G'day guys! Bula vinaka. smile

New thread for the final event for April 2017, so here we go.

The models and charts seem to be aligning for what's shaping up to be a potentially major winter storm event, so here go!

The latest satellite images have a trough developing over Southern Australia. A large high pressure ridge extending off the Indian Ocean to the nation's southwest will break down, clearing the way for an enormous, deepening low pressure system and a mighty cold front swinging northbound across the Southern Ocean from Antarctica!

As the trough dips into Southeastern Australia ahead of the impending storm, a separate high pressure area in the South Pacific will allow winds to swing around into a strengthening, mild to warm northerly airflow across Victoria. Then the main storm system and polar blast burst upon us on late on Tuesday and Wednesday, unleashing a bone-chilling, wintry cold outbreak, with a couple of further fronts brushing past in the days afterwards as the Indian Ocean high pressure ridge rebuilds.

For tomorrow:

Morning fog patches, then mild to warm with moderate northerly winds inland; easterly winds near the coastal area. Cloud increasing with scattered showers and possible late thunderstorms developing across the Western districts then spreading eastwards, tending to area of rain late in the day in the Southwest. Forecast highs of 22C for Melbourne and 24C for Mildura.

For Tuesday (ANZAC Day):

Cool to mild with moderate to fresh west/northwest winds. Rain and thunderstorms clearing eastwards with showers to follow. Forecast highs of 19C for Melbourne and 21C for Mildura.

For Wednesday:

Cold and mostly cloudy with strong, gusy southwesterly winds. Showers and thunderstorms with local hail affecting most districts, although only isolated showers expected in the Northwest. Snowfalls down to 800m. Forecast highs of 14C for Melbourne and 15C for Mildura.

For Thursday:

Scattered showers along and south of the Great Dividing Range, with isolated showers spilling into the north; dry over the Northern Plains. Light snowfalls in the Alpine region. Cold and mostly cloudy with moderate southwesterly winds. Forecast highs of 15C for Melbourne and 17C.

GFS has hinted at rainfall totals of up to 25-50mm for Melbourne's southeast for this event; no doubt the "bay effect" will be in full operation, especially on Wednesday! grin

ACCESS and GFS also have a possible intense ECL blowing up on Thursday/Friday once this storm enters the Tasman Sea and encounters the warm East Australian Current, which could make things interesting for you guys out in Gippsland and possibly the Northeast! smile

Have a good one guys!

WATL forecasts re Nth Gippsland as per-

"Tue 25 Apr - Forecast Rain Min12C Max20C Possible rainfall: 4 to 10 mm Chance of any rain: 80%

Wed 26 Apr - Forecast Showers Min7C Max14C Possible rainfall: 2 to 8mm Chance of any rain: 90% "

Thu 27 Apr - Forecast Showers Min5C Max15CPossible rainfall: 0 to 1mmChance of any rain: 50%

Looking at ACCESs, we might get 1/2", be nice to get that plus some snow also with the cold air Wed/Thur.

Waiting for that ECL to spin us a bit more rain asf grin

In the meantime picture perfect April weather with some humid pre midday build up that cools and doesn't come to anything that makes noise/sparks.

Thanks for the thread asf 😀

What a system she is lining up to be!!
Snow to 800m for this time of year is
Very low?? This is the type is system
That could deliver 20-30mm in the
Sustained sw airflow😀😀and require
Every bit of that hopefully lol

Could see some sleet as well if that snow line
Gets down to that 800m level or a little lower.
Baw Baw should get a nice ground cooler

800m???
I was more thinking 1200m.
Maybe 800m for Tassie though.
Wouldn't be surprised if Baw Baw and Lake Mountain had 20cm+, thanks to that S-SW flow

Seems about right- GFS has 850/700mb temps at about -3/-13 degrees C centred in the Gippsland for Wed night and Thu morning which I believe would be cold enough for snow down to 800m if everything lines up. I reckon there's a solid 12 hours if not more where there is a chance of snow down to that level.

Overnight low of 13.5C, currently around 15C and mostly cloudy. Also very wet, with surprisingly heavy showers rolling through the Melbourne area from the northwest. Collected 1mm of rain so far. smile

The main trough is still back over South Australia though. Going to be an interesting day! smile

Excellent pics SH, will have to learn how to drive it first to get anywhere near the info available there.

Can you zoom into areas as small as say 1/4 of the area of Vic?

Thanks grin

Nice charts Samboz and SH. Pity I still don't fully understand how to read them, but I'm learning lol. smile

Warming up here in Belgrave, around 25C at the last check. It felt very humid earlier, but the northerly breeze is providing some relief.

I'll enjoy the sunshine while I can! The trough is still back over South Australia, with showers/rain and the odd storm developing along/ahead of it. Cloud is increasing on satellite over Victoria's Western Plains ahead of the trough and should move over Melbourne in coming hours. Hoping for some storm action tonight! smile

The cold front is on its way too! It should enter the Bight over the next 24 hours, and then burst upon Victoria late-tomorrow! ACCESS and GFS still have the ECL scenario unfolding by Wednesday/Thursday as earlier predicted. smile

You can zoom this far in. There's also other charts available such as the German ICON model http://weather.graphics/icon/icon13.php. There's much more paid content too.

Reached a top of 26.0C here in Belgrave today, lovely! smile

Cloud has rolled over as anticipated, but there are still sunny breaks; it sure felt quite hot and humid in the sun while out walking over the past hour, although there's a light breeze to cool things down a bit. smile

Currently around 24C. I'll stay outside as long as possible, it looks kinda unstable and convective about the place, and getting kinda dark and ominous towards the west! Storms are flaring on radar between Colac and Ararat, hope they can make it past Geelong and Ballarat into Melbourne. smile

Edit: forgot to mention that we had another heavy shower roll through our neck of the woods just after 9am, not enough to dump any further measurable rainfall though but ah well. smile

Trying to decipher WINDYTV model asf, think it indicates that rain will not be coming from the ECL on this occasion, comments very welcome re this subject pls.

ACCESS-R suggests weak PWAT influence over Far East Gippsland on Wednesday (possible light-moderate precipitation in region from the developing low in the Western Tasman Sea)

The low should go under RI in the Tasman, but will most likely be too far away from the Australian Eastern Seaboard to be considered an ECL.

All models are consistent with a SE track towards the Far South of NZ, with most models suggesting the Tasman Low will go back into Antarctic.

In summary, it won't be an ECL in technical terms, but some places along the coast may get a bit windy. Not a lot of rain in the cold front though. The correct term for this would be a Tasman Low IMO.

Thanks SH, does PWAT reflect measured rainfall at the gauge, or is there an rough % of PWAT that is measured at the gauge depending on other atmospheric conditions?

WINDYTV certainly had a good flow back down S SH, one of the reasons I thought the Low might not contribute much on this occasion now we are closer to it all happening!

Re RI - (sunspot related) yep, right grin

PWAT is Precipitable Water Anomaly. Explanation from NOAA: "Precipitable Water - measure of the depth of liquid water at the surface that would result after precipitating all of the water vapor in a vertical column over a given location, usually extending from the surface to 300 mb"

are you looking at EC or GFS on windytv? I agree that it is a nice S flow, should give some nice snow to Baw Baw.

RI = Rapid Intensification (Going from 1000mb-980mb as an example) Not sunspot related the way I know it.

Victorians had started one month early wet season in April 2017 over average rainfall compare to April 2016 was under average and May 2016 was 90mm over average.

I had another 20mm overnight bring well over average of 110mm.

This winter likely muddy winter.

More thunder from 1015 to 1115 or so last night, just the odd nice rumble. Another great rain event. 30.9mm so over 150mm for the month of April.

Samboz, a high pwat can be fun (or not) if it coincides with slack upper air patterns resulting in slow moving systems or cells.

Overnight low of 15.1C, still hovering around 14-15C atm thanks to this humidity and thick foggy cloudcover! But at least it's not windy, so it doesn't feel cold. crazy

Terrific event so far, but got off to a sluggish start. The severe storms I mentioned in my last posts never made it here. Same story for a few surprise heavy showers and thunderstorms that sprung up around 5pmish at the north end of Port Phillip and near the City before rolling southeastwards towards Wilsons Promontory. Looked dark and threatening in that direction, but didn't even hear any thunder or see any lightning. frown

But it was a very mild evening, around 18C with little wind, perfect for spending outside until just before the first teasing showers arrived after 8pm. smile

The main rainband and associated embedded heavy shower and thunderstorm activity FINALLY moved in from the northwest just before 11pm, and lasted until just before 9am this morning! smile

I slept through most of it, but I was wide awake between 3:30am and 5:30am. Near-constant moderate rain with quite a few heavier downpours tossed in, and it was windy at times too! No thunder, lightning or hail though but ah well. smile

Collected 31.6mm in the 24 hours to 9am, with the peak rainfall rate (at 9am when I woke up again) being 8.9mm/hr; no doubt it was much heavier than that at times during the night.

The main stormy rainband has cleared off now, but we've had further showers (sometimes drizzly, other times heavy) come through in its wake. Another 5.3mm since 9am. smile

My April 2017 total has now gone from 35.8mm to 72.7mm, thanks to this one event. Very nice! smile

Still raining atm, but the majority of showers should clear soon. smile

Re the ECL discussion SH, looking at EC where a strong S/E is coming off Mallacoota and heading south, basically taking any coriolis effect away from the mainland.

Looking at - https://www.windytv.com/?-36.633,151.260,5

Read wrong glossary re RI, will work on that... smile

Re PWAT, OK get that, it is only a measure of airborne water vapour.

Okay that's all cool - I get my EC data from a backdoor. I prefer 850mb wind charts which apply higher up, which go further inland. But the bottom line is like you said the ECL is away from the mainland.

Reached a top of only 15.9C here in Belgrave today, just over 10C cooler than yesterday! Again, nice that it wasn't windy so I barely noticed how cold it was. smile

Still around 15C atm. The sky's grown a bit lighter now that most of the showers have cleared off.

Tomorrow it's a different story, with forecast highs of only 13-15C for the Melbourne metropolitan area!

The cold front is now moving into position to strike Victoria! Already a few precursor showers developing ahead of it over the Southwest and into SE South Australia.

Expect winds and clouds to increase with showers and thunderstorms developing over the west tonight, then spread eastwards tomorrow with a vigorous, unstable cold blast! Local hail, squalls, and snowfalls to 900m likely. Interesting day ahead, with the Dandenong Ranges area anticipating around another 5-20mm of rain, in large part due to the "bay effect". smile

Had light persistent showers from 3am onwards today till breakfast, a couple of light arvo showers added to the tally to give us 6.5mm.

Pretty much a cloudy mild calm day here today, with a bit of SW'ly breeze under the arvo showers. Baro has bottomed out at 1014 hPa here. Calm at present.

Looks like us Central Gippslanders will wake to a "snotty winter morning" tomorrow??

...maybe I should change my mid week sporting endevours to indoor carpet bowls!

Yep already dreading it! Work outside, and no being rained off, so going to be cold and soggy! Hoping no storms, with hail and 100kph gusts, as any, or all would suck!

Ground around surf coast areas, haven't yet stopped draining off, since the last two events previous to yesterday. Haven't seen this much rain since the mid 90's.

Had about 30 minutes worth of sunshine before sunset, too late to warm the temperature up much though but never mind. smile

Currently around 12-13C.

Skies remained mostly clear well past nightfall, but it's now clouding over, winds are starting to pick up, and we had the odd spit of rain a short while ago. That shower/storm line out in the bay looks fast-moving and heavy; it should hit us in about an hour's time!

The main cold front is now moving into the far corner of SE South Australia, and will spread quickly into Victoria overnight. Expect conditions to deteriorate quickly overnight.

Barometric pressure at 1005hPa.

Edit: storm front's intensifying!

Another 26mm added to our April's rain fall - now over 100mm (106) and so close to our highest recorded April average 126mm - can't see the record being broken but damn we've had two months in a row above average rainfall and I'm sure the three month forecast was for below average rainfall and above average temps - they got half right.
I was motocycle touring this weekend and was on top of Hotham this morning and it was not fun coming down the mountain in that weather - cold, wet and foggy, visibility was less than 50m, a scary ride down for me - I've not ridden under those conditions before

We have had a few good dumps already, this evening, only light cloud on satellite, but be a few mm already, and temps just starting to drop more. That front, intensifying, will be wild.

That was pretty wild! The "bay effect" gave the storm line a real energy boost! Just before 10pm it struck Belgrave, unleashing a 10 minute downpour. The rain was really loud, and it sounded like it was being lashed by strong winds! =D

The rain stopped altogether after about 20 minutes or so. Peak rainfall rate from the storm was 62mm/hr, with another 5.3mm collected, so 10.6mm since 9am. smile

The temperature peaked at 13.6C just before the storm hit, now it's down to 11.9C.

The front is now moving into Southwest Victoria and is really packing a punch!

Overnight low of 9.0C, still currently around 9C. This cold weather is a real shock to the system! eek

The front hit here around 3:30am. We've had heavy showers and thunderstorms for much of the morning. Heard only a couple of rumbles of thunder, but otherwise we've had more heavy rain.

Another 14.7mm since midnight, so 25.3mm in the 24 hours to 9am. Nearly at 100mm for April 2017 smile

Can thank the bay effect for that Samboz! This April has been unreal in terms of rainfall. Some locations recording their highest April rain in decades. Forgot to mention Waratah Bay also recording 60 mm of rain in Monday night's trough passing.

RE the storm that passed here early there are reports on the emergency website showing multiple accounts of storm/flooding damage in a line from St Kilda to Mill Park

Reached a top of only 15.1C here in Belgrave today; the Sun came out around 10:30am.

I was out in Boronia between 11am and 4pm. The weather was cold with a mix of Sun and rain, with frequent showers (locally heavy) brushing the landscape. No thunderstorms or hail though. Quite windy at times too, especially along Glenfern Road in Ferntree Gully!

Collected only another 1.1mm since 9am. Hoping for more rain overnight and in the next couple of days, just need more cold air and for winds to veer more directly southwesterly.

Currently around 8C.

The temperature's dropped sharply over the past couple of hours, already my coldest night for April 2017 (and for the year to date), currently 6.1C but could easily drop further! poke

Wish we were under those showers that are heading north through the main Melbourne metropolitan area to our west. frown

Cooler y'day and a beautiful April morning of clear skies sun and no wind here.

Only 5.5mm out of event plus a shower overnight. Still doing well from this Autumn weather, grass growing very nicely.

Some snow visible on Mt Wellington this morning, not a big cover and no doubt much more y'day but covered in cloud all day.

Overnight low of 6.1C, currently around 9C and mostly cloudy.

Collected 5.3mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am, with the showers resuming here in Belgrave around 11:30pm last night.

More showers coming up from the south, only need 2mm extra to reach 100mm! smile

ASF Is that 100 mm for the event? If so we are ditto in the amount of rain! (Also on 98 mm here in the past 3 days) Up to 145 mm for the month here too which is just phenomenal.

We have been perfectly placed in a convergence zone with constant showers coming up in a SSW stream from the bay.

Not going to lie, I am quite keen for some sun!

Lol no, it's 98mm for the month Hunter1890. Sorry I failed to mention that. poke

Reached a top of 16.8C here in Belgrave today, noticeably sunnier milder than the past couple of days but still damp and chilly with the odd shower.

Currently around 12C.

A cold day here (11C in Sale during one heavy shower) yet had a couple of sunny periods to give us a 17.4C max at some stage. Baro has pushed back up to 1020 hPa.

Mid arvo showers arrived which gave us 2.25mm taking us to a handy 13.5mm for the event. Winter grasses (poa-anna etc.) have started to bound out of the ground at a green Royal Maffra - which saw its 10cm soil temp fall back to 11C this afternoon.

Overnight low of 9.3C, currently around 14C and mostly cloudy.

No further measurable rainfall in the last 24 hours. We had some drizzly showers here in Belgrave around dinnertime last night, with the base of the clouds so low that they were illuminating the lights in the Upwey/Ferntree Gully area during my tennis lesson around 6:30pm; fortunately the rain wasn't a deterrent.

Reached a top of 17.9C here in Belgrave today. Very little if any sun, but less gloomy than the previous days, and hardly any wind too. Still it was dank and depressing. frown

A few light showers passed through around dinnertime, but no measurable rainfall.

Currently around 14C.

Overnight low of 12.8C, currently around 20C and partly cloudy with lengthening sunny breaks. Much nicer than the past couple of days! smile

Collected another 1mm of rain last night, which brings the April 2017 total to 99mm! Only need one more millimetre to reach the 100mm mark. We've had a few light showers this morning, but hopefully we'll get a bit more rain between now and 9am tomorrow morning. wink

Reached a top of 20.7C here in Belgrave today, over first 20C+ day in five days! smile

It stayed mostly sunny until mid-afternoon, before turning overcast and gloomy again, but still dry. Really hoping for a bit of overnight rain to bring the monthly total to 100mm.

High cloud ahead of the next frontal system (now entering the Bight) starting to appear across the western horizon. smile
