come a long way since he was the captain-coach of the Cairns Brothers club.
I think they won the grand final too, in his last game after eight years at the club.

Here's hoping the Cows don't get a touch up by the Broncs tonight.

Wayne Bennett wasn't too happy with the boys getting their arse kicked by Parra. Especially one game away from the semi's as well. Unitab are offering some reasonable prices on any underdogs springing an upset too.

If they Cowboys play well and don't make silly mistakes they should beat them. If the do make lots of silly mistakes, then they will get flogged and their season will end tonight.

Yes the rebound factor after Brisbane's woeful display against the Eels should be a concern to the Cowboys.

Cowboys season is down to Canberra losing their game but it will make little difference. They won't be in the Grand Final anyway.

I hope not,- but I think at about 6pm next sunday the Cows will be packing up at Allianz stadium for a bit of a break.

Michael Morgan deserves a pat on the back for sure, with J.T out for the last 11 or 12 rounds, his game has improved out of sight.
Jake Granville too, has come up a couple of notches.

Fairly strong praise (and warranted) from Bellamy regarding Parramatta's Radradra. The guy is a freak. Hopefully a good game.

Yeah cracker game, on the edge of my seat the final 10 minutes, shame the broncos couldn't find a late try in the last few sets. Not too concerned who wins tomorrows games but would love to see the cowboys beat the mongrel bloody sharks on sunday!

I'm a Storm supporter but wouldn't write Parra off. Hoping the Cowboys can knock the sharks out but not very hopeful. Expect a dirty game from Cronulla.

Great footy for sure..such tough, close contests, just a pity the standard of reffing and bunker calls have been so ordinary...

How good was Taumololo ..240 plus metres againt Gallen and Fifita kept the Cowboys going forward all game..Morgan really stood up as well..such a gutsy performance from the Cowboys.....

Ha ha same. I must admit, Flanagans evisceration of the refs, while hypocritical, was pretty darn devastating.

Rich boy's syndrome.

I wish I was a fly on the wall to see Toovey's face, wherever he was watching from to see his old team go down in flames. The pinnacle of Manly grubs.

What really sticks in my craw is the NRL dishing out fines of $10,000 and upwards to coaches complaining about referees.
There has been so many times ref's boss Tony Archer has admitted the ref made a balls up, and the baldy Jew boy Todd Greenberg still pings them $10,000 !
So, the NRL is issuing a fine for telling the truth!.
It's akin to saying 'Don't you dare front the media and tell the truth'. Very wrong in my book.

I dont watch alot of NRL matches on tv, watched bits and pieces of cowboys game on Sunday at work, from what i saw the Sharks had some calls go their way which assisted in getting some points on the board.

Yep, they scored their last try off a "Stripped" ball penalty that was clearly a knock on.

I am absolutely not kidding. No Matt Scott for the year who is arguably the best forward in the comp, no Thurston for the second half of the year, those among a couple of other injuries...I don't think any other coach would have gotten this team to where they are now other than maybe Bellamy. The Cows have a bloody good future under Green, just wish we snagged him at the Titans.

I agree Green has been exceptional. As I said, the Cowboys are my second team and I gave them no chance in hell against Parra. Exceptional win ,especially down there.

Bellamy definitely a close second for me. Even when they had Smith, Cronk and the rest of their Origin stars out he managed to get the best out of his rookies (Croft, Jacks and co.).

You bet they will. I heard Sterlo at the end of the game carrying on about how the Eels are headed in the right direction, I don't know if I agree. Not only because of Radradra leaving, but because they have too many dumb error-ridden, bad disciplined players in that team which I doubt even Arthur could coach out of them.

Too be honest just a few weeks back I saw them as probably the biggest threat to the Storm but something went wayward tonight.

I reckon Fafita is the most costly player to his own team this year. Total clown.

I don't take any notice of Sterlo. He's just a bald version of Gould. Two of the most biased ,annoying twits ever to have graced the box. Speaking of which, how much better was the commentary tonight without him?

Dirty plays towards the end by the Broncos, which is unlike them. They were more like the Bulldogs at the end, especially Adam Blair.

Blair should have been penalised a couple of times earlier in the game imo. Kept going in late and turning the legs.

All in all, CF, the first half was a beauty.
First ten minutes was full on with uncharacteristic mistakes from both sides.
Then the first 2 or 3 mins of the 2nd half looked like the Broncs may turn it around, but no go.
Billy Slater at 34yo was simply amazing too.

It certainly had everything. I have everything crossed for the Cowboys tonight but am not very hopeful to be honest.

A Cowboys /Storm GF would be a massive win for me personally, but Storm going down to the Roosters would not. I hate the Roosters as much a Manly.

Kane Linnett gets the "dumbest moment" award for the night. They should be going in at 8-0 at half time the Cowboys. Amateur error that one.

Great game, Roosters just weren't with it from the first moment really. I'm glad the Cowboys won.

Up the Cowboys!! Will be a hard ask to beat the storm but geez no one picked them to get this far so anythings possible.
You must be stoked ColdFront, I felt the same back in the 2015 GF, shame the Broncs bombed it last night. Can't wait for next weekend!

True, true you're right grin

Will be a great Grand Final. I'm tipping the Storm to win but geez you can't rule out the Cowboys though. They really are the ultimate underdogs this year.

Even if JT said tonight he would be right for the GF,- no coach worth his salt would pick him in the run-on side. Off the bench maybe. Same with Matt Scott.
This present side have their game fine tuned.

+1 to that! They have proven that they are a great team without Thurston. Plus Ethan Lowe is a brilliant goal kicker, almost as good as Thurston.

Cowboys making the grand final is certainly the Cinderella story of the season.
Unfortunately I think the fairy tale run comes to an end next weekend, but if they play lights out then who knows.
They will be rank outsiders, $1.28 vs $3.73 in the betting.

Yeah, I am no fan of the Storm either, the only time I have ever barracked for Manly was against them.
In fact, the whole Alex McKinnon saga still irks me, as a Newcastle Knights supporter, and Alex being a local Hunter boy.
Although Alex himself holds no grudges against anyone and has got on with his life, the Storm never took any responsibility or accountability for what happened.

That's telling right there. I didn't like the outcome but sadly it was a legal tackle until outlawed and other clubs were doing it too.The NRL were too late acting on it imo. If I were facing a potential law suit I might have closed shop too like the Storm did.

Just two years ago the league finally outlawed the shoulder charge after decades of serious injuries and I suspect the hands in the back of the kicker will be next.

Of course the ignorant that know little about the game (or my partner), but heaps about the underside of bridges are probably unaware that the tackle originated in AFL. But then those same people were also probably unaware that the Raiders were the first team to breach the salary cap way back in 1991 (or the first to get caught?) followed by the Knights, Warriors, Penrith, Bulldogs, Eels ,Storm, Roosters and Sharks.

...and shock horror, the Cowboys were fined for breaching the cap in 2001 by over $200,000 and failing to disclose 3rd party agreements. Salary cap breaches have occurred by several clubs since Melbourne got pinged ,most famously Parramatta. Canberra and Bulldogs were both fined for breaches THIS YEAR .

It was stated by Gus Gould and various other coaches who rallied around the Storm's players that the cap needed urgent review as a coach like Bellamy who keeps turning out star players is hamstrung by a broken system and penalised for producing champion players, many of who are now in other teams.

Gould also suggested the method in which the board of the Storm were using to hide payments was likely rife in the code. Gallop is strongly rumoured to have been pinged by the NRL for the manner in which he revoked previous trophies and players medals and despite their howls of protest back when they lost to Melbourne in the Grand Final , Parramatta were later found to be in serious breach of the cap in the same year laugh

The current CEO has chosen his words very carefully but acknowldeged Melbourne's players were ripped off under the ruling. Of course no-one wants to talk about the fact Jarryd "milkman" Hayne was awarded a Dally M when his team was in serious breach of the cap. Not a good look for the game , but then they swept Andrew Johns' cocaine addiction under the rug and immortalised him.

Must be a NSW thing wink

A classic

Pure Gold !!

Very keen for this game. I want the Storm to win for sentimental value as Cronk (and probably Slater) can end their careers on a high note.

But I like the Cowboys too and have always thought they were a good team (though I go for Dragons) so I'm equally happy to see them win too.

Cronk and Slater have so many defining moments that they won't die if they lose next week. The Cowboys winning from 8th would be pretty bloody special though.

It irks me too mate..right from the moment they drove Alex's head into the ground all Smith did was carry on and on and on that it shouldnt have been a a penalty, whilst Alex was laying paralyzed on the ground....any fool could see how bad it was and how much distress he was in....

Guess you are right but I just think it would wrap up their great footy careers very nicely.

As I said, I'm equally happy for Cowboys to win.

Don't think I've had a grand final where I haven't backed one particular team, except maybe 2015. But if I had to pick one it would be Storm simply because I think they will win. Would be amazing to see an upset from 8th place though as you say CF.

They are going to have to play better than they did against the Broncos to win to be honest. Several teams waited until the finals to play their worst football this year and Storm are one of them. They are just luck y the Broncos did the same. Cronulla and the Roosters are the other two that come to mind .

Agreed, but I think they will perform, they seem to do well when it matters. Based on all 4 teams performances this week, I reckon Cowboys could've won against any of them. They played the best out of any team I reckon.

...and Slater is right to be wary.

https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/sport/n...924-gynpgw.html

The Cowboys lead the league for completions (80 per cent) as well as forcing more drop outs (56) and enjoying more tackles inside the opposition 20 metres zone (954) than any other side this year, according to Fox Sports Stats .

Easy fixed. JT played 5/8 in origin until Lockyer moved in from fullback, then went in to halfback. When Locky retired in 2012 moved back out to 5/8 so Cooper Cronk could play halfback.
Michael Morgan always played 5/8 until JT got injured in June, then moved into halfback,- so both of them can play either.
Me, I'd leave him at half and move JT out to 5/8.

The Cowboys head honcho's were in a bit of a quandry in the last few years wondering what to do when JT retires.
Enter michael Morgan,-(2017 version),- now I think their worries have eased.
JT will have had 8 months for the shoulder to recover from the surgery when trials begin, so Paul Green should feel pretty good about 2018 unless someone gets badly busted on sunday.

I'm sure Greenie will feel better with too many halves rather than not enough.
Hopefully Martin is secured on a multi year contract. He's a very skilled young fella.

These days 5/8 and HB are interchangeable now, as most now play on either side of the field. One may stay more on side of the field, as does his partner, but if the move around field altogether, then it makes no different what each number has.

Beforehand, the HB mainly feed the scrums and did the kicks in play, and the 5/8 was the orchestrator of the attack, got into the ref's face and generally ran the ball into the attack.

Hopefully Martin is secured on a multi year contract. He's a very skilled young fella.

No shortage of halves talent at the cowboys now....Young Tully Tigers local junior Jake Clifford picked up Holden Cup player of the year so hopefully he will get a run in the top grade next year though he may have to wait his turn..

I totally expected Green to get coach of the year but I'm cool with Bellyache getting it.

Smith for Daly M was a no-brainer. He was brilliant this year and imo is one of the best players to ever play the game. Such a smart footballer.

Cameron Smith deserves every one of those awards,- but Paul Green should have got the Coach award.
Craig Bellamey didn't really do anything different than in previous years,- just kept the machine in tune.
And the Raiders Nick Cotric winning Rookie of the Year was well deserved. Barring injury, that kid is going a long way.

I'm not sure having to do something different as a coach is a criteria but would have been happy to see Green win also.

One sleep to go.
Being semi realistic, I sort of expect Storm to win,- but either way I hope it doesn't end up a cricket score with the Cowboys on the wrong end.
If they go down giving it all they've got, it's not a bad effort from (just) scraping into eighth place.

Only a fool would be writing them out of the game. Like you I am hoping for a tight contest and a win either way is a win for myself.

The Storm to shove it up the NRL and the Cowboys coming from 8th place.

If the Cowboys play the way the have and the past few weeks and limit the amount of mistakes they make then they will give it a good crack!

I haven't checked today how ticket sales are going.
2 days ago they were still well down, with no Sydney team in the GF.
In fact the NRL were giving away plenty of free tickets to junior rugby leagues clubs, knowing full well that for the kids to go they have to drag the adults along, who (of course) pay full freight + buy food and drinks etc. Sly pr!cks !

Haven't been to a GF live since 2013, but this could be cracker, but no chance of getting down there tomorrow. (+ I am no longer a Knights member, so have to get tickets the same way as everyone else)
Although expecting the Storm machine to win, the Cowboys could still cause one of the biggest upsets in history if they do it.
No team outside of the Top 4 has won the comp since the NRL inception in 1998.

And the airlines being the ar$eholes they are, more than tripled the airfares from TSV - SYD to over $1000 going straight for the jugular and gouge the poor punters instead of putting on more aircraft.
Aircraft go U/S all the time and there's always a backup.
This has a big flow-on effect in ticket sales to the game and for business's like, hotels/motels, pubs/bars, restaurants, taxi cabs and rental cars etc.
But the airlines have gouged their quid, so stuff everyone else.

i checked flights from tsv to syd on thursday, was still one way flights for $300. not too bad considering its a long weekend and school holidays. im trying to book flighs to sydney in march at present, and cheapest is $190 one way.

in regards to the game, yesterdays AFL results show you dont have to be the best team through the year to win on the day. as much as i would like to see the cows win, hard to go past the storm and the quality of their players and game. storm by 14 after a close first half.

Gee whiz, that PNG team was a bit overawed I think - they sure turned it on in the last 10mins but the game was gone by then.

Also a step up in class when playing against an opposition with only 1 player without some reasonable NRL experience in their side.
Be good experience for them and have a few NRL clubs look at a couple of them.

It also illustrated the prodigious young talent on display under Gus's watch..Penrith are doing amazing things out there..

Who is this joker entertaining 10 yr old teenyboppers anyway and why did Todd Greenberg let his wife and daughter choose the pre game entertainment....?

True CF but 18 in front now and I reckon Cowboys are lacking the momentum and power of last week.

I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't get any tries.

Would be great to see them win from 8th but their chances are diminishing.

I'm stoked they won as it further shoves it up Gallop (and the resident troll) but torn for the Cowboys. Love 'em both so it's crazy watching them play off in the GF.

The Cowboys can hold their heads up high. They weren't supposed to make it .

LOL you're not wrong! Always sucks when there's a clear winner early in the game. 2015 GF was very exciting because you didn't know who was going to win until the last minutes of the game.

The Cowboys scored the first try in the second half so it probably wasn't until Melbourne scored again that it became obvious who would win.

I enjoyed the game. I feel for the lads up north but am disappointed that Green has come out and had a whinge this morning. They were beaten by a much better team on the night .

Agree, can’t understand his whinge tbh, thought the refereeing was pretty good and the Cows won the penalty count. That try where Cecchin obstructed the Cows player was a 50/50 call (despite the idiots in the commentary box, if a referee obstructs the game it’s supposed to be a scrum with feed to team in possession). But the Ref didn’t miss all those tackles. The injury that hurt them was caused by their own player.

I read a great analysis on a blog somewhere a couple of days ago where the poster said he felt the Cowboys played their GF last week and it would weigh heavy on them in the game last night.

Tbh I don't know why there's a Melbourne team in the NRL. They simply don't care for rugby league (or union) down there. I wonder how many of their supporters are expats from north of the Murray? How many who have played for them since their inception come from AFL states? None I'm guessing. The team is an artificial transplant and imo will never gain anything like the following from locals that the AFL now has in Sydney and Brisbane. How much money have the NRL and Newscorp invested in the Storm? Seems like a waste to me. Yes they've been successful but who in Melbourne really cares? Unlike the AFL, the NRL has not been successful in expanding the game beyond it's traditional strongholds of QLD and NSW. The Adelaide and Perth teams folded after only a few seasons. How many play rugby league in AFL states at grassroots level, and how many genuine local, native supporters of the game are there in Victoria and other AFL strongholds? I think the NRL should admit defeat, pack its' bags and retreat north of the Murray and concentrate on building the game in its' traditional strongholds (to try and counter the growing popularity of aussie rules there, if nothing else).

This is not sour grapes over the Storm's win last night, even though I was hoping for a Cowboy's win. Tbh I don't follow the NRL (or AFL) much. I just wonder why so much time, effort and money have been spent trying to establish the game in a part of the country that has little or no interest in it.

Average crowd attendance is in the top 5 teams.

The biggest ever NRL crowd was the 1999 grand final between Melbourne and St George (107,999) .Of the 20 biggest ever crowds ever recorded in NRL history Melbourne participated in 7 of them.

It shows .

Here's the start of 2017 and the number of games played. Maybe the NRL should drop all those NSW teams underneath them due to lack of support on your logic.

In the Storms early days i believed the money being spent on the club was over the top, still to this day believe the 99 premiership was bought. but now the Storm is ingrained into the NRL with a steady supporter base and as the 2017 crowd averages show do a lot better than most Sydney based teams. having said that, Victorians are well known for getting out and supporting their teams at the ground and not in front of the tele.
will be interesting to watch the crowds at storm games once the current crop of players start retiring.

The AFL have a similar history of throwing big money at clubs to start up. No-one seems to mind now though.

The AFL did with GWS what the NRL did with Storm. Push further into enemy (code) heartland .

Very good points, rugby league will never gain a stronghold in Melbourne at junior or grass roots level.
By contrast, one of my son's school mates from ASC Maitland is playing for the Sydney Swans now.
Yeah and I remember the failed ventures in Perth and Adelaide as well, in fact spent some time in Perth in the 90s, and they both got no support at local level or from the local media.

I had a holiday in WA 10 years ago during footy finals time. The sport section of the Perth newspaper had only a small article on the NRL, just a few paragraphs iirc.

Rugby league scrums are a joke these days. Once upon a time you had to feed the ball in straight down the middle, (or else get penalised) where opposing players would use their feet to try to drag the ball through to their side. Nowadays the team with the ball feeds it directly into their half of the scrum and it rolls uncontested straight through the players legs to be collected by another team member. The other team has no chance of getting the ball, so why bother? Why has it changed?

Back in the good old days when scrums were contested, they would often collapse, leaving the hookers particularly vulnerable to neck and spinal injury....Now they only exist because it creates a different attacking/defensive option because 6 players from each side are congregated in one area of the field..however the forwards now break so early that the defensive line is only diminished for a few seconds really...

It does look really stupid though in such a tough contest to have this one area that is not contested at all..either bring back the contested scrum or do away with it altogether I reckon....and how about the play the balls these days..?..what a absolute shambles that has become..!

Won't happen I am told. I have wanted to see them gone for years but they allow players on both sides to get a rest. Take the tap and get on with it, but even that has become an inconsistent joke.

Now that Sportsbet are heavily it is even less likely as it extends the game duration. Longer game, more gambling. The video ref helps too.
