We had a ripper of a storm out here at Lightning Ridge earlier this evening (about 6.30pm). The type where the rain was so heavy that brown, muddy streams of water were gushing down the streets as the drains couldn't cope. And the dark clouds coming in from the west were pretty amazing as well. There was a long line moving across the region, and looking at storm tracker it seemed as though the storms were moving in a rotational direction rather than a straight line, almost like there was a low pressure system just to the southeast (I didn't catch up with the Synoptics).

Also coming back from Dubbo this afternoon I could see quite a few nasty looking storms off in various directions, particularly between Gilgandra and Coonamble, and there were a few sections of heavy rain. Then there was a very well defined edge to the dark clouds between Coonamble and Walgett, and almost instantly it was sunshine then everywhere to the north (must have been a type of dry line). Of course it then came in very dark as the evening line of storms moved through!

I noticed that feature too last night and was wondering about it - kinda looked like an upper level low out towards Dubbo. Nullschool does show some rotatey-bits inland at 500HPa on the 17:00 and 20:00 obs smile

I think the weather forecast needs updating for Sydney Metro with the medium rain coming down at the moment.

20mm rain in the last 24 hours to 9am, not bad, and temps moderate.
Looks like it has set in for today as well.

Forecast has been updated, but is basically unchanged. The BOM must be expecting dry, sunny spells otherwise there's no way it can make the forecast maxima.

In all the models now, the ECL hangs about in the Tasman for about a week, but too far away from the coast to bring much rain. SE winds continue along the coast for the whole week, bringing continued mild, cloudy, showery weather to coastal areas, but only modest totals (a couple of mm per day).

I get the feeling the rainfall was not evenly distributed and uniform either in this area.
Driving from home in the arvo, to East Maitland shopping centre at Greenhills , and past the old weather site at the Maitland Vistors Centre, the rainfall was substantially heavier there than at home.
This is one of the problems with moving weather stations to airports several Ks out of town.

I had 7mm last night, at least it was something but it will all be gone tomorrow. The hills around here were shrouded in cloud this morning, almost like Blue Mts weather. It has been fine in the south west but the cloud is a bit slow to clear from here. Sounds like it is back to dry weather again now. They say 80% of QLD is in drought, looks like the wet season failed again, so I shouldn't complain.
The ABC is reporting a good vintage season in Canberra, though they always say that. No-one ever admits to a bad vintage.

Yeah those places like Beresfield, Thorton, Kurri and other towns close by were under a stationary cell for some time and I see Maitland (Belmore Bridge) had 62mm while Maitland airport had 18mm.

Not as much rain here, recorded 7.8mm in the 24 hours to 9am and probably had 2 or 3 more mls since. Looks to be getting somewhat brighter outside, it would be nice to see some sun now!!

Rainfall totals were variable across Sydney too. Typically one or two mm in the outer West, 5 to 10mm in most other areas with 10-15 on the North Shore, parts of the 'mid Western' suburbs and near Sutherland. There was an isolated high fall of 28mm at West Pennant Hills.

Sun's been out here for a few minutes, although it's still pretty cloudy. Winds over Sydney and in Coastal parts North of about Jervis Bay are Westerly.

Thanks for the info.
I'd say we got less than Belmore Bridge here, but more than the airport. (on the verge of Oakhampton where I am).
Lochinvar can also be somewhat of a rainbelt spot, which is near the ariport, but not yesterday.

33mm in the bucket this morning from yesterday's storms. Wasn't expecting to get more than some coastal stations!

Nice drop dm! I had 40mm, roughly a km or so south of you, so the intensity was quite variable over small distances. 'Twas a beautiful hour or so of moderate to heavy rain after such an extended very dry run! It was raining quite heavily in the CBD and is suspect the city got a nice soaking generally, while drying off appreciably to the south (Orange AP 5mm). Prior to that I drove home from Dubbo in the late arvo (which had zilch) and encountered quite a wide storm front as we went through Molong. Very heavy rainfall and the highway awash at the lower end of town.

Update: Molong PO: 48mm. (BoM)

Breezy here and a bit showery at times. It's fully cloudy. We really do not need any more rain as the lawn is just a big pool of water.

It's solid overcast here after a couple of sunny breaks mid morning. It's started raining again in Sydney, that persistent, annoying light rain that delivers 2 mm in 6 hours. Looks like this rubbish will stick around for the afternoon, probably most of the week.

EDIT: Did those Russian's hack the BOM's computers again? Daily observations don't seem to have been updatd for any station since Thursday morning.
