Interesting looking at historical data.

In 2011 Riverslea peaked on 1-1-2011 at 12pm. (27.53m)

At Rockhampton the Fitzroy did not peak until 5-1-2011.

In 2013, Riverslea peaked on 30-1-13 around 2pm (25.23m) , Rockhampton peaked on late 2-2-13

26.13 and falling, that will make it a lot lower at Rocky than the forcast 9.4. More like 8.4.

I would not say it is falling yet. There may yet be more water to arrive at Riverslea from another tributary.

One thing that might lower a flood level is the Fairbairn Dam would be sucking up a large amount of water from that region, and the Dawson River as well, it would be flowing backwards there.

Agree with that - there must be something the gauges aren't showing otherwise they wouldn't be shutting the airport and doing the crossover on the highway

To be honest wilyms, I do not think they really know how high it will get. I still do not think it will get to 9.4m.

9m is still a significant event!
As bradcq pointed out the other day, this is without major inflows from the Emerald catchment so if that had flooded too you can only imagine the possible peak height.
Pretty sure the 1918 event would have been this type of event plus the Emerald catchment....

My back yard should escape major innundation at that level, street shouldnt fill up either. Not going to be complacent though, you dont know how the dynamics of the river have changed over the years from previous events.

The Fitzroy is a wonderful system and can absorb some big flows in the upper reaches and have floods much smaller than most who don't know the river would assume. Had the Dawson and tributaries been in major flood too theatre would have been a much larger flood. Also further rainfall while the river is in flood affects heights along her entirety. Both happened in 1918 and in an even bigger flood in the mid 1800s.

My grandad kept records for floods on the Fitzroy for many decades and no two floods a Can be compared due to different flows from her catchment. Riverslea is the only point that a flood peak can be determined with confidence. Going on the data my grandad has i would say a peak in rocky of 8.85 - 8.9m

Great comments raiderpete82. I was looking through some of the hydraulic reports done over the years over the weekend and even the complex models have great difficulty in accurately predicting gauge heights at rocky. They had 200mm variability at times.
As you say, Riverslea is the key for Rocky.
