Fingers crossed for some reasonable falls in the coming days.

It is not unusual for us to get some handy dry season rain about this time of the year, but it generally comes from the West, not the East.

I don't care where it comes from, as long as it comes.

Then bring on the chill I say!

Morning all. Two foggy mornings in a row. Massive rainfalls predicted (yeah right) for the end of the week. Next major event will be a single digit minimum and then nada until December.

Flood watch issued

Initial Flood Watch for coastal catchments between Cairns and Gladstone, extending inland to parts of the Burdekin and Fitzroy catchments
Issued at 3:06 pm EST on Tuesday 16 May 2017
Issue Number: 1
A surface trough is likely to form in the Coral Sea near the southern tropical coast on Wednesday and then move slowly southwest onto the coast, providing a focus for increased shower and rain activity.
Widespread rainfall totals of 100 to 200 mm are forecast to occur across the watch area from Wednesday evening through to Friday evening, with isolated heavier totals up to 400 mm possible.
River level rises above the minor flood level are possible based on forecast rainfall. Heavy rainfall may also lead to localised flash flooding.
Catchments at risk within the Flood Watch area include the Mulgrave, Russell, Johnstone, Tully, Murray, Herbert, Bohle, Ross, Haughton, Don, Proserpine and Pioneer rivers, and parts of the Burdekin and Fitzroy rivers. For those catchments affected by ex-TC "Debbie" during March and April, flood levels during this event are expected to be significantly lower.

Whatever rain you TSV folk get,I hope you get it over your dam catchment.
Whatever it adds to the dam capacity, is a bonus.

Models seem to of backed off the totals a bit overnight. More believable now.

I think most of the moisture will fall south of our area, but beggars can't be choosers.

I hope I am wrong and a big deluge sits over the Woodstock area and fills the dam up.

According to EC we have to wait for that trough to the west to cross us to get the next lot of heavy rain then that's it.

44m overnight in West End .. had some noisy thunder too!

Makes me want to cry seeing what's happening to the south of us. Hopefully what's still due to come in from the west will give us some more rain.

Mick, could you tell me what geographic points, width and furthest point from the dam wall that would indicate were your dam catchment actually is.

I am 6 kilometres from the dam as the crow flies and have had 105mm in the last 24 hours to 3.30pm (when it started raining at my place yesterday). Yesterday was 38mm and 67mm emptied out of my Nylex at 3.30pm.

Dam wall has recorded 38mm since 9.00am this morning see http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/flood/townsville.shtml for details.

For sure this is the best widespread rain for the H&LB this season. Consistent totals extending from the coast to the inland parts - hope the next 24hrs delivers some more before sliding south. Not a drought breaker but will hopefully drop a few months supply into the dam. Enjoy it guys. Radar looks good for another burst : - )

Went down to Brisbane yesterday to attend an information session and tour at the BOM QLD office.

It was a great experience.
One of the biggest shocks to me was how small their office space is, and how few people were working there.

I was expecting a large office full of people, but it was a tiny office space with 4 people working.

The way the forecasts are created was interesting to learn:
Of those 4 people working, there was a person solely doing Marine and another solely doing Aviation forecasts.

The public forecasts for the next day ahead for the entire state are all put together by one person alone.
While the public forecasts for days 2 to 7 for the entire state are nearly entirely computer generated, with one person reviewing them and making any necessary edits to MetEye.

Having learnt that, I now understand why the forecasts can often change so drastically the day before.
I've seen plenty of occasions before where, for example, the forecast for Friday will be the same on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday prior, and then suddenly change dramatically on Thursday, the day before.

The accuracy of the "next day ahead" forecasts varies depending on who is working in that position on any given day.

The Brisbane office does all forecasts from Cardwell south to the border, while the Cairns office releases the forecasts for Cardwell north, to the tip of QLD and the Peninsula.

I knew the boys and girls in Townsville before the budget was cut and some lost their jobs. AND, (excuse the grammar) they no longer have 24 hours cover north from Brisbane - no funding. They did a good job in the past, but governments (of any persuasion) really do not understand what the BOM does or how important their work is. AND (excuse the grammar again), does any politician give BOM credance? Haven't heard any lately ... please prove me wrong if you can....

As David Lloyd George said famously: "If you want to succeed in politics, you must keep your conscience well under control."

It's goodnight from me and goodnight from him .......

i have seen a more detailed map for the catchment area, but be damned if i can find it now sorry. i should have saved it last time. its a pretty small catchment, basically goes inland to Calcium.

147mm since 0900hrs yesterday with a total of 184mm for the last 2 days and still 90 minutes until I can give a real 24 hour total.

For people who think this will somehow magically fill the dam it won't, we need in excess of 2000mm to even put a large dent in the stored capacity and probably double that to fill it. Latest dam level reading was 0500hrs 18/5/17 and it showed 16%. Possibly gone up by 1% overnight but there is no current reading for this morning.

Dam level has risen 36cm over last 2 days.

And there we have it Trav - jagged the rainfall overnight and this morning and we have a few months supply into the dam. At about 3.5% per month draw down hopefully around 3 extra months supply if we can get the 10% inflow. Unfortunately there was a reasonable amount of rain required to prime the catchments for runoff.

Brilliant event and not one we have seen for a long time. However as you say why cant this happen in summer when we might have seen 2 or 3 times the totals with a real monsoonal influence...grrrrr

Latest dam readings of the council website at 7am this morning:

Ross River Dam = 19%
Paluma Dam = 97%

And off the Sun Water website at 12 noon

Burdekin Falls Dam = 98.6%

NO WAY ON THIS PLANET SHOULD WE HAVE SUCH RIDICULOUS WATER RESTRICTIONS FOR TOWNSVILLE ..............

We are literally p*^s@+g our resources away .... time to stop and get real people - enough is enough !!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we all started watering all the time, the courts would be unable to cope and a revolution just might make the pollies sit up and take notice for the first time. We have waited far too long for this to be fixed.

Yes I was happy while it was raining, grumpy now though. We need a shed load more than we got and sure it will delay pumping by a couple of weeks but the fact remains that our present dam is woefully inadequate and it will never be anything but the best worst solution to our water security.

202mm for the event.
Yard is a swamp, gardens look water logged, sun birds are looking for a new nesting site as the old one was washed away when the rain gutters over flowed. Nice warm morning and I am quite happy. Dam is is showing an increase to 22% capacity.

Final total was 181mm in West End. Pretty good.

(I've just realised that I didn't put in the 22mm we had up to 11pm on the 17th! that changes my totals ... sorry folks.)

Ross River Dam = 22%
Paluma = 97% (no change currently from yesterday ?)
Burdekin Falls Dam = 101.7%

We might get a little more in the dams as the flood waters flow down from the catchment areas.

The weather fronts that met up over the coast were an anomaly at this time of year but brought us something we desperately needed.

Fun stuff - NOT
I think it was Channel 9 that said earlier in the week that Townsville was expecting severe flooding as the rain from Cyclone Debbie had left the Ross River Dam overflowing. (Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story!!)

Can anyone better this???

Well I had to explain on Facebook to friends and family and managed to convince most of them that we had 1mm of rain, that the maximum wind gust I got was 15kph and that no the dam hadn't been filled up as the cyclone was 200klms south of us. Having to explain how the rain falls during a cyclone was a pain but most of them got it in the end. I posted a photo of Ross Dam a couple of days after Debbie to show how dry the dam was.
As to media getting things wrong weather wise is nothing new. This is what happens when there are no local news reporters on site who can convince the capital cities new services that we actually exist.

Anything north of Bowen basically had a dismal wet season, and if it wasn't for TC Debbie, our YTD would of been at 800mm rather than 1875mm

Hey RC dont bag the council.
We all know there descion to build a stadium before a dam will help townsville.
As games wont last long due to ball being lost in between cracks in dirt on field. Which means less water drunk by patrons. Which means less water used..good for dam
Lmao

Can we please stop this nonsense about the stadium. The money for that was pledged by both parties in Federal Government during the lead up to the elections. At the same time Bob Katter sought and was granted funding for the Hells Gate Dam feasibility study which has a preliminary report already tabled and the extended report is awaiting completion.

The stadium was directly funded via last years budget and has nothing to do with any funding for the dam. Yes its a lot of money. So what? It was given via an act of parliament so to access the funds instead for a dam it would need to be sent back to parliament for revocation (and both major parties would have to agree) and it would need to pass 3 readings to do this. Lower house, senate and the lower house and then the funds could be released, now once that happens the government is under no obligation to reallocate funding for the stadium at a later date nor would there be any obligation to fund a new dam/pipe line and instead the money would go to the next most urgent requirement.

So the chance is that if it was to be revoked zero dollars would be spent in Townsville, zero jobs created, zero taxes paid and the flow on would be zero as well if you tried to recoup the funds from the stadium. Yeah I can just see that happening not. It would be political suicide for any party who even attempted to convince the public this would be a good idea.

Meanwhile the weather is boring, a couple of insignificant showers that didn't record anything in my Nylex. Minimums have been nice and bearable with maximums and low humidity making it very livable at the moment.

I had a bloke from Victoria ask me on Twitter what I did about snails in my garden? I told him we don't have any because they would boil in their shells if they ventured up this far north.
Show is here, V8s and the show shortly. Time for the germ laden visitors to start spreading their nasty germs around again.

Dropped to 11.9C at 8.00pm
Minimum of 6.9 yesterday and 8C on Wednesday. Man this isn't supposed to happen until 2nd week of July.
But I am enjoying it. 200mn rain event and frigid weather in June? Who would have picked that? Not me.

But why does my wife still want a ceiling fan on when its 7C?

Jebuz no posts since the 18th June. A couple of friends of our family are working in Japan as teachers under contract and will be living in Japan for 3 years and they are loving it. No car but public transport means they can get to where ever they want to without a hassle and they have a bar downstairs whos owner speaks English and has been to Australia.

I watched Landline yesterday with a feeling of dread. We have now entered a Neutral Phase meaning stuck between El Nino and La Nina and that means below average rainfall and higher temperatures for the next 3 months or so, so a decent wet season may not happen again this year. Bummer dudes.

I will be glad when we get back to the warmer weather, hate this cold stuff. Being a Mexican from south of the border originally, I like the hot weather, until it goes on for weeks and weeks.
Oh well should enjoy it while it lasts and I certainly like the lower power bill.
Hope we get some decent rain this coming season, sick of seeing it all going south all the time.

Townsville is nearly 4 deg above average for minimums though and nearly 2 deg above for maximums. A warmer than normal July .
