Yeah Wet Snow, pretty interesting weather going on over there. I remember having a look at weatherobs (look it up) a few days ago my local time and seeing some pretty impressive contrasts in Colorado. Temps were in the mid 60's at Pueblo and Caon City but in the high 30's for Colorado Springs and well into the Celsius negatives (below 32F) in Denver and surrounds.

The weather here has also been very variable which is unusual in summer. This is the maximums for the last week in Sydney:

12/12- 82F
12/13- 100F
12/14- 99F
12/15- 66F
12/16- 78F
12/17- 93F
12/18- 70F

The average is 77F and most days are generally between 73 and 80. Unusual for December to have such warm days and such cold days as well

Hello Wave Rider: Many Thanks for that Very Information. Yes, it's apparent that the locations near the ocean seem to have some fairly variable temperature conditions (esp. in the same week).
Our Summers (except very early & very late) tend to be fairly uniform (not that much variation) temperature-wise, as our Summers tend to have an acute lack of (temperature-changing) cold fronts (only the strongest cold fronts can penetrate the "Bermuda High", which controls our area of the US in Summertime). The biggest daily variation in a day in that time would likely be if a heating shower sat on top us. Our Springtime & Autumns tend to have the biggest temperature variations. Thanks Again.
Today (Wednesday the 21st), is the 1st (official) Day of Winter here in the NH (our Sunset was at only 5:06PM today; I'm ready for longer daylight hours).

And a great Christmas Wet Snow to you and yours. You seem to have had quite a warm Autumn there, about 5 degrees F above the long term mean and quite dry.

Today Christmas Eve in Sydney was warm and humid with highs in the Fahrenhiet 80s and late afternoon thunderstorms. Tomorrow looks humid and a bit warmer (low 80s to low 90s depending upon distance from the coast) and possibly more thunderstorms inland. Getting hotter over the next few days, maybe cooling down for new year.

Hello Steve777 & All:

Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.......HIGH........LOW..........RAIN
Dec..18..27F/-2.7C..17F/-8.3C...---
.......19..39F/3.8C....9F/-12.7C..---
.......20..49F/9.4C...22F/-5.5C...---
.......21..62F/16.6C..33F/0.5C....---
.......22..59F/15C....38F/3.3C....---
.......23..48F/8.8C...37F/2.7C....0.40"/10.1mm
.......24..54F/12.2C..48F/8.8C....0.40"/10.1mm

For the week of Dec. 18-24: Mena's Avg. Max.: 49.7F/9.8C; Avg. Min.: 28.7F/-1.8C.

Winter officially arrived here on the NH on the 21st and the weather was accordingly variable. Early-week chill was due to passage of Canadian cold front (on the 17th), Low-pressures to South caused the late-week rain and also caused nighttime temperature rises with gusty S winds, cloudiness, fog and light rain. Another week of not seeing that much sunshine--not a fan of this weather-pattern for that reason.
Overall High--nighttime temperature rise, 11:35PM--listed for the 23rd; the temperature continued to rise to the top on the 24th.
Today, Christmas, didn't feel very Christmaslike here: As a Warm front caused gusty & warm S winds, more clouds & fog and light rain, with temperatures rising into the 60sF/16C+ (Mena's avg. max. for December 25th is 49F/9.4C).
The trailing Pacific cold front will pass through in a few hours and the temperatures will get a bit cooler as the week progresses.

Hope ALL Enjoyed a Wonderful & Blessed Christmas.

*This is rain equivalent of .4"/1.0CM of snowfall

This week had a little bit of everything: Warmth, winter chill, a thundershower and even a bit of snow. Rain on 1st-2nd due to a Warm front meandering to our South; actually had a Thundershower on the 2nd--started just after 9AM, with a temperature of only 45F/7.2C (we don't get too many Thunderdays in January; especially a thundershower with such a low temperature). A dry Canadian cold front passed through late on the 3rd; the light snowfall was delivered by a Low-Pressure vortex passing to our south. The snow fell overnight (starting just before 12:15AM) and barely covered the ground and streets, the snowshowers quit for a while and most snowfall disappeared; later in the afternoon, the snowshowers started again and barely covered the streets and ground. Happy to see the snow as even that scant total was more snow than fell here in all of 2016.
Overall Low-11:07PM-listed for the 3rd; Overall Low-11:47PM-listed for the 5th; Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-11:35PM-listed for the 6th (the Daytime High being only 23F/-5C around 2:20PM).

Conditions at 12:01AM on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Mena's Intermountain Municipal Airport-Happy New Year: Cloudy & Fog, Ceiling 200FT/60.9M; Temperature: 48F/9C; Dew Point: 48F/9C; Visibility: 2miles/3.2kilometers; Wind: ENE at 3MPH/4.8KPH; Barometer: 29.92"/1,013.2hPa

48 Contiguous US High Maximum: 86F/30.0C at Fort Myers, Florida
48 Contiguous US Low Minimum: -15F/-26.1C at Pinedale, Wyoming

Forecast for upcoming week calls for much warmer conditions with thundershowers and showers for much of the week.

*=This is a Record High Max. for the Date (Breaking 71F/21.6C, set in 1971)

This week featured mostly above-normal warmth. A couple of dry Pacific cold front passed through (on the 10th & 12th); fairly thick all-day for on the 14th, as a Warm front was to our South.
Overall High (nighttime temperature rise due to strong & warm S winds)--11:54PM--listed for the 9th; Overall Low--11:35PM--listed for the 10th; Overall Low--11:41PM--listed for the 12th.
As long as the Jet Stream stays to our North, this weather pattern will continue. I don't mind the warmth, but I'm not liking the dampness & lack of sunshine.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for continued above-normal temperatures with very good shower chances for early-week & mid-week.

Hi wet snow, maximums above 70F/21C seem pretty high in your area in mid winter. Do such temperatures usually occur a few times a month in January? I was in the US briefly in November/December last year and several people I talked to in NY were commenting on how unseasonably warm it was in late Nov when the temperature was 61F/16C!

We also had a very warm winter just gone with record breaking temperatures of 84F/29C in June and 81F/27.2C in July. Our spring then turned out to be below average but very hot temperatures have returned this summer, with 12 days over 95F/35C so far, compared to our average of 8 from December to February and our summer is only half way through! The next four days here are forecast to reach between 95F/35C and 102F/39C, so no relief for a while yet.

Have a good one and enjoy the comparative coolness,
Gus

Hello LightningGus & ALL:

We here in the NH are actually less than a month into Winter, as Winter here in the NH officially began on December 21st.

In the early parts of Winter--very late December into mid-January--before the cold air becomes firmly settled in, we can have highs into the lower 70'sF/21C+ on some days. In these instances, the warmth is pre-frontal and is aided by gusty & warm S (moist) & SW (dry) winds.
Especially in Winter, the Jet Stream dictates our temperature profile and the types of precipitation (cold rain, freezing rain/ice, snow) that my area will get. Our current run of warmer weather is due to the Jet Stream having a position to the North of my area, allowing warmer air to stay in place (a perfect example of this was last weekends' ice storm over parts of N Texas, Oklahoma & Missouri: During that time, the 32F/0C line--for a couple days [as per Hourly Obs. from coolwx.com]--moved no further SE than the extreme NW corner of Arkansas [as if the colder air had hit a "wall"]; while we here, in W Arkansas, had clouds, thick fog and temperatures of 45-50F/7-10C; so according to the temperature profile/isolines, it was easy to see where the Jet Stream was located).
That said, I'm enjoying the warmth while we have it, as "Ol' Man Winter" will come for a prolonged visit soon enough; and the colder air will firmly settle in.

Have A Great One, Good Buddy & Take Care!

Kind Wishes~~~Wet Snow

Thanks for your reply wet snow, ah yes I should've known that winter in the US is from late December to March, as opposed to the month by month basis for seasons in Australia. Hope you see some proper wintery weather soon!

Hello Folks:

I was just messaging one of my Awesome Aussie friends on FB and we were talking about volcanoes. He brought up the effects on the Aussie weather brought about by the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. This eruption also brought my area a dramatically coolish Summer in 1992. Here are some weathernumbers for Mena for Summer 1992:

*We only had 9 Days all year (inc. 7 Days in Summer), where the maximum was 90F+/32.2C+.
*Our hottest 1992 temperature was only 91F/32.7C on July 25th & August 10th.
*July 1992 saw a monthly average maximum of 86F/30C--normal monthly maximum for July is 90F/32.2C.
*August 1992 saw a monthly average maximum of 83F/28.3C--normal monthly maximum for August is also 90F/32.2C.

Hello Wet Snow. Always good to see your numbers. You've had a warm Winter week. I like my Summers to be hot and Winters cold.

We're having a run of heat over much of South Eastern Australia, including the Sydney area. Penrith on the Western outskirts of the Sydney metroplolitan area (about 55km / 34 miles inland from Sydney) has averaged 39 degress C (102F) in the ten days January 9 to 18, including 5 days over 40 (104) and 3 over 43.4 (110). Yesterday maxed at 45 (113).

A cool change came through late yesterday and today's (19th) max there was 22 (72). The next few days will be normal hot (high 80s) then the heat returns early next week.

Summer in 1991/92 over here was cool as I recall. Temps at Sydney stations seem to have been about 1 degree C / 2F below long term averages. Below average months at any time of year are uncommon these days.

For the week of Jan. 15-21, Mena's Avg. Max.: 48.4F/9.1C; Avg. Min.: 27.0F/-2.7C

Another very weather-active week with lots of rain, good amounts of cloudcover & fog and not too much sunshine. Rainfall was brought by Pacific cold fronts (on the 16th & 21st) and by Low-pressure passing to our South (on the 18th). Had fairly thick all-day fog on the 15th, 18th & 19th. Had all-day sunshine on the 20th and sunny conditions until around 12NOON on the 17th & 21st.
It's been so mild here lately that I even heard frogs croaking at a nearby pond on the night of the 19th--a sound not really heard here in Winter. Most Thankfully, a thundershower cell--Severe Warned for possible good-sized hail--just missed Mena, to the SE/E (cell headed NE), on the night of the 21st.
Overall Low-11:37PM-listed for the 16th. As of today (Monday), the death toll in the Southern US from the tornadoes & severe weather outbreak stands at 16.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for overall cooler (closer to normal) temperatures and mostly dry & sunny conditions.

I'd like to wish ALL My Awesome Aussie Friends/Mates A Very Happy upcoming Australia Day. I continue to enjoy ESPN's live coverage of the Australian Open Tennis tournament.

Kind Wishes & Take Care~~~Wet Snow
