Discussion continues here.

Nice day here, don't think it got over 32 or 33 degrees. Light streaky cloud in places. Dry, no sign of rain. frown

In townsville at the moment. Nice cool night and not much humidity around. Bit windy too.
Looks like it will be a bit windy everywhere for the next week. Yay the south easterlies have returned. 😟

Does anyone know if the resort, or someone on Fitzroy Is keep rainfall records ?.
BoM doesn't appear to have anything at all there.

Watching the radar, during moist SE'erlies shows how much rain they, and Cape Grafton get that doesn't make it over the inlet.

At 2.20am a blast of wind and rain woke us up and we scrambled to put up the heavy drapes around the verandah then went back to sleep without the cold spray. Just got up and see on Qld observations a 67km blast hit Low Isle at 2.10am. Rather satisfying to see the coincidence, though it would have been attenuated over land.

Well, I can't complain about lack of rain on the beaches tonight.
Too late (early) to check the nylex now. Should be 35mm-40 mm at a guess.

Yes, good guess. Just under 40mm at Kewarra. Nice and cool, so different to the last few weeks.

9mm for the last 2 days..

Its amazing how much better you Cairns guys and particularly Daintree/Mossman guys do with these SE showers....

Is it always like that or have I just noticed it more the last year or so...?..

I realize that we usually don't quite get as strong a wind during these periods....I wonder if that's it..?

We certainly need some more rain..What started as such a promising wet back in January is just fizzling to an miserable end..

(Hope not another double post, internet keeps cutting out for the last few days.)

Last four days has been 7mm, 58mm, 7mm and 36mm.
Seems more reliable here, Scott, I always breathe a sigh of relief when the SE's kick in, some breeze, some rain, cooler and lotsa working time outside.
Although, right now quite windy and rather frequent showers with it so staying indoors, been drenched once today just going down to his shed to check how he's doing fixing my rock tumbler and mini drill press. smile
Am delighted to see the beaucarnea flowering, ponytail palm, for the first time, I planted it around 30 years ago from a little potplant.

Ronfishes, it's about ten feet tall with about 3 feet of plume above. Had I only known, seeing from images online of others, I wish I'd planted many more. Supposedly it should bloom every year now. I knew there was a reason I never sold this place...

That bad a day, huh, Ron? smile But then I get seasick easily - have patience.

Still blustery, still drippy.

Pretty nice weather here now too. No rain of course, not even a hint, even with lovely big puffy clouds floating this way.

I'll start whinging myself, when the winds have dried the grass, and start picking up dead grass, grit and miniscule pebbles, and rotating it all into my house in the form of whirly winds. The thing I like least about the dry season.

just tipped out 70 on the dot. Quite impressive. Actually it feels more like the effect of a trough moving onshore than the effect of SE stream showers

After fearing a near drought behind Debbie we are seemingly blessed with make-up rain smile

Drove back from Townsville today and there was loads of water about starting from just south of Ingham. Was surprised to see so much water pouring out the cane fields at Ingham when barely a drop fell in Townsville apart from one random cell. Also the bridge was closed, from flooding I assume, at south Johnston RD bridge. The bugger was they did not have a sign up at the turn off on the Highway, so you drove all the way there only to have to go all the way back.

Got home to a huge 8mm in the gauge for 3 days. At least it will keep the grass green a little longer. Last year the grass was all but dead by this time.

Looks like my low DP readings for the past week are due to a sensor issue. I have not pulled my WS apart yet to see if there is something clogging it up. Looked online and it seems that you do need to replace the temp/humidity sensor more regularly in a humid environment. Current DP is -38c

I'll second that Scott.
I call it pommy rain. I worked in pommyland for a year as a young bloke and the drizzly rain most of the time just about drove me nuts. It would rain all day and maybe 4mm.
Either rain properly or wall to wall blue sky and sunshine for me.

Yes 140mm over the past two days - consistent across the coastal region. Some more tonight and tomorrow it seems.

Nice, steady rain this afternoon here in the city, 6mm so far in the gauge.

We should see reasonable shower activity in some places over the next couple of days before it all moves to our north. Sunday onwards looks dry for a few days!

Well, the dove orchid predictions were just about right - it did rain on the 8th day but maybe it was going to anyway. I'm not going to advise the BOM on the strength of it but will take note when it flowers next.
So, 71mm for last four days - short sharp showers, quite nice really.

Do I dare say I'm already sick of this windy rain. 57mm and the begonias and impatients are rotting in their roots. Lifted and potted the ramains hoping to avoid restocking from Bunnings at $10 each colour.

Over these SE'lys already. Have recorded rain 7 days this month for a whooping 8.6mm. Really windy night last night too, kept waking me up with the noise from the big trees. Not a breath now.

Looks like that is it for 8/9 months. frown

Back from Airlie/ Proserpine. Now have seen what a Cat4 cyclone can do. Nothing but praise for the people of Proserpine, at other cyclone responses I have gone to a lot of people have a " it's all about me" attitude, in Proserpine it was an " all about community/ others" attitude. Absolute privilege to help them out.

No winds out here, only noticed them starting around Lappa last Thursday on the way to Cairns. Glad we're not getting anything more than our lovely Chillagoe breeze at the moment.
Days are perfect 30-33 and nights down to 19-ish in the early morning. Clear skies frown Good for the observatory though.

So there's TC Cook over east, not coming our way. Looks like Vanuatu is right under it.

Wouldn't say that just yet DU. Hopefully, that low up near the Solomons tracks close enough to the coast later in the week to enhance our rainfall along the NTC.

Yes, I'm odd. Not looking forward to another 6 months like today lol.
At least the washing dries quickly, I don't have to pay for mowing, but I have to water the plants at least every 2 days if not daily.

Noticed that too hickory. There are inconsistencies with the BOM forecast rainfall map and the rain forecast on their detailed forecast for the area. Hopefully tomorrow all the forecasts will be saying wet!!!! smile

I would just like to know - how come I - a Southerner used to long cold winters and now ensconced in Tropicana, put a jumper on this morning but it is 25 degrees?
Which has me in a mental state of worry - driving down to Victoria to see the kiddies (they are actually in their mid thirties, adults I suppose, which makes me very adulty) and then onto my partners navy reunion at CANBERRA of all places considered frosty....how will I cope? The time frame is the beginning of May.
No orchids flowering here scott12 apart from a nativey type one with small yellow flowers - is this considered portentous in the scheme of things?

The ants seem to have disappeared. No idea where their homes are now. :))

Felt like rain yesterday afternoon, and feels like it now. Wishful thinking.

Not sure I'd like to be in NZ right now, but I'm sure it will be interesting.

Edit: a 3 blanket night last night, and I've had jeans on all day today.

I have noticed the ants are erecting their untidy little mounds all over the lawn which makes mowing bumpy but hey, they were here first, so must be mindful - will still run over them though.
The orchid - it is an untidy mass of coarse large leaves - I got a piece off a tree thieved from the neighbours paddock. The spray is about 30cm long and the flowers are minute (quarter of the size of my small fingernail) and basically yellow with orange dots on the petals.
I should do a creek crossing and trespass through the cattle paddock again to check out the parent. A bit of research done and the closest I can come at is the Dendrobium discolor, but the flowers are so midgety. I doubt if an orchid fancier would fancy it really.

Definitely feels like the dry season now. Cool nights, day temps around 27-29, Low humidity and wind already gusting to 30km/hr at 9am.
Irrigation that I move about all laid out again. Sprinklers are going in the goats paddock. Going to shift them to the dry season paddock next week.
Veggie patch being tidied up and have planted out some tomatoes which are already flowering, got a head start this year growing seed in pots in March.
Just need to start the Far North Queensland Dry Season Gardening Thread now. smile

Yup, we got those gusty winds too. Not looking forward to the whirlwinds though. Once so fascinating, now just a very dusty nuisance.

Do you breed the goats for food Simmo, or keep them lactating for the milk ?

Agree Hickory, Goat is very tasty. Can't eat mine though as they are definitely my babies lol.
I have 4 girls all up which are dairy goats, Nubians, 2 which are being milked. I am starting to let them dry up now as I plan to breed again soon. The other 2 are the kids from last year and they will be bred for the first time this year. Hopefully they will be good milkers also.
Any boys are wethered and sold on, generally for meat.

I have never tried goat, apparently its good but it is difficult to eat things you bred and have an affection for.
Did you get the milking goats because of an allergy to cows milk Simmo?
Feels like an autumn here - funny how I try to relate a southern season to life up here. But, after autumn down south, comes the long cold and wet winter - don't miss that!
But, it is cool at night here which is wonderful.

It tastes a lot like lamb, Kowree.
That getting attached to animals thing must be more a womans reasoning. Dad would always bring home a piglet about once a year and we would feed it up to eat. They followed you around the farm like a pet dog. Mum always had a name for them too.
She would get the s**ts with dad when he said it was time to kill it. She would cook it, (begrudgingly), for the rest of us, but refused to have even one bite of it !

Lovely pics Ron and Scott!

Was a mostly wet, cool and overcast Easter at Bilyana, with the Sun only really coming out yesterday.

Hope everyone had a relaxing break.

Great pics Scott and RF.

I agree goat is similar to lamb but it does not have that fatty taste that people don't like. I have friends that hate lamb and love goat.

No milk allergy. Just seamed like an smaller, easier animal to handle than a cow when you are starting off and have no experience with livestock.
I have a 9 month old Jersey calf, got her as a 3 day old. She is the most beautiful animal in the world. Still about 18 months away from getting milk from her though.
A couple of pics of me having cuddles with her. She rests her head on your body and can lay like that for ages.

Pretty blustery down this way this way too 28...some showers early this morning but fine and coolish now..

Ron was that you playing silly bugga's on the croc trap at Gordonvale the other day..?

Simmo ,they are the nicest breed of milker for sure and being smaller makes them easier to handle as well...I have very fond childhood memories of getting up at the crack of dawn to help my Grandad milk his little jersey on their farm....nothing quite like a glass of fresh ,warm real milk....

Hahaha cheers guys. She sure is a cutie.

Can't wait to start milking her Scott. I think she will be real easy to milk too as have gotten her use to her udder being touched. Every morning I go out and put some homemade insect repellent on her and she stands there not moving a muscle till I have finished. Hoping she will be able to be milked in the paddock.

Really need some rain again soon. Things will start browning off if we don't. A couple of 10-20mm days before the end of the month would be nice.

Ron, I don't even want to think of the breeze, hammering through for 6 months. At the moment it's quite pleasant as the vegetation (grass & weeds) is still relatively green and not much dust, yet. I dread the willy-willy season. Hoping the few small shrubs at the bottom fence might be big enough to give them a hiccup at least.

According to Bill O'Connor from BOM on the ABC a few days ago, sometimes you get 50-60 knot winds at upper levels ( I seem to remember 500-1,000 ft but dont quote me) and you get "mixing" down to sea level, hence strong gusts out of nowhere

The days of many showers it seems - a bit of guts in some of them

Yes I think I heard along the same lines, mixing occurs more at some times than others. Something like that.

Pretty cool today, max 27c or so but most of the day around 24c.

Blowing a gale west of Mareeba and out west past Lappa.
By the time I got onto the gravel road there wasn't enough wind to blow the dust away.
Winds at Chillagoe are just intermittent breezes in comparison.

Yes, Dry Season, with those horrible winds.
Sky's so clear sunrises/sunsets are very quiet & unspectacular.

Down and back to Cairns today, Bunyip, it was very still waters and barely the air stirring - as you say, magnificent.
A few out in boats but not as many as I expected given the temptation.
I suspect my extra falls are the directly to me streams that fade fast over land.

Not so wet in gvale pogo..enough to not have to water the vegies just yet. I must say living closer to the bush now there is a voracious band of pests that enjoy pretty much everythig in the veggie patch.

About 20c this morning up here, heading from Kurramine to Chillagoe on the weekend, might chuck in my thick jumper smile

I find the fine mesh chicken wire works well for keeping things out, you can make small cages to slip over the top of your veggies.

10.7c this morning. Did not have mornings this cold until June last year.

Chance of things getting a little wet, maybe, in about 10 or so days time. Another 60mm May event like last year would be nice but a long way off!!

Very slowly warming up.
Haven't really had proper cold weather since 2011. Wouldn't mind having a pretend winter.

Yeah, the Coral Sea "might" have one last kick in it. GFS & EC are starting to show signs of a tropical disturbance.

It was 18 out here hickory, about 1am.

12.4 at 7am.

Still only 14. No way I'm getting out of my cosy bed yet.

Wonder if this is just a cold snap, or whether the mornings will continue to be this cold til August.

A very chilly 8.8c this morning. Very early start to these cold temps. Have uggies, trackies and a hoody on. Might see some frosts again this year.

That is definitely a bit on the nippy side Simmo.
Glad it's not quite that cold yet out here.

Looking forward to some cold weather, including some cold days, but I still wouldn't go south to get it...lol.

Recorded rain on 10 days for 9.6mm. 7.2mm fell in 2 days then all other days were either 0.2mm or 0.4mm from drizzle during the day.
Things are still green though which is nice. Some places are just starting to brown off a bit but compared to last year it is still lush. Was completely brown by the second week of April last year.
Hopefully we get a few mm over the next week or so.

Stayed at Woodlei8gh Sat night, very little in the way of observations between Georgetown and Palmerville -- guess around 8c. Bloody freezing. Sun night at Chillagoe much warmer. Not a cloud seen until Monday.
