Hi Nocturnal,

I have info from a reliable source that the NBN infrastructure damage will take a while to repair. Apparently most of the towers that are down haven't been given an ETA of being back on line yet. Expect a long wait.( I'm missing netflix).

I'll see what I can find out about Murwillumbah's observations tomorrow. The site that reports to the rain and river observations page is a different one to the one which reports (or, at the moment, doesn't report) to the current observations page.

THanks Blair. That might be the reason if the site reporting to the rainfall and rivers didn't get flooded but the official Murwillumbah site did.

We are okay here thanks nocturnal. A few people I know don't have power either so you're not the only one. Council have done a good job cleaning up so far too although it is sad about the death toll.

Can confirm that the Murwillumbah (Bray Park) site (the one which reports temperature) was flooded, and some of the instruments were washed away and need to be replaced.

That reminds me, this is north of our area but for those who haven't seen it yet, dramatic tornado footage south of Mackay spawned from Debbie:

Been awhile since I was on here.

I just wanted to post a collection of links to some of the survival &/or good news stories that emerged from this area after ex-STC Debbie:

(There are very likely more that I haven't linked here, feel free to share them.)

Also, increased homelessness has emerged as an issue as a result of this event:

Finally, a moving documentary from a local filmmaker: https://www.facebook.com/jnortheast.mintiemcfly/videos/1264674693652079/

Tonight's 7:30 Report on the ABC, I understand, will be talking about the ongoing effects of the flood and housing shortage issues.

Here's the link to tonight's coverage of the lack of housing I mentioned above: Flood ravaged town facing housing crisis

I also want to share this image I captured 2.5 weeks after the water receded. It's along Eviron Rd, about 3km east of Condong as the crow flies. There's an abandoned car on the corner, with police tape on the wiper blades. Gives you an idea of how high the water may have been ripping through there (although a local source said some road signs like this were actually completely covered.) eek frown

Would be good if the politicians who announced there would be support for these areas would come through with delivering the actual, physical support. The community itself has done a great job with recovery, but that can't continue without resources.

In showery and cool autumn weather, the worst-affected have had to make do with tents they bought from Kmart! With young children. The provision of demountable buildings and canvas tents would have been a step up, but no, not even those were offered, as far as I know...

That pic is pretty insane nocturnal. We had a similar type of thing out this way, all cleared now. Some signs like the one in the pic you would't have even thought were in any danger of flooding at all.
And that's not good about the housing situation. Surely you would have thought the government would provide some sort of assistance.

This March monthly report from BoM makes for a good read too. Has all the records that were broken for the event about two thirds of the way down.

Thanks for the link to that report, rainiac. Some jaw-dropping totals there.

I think the government is trying, but, as one of the homeless dudes said, they're tripping over their own red tape. Plus there is not enough flood-free land available, and the area is unaffordable for the lower income bracket, even at the best of times.
