A big cold front could FINALLY make things a bit more interesting with our first taste of winter spreading across much of SE Australia behind it.... and just ahead of it, temporarily warmer N to NW winds.

Instability also looks like it could increase somewhat ahead of it but guess we'll have to wait a bit longer to see if there's any thunder potential with it or not.

The accompanying low could also rapidly intensify once it reaches the Tasman Sea, even to the point of bombogenesis with much cooler to colder SW winds surging up its rear flank.

Some graphics below as examples:

Can anyone expand on bombogenesis from an east coast perspective. What factors are used from a forecasting point of view?

Loving the extended stream showers rolling in and back building on the SE trades tonight.
We've had a few mm both last night and tonight.

Interesting charts Ken...I have not heard of bombogenesis before? What is bombogenesis?

For the record, showers on the coast today, quite warm, no wind. Loving Autumn smile

Bombogenesis is when a low or cyclone undergoes rapid intensification. Bombogenesis in Australia tends to apply to ECLs. You need cold uppers and warm lowers with a warm Tasman helping this process, to achieve bombogenesis. It also happens in the Atlantic and Northern Pacific.

Could not ask for more comfortable weather! Need a bit of rain again. Less than a mm so far this month. If we do not receive any rain on Wed with the next front, we might be setting a new record for April. If the wind direction can stay S-SW, we might have some cold mornings behind the front. Looks more like a S-SE wind however which wouid mean milder overnight temps.

Quick question - Do ECLs evolve like TCs? Do they intensify overnight like TCs. Can anyone explain the overnight intensification of TCs? Thanks

A cool, cloud and windy day up here. It only just managed to make it to 20°C and we received 2.4mm of rain this morning.

5.6mm in the 24hrs to 9am this morning from a few onshore showers.

It looks like there may be a little light rain along with the slight chance of a storm here as the frontal system approaches and moves through late on the 25th and into the 26th.

Looks like we will have several days of our first good push of SW winds by mid week. I would not be surprised to see widespread frost on the Southern Downs by late in the week. Not bad for late April.
Little rain however...

April temps slightly below the seasonal average here. Will stay that way, especially after this coming week.

This news item is a couple of weeks old so apologies if you have seen it, but in case you haven't:

http://science.sciencemag.org/content/355/6332/1354.full

A new cloud atlas, now with contrails

Contrails, or aircraft condensation trails, are now included in WMO's cloud atlas.

Stunning images of cloud formations dot the World Meteorological Organization's latest incarnation of its International Cloud Atlas, released online last week. The first update to the atlas (https://www.wmocloudatlas.org/home.html) in decades includes one new cloud species—“volutus,” a long, tube-shaped cloud that appears to roll across the horizon—as well as human-mediated clouds such as contrails, the vapor trails sometimes produced by airplanes. The atlas also describes several new “supplementary features”—cloud formations attached to a main cloud. One such feature is “cavum,” which resembles a hole punched through a broad, thin layer of cloud. Another is “fluctus,” also known as a Kelvin-Helmholtz cloud, which is shaped much like the geometric waves on a Minoan vase. And then there's “asperitas” (Latin for “roughness”); this dramatically bumpy cloud is a favorite of the Cloud Appreciation Society, founded in 2005 by London author and cloud enthusiast Gavin Pretor-Pinney. The society has lobbied for the inclusion of asperitas in the official atlas for nearly a decade—and finally got their wish.

The Guardian also a good article on this as well:

Dose anyone know if the BOM has an updated version of their volume: "Observing the weather"?
