As per Homer's request, here is a thread. Post obs and forecasts etc in this thread. Not much to say here for me, it's been pretty well covered in the DTD thread.

I dare say a few people unaware of this change are going to get quite a surprise.
Dave M's first frosts of the season are in store as well.
Anzac Day once again is the turning of the seasons.
Very spot on this year.

Certainly wasn't cold overnight. Was at the dawn service this morning and in years gone past a jumper is normally required at that time of the morning, but not today was quite mild with a light NE breeze blowing.
It was a beautiful sunrise too this morning!!

Forecasted to get to 27c here today and Bulahdelah forecasted to get to 29c.
Somehow I think those temps are a couple degrees to high, anyway time will tell.

Shouldn't become an ECL. Most model tracks (including this one from the UKMO model) show the MSLP low moving in a SE track and undergoing RI a fair way from the Aussie Mainland, rendering it a Tasman Low.

Persistence of moonsonal troughing this late in season is the wrecking ball of solid cold fronts

Hearing the odd distant rumble here. Some very warm temps this late in year ahead of this. Some 28's western Sydney and Hunter region. Wonder how this 3 day hottish streak stacks up historically for Sydney. Paging Steve. Come in Steve

It was sunny, humid and quite warm when I walked to the shops around noon. It felt like Summer. I see that a number of Sydney stations peaked around 27-28 in the early afternoon. OH peaked at exactly 80 deg F, very warm for late April. Looks like the BOM were right with the first Anzac Day forecast of 27C.

It's now completely overcast but still warm. Apart from a few spots it hasn't started raining here yet.

We missed the sunny part here at least from 10am onwards, not sure about earlier than that. Still felt pleasantly warm with quite a strong breeze but now it is cooler after some moderate rain.

Actually, I need to adjust my last post. While it didn't look like it was raining when I looked out the window from the sofa, I found when I went outside that it was raining lightly and had been apparently for a while. The pace is picking up now, although judging by the radar the rain band will pass soon.

Cold lovers might find this edifying. Looking at just a couple of years that had a similar or even warmer string of days in late April including Anzac day in Sydney, I notice that each month of winter was below average. Some months noticably so. This is for years 1986 and 1953. I might do a bit more digging on this.

Interesting stuff Knot. 1986 was an excellent winter with snow on the ground for a few weeks in the higher parts of the CT's from what I've read.

Oops I'm thinking of 1990, but 1986 I think had an extremely good cold front with sleet in the higher parts of Sydney. 25th July 1986 I think.

lol Forget last post. I read wrong column as 'to date' . I was reading the 'normal' as to date. too many ales. Both those years had warmer than av temps for winter. Back to the drawing board and the weather at hand. Feels like I awoke in the tropics

On April 26, 1953, it reached 30.2 at OH, following 29.8 on Anzac Day. Interestingly (for weather nerds), they were the hottest two days of the very cool 'Summer' of 1952/53, if you extend the definition to include March and April. It had not reached 30 there since Nov 16 (when 31.7). The average maximum (rounded) in each of December to April was 24, 24, 24, 24 and 24.

Some past and present posters here would have loved that Summer, some would have hated it.

The Winter that followed was average, which compared to what we've got used to in recent decades means cold.

1986 got up to 29C from memory, the day before Anzac Day.
Can't recall it staying warm beyond Anzac Day though.
Winter was cold, and most notable for the incredible rainfall in August that year. (as was 1998)
There have been some recent years with very hot temps in the last week of April, in fact temps hotter than the May record.
Unlikely this year though.

2013 though had a string of hot late April days, then record hot July's and September. (and August not that far behind 1995 either).
There is often very little correlation between seasons in central NSW where most of us are, which makes it interesting.

Lol Eddy. Didnt notice me typo.
The front that was to swing in after this nothing burger trough is being elbowed I reckon. The highs are just too strong. Just look to the tropics and you see why. Be lucky to get one below average day out of this.

This change ain't looking as crash hot as it was yesterday in regards to precip. Just a standard cold front really, bit of snow on the alps, heaps of wind everywhere and not much else. I highly doubt any snow on the CT's other than a few flakes, though Mt Canobolas could be the exception.

Manual gauge picked up 20mm overnight, new auto station scored 32.8mm. Not sure which to trust, as I'm used to wx stations *under*reporting rain grin

Nice drop there davidm and yeah that sucks when you have such a large discrepancy between gauges, had that problem myself in the past.

7.9mm from last nights non thunderstorm.

Lovely photo Eddy grin

Nice drop Davidm - better than here (as usual re Orange/Bathurst). Around 9 or 10mm here it seems. It was nice to actually have "rain".

Put some wood under cover yesterday, most likely kick start the fire tonight - first for the year smile

Breezy outside - will cool fairly dramatically early afternoon. We will probably drop from around 14 or 15 to about 6 or 7 by dark.

Might be a bit of a shock to the system grin

Scratch my last comment re cloud cover. Almost as soon as I wrote that, it clouded over a lot more to the point that is more like 80% and on higher ground to my west and south it is almost 100% with gaps very sparse. Even looks like a very light shower or two out Millthorpe way.

It feels quite coolish in the breeze indeed, it will of course get cooler as the afternoon unfolds.

A band of very heavy showers just came through - quite impressive while it lasted.

Blue sky now - BUT radar shows another band approaching rapidly.

This warmth is just unrelenting out here at Glendale in Newcastle. Sheesh. I thought today was originally forecast to be cooler than this. Not sure how much of this late season heat I can take

It was about 15 before the showers hit but it rapidly dropped to about 10.5, now back up to 13.

Lovely in the sun actually wind has eased off noticeably.

The next heavy set band of cloud is looming about 20km away to my west.

Brief pea sized hail here. Few close CGs too shocked

Temp dropped to 8.5c. Was 13c at midday - massive drop. That'd be solid thundersnow in winter.

Edit: 8.2c now lol

Edit 2: 13.6c at 11:56, 7.9c at 12:22 - that's a 5.7c drop in less than half an hour!

Very pleasant, 23.4C right now with a slight WNW wind, forecast was 23C.
Change due later today.
Not as potent as originally anticipated, temp upgraded to 19C tomorrow. (was originally 17C).
Looks like back to 24C on the 1st and 2nd May as well!
Could easily get accustomed to this perpetual mildness, with the heat of summer and sun strength gone.

Cheers DavidM.

I was looking out my window (north facing) and thinking how nice n sunny it was.

Stepped out the front door and my peripheral vision gave me a big heads up!!!

It is black black black and it is nearly here.

We are currently just under 15, Orange Airport just over 7, bit of a diff grin

Reckon the next lot about to hit should get us under 10 degrees as well. smile

Our beautiful sunny day has gone, after peaking at about 25 about an hour ago. It's now fully overcast, although it hasn't got much cooler yet. It looks like it will get interesting later this afternoon, going by the radar and reports here.

EDIT: just had a moderate shower and a peal of thunder. Light rain continues.

I'm guessing the arrival of the SWer will dry things up east of the ranges. I'm surprised that these cells are sustaining themselves at the moment.

Thunder audible from the CBD

I'm under the orange cell East of Marsfield. Light, sometimes moderate rain continues, with the occasional roll of thunder. Not as intense as it looks on the radar, but then I wasn't expecting anything this soon.

Interesting: No thunder or lightning from this cell but we had some very tiny hail (like 0.5cm diameter) along with huge wind which is still continuing.

Yeah Donzah it looked very interesting, guess it hasn't hit you yet.

Suddenly a huge flash (though my eyes were playing tricks) then a big rumble that made all the [censored] myna birds fly away.

About 7mm at the airport although with the hail travelling horizontally, I suspect actually more than 7. smile

Storms and showers about Sydney are rapidly falling apart now, although there's still action on the Central Coast.

That last cell was a fizzer - a couple of rolls of thunder and a few light showers, but it's now much colder - around 14-15.

Looks like the Dapto cell skilfully slid between Albion Park and Bellambi gauges. Looked like brief heavy rain towards Warrawong (looking from Shellharbour, where we got 10 drops).

Can see snow virga around 1500m maybe to east now, looks more like a August/September frontal sky.

Yeah it did, I think it was particularly strong around Berkeley/Lake Heights. Someone on your ISC fb page said they had 10 min of hail at Lake Heights, we only had about 2 mins of a small hail and rain mix.

Btw mostly clear here now and not much wind. I'm sure it will start howling like madness at nightfall or a few hours after dark it will just suddenly pick up.

Really unusual here in Woonona
Its dead calm, barely a whimper
coolish and grey/ sun mix.
As ozthunder said . Virga and whispy mid level stuff out to sea after that change.
Winds look a bit more southerly down the coast, so we may see a rise in wind speed overnight.

Hmm if it's turning more southerly overnight then we won't get much wind in this area. You will closer to the coast of course. My suburb for some reason is amazingly protected from southerlies. If they stay westerly then a big blow is likely on the way.

You can see on the radar , pushing up the coast..
southerlies are never "strong" either around here for long.
The downhill nature of the escarpment promotes wind speed for sure . Hence Dapto always cops a strong westerly.

Certainly was an interesting afternoon here, a couple of thundery showers and once the front hit, winds I guess were about the 70-80kmph mark and the temp dropped from a pleasant 24c to unpleasant 13c in minutes.
Storm chasing was made hard as I was coming back from Newcastle and had to do Mr mum duties!! grin
Made a tactical error once I did get out, went to the river, had I went to the beach I would have scored some nice bolts.
This pic was taken about an hour before the front come through, this cell tried hard to drop a spout or two on a couple of occasions.

Nice pic Eddy, will get back to ya on the vid though.

Yeah that's exactly it Donzah. I actually live in Horsley and there's been countless times where it has got windier and windier as you drive closer to the escarpment compared to Dapto. But yet tonight home is calm but wind driving into town.

14C temp wow, thought it was a bit chilly. Not overly common to actually get a proper SWer like tonight. Usually westerly or southerly.

Thanks guys.

Wind here is still NW and its still about the 12c(already turned the computer off so I can't check).

I've been watching that fast moving southerly surge up the coast, should get a few showers clip over the Port to Seal Rocks.

Definitely cold enough today, 14.4C right now and steady.
Had a wintry feel coming home from work last night.
Not whinging though, we had our glut of mild to warm weather.

The cold change certainly has spread throughout the whole state.
Current highest temp is 22.4C on Lord Howe Island, where the change probably hasn't arrived yet.
Places in the Northwest and Upper Western, like Bourke, Moree, Walgett etc, that had screeching summers, would be enjoying this now.
Bourke is only 17C, and even Birdsville, though just across the border, is only 20C now.

Looks like our max was 18.9C at 1400 and again at 1430.
Pretty much on track with the forecast.
At Singleton now, is currently 18.0C.
Places further up the Hunter, like Scone, have only just reached their forecast max of 17C.

Some good solid showers have arrived in the last hour or so. It was 14c not long ago but doesn't really feel that cold with the humidity coming back late this evening.

It's not too bad Knot. After having a great hot summer I can live with these cooler winter conditions. Only fair if you cold lovers got some good weather.

Cold tonight. 1C at Goulburn with DP below 0 so min will easily be in the negatives.

Coldest morning in Sydney since October and coldest April morning at OH (10.2) in 5 years. It was still around 16 at midnight but quickly cooled when the cloud cleared. Most of Sydney dropped below 10.

Bright and sunny here.

Winds should be S/SEly on the coast today if there are SSW winds inland. Guess it's too cold for winds to go onshore. It's like the opposite of a seabreeze, where the land is much cooler than the ocean in this case.

-4 at Goulburn Ap this morning and -6 at Perisher Valley.

Cardigans Eddy. Gotta go with cardigans.
Nice cold walk on beach earlyish this morning. Was crisp. Just the way I like it. I remember years ago reading a surf column. And a guy said he loved wintery weather coz it quote 'cleared the dregs' off the beach unquote. I can see his point. Much more solitude at the beach in late Autumn/winter. I like it that way these days. Might struggle to hit 21 here today. More like 20.

@Jabo Rum toddy. Good for a cold

Flannelette shirts and tracksuit pants today.
That means we have changed seasons.
Working either early morning shifts or evening, this becomes a necessity during shoulder seasons.
That is provided the diurnal range isn't too high. (biggest was 4-35C in October 2012)

Wind is slowly swinging to the south now, wouldn't be surprised with a shower or two this afternoon.

Sydney's April has been in two parts, cool with a continuation of the wet pattern of March, then someone turned off the big tap in the sky. So there was rain on 7 of the first 13 days, totalling 80mm, then just 2mm on 3 of the 15 days since then, with little or none expected before the end of the month.

Still bright sunshine with a few scud clouds to the East, about 20 across Sydney. OH been been the hot spot, peaking at 21.5 earlier.

In the cool zone here. Wont reach 19. Amazes me how parts of Sydney get warmer than some places a few kms up or down the road in a set up like this. I dont suppose massive urban development has anything to do with it. nudge nudge
