Hello Folks:
Well, things are not looking good for the next couple days here. We are to have periods of rain, freezing rain and sleet overnight and for much of Friday (as southerly-tracking Low-pressure moves over the area). KENA's updated local forecast mentions ice accumulations up to 1"/2.5CM. I'm REALLY hoping (& praying) we don't get that much ice as I really don't need to lose power (and DEFINITELY wouldn't want to see tree damage like we had in the ice storms of December 2000; was without power for 4 days then, but then we had a wood-burning stove which I don't have now).
At 12:01AM today (Thur.) it was 51F/10.5C, at the 7:18AM sunrise it was 48F/8.8C and now 6:06PM we are having steady rain (raining for almost an hour) with the temperature fallen to 36F/2.2C. The forecast maximum tomorrow is only 32F/0C. My area is under a Winter Storm Warning from now until 9PM Friday.
I REALLY don't like the looks of this!

Cheers~~~Wet Snow

Hey Folks:
Here's just an update on the icy situation here:

Yesterday (Thur.) the rain began freezing around 9PM (I copped .50"/12.7mm rain yesterday). The rain continued overnight--with the temperature steady near the 30F/-1.1C mark--and today (Fri.) the area looked like a glassy wonderland. The rain (copped another .70"/17.7mm today) ended as a period of fairly heavy snowflurries about 4:30PM. Thankfully, although the powerlines are really sagging, we've not lost power here. I was fetching the newspaper earlier today and heard a *crack* sound, which was part of the raingutter on the front of the house falling. Thankfully (so far) I've only noticed a few fairly large pinelimbs felled by the ice, in the yard. Hopefully (but I doubt it) this'll be the last freezing rain episode we'll have to contend with this winter (IF the layer of cold air had've been thicker, we would have had a nice snowdump!) Due to recent warmth, the area streets and roads are mostly all passable. Our tops are forecasted to be in the low 40sF/~6C by Sunday so hopefully a good deal of melting will take place and relieve the stress on the area trees and powerlines. Areas in N Arkansas likely copped more ice and had way more snow totals.

Cheers~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Now, 11:39PM Friday, the precipitation is to the east of us and the temperature is fallen to 26F/-3.3C.

Late January Greetings Folks:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.....HIGH.......LOW........RAIN
Jan..24..48F/8.8C...37F/2.7C...0.20"/5mm
.....25..48F/8.8C...32F/0C.....---
.....26..50F/10C....29F/-1.6C..---
.....27..56F/13.3C..31F/-0.5C..---
.....28..51F/10.5C..31F/-0.5C..0.50"/12.7mm
.....29..31F/-0.5C..25F/-3.8C..0.70"/17.7mm
.....30..31F/-0.5C..24F/-4.4C..---

This week had just about everything: warmth, coldness, wind, liquid and frozen precipitation. Rain on 24th was lingering from previous days' Pacific cold front passage. Late on the 27th, a dry Canadian cold front passed through (southwards)--which flooded the region with a much colder airmass; shortly, a southerly-tracking low (Pacific cold front) headed (from W to E) towards my area and set-up the classic "ice storm/freezing rain" scenario (which I described in above post). Temperatures fell steadily on the 28th and the rain began to freeze just before 9PM; freezing rain continued overnight (temperatures steady near 30F/-1.1C) and ended as brief but heavy snowshowers beginning around 4:30PM on the 29th. I did manage to cop three-quarters of an inch/almost 2cm snow from those showers. Thankfully, the ice did not accumulate heavy enough in my area to cause power outages (areas of N/NW Arkansas, Oklahoma had heavier ice/snow accumulations and there were power outages in those areas, along with numerous traffic mishaps). Quite a bit of (ice) melting is taking place (snowcover all gone) today (Sunday, now 3:28PM, the Mena Info Line gives the temperature at 33F/0.5C). Due to recent warmth, the area streets/highways really didn't get into too bad shape.
Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 8:54PM-listed for the 24th; Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 9:44PM-listed for the 28th; The High on the 29th was at 12:01AM and abt. 12:20PM and the Overall Low was abt. 9:30PM. Mabye next time, I'll get a bit more snow, without the ice. Upcoming week looks fairly dry with more seasonal temperatures (tops in the 50sF/10C+).

Wishing ALL A Super Week~~~Wet Snow

Hello Folks:
(Sorry for the late post but I had to have a short hospital stay).
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.....HIGH........LOW........RAIN

Feb...1..45F/7.2C....23F/-5C....---
......2..44F/6.6C....29F/-1.6C..---

......6..40F/4.4C....34F/1.1C...---

Another cloudy, cool and wet week--sure wish we could see some sunshine (finally saw a good deal of sun today=Tuesday the 9th). Rain was due to another Low-pressure passing to our south (on the 4th). A truly raw day on the 4th with steady rain, temperatures steady near 36F/2.2C and cool NE breezes. All in all, just an ICKY Winter week. Overall Low-abt. 11:24PM-listed for the 2nd; Overall High-12:01AM-listed for the 4th. Had some SNOW yesterday--the 8th, which I'll detail in next weeks' report; otherwise temperatures are to remain on the cool side with more snowchances a little later on.

Wishing All A Fantastic Week~~~Wet Snow

Hi Wet Snow

That seems like a spell of weather similar to what we've had a few times during this winter here (aside from that wet day last Thursday). Good luck with the snow, hope you get a decent amount.

How common is snow in Mena during the late winter and early spring period?

We haven't reached 10C/50F for two months here, longest period on record (since 1973).

Best wishes and get well soon.

Hey Folks:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

.....13..47F/8.3C...29F/-1.6C..---

This week had another rare occurrance--2 snows in the same week. I had a colitis flare-up and was in the hospital, so I was unable to get the Maximum/Minimum temperatures for the 7th-8th (I do know the temperatures fell all day on the 8th). A Southerly-tracking low gave (I estimate) 2"/5CM Snow on the 8th, quite a bit of rain beforehand, so the raintotal is a rough estimate (est. 0.50"/12.7mm rain + 0.20"/5mm rain equivalent of the snow). Not far above freezing the next day, but by process of sublimation, quite a bit of the snow melted on the 9th (my area was on the southern fringe of the wintry precipitation). I copped another 2"/5CM snow (0.20"/5mm rain equivalent) on the 11th as another southerly-tracking low passed by (this time, my area was on the northern fringe of the frozen precipitation). The snow started just on 2PM and continued--steadily but with somewhat small flakes--barely into the next day (light early AM Snow Flurries on the 12th). The all-day sunshine we saw on the 9th was the most sun we've seen in almost 2 weeks. Higher temperatures caused much snowmelting the following day and was almost all finished off by the 13th. Had some light Freezing Fog on the morning of the 13th. Needless to say, I was about in "Snow Heaven" this week (but areas to the south of me REALLY got hammered!)
A Canadian cold front has also given us a dusting of snow (very heavy Snow flurries) today (Sunday, now 3:40PM). It was a fast-moving system: The day dawned clear with a temperature of 30F/-1.1C at 7AM; I saw the precipitation area getting closer (moving W-E)on radar and as I left for church at 9:30AM (40F/4.4C), clouds filled half the sky and (I guess) around 12NOON heavy flurries began falling (33F/0.5C); the snow has now stopped but grassy areas are covered. It's these "weather-active" days (days where the weather changes right before your eyes) that I really like to see. It's been quite a while since we've has such a long run of below-normal temperatures with such little temperature variation (shades of a "UK Steve Winter"...LOL...), at least the Snow--if only in dribs & drabs--makes things more bearable (for me anyway). Upcoming forecast calls for warmer conditions with shower chances later in the week (we may even hit 50F/10C for the 1st time this month!)

Wishing All A Grade-A Week~~~Wet (Keep It Comin') Snow

This week featured a chilly start with upward trending temperatures. The high on the 18th was the first time in the month with a top of 50F+/10C+ (also the 1st time for such a reading since January 28th--quite a cold stretch). A Canadian cold front gave a few hours of Very Heavy Snow Flurries on the 14th (snow barely covering the ground). Strong sunshine, little wind and lower humidity values made the maximums on the 17th-19th feel warmer than they actually were (my dog, "Blackie" was actually panting on those days). Mostly overcast on the 20th as a Pacific cold front approached (which gave me 1.20"/30.4mm in late AM thundershower this--Sunday--morning). Felt very raw on the 15th, with blustery NNW winds giving Wind Chill values of 20F/-6.6C or lower during the day. Overall Low-abt. 10:46PM-listed for the 14th. The pleasant days were great for enjoying just about any outdoor activity/yardwork.

Friday the 19th was my 49th Birthday. Conditions at 12:01AM at Mena's Intermountain Municipal Airport: Clear--no clouds below 12,000FT; Temperature: 33F/1C; Dew Point: 24F/-4C; Wind: Calm; Visibility: 10MI/16.1KM; Barometer: 30.14"/1,020.6hPa/mB.
48 Contiguous US State High Max.: 78F/25.5C at Yuma, Arizona.
48 Contiguous US State Low Min.: -12F/-24.4C at Wakefield, Michigan.

Upcoming forecast calls for much of the new week with continued maximums below 50F/10C with a bit of warming late week.

Wishing ALL A Most Excellent Week~~~Wet Snow

Hey Friends:

Quite a cold stretch of weather here: For the past 31 days--Jan. 25th-Feb. 23rd--we've only had 7 days [Jan. 26-28 & Feb. 18-21] with normal/above normal maximums.
Climatologically for the period (Jan. 25-Feb. 23) our average maximum would be 50F/10C rising to 57F/13.8C by Feb. 23rd. Our actual average maximum for the period is only 41.5F/5.2C--including 12 of those days where the top failed to reach 40F/4.4C.

BRRRRRRRR~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Thanks for the B-Day wishes, Mike M

Hey Folks:
(One last post before I get horizontal for a few hours).

My Great Aussie Mate [aka Supercell9], who lives in a NE Melbourne suburb, e-mailed me and said that Melbourne was fixing to break a record for the longest consecutive stretch with maximums of 68F+/20C+.

Well, I went searching through the weather records for Mena that I keep up with (since 1984). Our longest stretch--in that time--with maximums of 68F+/20C+ is 182 straight days, from April 16-Oct. 14 in 2007.

Interesting. By comparison, the longest period of 20C/68F maximums here is 53 days from July 5th - August 26th 1995 (July 2006 is the only month to have recorded at least a 20C maximum on every day in the month)

Hello Again Weather Friends:

Well, this February is shaping up to be the coolest one since at least 1989. The avg. max. for February 1989--temperature data for 24 days--was 43.3F/6.27C. So far for the first 24 days (temp. data for 22 days) of this February the avg. top is 43.2F/6.22C. Our climatological avg. max. for February is 55F/12.7C and our avg. max. for February 2009 was 57.5F/14.1C.

We've a decent chance of rain/snow mix overnight (now 10:02PM Thursday) and also later Friday night. The top today was another one (overcast) in the lower 40sF/~6C.

Cheers~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Hey UK Steve: What's been your avg. max. this month?

Hey Wet Snow. Whats your longest run where you've failed to reach 20c? Around here we usually get one or two mid winter days in the low to even mid 20's!

Greetin's Pingtang:

Well, I've just trawled through the records for Mena that I have (since 1984) and here is the answer to your question:

The most consecutive days here with a top below 68F/below 20C is 124 straight days, from Nov. 3, 2000-Mar. 6, 2001. We also had a 109-day stretch, from Nov. 19, 1992-Mar. 7, 1993.
(Our current streak is 36 straight days below 68F/below 20C...and counting...).

Kind Wishes~~~Wet Snow

Average maximum here this month is 5.4C (41.7F).

This page might interest you, it's a review of possibly the snowiest winter ever recorded in the UK (details are from Halesowen, which is not too far away from here)

Hello Folks:

(12:19PM Friday) Well, VERY HAPPY to report that I've already copped 2"/5CM of Snow (Big flakes) since the Snow began just after 7AM this morning (a period of sleet [frozen raindrops] beforehand). Early forecasts called only for a snow/rain mix, but it's all Snow and accumulating as the temperature is steady near 32F/0C-mark. This system--yet another Low-pressure to my south--is moving slowly (YAY!) so the Snow will continue for some time!

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Steve: Many Thanks for that Great Snow link!

Folks:

Forgot to add this to above post, but it looks like the avg. max. for January this year will be warmer than the avg. max. for February for the 1st time since 2006.
