Amazing photo Rigger. While they froze down the South Island, the lower North Island still remains in a State of emergency after all time rainfall and flooding records being broken. Rivers over flowing, Roads blocked, People stranded/evacuated, more here:

Is there a page pete where we can get current temps, a bit like the Aussie AWS pages?

Homer.

-21 at Omarama this morning. I'm pretty sure this is the lowest temperature in NZ since the mid-1990s.

Yes correct. The coldest was in 1903 at Ranfurly with -25.6C

-21 is what MetService is reporting on their Facebook page. Either way it's the coldest in NZ since 1995.

The Ranfurly obs is an interesting one - it only came to light a few years ago when some old records were rediscovered (until then, the NZ record had been regarded as the 1995 value in Ophir, which I think was in the -21s). I was on a WMO committee which was responsible for evaluating its legitmacy, something we had no serious qualms over.

To a much greater extent than Australia, 'record' low temperatures in New Zealand are influenced by many potential cold sites being unsampled (whereas in Australia, we've had - admittedly intermittent - obs from somewhere, Charlotte Pass, which is close to the coldest place imaginable in Australia). I would be pretty confident that there are high alpine valleys which got colder, perhaps much colder, than -21 this morning - and from another perspective, I'd estimate based on 700 hPa temperatures that the one-in-10-year minimum at the summit of Mount Cook would be somewhere around -28 to -30.

While drivers hate it.
There are heaps of reports of cars going into ditches, poles, each other... etc

The owners of the Ski fields are happy plus. Below is the Snow Cam from Treble Cone, Wanaka.

I assume the top picture is Dunedin?

Tara Hills (aka Omarama) barely made it above -10 today, and is plunging again (currently -15.6). Has to be a good chance for something near or below -20 again tonight if it stays calm. Showing the power of inversions in action, Lindis Pass just up the road is at -0.8.

Another bone-chilling start for the Mackenzie Basin Thursday.
MetService said the temperature at Pukaki fell to -15.7C overnight, after having dropped to -19.8C on Tuesday morning, while the temperature at Mt Cook airfield fell to -12.5C overnight.
Parts of Central Otago were also well below freezing early on Thursday, with Alexandra down to -8C and Queenstown showing -6C.
Christchurch was easily the coldest of the major centres, recording -4C.
A good collection of photos here:
Snow Pic of a Freezing Week.

I found these stats in my travels.
Niwa figures showing the 10 lowest temperatures recorded in New Zealand up to Wednesday:

-25.6 1903 Ranfurly, Central Otago
-21.6 1995 Ophir, Central Otago
-21 2015 Omarama
-19.8 2015 Pukaki Aerodrome
-19.7 1943 Ophir, Central Otago
-18.9 1878 Bealey, Canterbury
-18.6 1939 Manorburn Dam, Central Otago
-18.3 1918 Ranfurly, Central Otago
-17.9 1968 Omarama
-17.5 1930 Manorburn Dam, Central Otago

Cheers
Jenny

Haven't seen a minimum reported from Tara Hills this morning - I'm assuming that we'd have heard about it if it was below yesterday's -21.0, but it was -18.8 at 9am so the minimum can't have been too far above -21.

(Incidentally, just to show that there are still some things that even Google doesn't know, if you do a search on Google Maps for "Tara Hills New Zealand", it will take you to a nursing home near San Francisco).

Stopped at Omarama for a feed last sept on hols , and even when its warm that joint is still cold. The size of their firewood sheds are a dead giveaway.
