Obs Hill only fell to 24.5C overnight but yesterday's 9am temp was 22.5C so that'll unfortunately be the recorded minimum

Despite missing out on yesterday’s rain event here, we still had well above average March rain with 157mm. There’s a noticeable step change in the weather this morning with the temperature still in single figures. Full sun now after scattered low level cloud earlier in the morning – it really feels like autumn now.

It's a beautiful cool, clear, sunny morning here. At 15.3 around midnight, it was the coolest temperature at OH since November.

The main rain has finished, without too much drama here, unlike up North. All the best for our Qld and North Coast colleagues. Down here, cloud and showers will continue for another week or so.

It will probably cloud over later when the wind turns more Southerly. There's some low cloud blowing in from the South as I type.

EDIT: beautiful sunrise pictures Eddy. I saw something like that yesterday morning before the rain started - a brief, bright red streak near the Eastern horizon.

OH has a new 'warm' record. March's average minimum temperature was 20.0, beating the old record of 19.7 set last year. Other Sydney stations and probably Illawarra, Tableland and Hunter stations would also have had record or near record minima. The BOM will cover that in its monthly report next week.

Assuming that today's max is about 23, the average maximum will be 25.6, 0.8 above the long term average but only shading the recent (1981-2010) average of 25.4.

Thanks Knot.

Showers are starting to ease now, went for a drive to check the beach out, plenty of leaf litter about and lots wheelie bins blown over and a bit of sand erosion on Jimmy's Beach.

Slowly starting to warm up too!!

Interesting stats Steve. It's certainly been a sticky March. At Bathurst Ag, one of the BoM's reference stations, the 2017 mean March max so far is 26.0°C, compared to the long term mean of 24.6°C, but well under the record of 29.9°C set in 1940. The mean minimum of 14.2°C would beat the record of 14.1°C set in 1939, but this morning's observation is missing, and it was a cold morning. Using Bathurst Airport's 6.8°C minimum as a guide, Bathurst Ag's 1939 record should still stand.

Clear and sunny but under 20C with a cold SWly. We have that really nice, wintery sky.

Nice and cool today atm.

Received 56mm in the gauge from last night smile , filled the dams back to about 75%, but another 2-3 inches would have filled the dams completely. But that can come next week. We need a few days for the ground to dry out a bit.

Some cold showers. Certainly warm nights throughout March. I think any minimum averages for Obs Hill have to be viewed in the context of concrete. Will there be any min average temp records broken at some other long term sites that are not beset with concrete everywhere. Concrete gives up its heat throughout the nite. It prolongs the heat exchange

True, Observatory Hill is a warm site in nearly all conditions except a sea breeze, when it is cool. You couldn't use it as an example in discussions of That Whereof We Cannot Speak. It is also pretty unrepresenative of what most Sydneysiders experience. But anomalies by and large give an indication of what is happening.

Bankstown, 20km to the SW, measured at a regional Airport surrounded by suburbia, had an average March minimum of 19.0, smashing its old record by a full degree (records since 1968). It is in an open area a hundred metres or so from a runway. Richmond RAAF (60 km North West of the CBD on the rural-urban fringe, surrounded by farmland, bush and low density suburbs) had an average March minimum of 18.5, 1.1 above its old record at the current site but equalling its 1956 record at the old one (records since 1929 with a few gaps).

Interesting stats Steve.
These cooler nights are so much more conducive to getting a nights sleep.
Another brief shower.

Goodness me it's cold tonight, 11.6C and dew everywhere. A tiny bit of very chilly wind too. Great for sleeping though like Knot said, but gone are the days where going out at night is a shorts and t-shirt affair.

Even today with full sunshine felt rather cool in the wind. I'm still so accustomed to summer, as low 20's in winter would be regarded as warm.
