A persistent offshore trough, supported by long fetch North East to South East winds, herald a wet end to Summer and start of Autumn on the NSW coast. Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong are forecast to receive about 40-100mm in the period Feb 26 to March 4. Katoomba is forecast to receive up to 70mm during that period, Singleton up to 40mm.

There doesn't look to be much rain for the locations West of the Divide, but storms are a distinct possibility every day over the next week or so, as has happened yesterday and today. This will be especially so if supported by an inland trough. Other posters may wish to comment on the storm potential.

Note 1. The end date is a bit uncertain. It may continue into the week after next.
Note 2. This thread has started a bit late. For rain and storms on the 24th and 25th in Sydney and the Central Tablelands, and a particularly cool February day in Sydney on the 25th, refer to the day to day thread.

Newcastle just copped 19mms in a heavy shower but they are only right on the coastal fringe so far

Very good thread start Steve.
This one has plenty of potential. The downside is the slight downgrade in the forecast this afternoon for tomorrow's rainfall totals, but as we all know, they've been wrong once or twice in recent memory.

As I said earlier, let's just see how it plays out.

This afternoon, I surprisingly saw some blue sky and a brief glimpse of sunshine. Something I didn't think possible after a day of heavy grey skies and intermittent drizzle, especially considering that conditions were forecast to be becoming more consistently wet.

Thank you Homer.

---------

When I was out around 6:30, the rain here had stopped and I also caught a few glimpses of blue sky. Chatswood has had 6mm of rain since 9:00AM, drip, drip, drip.

There are heavy showers moving over Newcastle now. That trough took ages to get that far North. There's also a yellow-orange cell moving up the coast South of Kiama. Neither seem to have any lightning in them.

------

Sydney had its coldest February day in 13 years according to the Channel 9 weather report, but if the wind shifts SE (off 23-24 degree water) that won't survive until 9:00AM.

Finally appears to be some heavier showers approaching from the south.
Hopefully, they penetrate a bit further inland that what today's mizzle has.

Here's hoping Homer.

Today's mizzle didn't even last the distance. Had I not been in the car driving and seeing it on the glass windscreen I probably wouldn't have known it even drizzled.

The forecast of rain seemed to have left much to be desired when it came to actual delivery. Oh well.

About 45 mins ago had our first sign of rain (the pavement was wet, though just barely). Fingers crossed those showers last the distance.

I note Kiama had 11.8 mm in half an hour from that shower so here's hoping.

Strewth, heavy rain falling at the moment and I'm heading to the Gong!! Here's hoping it stops by 2am or it's going to be a wet walk back to the train station. It's coming down quite nicely which is good, but at a most inconvenient time.

That's a fair bit of rain for Kiama PS, seems that the rain rate is about the same here. We will probably get to about the 10mm mark in 1/2 hour if this continues, maybe a bit less here.

Torrential rain here now. Any other night I'd be cheering.

Oh mate, I recall those nights of going out when the rain has been torrential. Some of my best nights though.

Then again I also recall of nights whereby I got changed outside the club on the bus seat because I get hot easily (i.e. shorts ready to go underneath my denim jeans during the cooler months). blush poke

Send it up this way, I'd be in heaven with a heavy downpour. Still no sign of the wet stuff falling from the sky. Fingers and toes crossed, though!

Hahahaha nice story Perfect Storm. I'd be happy to send it up your way. Looks like it's more or less heading towards you anyway!! Edit- actually it's really not heading very far inland, hardly even getting onto the escarpment in this area so it might actually be touch and go for your place.

Thanks Max.
I haven't been keeping an eye on all things weather because I have other stuff I'm reading but a SWW is pretty serious stuff.
Thanks for the update.
I would have missed it otherwise.

BTW,

The northern most part of that rain band (red core) is heading towards us but I just can't see it making it this far inland at that intensity. Would be happy to be proven wrong though!!

No worries my friend, I hope Reilly sees it too. I've not long gotten back by train from Kiama, and it's been raining steadily/heavily all the way from Wollongong to Waterfall.

Cheers.

We've had nothing for hours except a little bit of drizzle and fog.
I'm keeping a keen eye on the incoming. I just hope it lasts!!
It's looking good so far but everything today has dried as it ventured inland.

Raining quite steadily here at Kingsgrove, nothing over the top yet though.
