Hey g'day gang! Bula. smile

New thread for the next upcoming event, so here we go.

The models and charts are more or less in agreement that a potentially major winter storm is heading our way this coming weekend and early next week!

The next few days should be a continuation of the Indian Summer that Victoria's been enjoy as high pressure moves through. Winds then swing around into a warm/hot northerly airflow in coming days as a mighty Antarctic cold front breaks free from an enormous, deepening low pressure system on the move in the Southern Ocean, then charges northbound towards Southern Australia and then interacts with a trough coming down from the northwest to form a possible cut-off low/ECL on Sunday into early next week. smile

For tomorrow (Thursday)...

Fine apart from smoke haze, mainly across the south and east. Mild to warm and mostly sunny with light to moderate northerly winds and afternoon coastal seabreezes. Forecast tops of 26C for Melbourne and 28C for Mildura.

For Friday...

Fine apart from morning fog in Gippsland, and areas of smoke haze. Continuing mild to warm and mostly sunny with light to moderate northerly winds and afternoon seabreezes. Forecast tops of 27C for Melbourne and 29C for Mildura.

For Saturday...

Fine and sunny at first, then cloud increasing with showers and possible thunderstorms developing across the Western districts then spreading eastwards. Warm to hot with moderate to fresh northwest/northerly winds shifting cooler westerly from the west. Forecast tops of 27C for Melbourne and 32C for Mildura.

For Sunday...

Showers (maybe storms and hail?) throughout, clearing from the Northwest/Mallee region during the afternoon. Snowfalls down to 1200m. Cool with fresh to strong, gusty southwesterly winds spreading throughout. Forecast tops of 19C for Melbourne and 20C for Mildura.

Have a good one guys! Looking forward to this event, but for now I'll hang onto this beautiful weather. wink

Cheers Doogasnow! smile

Looks like a great system coming up, and my side of Melbourne -
the Dandenong Ranges area - should really benefit with the "bay effect" coming into play; could be some very juicy, beefy heavy coldie shower and thunderstorm action with hail on Sunday! A storm or two would be also be a nice surprise for Saturday when the pre-frontal trough moves in. Hoping for upwards of 25-30mm of rain for this event. smile

Reached a warm top of 28.8C here in Belgrave today. The day got off to a lousy start; northeast winds blew smoke down into Melbourne from burn-off activity in the Central Highlands and Alpine region, and it was literally raining ash until lunchtime, when winds finally turned more towards the northwest. Otherwise, a mostly sunny day. smile

There's been a burn-off around Cardinia Reservoir over the past two days, which left an impressive smoke plume topped off with pyrocumulus to our east! smile

At the last check around two hours ago it was about 17C.

Overnight low of 15.8C, currently around 21C and sunny. More horrible smoke haze this morning, but thankfully the northerly wind is kicking up, so hopefully it'll clear in coming hours. smile

Reached a warm top of 27.8C here in Belgrave today, and at the last check it was around 25C. smile

Mostly sunny, although high cloud began arriving from the west towards midday while I was down in Boronia. Also the usual fair-weather cumulus.

Northerlies freshened up throughout the day and finally cleared the horrid smoke, even though it still looked somewhat hazy towards the northern horizon when I finished up at work after 3pm.

Barometric pressure down to 1020hPa, having peaked at 1025hPa last night.

Flood watches now out for Melbourne and Gippsland. Could turn nasty on Sunday! eek

Forgot to add this to my last post, but my area in Belgrave looks likely to accumulate up to 80mm of rain by the time this event is done and dusted, of which around 25-70mm is expected on Sunday alone! Yarra Glen is currently anticipating around 100mm in total, with 30-90mm for Sunday. Time will tell if it comes off, but if it comes off then could be some serious flooding about. eek

Skies have cleared now, and it's getting darker and cooler. Currently around 21C

Sunday a possible asf but Monday looking the bigger wet according to what I could find today.

It will all be handy, especially while we have some ground warmth left and experiencing mid 20's days.

Re floods, some big catchment rain forecasts however recent reasonable falls didn't rate a trickle lower down as not much run off and lots of holes in the river bed to fill before it gets down here.

All depends how fast it comes down I guess.

Good pics P, thanks!

Know someone at Pambula Beach from today, advised them to take a 'brolly grin .

GFS is probably giving a better local (NthGipp) rainfall coverage than a gappy ACCESS at the mo'.

Either way, when it hits the ground is will all be very handy.

Overnight low of 19.0C, at the last check it was around 29C here in Belgrave. Warm, almost hot, and mostly sunny with gusty northerly winds; most of the smoke has clear now. smile

The radar, satellite and lightning tracker are coming alive across Victoria, check out those storms flaring away along the incoming trough from the Surf Coast and Cape Otway all the way back northwest to the Western Plains! They should strike Melbourne in coming hours. smile

The cold front is on the move in the Southern Ocean, still on a trajectory towards Southeastern Australia; expect it to burst upon Victoria sometime tonight. ACCESS and GFS both still anticipating a deep cut-off low to develop over the next 24 hours in Bass Strait.

Reached a lovely warm top of 29.6C here in Belgrave today, oh so close to the magic 30C mark! smile

Currently around 28C. Still pleasant outside, although it is getting cloudier and the breeze is kicking up a bit.

Just viewing the Elwood Sailing Club webcams, it looks dark out over the bay, and there's a shelfie forming! Tonnes of lightning in this impending storm front, which should strike Melbourne over the next hour! My fingers are twitching to use the camera haha. =D

Good storm at Frankston earlier too by a family report.

This storm band looks to be slow, and near provides all of Vic with a storm given the extent of its NW-SE slant from N of the Murray to near-Tassie!

29.4C here today in varying breezes, now dark to our W quadrant.

Time to fire the BBQ up and watch whatever we get from this first pre-frontal band evolve smile

GFS and AccR agree on a similar wet outcome for S VIc that has been consistently progged for days now:

The pattern continues, Movement from the NW, gets closer to the metro boundary, disappears and reopens when it is around Frankston.

Great shots Ruckle! smile

What a day it's been, here's my report! smile

The leading edge of the storm front moved into the Belgrave just after 4pm; amid the gathering darkness an impressive shelf cloud, shaped almost like a tidal wave, came racing in! smile

The shelfie swept overhead at 4:17pm, accompanied by a surge of colder, blustery southwest winds. And it got incredibly dark. Minutes later, the thunder started up, and a blinding lightning flash sent me rushing for shelter!

It took over an hour for the main storm to actually hit us. On radar, numerous intense cells kept slipping past us, dissipating before reaching, or forming to our east/southeast; we just missed being under a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for damaging winds and large hailstones. During this time, all we got was intermittent bursts of thundery rain with the occasional burst of wind and sporadic flashes of lightning. The sky was very dark with turbulence galore and isolated rotation, and plenty of scud below. poke

At about 5:40pm, the main thunderstorm action FINALLY moved in! Very little wind, but had around 20 minutes of moderately heavy rainfall, along with thunder and lightning on average once or twice a minute or so. At the height of the storm, we had two blinding, heart-stopping,dangerously-close CG lightning strikes, followed by defeaning thunder, roughly 5 minutes apart!! =D

The storm cleared off by around 6:15pm.

Collected 4.2mm of rain during the storm's passage, with the peak observed rainfall rate being 7.9mm/hr. The temperature dropped from 25.5C just before the storm and associated gust front arrived after 4pm, to 14.5C around 7:30pm.

At the last check, the temperature had risen back up around 17C. Further showers are moving through Melbourne atm.

Here's a few pics I took of the shelf cloud after 4pm:

Goodness! It's turned very stormy here over the past hour or so!

The barometric pressure has now plummeted to 1009hPa, and it's become very windy. The temperature has continued spiking, currently around 19C.

Had some further showers come through this evening, mostly the remnants of the thunderstorms that developed out west behind the main storm front that came through this arvo. An additional 1.1mm of rain collected, so 5.3mm in total for this event so far.

Wild morning here with about 1mm in the gauge and 18C.

Blustery N/W winds rattling the house and dark skies racing about.

CG to within 5 or 6 km's last night, the odd strike still happening in the Alpine area, nothing close.

Glad rain is on the way, be plenty of fires up there.

Crazy conditions out there! crazy

It was a balmy night, with a "high" of 19.0C. Then I got woken up at 6:15am by an hour-long line of thunderstorms, complete with blustery winds, thunder, lightning, and torrential rain! The rain sounded like hail at times BTW. The thunder, which was loud at times, finally subsided into the distance just after 8am, and I was able to go back to sleep! smile

Been very windy since then, and now the front is moving through.

The "pre-9am" minimum here in Belgrave is 13.4C, but after rising back up a few notches afterwards it has now plummeted, currently around 12C and still falling!

My lowest barometric pressure reading was 1003hPa, now it's back to 1005hPa.

Collected another 6.3mm of rain from this morning's surprise storm, with the peak rainfall rate being 15.7mm/hr. 11.6mm in total in the 24 hours to 9am. A good start for this event! smile

Still overcast out there, and the next round of showers is arriving from the northwest.

Two more waves of heavy rainfall came through since my last post! The first at about 11am for around 20 minutes, the second at 1pm for about 45 minutes! The longer-lasting second wave was much more intense, and accompanied by yet another thunderstorm! =D

It was sunny for about 30 minutes around lunchtime, then it got very dark, then came heavy rain and thunder, but no visible lightning. Peak rainfall rate during the storm was 5.3mm/hr. smile

The temperature managed to climb towards 15C when the sun came out, but otherwise it's been around 10-12C for most of the afternoon. Currently showing 10.1C.

Another 5.3mm of rain collected since 9am; more showers arriving now, and the worst of the weather hasn't even hit yet! One huge "wrap-around" rainband flooding into Melbourne on radar. eek

Barometer showing 1003hPa. If Windyty.com and Ventusky.com are anything to go by, this low could come swinging north straight into the Melbourne area (or somewhere down towards Phillip Island and Wilsons Promontory) tonight!

Since the heavier rain and wind started an hour or so ago the temp has risen here, guess the coldest uppers are moving on and maybe some Bass Strait in April air is making its way up. Got down to 5.8c at 315pm, now 6.6c and pretty breezy.

LOL at eastern burbs - practically never rains there! poke Long way to go with this event.

Heavy rain when thru' Maffra round 1115hrs. Still 16C.

Good snaps ASF.

We had a grazing lazy storm last night, and a ripper late morning to provide a 10mm start to this thread.

The SatIR shows the cold air pool that crossed Mt Gambier heading NE'wards earlier today seems to be tracking near Wagga Wagga with some remnant ENE'ly momentum remaining. I greedily hope it can end up NE'wards enough to encourage the recently formed low level centre over King Island to track towards Merimbula.

Plenty of room left in the gauge here too Samboz. But, who knows, another 60mm in there by the end of Monday? Couple of sharp showers amounting to about 5mm here today. Also plenty of sun. Radar around Melbourne pretty good atm (25mm so far at Ballarat).

To my fellow Gippslander's, I'm certainly no expert, but to me, it seems like the rain blobs that have just recently formed in Bass Straight (near our coast between Seaspray and Bairnsdale) "could" potentially be the early formation of SE'ly "wrap-around" south-easterly showers that may soon reverse back up into Gippsland?

Stuck in "the eye of the storm", with even the 'bay effect' being switched off... for the moment. poke

But 20.0mm of rain in total for this event so far here in Belgrave, with 14.7mm since 9am. Not bad! smile

Very little wind, still waiting for the anticipated gales to arrive. And hoping that "wrap-around" can shift northeast and deluge my area overnight; had some distant thunder and lightning to our southwest about 30 minutes ago... from all the way down on the Surf Coast/Cape Otway region! Also a couple of planes flying very low overhead as they begin their descent into Melbourne Airport. smile

Barometric pressure managed to dip down to 1002hPa earlier, now it's 1003hPa.

Temperature currently 7.1C, having nudged 6.9C a short while ago, so it is cold out there! Already it's my coldest night for the year so far, but still a long way to go before it beats my coldest April minimum of 4.4C, set on April 20th 2015. poke crazy eek

36 mm, all day around the back of Geelong and on and off, but the last couple of hours has not let up and real rain. I can see geelong hospital from my place (700 m) up the road, today I couldn't even see the flickering of the helicopter pad. Cloud so low I might go down to the Barwon River, should be good numbers considering the rainfall up the road, like to see Inverleigh levels. Otways copping it west between Colac and Moriac through to Meredith all areas that really need the rain. Low lying also, glad I have the day of tomorrow might go check it out, just remember if it's flooded forget it. still pumping even as I write.

Getting hammered here in Tarneit. Pity my rain gauge was playing up this evening. If i was to guess I would say getting close to 40mm now based on other PWS. Still coming down, heaviest consistent rain in years.

geez... pretty tough logging onto the radar screen every so often to see areas no further than an hours drive west being hammered for hours on end whilst we have only had the odd shower since late afternoon here. Fair enough though, considering we generally win out in rain events.

Don't mind the look of the sat loop atm however... might get something in the SE suburbs yet

The big wrap is beginning

Watch out Gippy tons of wrap around exploding in BS and moving W NW then N NE

Big in W Melb which is great they always miss out 50-70mm for many odd 100mm likley too.

Enjoy

Nice steady rain, not a lot of run off here although it's raining heavier in the high country just to the north. Mt Moornapa has 27.6mm and home around 20mm.

Very little wind, not that cold either with 13C.

Our forecast for the rest of the week 19C tomorrow and low 20"s to Sunday @ 24C, sounds good.

So much for the 50-100mm falls anticipated for my area, but glad to see that the normally drier areas west of Melbourne got a drenching! smile

The wrap-around largely missed us last night, although we managed another 4.3mm of rain, bringing the 9am total to 12.7mm and the event total to 24.3mm. Not bad at all! smile

Hardly much wind that I know of last night as well, and no thunderstorms either. poke

Overnight low of 6.4C, currently around 13C. Cloudy and damp outside.

Emptied 26.5mm for the event an hour ago, very nice drop of rain and steadying off now as it all heads E.

Guessing - but rainfall figures for the south side river catchments probably won't be enough to cause to much grief for NthGipp.

Some very good falls round the event, our fire is almost lit for the first time this year, probably tonight.

Currently 15C and intermittent showers.

Email from home, gauge emptied and my fantastic event total is exactly 79.0mm so far. Still plenty of drizzle around so might edge up higher.

Models did great, as Petros said, picked the system way out then in last 24-48 hours switched correctly the heaviest rain from east of Melbourne to N and W of town. Details are rarely right further out than that.

Reached a top of only 14.2C here in Belgrave today, my coldest day for the year so far, and also my first day with a high of less than 15C for the year so far! eek

While not my coldest April day ever (the current record still belongs to April 25th 2015, with a high of only 14.0C), this is the earliest in the year/season I've ever recorded a high below 15C.

My last day with a high below 15C was 171 days (or 5 months, 20 days) ago on October 22nd last year, with a top of only 13.0C.

Anyway, going back to today...

No sunshine whatsoever, and virtually no further rainfall either! Only a stubborn low overcast. Thankfully there was also wind, but this weather is depressing. frown

Still only around 12C. Looking forward to the much warmer weather returning in coming days, in time for Easter! smile

Great stuff Ruckle.

I tipped out 14mm to add to yesterdays storm-acquired 10mm. Lovely drop.

We have the fire going here tonight! - albeit at "only 16c".

10cm soil temp here was pushing 17C on Saturday - ....wont see that again till next November eh?

Home, temp is currently 8.4c after a high of only 9.7c! There were lakes in the forest floor around Macedon which I could see from the train. Water everywhere - great work Huey.

Nice one ThunderBob! smile

Overnight low of 10.3C, reached a top of 22.4C here in Belgrave this arvo. Much warmer and sunnier than yesterday, and winds remained light! Perfect for being out in Mulgrave at lunchtime and later at Boronia. smile

Still a pleasant 19C here at home atm.

Great to hear of the good rainfalls, 63mm tb " grin " sets things up for quite a while !!

Our tanks are about 70-80% full, grass is growing quickly, weather mild, all year round like this would be OK in this camp.

funny reading a few acknowledge the much needed rain to the west of the cbd and how we often miss out. after the storms had died just as they were arriving on saturday i didnt hold much hope for the rain. somehow 40mm fell over the weekend.

Yes like it was at your end out Gippy way Samboz it was a beautiful day here in metropolitan Melbourne! Reached a top of 23.9C here in Belgrave, with plenty of warm sunshine and cooling breezes. Pity about the smoke haze affecting my sinus, but ah well! Still a great arvo down in Boronia. smile

Currently around 14C and a clear, calm, moonlit night. Wondering if there'll be some fog in the morning?

I forgot to mention that yesterday the clouds were just low enough to cling to the ridge of the Yarra Ranges to the northeast, but not to the Dandenong Ranges, Toolangi State Forest, and Kinglake areas.

Felt like late summer of 27c no winter clothes yet.

Hate backburn make smelly skies hazy.

Looks like will be more overage rain in next few days.
