Welcome David, why don't you let us in on a bit of info about Arkansas, is it one of the "plains" states and I think it's around torando alley or am I wrong?

would love to hear something about your climate and topography. laugh

Hello Tassie Tiger:Well ARK is just to the East of the Plains States and on the very Eastern fringe of Tornado Alley. Since 1950, 960 tornadoes have been reported in Ark.,w/328 total deaths. Mena has had only 2 tornadoes since 1896, the most recent being in Nov. 1993 doing considerable damage but no deaths. I think the surrounding mtns. almost 2700FT(almost 823m)high may shield us. Last yr. our avg.High was 70F(21.1C)avg.Low 49F(9.4C)We're in an area of abundant rainfall, avg. 54.5IN(1,384mm)per year.

Also, on a yearly avg. Mena may top out with a High of 100+F(37.7C+) usually due to a prolonged dry period. Our elevation is 1,177FT(358.8m). Our low may bottom out around 10F(-12.2C). We need to have a massive Arctic cold front to get below zeroF. We also occasionally have ice storms. Because of our topography, any excessive flooding rainfall quickly drains off, with minimal damage. We have had at least 2 instances of over 10IN(254mm)of rain in a day. Will be glad to answer any more questions. C-U Later

david I too live at approx 340 metres a.s.l with a 1270 mountain right behind me. However our climates would vary greatly, Hobart has an average summer max of approx 22 c, avge summer min of say 12 c

Winter max say 11 and winter min about 4.

Hobart is on a large saltwater harbour (mouth of the Derwent river) and Tassie has basically a maritime climate. Our extremes are not very extreme. Negative (C) temps not common at all in Hobart. However the further you get from the water the cooler it gets overnight. On rare ocassions we can get snow to sea level but it is shortlived and rarely settles.

Hello Tassie Tiger:
I think Mena's All-time High was 109F(42.7C)in 1936.all-time Low was -15F(-26.1C)in 1896. Mena was named after a Dutch railroad investors wife. The town is at MP380 on the Kansas City Southern railroad.I(and many others)consider Mena's birthday as August 19, 1896-the date the 1st train came through. There are several Dutch placenames in the city/county. Does Tasmania get hit by Hurricanes/Cyclones?I LOVE SNOW but we have an erratic snow pattern, some yrs. a good amt, most yrs. just flurries. CHEERS!!

Dave, Tassie is too far south for "tropical cyclones" we do however often have low pressure readings below 1000 hpa and severe wind storms although rarely of cyclonic strength. We do receive occassional storm force winds which is a step above gale force. We did have winds a couple of weeks ago with gusts of about 70 knots in Hobart. This is not common but can occur.

Max temp ever for Hobart is about 40.8 and min probably about -2.8 celcius. It only averages about 1.5 days per year of a below 0 min.

We average about 6 days above 30 per annum.

TASSIE TIGER: Mena's altitude(and summertime humidity)conspire to keep us temps. about 5f+lower than surrounding areas. For 2001:High=99F(37.2C)on July 12&22. Low: 5F(-15.0C-record low)on Jan. 3.Rain=69.69IN(1,770.1mm).In summer the westward extension of the Bermuda High grips us in dry/hot weather.Arctic cold fronts can keep the temps. below 32f(0C)for a few consec. days.In 2001, Mena had 65 days of lows at 32F(0C) or lower and 51 days with 90F+(32.2C+) highs.Prevailing winds are either Southerly(warm/moist)or Westerly(warm/dry). What would the most widespread SNOW event in Tasmania be? On Dec. 24,1975 Mena got 12IN(304.8mm)SNOW in 1 day!! GLORIOUS wet, sticky, heavy stuff. Tasmania sounds nice, but the Summers may still be too cool for my arthritis. I like pretty warm(lo humid.)weather, but I'd come there for the SNOW!!

Hello All: Well, we're in the Summer doldrums, highs 85-95F, lows 65-75F with a strong influence of dryness from the westward extension of the Bermuda High. Even so, we have an almost daily 20% chance of a heating/instability shower. We are ruled by the 3H's.(Heat/Haze?Humidity).
Hope ya'll have an eventful Winter smile

G'DAY QUETZALCOATL: Mena is slightly North of 34DEG 34MIN NORTH.(Latitude:slightly East of 94DEG 16MIN WEST). EXPLANATION:My High/Low readings come from Mena's official wx station, radio station KENA.(I sometimes have to use the Mena Info. Line or the AWS at Mena airport). The rain amounts are from the rainguage on my patio. Usually a day will consist only of a morn. low and a daytime high. When cold fronts come through, I get readings from the above mentioned sources. An example of this would be:November 10,1998: the OVERALL HIGH was 68F(20.0C)at 12:01 A.M. the MORN. LOW was 52F(11.1C) the DAY HIGH was 57F(13.8C) at 2P.M.the DAY LOW was 50F(10.0C) at 5:08 P.M.the OVERALL LOW was 34F(1.1C) at 10:20 P.M. Rain=0.80IN(20.3mm)
EXPLANATION OF ABOVE= OVERALL HIGH (the highest temp. reached for date[higher than the daytime high--for me a day starts at 12:01 AM and ends at 11:59PM)DAY HIGH(the highest temp. reached during daylight hours, if temp. falls all day there will be no entry for morn. low--the sunrise temp. will be the day high)DAY LOW(the lowest daytime temp. that is lower than the morn. low)OVERALL LOW(the absolute lowest temp. for the date). The times are approx. time of occurrence;I will start calling the info. line abt. an hour before sunset and every 15MIN or so thereafter to get the day low and use the same procedure to get the overall low. I have an indoor/outdoor digital thermo. that I keep a separate log book of(it's temps. are a little off of what KENA-abt. 1MI away-reports and also has some "glitches".
ABOUT DAILY READINGS:I have to get the day's high the next day on the weather report,KENA also has an exasperating procedure of giving the 24-hour LOW, which may not be the current morning's low. So, instead I think I'll give weekly reports, since I use a calendar for my log book, my weeks go from Sunday-Saturday. I'll soon give you Mena's weather from prev. week. On June 24th, Mom and I will be taking a 10-14 day vacation(holiday).

11- 86F(30.0C) 71F(21.6C) ---
12- 87F(30.5C) 72F(22.2C) ---

The week was dominated by high humidity(which keeps the temps. down) and abundant cloudcover.P.S. My rain readings are from 12:01AM to 11:59PM daily.Temps. may reflect OVERALL HIGH and OVERALL LOW. I also post Mena's monthly totals on the AUS WX List.I will also post it here at the end of every month. For June, I'll have to post the partial June report after I get back from vacation.I only record the sky cond. in my home wx(indoor/outdoor thermo) logbook.RARELY does a day go by that I don't see at least 1 cloud in the sky, so in my logbook I write"Mostly Sunny", because to me, "CLEAR" means COMPLETELY CLEAR. Get back to ya'll soon David Powell

MODERATORS:HELLO: I was wondering if you could put my other weather thread"Any Questions About Arkansas Weather" under THIS topic heading? This would put all under one thread heading.I, through ignorance started the other thread in the LOUNGE.(I thought people might ONLY visit General Weather OR the Lounge).Sorry for my ignorance, and since they're more or less duplicate topics, I would like my other thread added/consolidated under THIS topic heading. THANK YOU! WEATHERZONE ROCKS:)
