Definitely feels like the dry season now. Cool nights, day temps around 27-29, Low humidity and wind already gusting to 30km/hr at 9am.
Irrigation that I move about all laid out again. Sprinklers are going in the goats paddock. Going to shift them to the dry season paddock next week.
Veggie patch being tidied up and have planted out some tomatoes which are already flowering, got a head start this year growing seed in pots in March.
Just need to start the Far North Queensland Dry Season Gardening Thread now. smile

Yup, we got those gusty winds too. Not looking forward to the whirlwinds though. Once so fascinating, now just a very dusty nuisance.

Do you breed the goats for food Simmo, or keep them lactating for the milk ?

Yep ,feels like dry season weather and the synoptic charts are showing the usual dry procession of horrible highs across the country, bringing the endless Trade winds...

Agree Hickory, Goat is very tasty. Can't eat mine though as they are definitely my babies lol.
I have 4 girls all up which are dairy goats, Nubians, 2 which are being milked. I am starting to let them dry up now as I plan to breed again soon. The other 2 are the kids from last year and they will be bred for the first time this year. Hopefully they will be good milkers also.
Any boys are wethered and sold on, generally for meat.

I have never tried goat, apparently its good but it is difficult to eat things you bred and have an affection for.
Did you get the milking goats because of an allergy to cows milk Simmo?
Feels like an autumn here - funny how I try to relate a southern season to life up here. But, after autumn down south, comes the long cold and wet winter - don't miss that!
But, it is cool at night here which is wonderful.

It tastes a lot like lamb, Kowree.
That getting attached to animals thing must be more a womans reasoning. Dad would always bring home a piglet about once a year and we would feed it up to eat. They followed you around the farm like a pet dog. Mum always had a name for them too.
She would get the s**ts with dad when he said it was time to kill it. She would cook it, (begrudgingly), for the rest of us, but refused to have even one bite of it !

Lovely pics Ron and Scott!

Was a mostly wet, cool and overcast Easter at Bilyana, with the Sun only really coming out yesterday.

Hope everyone had a relaxing break.

Great pics Scott and RF.

I agree goat is similar to lamb but it does not have that fatty taste that people don't like. I have friends that hate lamb and love goat.

No milk allergy. Just seamed like an smaller, easier animal to handle than a cow when you are starting off and have no experience with livestock.
I have a 9 month old Jersey calf, got her as a 3 day old. She is the most beautiful animal in the world. Still about 18 months away from getting milk from her though.
A couple of pics of me having cuddles with her. She rests her head on your body and can lay like that for ages.

Oh and weather wise. Beautiful dry season days at the moment. Winds have lightened up again which is nice. Looking like April is going to be well below average.
