start of another month, February was a massive failure, but March will be off to an ok start locally, a trough system will reach us thursday into friday enchancing rainfall and storms. Bom forecasting around 100mm at this point. but as we all know, we dont count it until its in the gauge.

forecasts still holding up well from thursday night onwards. just hoping the flow is onshore enough to actually hit us instead of sweeping by 10km offshore.

Latest ENSO Outlook. This is just great news as we head into March.. frown

Likelihood of 2017 El Nino now close enough to 50/50. Makes me wonder if it actually shifted into La Nina.

Deffo looking good up this way. Hoping to grab a nice 100mm or so. Be good. Got under half febs average. Maybe march will be like last year.

Looking at www.windytv.com GFS rain forcast most seems to be offshore.

I do take these model forecasts with a grain of salt and I bet it will change as it gets closer to the event.

Nil rain recorded. Still way too hot to work in my shed before 7.30pm without drowning in sweat.

Ants have been building walls in my lawn and we have had a couple of invasions into the house but none of them are wearing floaties so it won't be too much rain if any. Yard full of knobies (small lizards) a couple more snake sightings (another carpet and a common tree snake so that's 4 in 2 weeks). There is a lack of green tree frogs and even my resident cane is looking decidedly sick.

I'm getting as toey as a roman sandal about a cyclone. 6 years since Yasi and nada.

as usual, mother nature toying with us. booming thunder come from the cells to our west, very lightning active. of course the upper flow is easterly so they are going further inland.

Seems all the activity is inland today. Maybe tonight we will get more coastal activity as seems to happen. Alot of times the rain forms at night even though BOM constantly has either rain in morning anf arvo or they say less likely in the evening. If you see those you know it will rain at night lol

also febs stats
Max: 34.4
Min: 23.7
Rain: 224.5mm over 20 days.

On the satellite imagery the higher clouds are moving in a different direction than the lower clouds I think that is called wind shear.

Suns out here. 24.3mm which is surprising considering how torrential the rain got. I expected over 50mm. Then again the creek only rose like half a foot so is consistent with what we got. Gfs forecasts a weekly total of 25mm for me. So unless we get nothing else, I think that latest run is alittle off lol.

well notch that up as another failed event, about 10th for the season?

could have/should have received 100mm over a few days from a decent coral sea trough like that. i ended up with 15mm, some suburbs better with 25-35mm but overall another fizzer. story of our season.

must be dry air coming from somewhere, we just cant win a trick. every day the storms form in the spot and the flow is wrong, or the showers are just off shore or today it all just dries up. every day the rain is out there, but not want to get to us.

Man this is bloody frustrating. Buildup all day and nothing. So as the wife is in Brizveags until Thursday I have been doing things around the house to make it rain, 2 cars washed, sheets and towels washed and left out over night, I left 2 sheets of chipboard on a couple of chairs and not a damn thing. I give up. I might have to find another mankini and start doing rain dances at night.

Yea maybe they should change the Townsville weather forecast from % chance of rain to "God knows"

Thursday is the next day to watch. Apparently tsv potentially could see more then up here but that all depends where the local heavy falls end up.

May even see some shower/storm activity if we are lucky later today, or this evening. Wed/Thurs seem to be the focus, with a mid level trough moving in from the North and an upper level trough approaching from the South.

Yeah gfs has between 100 and 150mm. If the locally heavy falls comes true then maybe some areas might see that or above.

What's out chances of a storm today. Will it really be only inland places like bom says. When I ask for our chances I don't mean just tsv. I mean up this way too.

I've said it before. This radar seriously overestimates the rain that is actually falling. It's been constant very light rain. Nothing anywhere near moderate like the radar is showing.

i think the radar has been out of whack for a few weeks since it went offline for two days. keeps showing echos over burdekin that are never there too.

again, another big failure tonight, rain to the north, rain to the south, nothing in between.

It poured in Mundingburra lastnight for a good half hour or so - could hear it hammering on my roof. Disappointed to hear that it wasn't more widespread because it seemed like a good old-fashioned torrential downpour. I wonder when we'll see one of those weeks where the rain doesn't seem to let up at all for a week or more. I miss those events.

I was under the impression that the intensity on the radar is based on rain drop size. Which was the case last night. The rain rate was not moderate but the drops where the size consistent with what one would expect in a moderate shower.

24mm for me up here from a nice 2am downpour.

I was starting to get a little despondent with the lack of rain. We were seeing it fall all around us but none in the town itself other than a mm or two here and there.

With the dry season on our doorstep, the lack of any reasonable wet season is going to make the year ahead very difficult for the people on the land. Not much has fallen out west of us at all.

I can remember when Toowoomba was having big issues with water supply not so long ago, and it would be on every second news bulletin. Now there is a bigger city with as bad, if not worse, water issues and we hear nothing, not even a murmur outside of the local rag. If you want to know how important NQ is to the south, this speaks volumes.

Some people got between 20-40mm. So again forecast was accurate. Considering WATL only forecast 5-10mm yesterday for Townsville and surrounds, 7mm is within that estimate and others who had over 20 are even luckier.

had a quick fire downpour an hour ago, another 15mm. sadly the big storm to our SW died, would have had 30-40mm in it if it hit the city.

ended up with 37.8mm from the rain yesterday arvo, better than I thought but not as good as I hoped.

sadly models are sticking with an ECL on the qld/nsw border while the MT remains well north. we of course will be in the middle with nothing.

An ECL at this time of year. Talk about rubbing salt in a wound. There normally winter systems but nop thos year they invade our cyclone season.

Bloody weather stealing southern Queenslanders. Not only do we not have a cyclone for the last 5 years but they start stirring up ECL's 2 months early. Mongrels. I blame the Greens. (Now watch as some idiot reporter starts trying to tell people that ECLs are worse than cyclones and much stronger than any other weather event, again).

Nil rain last 24 hours. Wife firmly believes we should not be using aircons now as its Autumn, she is wrong, again.

Lol blood pressure is fine as I'm doing cardiac rehab at the moment. Oh yeah and 2 ECGs every time I go to a session.

So we just booked and paid a deposit for a cruise to NZ in October so that will probably mean Townsville will get a cyclone between the date we leave and when we get home again. Nah just joking.

Pretty good time of year to cruise. I went last year in late August (first ever cruise for my 40th), had a ball. Planning to do another one next year. smile

Min March record was broken overnight. 27.9c eclipsing the old record of 27.4c on march 19 1990.

Must have been warm last night - wife had the aircon on again.
No rain but there was a couple of spots on the windscreen going to Pimlico about 7.30am. Nothing much in it though.

Our best friends who live in Oakey booked a couple of weeks ago and we decided to go on the cruise as well. The last time I did a cruise(?) was returning from PNG on the Malaysia which was just a small freighter with passenger accommodation.

I thought in Townsville you turn aircon on in late August and then leave it on 24/7 until early June the following year smile

I wonder if next year or the year after Townsville will have a wetter or very wet year . Dry year pattern has to break eventually. Maybe a flood ?

SBT. ECL are stronger then any other weather event *troll face* but seriously wtf. An ECL in march is fecked. I really hope we get a late season drenching soon. That being said I was shocked to see black river still flowing and not just a trickle. Its not a bad flow to it.

Showers and small storms are forming. Looks like a nw flow. Might see some wide spread falls up here later but doubt it.

Not much of a feed at this stage. The cells are forming and dropping on the spot. Maybe we might see some movement shortly.

Hi guys, I've just joined the forum. I found it while searching on Hell's Gate Dam. Anyone know of an informative site on that? I'm particularly interested on capacity: I recall that it will hold multiples of the Burdekin Falls Dam.

But on the topic, I'm in Townsville, I have dead trees and no grass and there is little prospect that our water restrictions will be lifted this year. I am getting the yard landscaped with a lot of paving and gravel. :sigh:

The 2nd stage of the Burdekin dam will hold more than the proposed Hell's Gate dam and a lot cheaper to build, but it will be up to Sunwater which gets built first as they have to have enough allocation for the water usage to be viable because they are first and foremost agriculture projects......quote
https://gulftodarling.com/2013/02/14/the...resource-water/
"Two storage facilities east of the Divide have been the subject of continuing assessment over the years.

The Burdekin Dam spans Australias third largest river and stores 1.86 million ML with an annual flow of approx. 10 million ML. Proposals for a stage two increase in storage capacity to 8.5 million ML and the introduction of a 37MW hydro-power facility below the dam wall (generating sufficient power for 9,500 homes annually) are subject to assessment.

Upstream from the Burdekin Dam is a proposal for the Hells Gate Dam 100m wide in a deep narrow gorge capable of storing 5.72million ML and also having optional hydro-power facilities."

It also should be noted that the Hell's Gate dam will take a lot longer to build than the Burdekin upgrade and could be well over 10 years to see water from it if was started right now so don't expect it to be Townsville's saving grace just yet.

Also Hanrahan this is a quote from the Hells Gate Dam Feasibility Study Overview as to how long the study will take.
"Townsville Enterprise is currently finalising funding arrangements with the State and Federal Governments. This process should be complete in late January 2017. In recognition of the level of public interest and expectation, and importance of the timely delivery of the Hells Gate Dam Feasibility Study for government decision making processes, Townsville Enterprise is commencing the EOI phase of the consultancy procurement process prior to funding being available. This will allow the procurement process to proceed with the appointment of the successful consultancy firm anticipated in March 2017.
Once started, the study will take approximately 12 months to complete."

Radar would have you believe that it is pissing down here in Wulguru too but it ain't. Weather radar is an imprecise science.

I'm an old radar tech [both me and the radar] and I assure you it is much easier to find a solid object than the density of rain. Besides, BOM radar is a min. of 14 min out of date.

19mm at my place, 2km south had more than double that, 2km north had double that. 6km away had 6 times that. so frustrating!

Backyard flooded from this rain.
Bolt of lightning hit the house.
Who says nothing exciting happens in Kelso...lol
Got a shock from the kitchen tap I was using at the time and fried a few electrics and destroyed my phone line.

Brought myself a lotto ticket

showers forming to our north thru the palm group, storms near the towers and new cells forming between mingela and woodstock, hopefully a sign of another unstable morning ahead.

Wow, you were very, very lucky .... glad you're OK.

Please make sure you get all your electrics checked over by a qualified electrical contractor. Wiring can be partially damaged and you may think it's working OK, but it's not.

Hope you've also got an earth stake on your home and surge protection in your switchboard. This will stop your electrics from being fried. If you already haven't already, make these 2 things a priority, would save much heartache and maybe lives in the future.

Good luck, keep safe .....

1mm added over night from a all to quick shower so 66mm recorded yesterday. Yes my yard was flooded as well, Gutters overflowing on the roof and every thing is a mud pit of a front yard from cars being parked on the grass. Bloody grass is laughing at me and the seed heads are already knee high. Bugger going to have to mow on Monday if the ground dries out enough.

massive activity to the south, east and west, and of course the flow is northerly now and there is nothing to the north.
driving me batty, when we have a westerly, no storms form to the west. when we have a southerly, no storms form to the south. no its northerly there is activity everywhere else. cant win.

17mm here from that line of showers moving thru the burbs. very happy with that but saddened that the rain to our NW seems to be dying as it moves over us, except at yabulu were it seems to be pouring once more!

Good tally SBT. Been a while since a nice 24hours like that.

The Old Man lives down near Willows and said he had a couple of inches. No rain gauge but he said the water only runs on to his patio when he gets about that.

Only 9.5mm all up for me. It was Wezza's lucky day yesterday, and looking at the current feed it might be his again today.

It was that final burst that delivered the goods for us yesterday, before that I thought we'd end up with 10mm max. Radar looking promising again today also.

32mm in the past 24 hours for me. been a good weekend, but with a bit of luck our way could have been widespread 50-100 falls over the burbs, just never seems to go our way. today is another case in point, showers/storms everywhere, except where we need it.

Had 29.5mm in the rain gauge when we woke up this morning and then an extra 7mm during the morning shower from the teensiest rain clouds, making a total of 35.5mm. Pretty good, but the humidity sucks .... went to bed last night and it was 84 and woke up this morning to find it at 86. I get in the shower (cool for 5 seconds, then warm) and by the time I have walked the 15 mtrs to my bedroom to dress in the morning, even though I leave the air-con on, I need another one! Bloody awful time of year - AND IT'S MARCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Showers on and off last night but only 4mm in the Nylex this morning. The last weeks events just show how hit and miss rainfall is in Townsville. So that makes 92mm in less than a week.

How can two people watch the same video and come away with two totally different conclusions..
Asked my husband to watch the Chasers video last night on prospect of the COral sea cyclone and give me a rundown .. He came back with yeah just another washout.. Had insomnia later decided to watch it myself... what I come away with is nearly every model says there will be a cyclone crossing some time next week and sounds like Nitso is keen .,

Anyone else watch it and have a different take ? Wondering if I go to the supermarket for my weekly shop if there will no bread and milk in store by 10am this morning !

Latest 12Z model runs all coming into line ( except GFS does not want a bar of it ) for a large ( and intense ) cyclone crossing coast around Monday 27th. At the 144hr mark with consistent runs starts to become more of interest models still looking at crossings btw Ingham - Rocky area but all major models ( except GFS ) agree on approx. time and for a coastal crossing.

Very populated along most of that coastline will need to pay attention next 24hrs and couple of model runs will start refining threat areas.

Watch by the weekend.

16mm overnight. The total is building but not of any great significance.

With this pre-cyclone (if it gets here) rain it was almost saturated the water table so there will be plenty of trees falling over if we get a decent blow.

Cyclone prep started at 7.30am - cyclone prep finished at 7.40am Just need to get 20 litres of ULP for the generator and we are all set.

as good as that forecast is, my concern is the models are trending south this evening. still highly likely this system will go south of us.

Yup.

I'm relieved that at this stage, Bilyana is out of the firing line - but Townsville is certainly still at risk.

My gut tells me Bowen will be in the bullseye though.

The models may have it heading South but I notice that The Chasers still have Townsville to Cardwell as their Chase Zone
I don't want it hitting Ingham and Cardwell have had their share ..but I still want some of that rain

I plan to drag out a few old smart phones I have and charge them up, just in case.

The Low (more than likely named in the next update) has slowed it's movement overnight, and should turn toward the WSW today.

Townsville is still very much at risk.

Will be watching with interest, next few days are going to be a tense waiting game for many. We did most of our prep yesterday - cleaned up, supplied up, fueled up and tested the gennies. Its so quiet and still this morning and its good the dump has free day today - hopefully a good chance for people to do some clean up if they need. I wonder when we will see the first bands coming through, maybe tomorrow sometime

Meh if it crosses as far south as Bowen it won't have very much effect on us. Maybe some heavy showers and a love puff of wind or two.

Don't get too excited, this thing will still have a few wobbles up its sleeve before now and crossing. May come down to how the blocking underneath interacts with it. Early days.

I like to see a bit of meteorological action as much as anyone but if I had the choice between a direct or near north crossing of a cat 3 and above or bugger all, I'd take bugger all ;-)

If it crosses at Ayr - Expect 100mm and Gales, possibly damaging wind gusts.

If it crosses at Giru - Expect Category 2 Winds and 100-200mm of rain.

Any further north than Giru and we are in the thick of it.

TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 6
Issued at 4:54 pm EST on Saturday 25 March 2017
Headline:
Tropical Cyclone Debbie has formed in the Coral Sea.

Areas Affected:
Warning Zone
Ayr to St Lawrence, including Bowen, Mackay and the Whitsunday Islands.

Watch Zone
Cairns to Ayr, including Cardwell and Townsville.

Cancelled Zone
Cape Tribulation to Cairns.

Details of Tropical Cyclone Debbie at 4:00 pm AEST:
Intensity: Category 1, sustained winds near the centre of 65 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 95 kilometres per hour.

Location: within 55 kilometres of 17.5 degrees South 151.8 degrees East, estimated to be 640 kilometres east of Cairns and 560 kilometres east northeast of Townsville.

Movement: slow moving.

Tropical Cyclone Debbie is currently a category 1 cyclone, but is continuing to show signs of development. The system has been relatively slow moving during today, but is expected to adopt a steady west-southwest track in the next few hours. This general west-southwesterly motion is expected to continue for the next few days, bringing the cyclone towards and eventually onto the north Queensland coast. Conditions are expected to favour the continued intensification of the cyclone as it approaches the coast over the weekend and into early next week.

Hazards:
Tropical Cyclone Debbie is expected to cross the coast between Townsville and Proserpine on Tuesday morning, most likely as a CATEGORY 4 tropical cyclone, with wind gusts up to 260 kilometres per hour near the centre.

DESTRUCTIVE winds are likely to develop about the Whitsunday Islands and nearby coast on Monday evening, and extend to other areas between Ayr and Mackay overnight into Monday morning.

GALES are expected to develop between Ayr and St Lawrence from late Monday afternoon and evening, and may extend to other coastal areas north to Innisfail during Tuesday.

Based on the current forecast track, abnormally high tides are expected to occur between at least Lucinda and Mackay as the cyclone approaches the coast. Large waves may also develop along the beachfront.

Areas of heavy rain are expected to develop about parts of the northern and central Queensland coast and adjacent inland areas into Sunday. A Flood Watch is current for coastal catchments between Cooktown and Mackay, extending inland to the eastern Gulf River catchmen

Hi all, long time since i've been on here, but with the impending cyclone threat thought I'd jump back on.

Pretty conflicted on what to do at the moment.
If it comes towards Townsville directly at anything more than a Cat 3, i'm planning on getting the family out of here.

If it moves south of Townsville and looks like crossing near or south of Bowen, i'll leave the family here and head to Mackay to help my mother prepare for the cyclone as she is home alone, and unable to prepare everything herself if they're in for a beating.

So, i'm really rather conflicted on what to do right now, and the models have such a wide variation it's making it hard to make the decision. Obviously I don't want to leave it too late to leave, but I also want to wait until models are more aligned to decide.

Any ideas?

If it crosses at Ayr, the current tracking map suggests Townsville would be inside the dark red "very destructive" wind zone, i.e. 170+ km/h.

Is this not what you'd expect?

Bugger my weather station doesn't have a record function just what's happening now so I guess I will have to stay up and watch it like a hawk or something. Maybe I will just point a web cam at it and go to bed? Nah I will stay up.

Will it or won't it? If we are in the Red Zone when it crosses it will be a tad worse than Yasi other wise it won't be as bad as a lot of people think.
Chainsaws x 2 new blades and fueled up and full of oil.
Generator ready to roll.
Lawns need mowing but meh they can wait.
Yard cleaned up. Gutters got a quick check. Hanging plants all down. Nothing left in the yard that I don't want blown away, anything else the neighbours can have.

Video walk around and photo shoot this arvo for the obligatory insurance before and after photos.

I could go out to Cleveland Bay in my mates 5metre center console and start doing donuts and try and suck it further north for you Chookie. wink

OK back to reality. The future son in law just finished a carbie overhaul of my generator, and then a quick tune up. Ran it for an hour with a small load on it and its going great guns. Got enough fuel for a couple of days. 3 trips around the yard and still finding small things to put away or put up against walls. Gutters and down pipes rechecked and re-cleaned.

My wife's photos have all been backed up on a couple of 2Tb hard drives (They just fit - Jesus she needs to do some serious culling). The usual documents passports etc in a waterproof case and everything that can be nailed down has been. Medicines and all other important stuff tucked away safely. Might do a drive around and take a few hundred photos for before and after photos after I do the house and yard. Not getting too excited yet but this time tomorrow? Who knows.

Laptops all charged and ready to go, mobile phones as well, cameras and sd cards all ready too.

OP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 14
Issued at 4:53 pm EST on Sunday 26 March 2017
Headline:
Tropical cyclone Debbie moving towards the coast, expected to intensify into a category 3 system this evening.

Areas Affected:
Warning Zone
Lucinda to St Lawrence including Townsville, Mackay, and the Whitsunday Islands.

Watch Zone
Innisfail to Lucinda including, extending inland to Charters Towers and Mount Coolon.

Cancelled Zone
Cairns to Lucinda.

Details of Tropical Cyclone Debbie at 4:00 pm AEST:
Intensity: Category 2, sustained winds near the centre of 110 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 155 kilometres per hour.

Location: within 30 kilometres of 18.4 degrees South 151.0 degrees East, estimated to be 450 kilometres east northeast of Townsville and 340 kilometres east northeast of Bowen.

Movement: southwest at 8 kilometres per hour.

Tropical cyclone Debbie has adopted a general west-southwest track towards the north Queensland coast and is currently forecast to intensify into a category 3 system this evening. Tropical cyclone Debbie is likely continue on a similar track and intensify further prior to making landfall between Rollingstone and Proserpine on Tuesday morning.

Hazards:
GALES are expected to develop about the exposed coast and islands between Ayr and Mackay during this evening, and could extend to remaining areas between Lucinda and St Lawrence during Monday. GALES could extend further north to coastal areas between Innisfail and Lucinda during Monday evening or Tuesday morning, as well as further inland to Charters Towers and Mount Coolon.

DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts over 125 km/h may develop about the exposed coast and islands between Ayr and Mackay during Monday morning, before extending further northwest to Lucinda by the evening.

The VERY DESTRUCTIVE CORE of Tropical Cyclone Debbie is currently expected to cross the coast between Rollingstone and Proserpine on Tuesday morning, most likely as a CATEGORY 4 tropical cyclone, with wind gusts up to 260 km/h near the centre.

Abnormally high tides are expected to occur south of Proserpine on the high tides on Monday. On Tuesday, residents between Rollingstone and Mackay are specifically warned of the dangerous storm tide as the cyclone crosses the coast. The sea is likely to rise steadily up to a level well above the normal tide, with damaging waves and flooding of some low-lying areas close to the shoreline as the cyclone approaches the coast on Tuesday. Large waves may also develop along the beachfront. People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to follow instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so by the authorities.

Areas of heavy rain with the potential to cause severe flash flooding are expected to develop about parts of the northern and central Queensland coast and adjacent inland areas late on Sunday and continue through Monday and Tuesday. Widespread daily rainfall totals of 200 mm, with isolated falls of 400 mm, is also likely to lead to major river flooding over a broad area next week, and a Flood Watch is current for coastal catchments between Cardwell and Gladstone, extending inland to the eastern Gulf River catchments.

Some schools in Townsville have already decided to close tomorrow:

I suspect there will be more.

Yeah looking more and more likely the cyclone will cross close to Bowen. If this is the case, Townsville will see bugger all wind and rain.

It may kick slightly more westerly once it hits a bit of land interaction. I think they are pretty confident at this stage, however Bowen is still going to cop a fair punch just by the shear size of the thing.

The ridge may strengthen underneath in the next few hours slowing the southern movement as well. Perhaps BOM is counting on this in their runs.

It still looks a bit dry in the center atm. Tonight should see some nice moisture intake thus ramping the old girl up.

Remember plan for the improbable.

Typically cyclones dip further south once land interaction takes effect. Simple physics explains this one....

It actually curved towards the SW before it crossed the coast and then West after that.

this is what the track map looked like morning before it arrived:

But the forecast tracks for Yasi, and Larry too were mostly on Townsville or close to Townsville. I remember Larry as I was due to give birth on the day he arrived so I moved to my sisters house in Douglas just in case I went into Labor to be close to the hospital. My memory of the last ten years of major cylones in Queensland have been that they fall between 50-150kms North of the favorable predicted track map. It could just be the yips but I am more unsettled than I was with Yasi approching the coast. I am just a novice and hope I am wrong. And pray this system does not reach potential before landfall on any part of this lovely coast.

My experience has been that the systems usually cross to the south of the expected forecast.

The most recent example was TC Dylan. It was predicted to hit Ayr direct on, and ended up crossing between Bowen and Proserpine.

Yes the further south it goes the less it will effect us wind and rain wise. Not saying it will be fine with some gentle breezes but anyone (like myself) that was hoping this could be a top up of Ross Dam is going to be sadly disappointed.

The schools have a duty of care which is reflected in a decision that came from the Regional Office and made in conjunction with Briz Vegas.

Also schools need to do some cyclone prep which can't be done with a zillion snot sausages and germ factories getting in the road. eg every computer in the school needs to be turned off and unplugged from the power point, multiply that by a couple of hundred computers across a school and that's a shed load of time. And some schools, say like the one I worked in, would loved to have a couple of blocks completely flattened so they could get some new buildings all paid for by the education dept.

No rainage recorded over night.

this is what the track map looked like morning before it arrived:

CRACKER RD! Everyone just take a breath and look at the scale here - Yasi was BIG!

Enjoy the unknown - be prepared and lets just see what happens. Keep the pics and wx descriptions coming for those of us stuck in sunny 35 deg still humid conditions to the north while you can.

And if we don't get much out of it the bogans will be lulled into a false sense of security and like the drongo a couple of house down from me. He hasn't bothered cleaning up his back yard of junk and when we do get a decent blow it will cause more damage because they don't believe it can happen to them.

I am more pissed off that the dam won't get a decent drink let alone anything else.

Yes I hate the fact that the dam is not going to get anything, I really thought we where in with a good chance. I was kinda hoping it would come back a bit more north. I think all of townsville wanted it to be a dam filler. I never know it may come back north. Lol

Yes, but depending on a cyclone to fill the dam? Let it dry out so politicians realize that Townsville needs more adequate water supply.

Extended drought years are "normal" for the Townsville climate.

Yeah it's a pity we didn't score any rainfall from this system.

It will be a mostly fine, hot day in Townsville tomorrow.

Looking further ahead, there should be some instability locally by the weekend, GFS hints at another Low forming in the far NE Coral Sea in just under 2 weeks from now.

For Townsville tonight and tomorrow morning going by BOM's Meteye, winds should increase to 30-35kts (55-65km/h) after 7pm, and then to 35-45kts (65-83km/h) by about 7am tomorrow morning. Assuming Debbie sticks to their predicted path.

Yeah, the gust forecast from the TAF shows:
75 km/h from 7pm
85 km/h from 12am
120 km/h from 4am

While Meteyes gust forecast is:
70 km/h at 7pm
73 km/h at 10pm
78 km/h at 1am
83 km/h at 4am
88 km/h at 7am
91 km/h at 10am
94 km/h at 1pm
101 km/h at 4pm
98 km/h at 7pm

Personally, I don't see any possibility of it getting anywhere near 100 km/h at this stage, maybe 80, but not 100.

On another note, knowing we were relatively in the clear for the duration of the day, I had not yet finished clearing my verandah, and went out to Woolworths this morning to grab a few more things.

Came home and found my apartment unlocked, freaked.
The building manager for the apartment building I live in had let himself in without notifying us, and literally threw all my remaining verandah items, including plants all over my carpet leaving massive stains... wrecking my carpet savagely!

Had a yell at him and told him that we wouldn't see any bad winds until tonight at the earliest as was evident from the current track map at the time and that there was plenty of time to prepare.

He yelled at me, no, it's obvious that we'll be getting destructive winds by 11am. You've left it too late to prepare, we had a curfew set of 10am and anyone who hadn't finished preparing had their stuff forcibly removed. No one ever informed me, and now my carpet is ruined, so pissed. Apparently because it was an "emergency situation" he is authorised to do whatever the hell he wants in the apartment.

Where would you like us to put a better dam? There isn't anywhere that a new one can be sited which is why we have all been pushing for the Hells Gate dam to get the go ahead. It isn't as simple as letting the dam go dry to impress the politicians as they don't give a rats about us and they haven't bothered about us or our problems for years. How do you think our dam normally gets filled? By a semi decent wet season. i.e. an average rainfall of greater than 900mm all of which has to fall over the catchment area and not like our patchy rubbish we have had for the last 3 years. A cyclone was our last chance until Nov/December to get a bit of a top up. In the meantime we are pumping water from the Burdekin dam at around $25,000.00 a day which being a rate payer means I am paying for that via my rates with zero practical or financial help from Brisbane. Yes we are already on level 3 water restrictions.

Just woke up, Debbie is certainly taking her time on approach, I locked up tight expecting gusty winds last night but it was pretty quiet. Now a stiff breeze outside and I think a spattering of rain is starting. Will be watching with great interest, daytime crossing, hope it makes it more bearable for those in her path

Just finished final preps. Fridge full of p!ss and freezer full of ice, just in case the world ends. Pulled down the greenhouse and shifted a ton of plants. Sick of plants. Now to go in and finalise at work and then kick back and watch things unfold.

Stay safe everyone especially those in the thick of it.

Can't see how Townsville will receive gusts at this stage. CT might, but she's moving so slow that she'll weaken well to the ESE of it before she poses much of a threat.

Yes RD, I hope so. Even low cat 2 winds would do plenty of damage out here.

Mate can I also compliment you on your management of the TC thread. You have done a great job.

Yep the cyclone thread was pretty decent last night without too many trolls. I don't know about this morning because I haven't looked at it yet. It must be an official disaster because Kochie is covering(?) it for channel 7.

Is Kochie covering it from the centre of the cyclone from his motel in Cairns?

Lol like he covered Yasi from Townsville. Mind you we coped a battering from Yasi so he got to see first hand what being on the edge of a cyclone was like but I think he is in Wide Bay reading some posts on Facebook. May as well be in Cairns. I don't watch channel 7 most days and haven't watched him for at least 10 years.

I am starting to think we are going to get bugger all from Deb. Blowing a bit right now, but no more than a good September mango breeze. The speed she is moving is the issue with penetration. She is likely to dip away sharply to the south once she crosses.

I don't think Deb will solve the water issues unfortunately. Hope this isn't the end of our chances this season.☹️

We won't get much rain from her as she is too far south. Might get a bit of wind but then I had baked beans for lunch so apologies if it adds to the problem.

I'm so excited I am tossing up either having a Nanna nap or Xbox.

Sick and tired of the media coverage. Its just the same waffle repeated on an endless loop.

Good on Koshie if he is in Bowen at least he will now have a better understanding about what being in a real cyclone is all about. No doubt there will need to be a change of undies about now.

Should be a mostly fine week, and next week as well with maybe a few showers returning later in the week.

I'm extremely grateful that Debbie did not impact locally, parts of the city would have been without power for days or weeks and the damage pretty extreme considering how built up the city is.

It's a pity we didn't receive any rain though, which is what the dam desperately needs. Ross River Dam is at it's lowest level at this time of year since at least 2009.

This time last year it was at 30%, we are currently at 19%.

Breezy and light rain out here. I imagine we will get dropped from the warning zone in the next run or so.

So much for 200mm. Lucky to get 2mm at this rate.

Anyway, entertaining in what has been yet another fairly ordinary wet season.

Yeah mate. The transformer on Hicks St blew. It takes a fair load and has done it before. I think you can claim compensation under Ergons policy, I do not know what the parameters are though.

We cop a fair share of power outages at our place. It's back on now but very frustrating when it happens. I'll look into the compensation. Cheers.

Extremely fast rises in the Burdekin at Dalbeg:

6am - 3.28m
9am - 9.27m (6m rise in 3 hrs)
12pm- 12.9m (another 3.63m, total of 9.63m in 6 hrs!)

these will rapid rises will no doubt be reflected downstream to Clare & Inkerman Bridge

Loving the hornets tonight. I wonder if they are taking advantage of the cloud/rain/cells and doing training in it. They don't seem to be going out to Rattlesnake.

Just talking to my dear old folks in Blowen Bowen tonight. They are in the midst rite now of the worst thunder storm they can recall, and they have lived there for many many years.
130mm rain since 6pm and its still going nuts, and the non stop lightning is the worst. I think they echo everyone's thoughts down there. They have had enough. They want this all gone.

The Don River could be a disaster tonight.

Yes, courtesy of ex-tc Debbie moving off the SE QLD coast and giving us a blast of dry overland air. Could possibly be the first taste of "wintery" conditions this year. Probably the lowest dew points since Spring :-( It will seem like winter compared to tonight's 27C dew point.

I was reading today on Face Ache about a potential upper level low potentially a low pressure system around the 5th/6th of April. I'm not to sure where he is getting his data from. I have been following him on Face Ache for quite a while now his accuracy is probably the worst from all the people I follow on there. He often says "I'm not going to do what some of these other weather guys do on here and make any prediction blah blah blah" He then makes his prediction often taking a cheap shot at some of the other weather guys on facebook. I can tell even though he never mentions their names but I can tell it is a swipe at nitso, trav and the boys. After all that his predictions which always come out on the verge of everything happening even that late in the game are either inaccurate way to late in the game to do anything about it or stating the bleeding obvious, I wont mention who he is but enough about that I just wanted to ask people who I do trust will give an honest answer and who's accuracy I know cannot be perfect but explain to me how they drew their conclusion and it makes sense to me I mainly ask because I flew back from work in Darwin for Debbie which given the track of the big girl I had no choice to do so to be back here with my girls. Anyway I am due to fly back to work on the 5th that's why I have come here hoping you guys were all over what I read today and were already discussing it. That leaves me with a couple of questions I need to ask myself. Either (A) where it is predicted to build up is nowhere in our stratosphere and not worth mentioning or (B) it has already been discussed and I have missed it or it is being discussed somewhere else or (C) You guys have no idea what I am talking about and old mate is just running with a scenario Deity came and told him about in his asleep and he is just running with it smile
Anyway guys anything you can give me on this would be greatly appreciated. I would have thought Deb would have cooled the surface temps and sucked to much energy up to sustain something else so soon but I am a weather fanatic big time however my knowledge I would say was limited at best. Nitso and Trav and the lads I'm sure have more important things going on at the moment and you guys in here I rate just as highly so here I am. Thanks for you help fellas

Long way out yet Gazza. BOM 10 day ACCESS showing WA getting hit first and then a hint of a low forming on Sat in eastern CS. Someone else will need to speak to the other models.

What does everyone think of the closure of businesses (schools was a given logistically so not questioning this) in TSV on Monday? Was it premature? Was there ever a directive saying the CBD was closed or "locked down"? There were no evacuations as far as I could see?

What did businesses use as the trigger to close as I could not see one unless you had a logistical issue with preparation and when you are an office there is isn't much to do.

I guess decisions had to be made well in advance of the situation at hand. Townsville and even out here in CT business owners and managers had to make the decision the night before to give staff appropriate time to make plans. Remember the night before it was hitting somewhere near Ayr. CT remained in the warning almost to the end.

Safety of staff is the first concern. I don't think missing a day of business is such a big deal, considering most people stayed home glued to the box or the net watching this disaster unfold. So business would of been pretty poor I imagine anyway. Probably made money by closing.

Just goes to show no one, not even BOM knew where she was going, so they they had to cover all outcomes

Very impressive humidity at the airport again tonight, currently reading 29.5c, 89% RH with 27.6 Dew Point, perfect for drinking beer and not much else.

It should be enough to see us comfortably set a new record for March minimums, maybe maximums too if tomorrow is another warm one.

that DP is just massive, southerly due in later, will ruin any chance of breaking the march record again.
