For the week of Jan. 22-28: Mena's Avg. Max.: 49.5F/9.7C; Avg. Min.: 27.0F/-2.7C

This was the antithesis of the previous week. Very sunny skies from the 23rd on. Raintotal on the 22nd was carryover rain from previous days' Pacific cold front passage. A dry, but fairly powerful Pacific cold front passed through midday on the 25th. Only very scattered--and sometimes very high--cloudcover throughout the week. I'm loving the abundant sunshine.
Overall Low--11:40PM--listed for the 22nd; Overall High--12:01AM and Overall Low--11:25PM--listed for the 25th.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for a nice--but brief--warm-up, cooler by the midweek and very good rainchances by the weekend.

I'm kinda bummed out that the Australian Open is over with; I'm just waiting for the start of the AFL season. Go Bombers!

Another Winter week with dry conditions and an up-and-down temperature profile. My area could really do with a good rain, as it's getting somewhat dry. Been so mild here that I actually saw small flies (in daytime) and moths (fluttering around lights, at night) on the 1st! The (American) Robins are also around, along with the Mourning Doves.
Had a dry Canadian cold front pass through late PM on the 1st. The 2nd was Groundhog Day here in the US & "Punxsutawney Phil"--the groundhog from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania--emerged from his den and saw his shadow; which purportedly means we'll have 6 more weeks of Wintry weather across the US. If so, Winter will have to get into Overdrive to make up for lost time in my area of the US.
Overall High-12:01AM & Overall-Low-11:47PM listed for the 2nd (as the Daytime High was 46F/7.7C at the 7:11AM sunrise). Overall Low-11:46PM-listed for the 3rd.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for warm conditions and good thundershower chances early-week and another mid-week cool-down, with more rainchances heading into the weekend.

Another--overall--incredibly mild Mid-Winter week, with virtually no rainfall. We really, really could use a good raindump (or two) as, since the morning of the 9th, Polk County is in a Countywide Burn Ban (rarely do we get such Bans at this time of year). A (sadly dry) Pacific cold front passed through on the evening of the 7th--the cooler air lagging somewhat behind the front. Lower humidity levels aided the rapid rises in temperatures.
Been so mild here that I actually saw a dandelion in a yard on the 8th; there are the green shoots of jonquils/daffodils starting to spring up next to my walk and there are small wild onions starting to sprout in my yard, and I'm starting to see--already--small patches of green in area yards. While on my way to church this (Sunday) morning--not far down the street from my house--I actually saw a Tulip Tree in full bloom (also noticed a couple other trees in bloom)--Where's Winter?!? I guess this is what a "Southern California Winter" must be like (LOL)!
Overall Low--11:05PM--listed for the 7th (the morning minimum was a very balmy 62F/16.6C); Overall Low--11:45PM--listed for the 8th. Places in Oklahoma & S Texas were around 95F/35C for tops during the week!
Forecast for upcoming week calls for another fair cool-down (& Hopefully, very good thundershower chances) for early-week with--again--rebounding temperatures as the week progresses.

P.S. Mena's Hottest-Ever Feb. Max. is 84F/28.8C on Feb. 22, 1996 (that was a very strange month, as our minimum was down to 3F/-16.1C on Feb. 3rd & had a top of 70F/21.1C on the 8th)!

Hello Folks:
As to the unseasonal warmth in Arkansas lately; here's some excerpts from a story in today's (Feb. 14) ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE (Little Rock, AR) newspaper:

Mosquitoes Awakened Early
Warm winter days rouse tiny bloodsuckers from hiding

Arkansans aren't the only ones enjoying the unseasonably high temperatures over the past week.
Mosquitoes are also reveling in the warmth, causing residents to swat at the pesky pests earlier than ever and city officials to consider spraying for them weeks before they normally do.
"It's unprecedented", said Daniel Massengale, director of Stuttgart's mosquito-control program...."They are coming out the earliest I've seen in 20 years".
Massengale said he normally begins spraying in the Arkansas County town of 9,200 in mid-April. This year, because of the mild winter, he anticipates he'll begin his battle against the mosquitoes in early March.
Arkansas has seen a warm winter, meteorologists at the National Weather Service in North Little Rock say.
On Saturday, Little Rock's high temperature of 79F/26.1C broke the (daily) record of 78F/25.5C set in 1922. Harrison shattered its high mark of 76F/24.4C set in 1928 when the mercury climbed to 84F/28.8C on Saturday. Fayetteville and Fort Smith also set records for high temperatures.
"Trees are blooming", said Joe Goudsward, a meteorologist at the NWS office in North Little Rock. "It's spring already. It's very early. Normally, we see this in late-March."
Mosquitoes "over-winter", or hibernate during cold spells, hiding under leaves, in cracks and crevices around homes, inside garages, and among litter and debris, said Tonja McKay, director of environmental sciences at Arkansas State University-Jonesboro....McKay said mosquitoes need at least five consecutive days of warm weather to develop from eggs to larvae...

Thankfully, I've not seen any mosquitoes here. The dry spell was broken in a big way here today--courtesy of Low-Pressure passing to our South. I copped 3.15"/80.0mm rain today & the daytime temperatures stayed in the low-to-mid 40sF/4-6C.

Thanks for posting that article Wet Snow, interesting read and sounds like we're not the only ones experiencing well above average temperatures.

Glad you finally received some rain, still waiting here, we have not even had 3.15"/80mm in the last 2 months. In fact it hasn't rained in my location for 26 days and almost every day in that period has been above 31C/88F, with most being above 35C/95F. This included our hottest day on record of 41.6C/106.9F last Sunday (12th). All of the grass in our yard is brown and withered and even some of our trees and shrubs are wilting despite regular watering. frown

Heres a couple of articles regarding the severe heat and drought we along with most of eastern Australia have been experiencing over the past weeks.

Hello LightningGus & All:

For 2016, Little Rock, AR averaged temperatures +2.64F above normal per month. The only below-normal month was May (-.8F below normal), the most above-normal temperature month was March (+4.8F above normal). January 2017 saw temperatures +5.4F above normal in LR.
As for 2016 rainfall, LR totaled 56.12"/1,425.4mm (+6.37"/+161.7mm; 112% normal), ranging from a low of 1.31"/33.2mm in September to a high of 12.33"/313.1mm in March.

@Lightning Gus: Many, Many Thanks for those Very Interesting articles. It's kinda hard for me to comprehend that sort of high heat as we do not regularly get heat like that (that high & widespread) in my area (as I've mentioned before, in some of our wetter Summers, we fail to hit 100F/37.7C for a Yearly High Maximum here). The excessive dryness is tough for me to wrap my head around as well. Hope those impacted areas get relief very soon. As always, I hope (& pray) that the bushfire seasons in Aus-land are very minor. Have A Great One, Good Buddy & Many Thanks Again.

Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

.......17..60F/15.5C..40F/4.4C...---
.......18..62F/16.6C..52F/11.1C..0.40"/10.1mm

For the week of Feb. 12-18: Mena's Avg. Max.: 54.1F/12.2C; Avg. Min.: 30.8F/-0.6C

This past week featured another roller-coaster temperature profile and--finally--a great raindump.
A dry Pacific cold front passed through on the 12th; the hefty raintotal was due to Low-Pressure passing to our South & the late-week rain was due to an Upper-Level Low vortex passing over my area (I was awakened by thunder just after 4:45AM--that cell just missed us and I heard more thunder around 6:10AM, we got showers from that cell). Was great to hear thunder again.
I stepped outside on the morning of the 15th and noticed small clumps of Henbit (Lamium Amplexicaule) growing in my front yard. Because of the recent & prolonged dryness, the rain on the 14th mostly all soaked into the ground (we really needed a slow & steady rain like that).
Overall Low-11:45AM-listed for the 12th (the Morning Minimum was a balmy 61F/16.1C); Overall High-12:01AM-listed for the 14th (as the Daytime Maximum was a chilly 44F/6.6C around 3PM).
Forecast for upcoming week calls for very good rainchances early-week with a good warm-up following and another cool shot of air by the weekend.

Hello Homer & ALL:

A few days ago, a Great Aussie FB Friend informed me of the run of Record-Breaking warmth that Moree, NSW has had (consecutive days of 95F+/35C+ & 100F+/37.7C+ temperatures); I decided to see what I could find--as per such warmth--for here in Mena. It would take some time to check the Summer temperatures here for every year, so I mainly looked at the Very Warm Summers of 1936, 1954, 1980 & 2011:

I feel this is likely the longest stretch of such temperatures here in Mena:
Consecutive Days, Max. 95F+/35C+: 22 (Aug. 3-24, 1936)
Consecutive Days, Max. 100F+/37.7C+: 16 (Aug. 8-23, 1936)

@Homer: Hey! Many Thanks For The Kind Birthday Wishes--Yes, I Had A Wonderful Day (Also, Many Thanks To The Others For Their Kind Wishes As Well).

For the week of Feb. 19-25: Mena's Avg. Max.: 56.4F/13.5C; Avg. Min.: 32.1F/0C

This week featured Spring-like warmth, a nice cool down and some showers. A Pacific cold front (passage on night of 20th) caused the raintotal, a dry Pacific cold front rolled through on the 24th. Otherwise, more signs of an early Spring: pear trees (& others) are blooming; as of the 20th, the Jonquils/Daffodils are blooming in my front yard; I stepped outside just after 12:30PM (temperature only around 56F/13.3C) on the 24th, and was startled by seeing a Garter snake--sunning itself--nearby (we really don't see snakes this deep into Winter here). More green patches in area lawns. At least the morning of the 25th felt more Winterlike.

First 100F+/37.7C+ Temperature in the US for 2017 happened on the 23rd (Day 54!) as the Warmest Temperature in the Contiguous 48 US States on that day was 100F/37.7C at Edinburg, Texas & Laredo, Texas.

Sunday, February 19, 2017: My 56th Birthday: Conditions at 12:01AM at Mena's Intermountain Municipal Airport: Fog, ceiling 100'/30.4M; Temperature: 50F/10C; Dew Point: 50F/10C; Visibility: 1mile/1.6Kms; Wind: Calm; Barometer: 29.94"/1,013.9hPa.
48 US Contiguous State High Max.: 93F/33.8C--McAllen, TX
48 US Contiguous State Low Min.: 12F/-11.1C--Mammoth Lakes, CA

Forecast for upcoming week calls for good shower chances early-week with another cool-down by mid-week.

Hello Folks:

For the week of Feb. 26-Mar. 4: Mena's Avg. Max.: 58.1F/14.5C; Avg. Min.: 34.2F/1.2C

Another unseasonably warm--and virtually dry--week. A Pacific cold front passed through on the 28th. Quite a temperature contrast across that cold front on the 28th: As per the US Metar Map, at 11:05PM, it was 46F/7.7C in Fort Scott, Kansas, while 23miles/37kilometers due South, it was 70F/21.1C at Atkinson Airport in Pittsburg, Kansas.
The cloudy days had light sprinkles and were quite humid feeling at times. More trees are blooming (as well as flowers) & more green patches showing up in area lawns.
Overall High-12:01AM & Overall Low-11:24PM-listed for the 1st.

To give some idea of the excessive mildness in our 2016/2017 Winter thus far (no cold air in sight and Spring arrives on March 20th):
For the past 10 Winters*, from Winter (Dec. 22) 2005/(Mar. 19) 2006 to Winter (Dec. 20) 2014/(Mar. 19) 2015: Mena averaged 59.1 Winter Days with minimums of 32F/0C or lower (ranging from a low of 39 Days In Winter 2011/2012 to a high of 76 Days in Winter 2013/2014; every day in January 2014 had a Freezing or lower minimum).
Thus far this Winter (Dec. 20, 2016-Mar. 19, 2017), Mena has had 25 Winter Days with Freezing or Lower minimums!
(*=I did not use Winter 2015/2016 as temperature data was missing from Jan. 1-Feb. 4).

Forecast for upcoming week calls for continued very mild conditions with good Thundershower chances early-week & later in the week. Next Sunday, most of the US will go on Daylight Saving Time. On that day, Mena's Sunrise will be 7:29AM, with 7:22PM Sunset! Yippee!!!

Hello Folks:

Besides the Doppler Radar Time Lapse vid of the US weather for all of 2016 (which I posted in the US Severe Weather Season thread); I've found another fascinating timelapse vid:

This vid is of the US' Weather for all of 2011 (Main map shows Doppler Time Lapse, Map at upper right shows Infrared Timelapse and below that the Visible Cloudcover Timelapse.) The pointer (time counter) at bottom crosses red places, you'll see major weather events described. I love time-lapses, as I hope you'll enjoy this: You'll even see a couple HUGE cut-off Lows and even a "retrograde" Low-Pressure. The "Bermuda High" is very evident (esp. in August) as the thundershowers flare-up on the periphery of that High pressure.
