The first real taste of winter will be coming up late this weekend.

Yr.no is predicting up to 30cm of snow for Perisher on Sunday night into Monday (assuming that 1mm of rain = approx. 1cm of snow) and even about 15cm for Thredbo Village. GFS is also going for a lot of precip, likewise with ACCESS.

As I said in the other thread, a few cm of snow at places like Shooters Hill in the CT's is certainly possible in the early hours of Monday morning.

On the coast it's likely to be very windy with a low out to sea showing up on AXS and GFS. As winds turn more southerly on Monday arvo, there will be a few days of showers and breezy conditions as well.

It certainly looks like a significant change, with the BOM firecasting snow above 1200 metres in the Southern Ranges on Sunday night / Monday morning. Meteye shows a extensive snow over the Southern ranges, but no stray pixels further North.

Monday looks like the coolest day in Sydney for a while, with a forecast of 12 to 20.

The following week looks cool and showery on GFS, cooler than the BOM's forecast. The BOM seems to think that the coast will be under high pressure by Thursday. We shall see. We need to stop the high from ridging along the Southern edge of the Tasman...

Looks like the proceeding trough is being fed from the NW cyclonic action.
This low looks pretty nasty. Not overly cold, but very very moist. I'm thinking 30cm's plus on the main range

Even though that seems to be an optimistic forecast, I tend to agree.
Thredbo forecast going for -3/3 degrees on Monday, with 15-40mm predicted and it should almost all be snow. Winds are going to pack a punch too.

Picture perfect autumn day today by the look of it so far, as was yesterday, after a cool start. (love those higher diurnal ranges in autumn and spring with cool nights to warm days, we have not have genuine shoulder seasons in recent years).
Back to low 20's tomorrow, but going away tonight for a week, so will (not) miss the return to more rut weather.

Yes Derek, a beautiful day and the warmest for quite a while.
Currently 24.4 degs with a light NW'er blowing.
"Thunderstorm likely" the forecast says.
It should start snowing in the next 4 or 5 hours on the alps.

Was about 26C with breezy northerly and sunny earlier, which is about as pleasant as it gets. In the last half hour, mid level cloud has closed in very quickly. Still rather nice though.

A beautiful warm, DRY, sunny day today with light to moderate NW'ers and temps around 27 across most Sydney sites. It would be nice if we could sneak in a last 30 before the change, but that won't happen.

Cloud is approaching from the West. Camden, Campbelltown and Bellambi, under cloud, are at around 24-25.

Meanwhile in Melbourne it's a 'refreshing' 12.5 degrees. That change packs a punch.

EDIT: nice pictures WR and also Eddy from yesterday.

There's a chain of storms extending along the South coast from Bermagui North to Ulladulla then extending NNW from there past Bowral, Oberon, Bathurst and on past Dubbo to Trangie. That might mark out the front. Orange Airport, apparently behind the front, dropped from 16.3 to 9.9 degrees between 3:30PM and 4:00PM.

EDIT: Thredbo top station is on -1 with precipitation, so it's probably snowing there.

Sitting outside having a beer and looking at the sky here you wouldn't think there is a cold front coming through later on tonight. But today was just an absolute stunning day, although slightly ruined this morning by playing 9 holes of golf, but it was quickly redeemed with an afternoon at the beach, now its beers and a spa!!

Ahhhhh, that's the life Eddy!!

It was the same here an hour ago. Absolutely so sign of the impending front. Warm and sunny.
Then about 10 minutes ago the cloud arrived and now it's really dark. This thing is moving very quickly.

Edit: there we go. Nice long rumble. smile

Starting up here. The wind picked up, although I think the main front is yet to come. There's sheet lighning and thunder to the West. It's been raining lightly for several minutes, with the rate just picking up now.

BOM haven't dropped the ball here, it's been piss weak with maybe a few gusts in the 40-50km/h range and a bit of light rain.... I've seen busters deliver more exciting weather than this.

That was one hell of a blow!!! Incredible storm, I was standing outside facing east and the wind was very strong. Then a complete whiteout and twigs blowing everywhere. I just stood there with my mouth open in disbelief and shock and then went inside for a bit because I was afraid a tree was going to come down. Then it came through in waves after the main wind. Now we have a very decent light show out to sea here in Balgownie.

That was most wind I have ever seen in a storm!!!

Yes CS22, I think that the lower North Shore was in a bit of a gap. It's been basically light to moderate thundery rain here with a bit of wind, which seems to have died down. It's the luck of the draw.

It looks like the front dropped temperatures by about 8-9 degrees, e.g Airport from 25.5 to 17.0 between 6:00 and 6:30 PM.

EDIT: have a look at the 512 km composite radar. It looks like a cold front on the map (apart from the teeth).

EDIT2: have a look at the Sydney doopler as well. There's a lot of red extending NW from the Richmond area.

A large area wouldve been hammered by severe stuff, however a few places only got some mod rain, bit of lightning and wind (like here on the northern beaches where it weakened a bit on approach).

Wowsers
That came through like a rocket.
Was odd in Woonona, we had a balmy teasing storm around 3.30pm.
Wandered down the club. Outside area faces west. You could see the cloud building, yet it seemed to be happening slower than the radar. Then wow. Rain whipping into the windows, branches , leaves getting smashed around. 87kmph gusts..

Anyways , good moisture at Perisher at the moment. It isn't that cold (just on 0) so the 1200m asl snow level from the BOM seems a bit optimistic.

It's wild and windy here tonight right now. Has been very on and off though. 14C and cold westerly, typical winter weather.

Oh and the most amazing clear skies too.

Current temp is 1.7C at Sunny Corner, definitely cold enough for snow accounting for a temp drop that would occur with any precip. Snow down to about 1100-1200m should happen within the next few hours.

11 degrees here with mostly calm conditions, it's still very cold though even without wind. Lots of sunshine but also low stratus cloud from the west is moving in. Winter.

The low looks to be to the south of Gabo Island, and it's flinging up showers to its west and they should hit the Snowy Mtns. Webcams up there look rather nice.

Quite cool this morning, sunny with a bit of a breeze. Some cloud has moved in during the last half hour or so. It got down to 11.7 at OH (coldest since Oct 25) and 10.5 at Olympic Park (coldest since Nov 3). Both are lower than any day in April 2016.

The BOM have backed off on rain for this week with partly cloudy skies and showers on the coastal fringe until Thursday. Easter is looking good (i.e. for city people - sunny and dry).

We had a number of icy showers yesterday evening - some soft hail and some hard enough to bounce on the concrete.

I don't recall a wilder (wind wise) storm here at my place than yesterdays. It was crazy for a while.

Temp drop of 10 degrees in an hour - that's massive.

Heaters on at work this morning - we have not had much time to acclimatise this year

Thought I was going to lose a large eucalypt yesterday - watched it with much concern. Amazing how far they can bend!!!

Reports of brief snow at Shooters Hill.

Real wild night in Wollongong.
Awake for 4 hours listening to roofing iron ripping and bending.
Observations say 20cm of snow at Perisher. Snow at Jindy equestrian centre as well. That happens when the wind is strong enough to blow the weather over from the MR.
Its starting to warm up though, as the low whips around on itself.

Came back from Uni this morning and car was being thrashed around on the freeway. As always, it is windiest here. There wasn't too much wind in Wollongong but gusty and cold. Even a few fine raindrops on the windscreen from a nearly clear sky- must be coming over from the highlands.

Those showers are moving rather quickly towards my area and don't have any signs of fizzling. I still think it will mostly evaporate by the time it gets here- it's amazing how rapidly these types of showers from westerly winds break down into nothing.

We had a light shower a little while ago, it was enough to wet the road. Dropped to 14C but going back up with the return of sunshine. Wind has eased a bit too which is nice.

Gawd almighty a max in the single digits, in April. Wow!! I have a slight suspicion that the max will just tick over into double digits.

We had a max of 19.4c a short while ago and likely to be our top max as well, as this cloud is coming in thick and fast.
Meanwhile Taree just up the road is sitting on 23c!!

The airport still hasn't made 10 degrees today - close at 9.7 but not actually 10.

Ag station might come in slightly warmer - time will tell.

Looks like misty drizzle outside at the moment - very fine.

The best we have managed is 17.8C. It's mostly sunny now and with a jacket on, the conditions are quite tolerable and even rather nice in the last hour or so.

I wonder when the earliest sub-10 degree day has been for Bathurst. I'm eager to find out now.

Our sunny but brisk morning (wind chill) has given way to a steely, grey afternoon with a few spits of rain but not enough to register. It's now dropped back to 15.6 at OH.

The low is clearly visible on the visible satellite picture. It has a distinct 'eye', now about 200 km off Ulladulla and drifting NE'wards.

EDIT: I see that there's a bit of a break in the cloud to the South. Hopefully a bit of sun here later.

This kind of set-up brings some of the coldest days for the Syd metro, a low to the SE (SW wind), enough moisture for a deck of cloud preventing any heating and ofcorse the wind chill. Obs hill 15.7C at 3pm.
If it were July, most areas even on the coast would struggle past 11-12C for a max.

Sometimes you'll get a SW change then another NW band in quick succession over NSW. Those inky days with Nimbostratus clouds locked in just after daybreak. I can recall days in Wollongong that hover around 11 all day. No sun to warm the cockles.

Cold and sunny afternoon here, the breeze certainly has some bite to it. I don't mind it though. Winds are meant to turn more southerly so maybe showers tonight and a lot of wind.

We cracked 10 at about 4.30 today.

That's a winter day for us.

WR - don't reckon too many years at all have had a day with max of 10 in April.

I have the fire lit. It's 14.8 degs.
2 reasons It's cold, and my parents are coming for dinner for Lisa's birthday and they love the fire going.
It really has been a very sudden change into autumn. Thank goodness after the horrible Feb we had.

Heater on, first bath of the season.

Brisk wind , but its not overly cold around mid teens.
Damn its nice though.
Ensembles showing another injection of cold air next Tuesday. I'd imagine the models will start to get excited in a day or two.

Hi weather folk! It's been pretty chilly in Katoomba today. I was outside between 10 and 11 this morning and it was brutal. Felt like mid winter. Took the dogs for a walk around lunchtime and my breath was still visible. Now sitting in front of a roaring fire (we got great ironbark last year, it was almost too beautiful to burn, but no-one is doing ironbark anymore. it's mostly immature gum and casurina. All that beautiful old habitat, up the chimney!). Loving this weather. Can't wait for winter!

Well if the max stays at 10.9, it will be the coldest April day since April 2008, when it was a chilly 8.6- but that was late in the month.

And Sydney Obs Hill (if the max stays at 17.9) has had its earliest sub-18C day since 1999.

PS- Welcome back sou

Yeah the 850 temps were too way warm this afternoon for snow 4 to 6 degrees at 1480 m asl as the air pressure went up... was a weak cold pool with a tonne of moisture.

NAEFS has a cool signal for Australia's "Eastern bulge" for the week after next. That is unusual these days, it's normally warm. Most of Australia is a unshaded, which I think means mixed ('average' being purple).

In warmer months, that pattern means "Easterly" patterns dominate. I'm not sure what it means now. GFS shows a fairly benign pattern in its second week.

NAEFS

In fact the temp warmed late, up to a bit over 11 degrees around 10pm. Then it didn't cool much all night. A strange situation smile

Same here too, 14.5c was my minimum at 10.30pm but by midnight the temp had risen to 17.5 where it stayed that temp pretty well for the rest of the night.

For a day that's currently under 20c and overcast it doesn't feel that cold at all. Now bring on the sunshine!!

Also the same here, 17.9 as a max yesterday but then it warmed up to 20.2C by 9am so we didn't even get a sub 20 day.

Obs Hill actually did retain its maximum of 17.9

Yesterday is the first time in many months I felt cold. Had the day off and packed the esky lid and wetsuit in car and headed to beach. Almost relieved to see it flat.

Not flat this morning however, fresh large swell running parallel to coast.

Yeah its south swell south wind combo. Not very useful

Balmy 22 here , considering the southerly.

North or NE facing beaches would go alright today, eg Bellambi. The swell can still be big there on southerly days.

About 6 last night, heading to about 21 today.

Today was mostly cloudy with some sunny breaks plus occasional light showers and drizzle adding up to a millimeter or two. The showers have picked up this evening and a few decent totals are building in Sydney's East: 9mm since 9:00 at OH and the Airport, up to 29mm on the Northern Beaches. There's been little or none West of about Homebush.

That was my day as well Steve.
I was again working at Woolwich. Not far from you.
Cloudy/sunny morning and then a very dizzily/overcast afternoon.
Some sunny breaks as I headed west to go home, but then it turned scudtherly again during the evening.
A very pleasant 16.7 degs this evening.

Stuck me thumb outside and guess what. It got wet. Must be as the land cools the warmish sea water gives some shower momentum or something.

Getting a bit ridiculous now, never ending rain. I see Obs hill has had 14 rain free days since Feb 24th, given there's precip tomorrow that'll make 36 rain days out of the last 49 (73%), quite incredible.

Bit of light at the end of this tunnel with a few sunny days squeezing in.

Left home at 8.30am with 34.7mm in the gauge, probably be the final figure to 9am. I certainly didn't see 60mm coming before this event started!!

Anyway someone say there is light at the end of the tunnel, it can't come quick enough.

we had 13.5mm from that first band of rain on the low a few days ago, but nothing since. Thats why I never worry too much about port stephens going dry eddy, even in droughts it collects the southerly and can get drenched. Good spot if you like rain! I think you will all get your wish with wishing the rain away. Will probably turn dry with a blocking high now that will last months.

I still want 150mm here. will need an ECL to sort the main dam before next summer. In the meantime though it will be nice to get some sunny weather.

Pretty spot on GringosRain.

And DaveM we have had some decent periods of sun today, just the 0.5mm today. Probably have one or two showers overnight and that will probably be it from this system. Should be a fairly decent weekend coming up!!
