Radar only picks up precipitation, not cloud.

The current satellite image doesn't currently show any clouds that would be dropping rainfall.

so a cloud could have lots of moisture in it but unless the droplets are big enough to fall it wont be picked up. Is it the size of the droplets or the motion. thank you

If droplets become big enough to fall as rain, they'll usually reflect enough radar energy back to the radar for it pick them up as long as the drops fall through the heights at which the radar beam passes through.

Motion of precipitation and other particles is only relevant when it comes to doppler wind imagery.

Just a big reminder, as this is the last day of 2016 it is time to start the new SE Qld / NE NSW day to day weather.

I was wondering as a suggestion that we close this one down and have it archived, then just above it have the new .....

SE Qld / NE NSW day to day weather for 2017

Then as the years fly past we can look back at the exact year we want to look at.
If the event started in Dec 2016 we just paste the ubbthreads.php address as a datum point in time and continue or re-post relevant points to the new thread.

Anyone can start if you like but just need the Mods such as Seabreeze to position it above this thread.

Just a suggestion or if anyone has other ideas it would be great. I just think it will be easier. The last 3 years have gone so fast that events have become a collage. This thread is almost 12 years old and Seabreeze has done a bit of a chronicle for us but it is still hard to pin point an event as time has morphed into a blob of events. Time to split it into years.

Cheers everyone. It was great chatting and discussing events with you all. Look forward to more action in 2017.

^^ Excellent idea, Colin. I second the motion to have a new day to day weather thread for 2017.

Yeah I got the idea approved back in May when you initially mentioned it. I should have the 2017 day to day thread created within the next half hour or so.
I won't lock this thread so posts from this thread can still be quoted easily in other threads.

That is perfect Seabreeze, will bookmark that post for future reference smile

On another note, it has been 36 for the last couple hours here, thankfully not humid however.

A few final thoughts on an interesting 2016. We started the year on a record El-Nino. I'm not sure we'll ever see such warm and dry conditions persist throughout autumn and winter. I just kept waiting for it to end and it never did. It reached high 20s numerous times in winter and this dulled the transition to spring. I really enjoyed it.

Not really any major rain events to talk about. Storm season was pretty pathetic early in the year. We did have that run of days with 3000-4000+ CAPE, but predictably with the lack of shear nothing much came of it except on the last evening with some nice offshore storms. Big winter falls across central and eastern Aus but skirted SEQ.

2016-2017 storm season started late but has been great so far. Impressively severe and photogenic storms with a great 2-week outbreak in December. Unfortunately instead of a big wet replacing storms it might be a big dry, but here's hoping for an exciting start to 2017.

Nice work Seabreeze - bit of time put into that, Good Stuff, makes light work for others who wish to investigate cool

Totally enjoyed your time lapse vid collection Joesk - didnt get anything here on the goldy except one brief half hearted effort by the weather gods back in Dec if memory serves.
Seeing your captured storm forms ect was quite quenching - id be happy with that grin
