1200 freeze level.
This is going to be a shock.

1200 will take care of all of Thredbo and then some. You'd take that any day of the season!

It's looking very good for Sunday night/Monday morning with 0/-7/-23 (850mb/700mb/500mb) just south of Bathurst, and precipitation now up to 5-10mm on GFS. Should at least be a few cm on Shooters and that's not even counting the orographic lift when the main showers do dry out!!

I think I will make a thread in a few hours.

The official first lighting of the fire for the season is approaching smile

Donzah - nice to have your input this season smile

I too think that weekend after Easter looks a good chance. A very large area of cold air to the south of Oz - but for much of the week an area of high pressure is keeping a lid on it.

I reckon the effectiveness of that high pressure lid will wane around that weekend. That's what I'm hoping anyhow smile

Well the run of wet days continues after some short sharp showers overnight, 3.9mm to 9am.

Overcast this morning with some fine drizzle about.

Partly cloudy here but sunnier on the coast. The beach looked divine earlier this morning, one of the calmest and nicest ocean conditions and the surf was half decent too.

It's sunny with scattered cloud here. The cicadas are going in nearby trees. Not in full-thoated Summer voice but noticable and loud enough to compete with a nearby leaf blower. They must be getting in their last screeching before the season closes in.

Another pleasantly cool night. OH is tracking close to long term seasonal averages for April, about four degrees cooler than the first week of April 2016 (which included two 30+ days, one of which was a new record).

So therefore the shower had lasted only as long as a RED signal in traffic lights, but sufficient to wet everything not in cover.

Aye it was, went for a roll. No real seabreeze and some nice temps.
Wollongong council is trying to mow the grass around the beachside grounds. Pushing mud would be a better description.

Well the arvo has turned out to be quite nice, very little wind, bit of cloud out to the west and warm as well. I was mowing the lawn around lunch and spotted some nice convection offshore but by the time finished and raced up to the beach they had collapsed. Was hoping to see a spout but was not to be.

Nice photo Eddy, little rain curtain is pretty smile

Some friends at Rockley (about 30km south of here) had an hour long hail storm yesterday that left a partial white carpet over their yard.

Nothing here but obviously under the correct cloud you could end up with plenty.

OUR FIRST SHEEP GRAZIERS WARNING OF THE YEAR - Out today for Sunday. Interesting to be out couple of days in advance, just like the old days smile

Yeah nice pic Eddy.

Well today (now yesterday) was fantastic weatherwise. Mostly sunny weather with light NE winds, then in the late afternoon not a cloud in the sky. I was sitting outside doing an assignment and watching the light to the east get more and more pale as the sun lowered. The temperature was ideal, in a perfectly autumnal way.

Thanks DaveM & WR
0.5mm from a light shower around 1am this morning, hopefully that's the last of the onshore showers for a day or two!!
This morning is absolutely stunning, no wind, clear skies and some nice warmth too, pity I'm working.

You sure are a rain magnet Eddy, hasn't rained here in a few days now.

This was the beach looked like yesterday morning: Apologies about the poor quality.

Just had a good look at the spag.
We are in line for some strong frontal activity from Easter on.
LWT has moved into a decent 4 node. Amplification looks pretty much in the bight.
I anticpate some colder than average weather Monday-Tuesday and Thursday- Sunday.

Well, we have been getting a fair few showers the past couple of days, mainly during the night or very early morning, putting a couple of mm in the gauge. But on Monday morning we had just over 15mm in the gauge, whereas where the AWS is located for Singo had received usually 3mm less then us as it is usually the opposite way around. For once we have been getting rain on the northern side of the Hunter smile So the ground is a bit wet for me to mow, but yesterdays' wind has hardened up the surface.

Do you mean the surf or the photos? Surf - yes, photo's - no.

I just cannot believe how flat the ocean is.

Donzah - yes Access and GFS looking at mid week for another change. At this stage the models not showing any tremendous northwards movement but maybe more flakeage on the Snowies and Tassie.

Fair chance the nights out here may step down another couple of degrees after it and indeed within several mornings we may finally get close to our first frost out this way.

The change on Monday dropped our nights into regular single digits as against the endless double digits previously.

Currently we are running around 6 to 8 degree nights, after the next change we may be closer to 5 & 6 with the odd cooler one thrown in.

If we get Easterly quadrant breezes though any step down may be less.

Yeah the ensembles show the first one as a clipper, however the second looks colder. (way out at 240 hrs) -4 to -6 850hpa temps at this stage. Is trending OK .
I don't look at deterministic models much. Usually only EC and AXS-R closer in. Especially in a trans seasonsonal time.

Yes at the moment - GFS is a little more bullish on that one. They are similar enough though that I feel a little bit of interest in it smile

Once that trailing high wanders over, we might get some colder nights behind the change out here.

I do think that this week and next week will turn out to be seen as fairly key weeks in the seasonal progression.

Some of the ski resorts will be starting to look at the calendar more closely - worrying about completing maintenance or new plant etc.

Won't be too many weeks before all tools need to up off the ground on a regular basis.

Even though decent snow on the ground at early June is pretty uncommon - they need to be prepared just in case it actually starts early. A decent late April or May change (even though it will melt) can take a few days out of the programme of works.
