Fingers crossed for some reasonable falls in the coming days.

It is not unusual for us to get some handy dry season rain about this time of the year, but it generally comes from the West, not the East.

I don't care where it comes from, as long as it comes.

Then bring on the chill I say!

Morning all. Two foggy mornings in a row. Massive rainfalls predicted (yeah right) for the end of the week. Next major event will be a single digit minimum and then nada until December.

Flood watch issued

Initial Flood Watch for coastal catchments between Cairns and Gladstone, extending inland to parts of the Burdekin and Fitzroy catchments
Issued at 3:06 pm EST on Tuesday 16 May 2017
Issue Number: 1
A surface trough is likely to form in the Coral Sea near the southern tropical coast on Wednesday and then move slowly southwest onto the coast, providing a focus for increased shower and rain activity.
Widespread rainfall totals of 100 to 200 mm are forecast to occur across the watch area from Wednesday evening through to Friday evening, with isolated heavier totals up to 400 mm possible.
River level rises above the minor flood level are possible based on forecast rainfall. Heavy rainfall may also lead to localised flash flooding.
Catchments at risk within the Flood Watch area include the Mulgrave, Russell, Johnstone, Tully, Murray, Herbert, Bohle, Ross, Haughton, Don, Proserpine and Pioneer rivers, and parts of the Burdekin and Fitzroy rivers. For those catchments affected by ex-TC "Debbie" during March and April, flood levels during this event are expected to be significantly lower.

Whatever rain you TSV folk get,I hope you get it over your dam catchment.
Whatever it adds to the dam capacity, is a bonus.

Models seem to of backed off the totals a bit overnight. More believable now.

I think most of the moisture will fall south of our area, but beggars can't be choosers.

I hope I am wrong and a big deluge sits over the Woodstock area and fills the dam up.

According to EC we have to wait for that trough to the west to cross us to get the next lot of heavy rain then that's it.

44m overnight in West End .. had some noisy thunder too!

Makes me want to cry seeing what's happening to the south of us. Hopefully what's still due to come in from the west will give us some more rain.

Mick, could you tell me what geographic points, width and furthest point from the dam wall that would indicate were your dam catchment actually is.

I am 6 kilometres from the dam as the crow flies and have had 105mm in the last 24 hours to 3.30pm (when it started raining at my place yesterday). Yesterday was 38mm and 67mm emptied out of my Nylex at 3.30pm.

Dam wall has recorded 38mm since 9.00am this morning see http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/flood/townsville.shtml for details.

For sure this is the best widespread rain for the H&LB this season. Consistent totals extending from the coast to the inland parts - hope the next 24hrs delivers some more before sliding south. Not a drought breaker but will hopefully drop a few months supply into the dam. Enjoy it guys. Radar looks good for another burst : - )

Went down to Brisbane yesterday to attend an information session and tour at the BOM QLD office.

It was a great experience.
One of the biggest shocks to me was how small their office space is, and how few people were working there.

I was expecting a large office full of people, but it was a tiny office space with 4 people working.

The way the forecasts are created was interesting to learn:
Of those 4 people working, there was a person solely doing Marine and another solely doing Aviation forecasts.

The public forecasts for the next day ahead for the entire state are all put together by one person alone.
While the public forecasts for days 2 to 7 for the entire state are nearly entirely computer generated, with one person reviewing them and making any necessary edits to MetEye.

Having learnt that, I now understand why the forecasts can often change so drastically the day before.
I've seen plenty of occasions before where, for example, the forecast for Friday will be the same on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday prior, and then suddenly change dramatically on Thursday, the day before.

The accuracy of the "next day ahead" forecasts varies depending on who is working in that position on any given day.

The Brisbane office does all forecasts from Cardwell south to the border, while the Cairns office releases the forecasts for Cardwell north, to the tip of QLD and the Peninsula.

I knew the boys and girls in Townsville before the budget was cut and some lost their jobs. AND, (excuse the grammar) they no longer have 24 hours cover north from Brisbane - no funding. They did a good job in the past, but governments (of any persuasion) really do not understand what the BOM does or how important their work is. AND (excuse the grammar again), does any politician give BOM credance? Haven't heard any lately ... please prove me wrong if you can....

As David Lloyd George said famously: "If you want to succeed in politics, you must keep your conscience well under control."

It's goodnight from me and goodnight from him .......

i have seen a more detailed map for the catchment area, but be damned if i can find it now sorry. i should have saved it last time. its a pretty small catchment, basically goes inland to Calcium.

147mm since 0900hrs yesterday with a total of 184mm for the last 2 days and still 90 minutes until I can give a real 24 hour total.

For people who think this will somehow magically fill the dam it won't, we need in excess of 2000mm to even put a large dent in the stored capacity and probably double that to fill it. Latest dam level reading was 0500hrs 18/5/17 and it showed 16%. Possibly gone up by 1% overnight but there is no current reading for this morning.

Dam level has risen 36cm over last 2 days.

And there we have it Trav - jagged the rainfall overnight and this morning and we have a few months supply into the dam. At about 3.5% per month draw down hopefully around 3 extra months supply if we can get the 10% inflow. Unfortunately there was a reasonable amount of rain required to prime the catchments for runoff.

Brilliant event and not one we have seen for a long time. However as you say why cant this happen in summer when we might have seen 2 or 3 times the totals with a real monsoonal influence...grrrrr

Latest dam readings of the council website at 7am this morning:

Ross River Dam = 19%
Paluma Dam = 97%

And off the Sun Water website at 12 noon

Burdekin Falls Dam = 98.6%

NO WAY ON THIS PLANET SHOULD WE HAVE SUCH RIDICULOUS WATER RESTRICTIONS FOR TOWNSVILLE ..............

We are literally p*^s@+g our resources away .... time to stop and get real people - enough is enough !!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we all started watering all the time, the courts would be unable to cope and a revolution just might make the pollies sit up and take notice for the first time. We have waited far too long for this to be fixed.

Yes I was happy while it was raining, grumpy now though. We need a shed load more than we got and sure it will delay pumping by a couple of weeks but the fact remains that our present dam is woefully inadequate and it will never be anything but the best worst solution to our water security.

Yard is a swamp, gardens look water logged, sun birds are looking for a new nesting site as the old one was washed away when the rain gutters over flowed. Nice warm morning and I am quite happy. Dam is is showing an increase to 22% capacity.

Final total was 181mm in West End. Pretty good.

(I've just realised that I didn't put in the 22mm we had up to 11pm on the 17th! that changes my totals ... sorry folks.)

Ross River Dam = 22%
Paluma = 97% (no change currently from yesterday ?)
Burdekin Falls Dam = 101.7%

We might get a little more in the dams as the flood waters flow down from the catchment areas.

The weather fronts that met up over the coast were an anomaly at this time of year but brought us something we desperately needed.

Fun stuff - NOT
I think it was Channel 9 that said earlier in the week that Townsville was expecting severe flooding as the rain from Cyclone Debbie had left the Ross River Dam overflowing. (Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story!!)

Can anyone better this???

Well I had to explain on Facebook to friends and family and managed to convince most of them that we had 1mm of rain, that the maximum wind gust I got was 15kph and that no the dam hadn't been filled up as the cyclone was 200klms south of us. Having to explain how the rain falls during a cyclone was a pain but most of them got it in the end. I posted a photo of Ross Dam a couple of days after Debbie to show how dry the dam was.
As to media getting things wrong weather wise is nothing new. This is what happens when there are no local news reporters on site who can convince the capital cities new services that we actually exist.

Anything north of Bowen basically had a dismal wet season, and if it wasn't for TC Debbie, our YTD would of been at 800mm rather than 1875mm

Hey RC dont bag the council.
We all know there descion to build a stadium before a dam will help townsville.
As games wont last long due to ball being lost in between cracks in dirt on field. Which means less water drunk by patrons. Which means less water used..good for dam
Lmao

Can we please stop this nonsense about the stadium. The money for that was pledged by both parties in Federal Government during the lead up to the elections. At the same time Bob Katter sought and was granted funding for the Hells Gate Dam feasibility study which has a preliminary report already tabled and the extended report is awaiting completion.

The stadium was directly funded via last years budget and has nothing to do with any funding for the dam. Yes its a lot of money. So what? It was given via an act of parliament so to access the funds instead for a dam it would need to be sent back to parliament for revocation (and both major parties would have to agree) and it would need to pass 3 readings to do this. Lower house, senate and the lower house and then the funds could be released, now once that happens the government is under no obligation to reallocate funding for the stadium at a later date nor would there be any obligation to fund a new dam/pipe line and instead the money would go to the next most urgent requirement.

So the chance is that if it was to be revoked zero dollars would be spent in Townsville, zero jobs created, zero taxes paid and the flow on would be zero as well if you tried to recoup the funds from the stadium. Yeah I can just see that happening not. It would be political suicide for any party who even attempted to convince the public this would be a good idea.

Meanwhile the weather is boring, a couple of insignificant showers that didn't record anything in my Nylex. Minimums have been nice and bearable with maximums and low humidity making it very livable at the moment.

I had a bloke from Victoria ask me on Twitter what I did about snails in my garden? I told him we don't have any because they would boil in their shells if they ventured up this far north.
Show is here, V8s and the show shortly. Time for the germ laden visitors to start spreading their nasty germs around again.

Dropped to 11.9C at 8.00pm
Minimum of 6.9 yesterday and 8C on Wednesday. Man this isn't supposed to happen until 2nd week of July.
But I am enjoying it. 200mn rain event and frigid weather in June? Who would have picked that? Not me.

But why does my wife still want a ceiling fan on when its 7C?

Jebuz no posts since the 18th June. A couple of friends of our family are working in Japan as teachers under contract and will be living in Japan for 3 years and they are loving it. No car but public transport means they can get to where ever they want to without a hassle and they have a bar downstairs whos owner speaks English and has been to Australia.

I watched Landline yesterday with a feeling of dread. We have now entered a Neutral Phase meaning stuck between El Nino and La Nina and that means below average rainfall and higher temperatures for the next 3 months or so, so a decent wet season may not happen again this year. Bummer dudes.

I will be glad when we get back to the warmer weather, hate this cold stuff. Being a Mexican from south of the border originally, I like the hot weather, until it goes on for weeks and weeks.
Oh well should enjoy it while it lasts and I certainly like the lower power bill.
Hope we get some decent rain this coming season, sick of seeing it all going south all the time.

Townsville is nearly 4 deg above average for minimums though and nearly 2 deg above for maximums. A warmer than normal July .

not a surprise i guess, but this turned out to be a real fizzer. models backed off big time 3 days ago, but was still hoping for some decent showers.

Hard to believe it will get any worse, but we are now entering the driest part of the year lol.

At least ENSO is showing some early signs that the coming storm/wet season could be better than the last few years. Fingers crossed.

A massive amount of dry air will enter eastern Australia during the weekend. We should feel it here on Sunday morning. Will be interesting to see how much it affects temperatures. Going for 30 tomorrow ahead of the change.

Well folks that's it for me in the Towers. Will be moving this week to Mission Beach.

As much as I would love to stay and wallow in the dust with you all, I am afraid I have taken the opportunity to graze on some green grass for a while.

I have learnt a lot in this thread over the years, so thankyou all for that. I am not going too far and will drop by from time to time to say G'day.

All the best in the brown belt.

I heard a Storm Bird this morning. First I've heard for the season. This is a good time of the year. Temperatures are heading in the right direction and hopefully some decent convective activity on the way in the coming months.

i dont have access to long term climate model DU but going by historical records Townsville should be on par for average at least.

the long term SST modelling is pretty good looking with an improving cool tongue over eastern pacific and warm waters remaining over the west.

Cloud over the summit of Mt. Stuart this afternoon indicated a half decent dew point which was borne out by the observations of around 20C although 100km or so inland the DP was in single figures.

Looks like it's going to be quite a dry fortnight coming up, obviously not unexpected at this time of year.

Really looking forward to seeing what this storm season brings, given the developing ENSO conditions at the moment (ie, leaning towards La Nina).

Less than 2 weeks to go for our cruise to NZ. First landfall will be Milford Sound and a days cruising up the fjords. I can't wait. There is still snow on the peaks, average daytime max is 9C and overnight is -4C. Natures aircon. 2 week cruise and then a 4 day stop over in Sydney catching up with our youngest son and doing all the tourist stuff. No I'm not going to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Hi guys,

I havent been on here for ages, but I just popped in as I noticed that BOM have activated 3 new AWS stations around our area this afternoon!

One of them is on Mount Stuart

Yes great news they are finally activated. i contacted the Minister for Environments office about 6 months ago, they advised the army training area at Mt Stuart would be getting an AWS on line, but looks like we have picked up some other stations inland too.
and about time too. the argument i mentioned in my letter to the Minister was that places like Mackay, Cairns and Darwin, all smaller in population had multiple AWS sites to get a better representation of actual temps away from the airport sites but Townsville didnt.

Good find PVW! The Mt. Stuart station is actually on the foothills to the immediate north of Ross River dam.

The dew point observations for the Mt. Stuart station are very suspect. A highly predictable diurnal variation with low values during the night and high during the day totally out of character with surrounding stations.

Storm just south of Charters Towers tonight. Got some decent rain at my place from it, haven't checked yet but I'd say somewhere between 5-10mm.

bit of drizzle about this morning, nothing heavy.
noticed the paper ran a story on tsv missing out on the rain, guess they need to fill space considering we were never in the mix to get any anyway. comparing a rain event in bundaberg to townsville is like comparing rain events between melbourne and sydney.

smoke and dust.
temperature inversion is trapping the smoke and dust in the lower atmosphere.

looking promising, tonights models backing up the system with some good falls locally. biggest concern with this weather system is a surface low developing as the upper system moves northwards, certainly dont want that happening.

models starting to come together with a deep upper low to our WNW, still looking good for a decent rain event, though i seriously dont believe we will get the 100-200mm forecast. will be happy with 50mm honestly.
more importantly, with the bundy system last week, this event now unfolding hopefully signs the weather is changing in time for the wet.

Time to leave my dry season hibernation. Lookinh promising from Sunday onwards. The storm possibilities for my area look awesome for sunday. Ive had about 15mm all dry season. I got no water in my tanks. Bore seems that its dried out. This event if it unfolds as predicted or even vlose to the predicted amounts I will be happy.

system is starting to show signs of kicking in locally already. this arvo forecast upgraded to storm chance, but i think they will be south of us. light showers from east.
still hoping the upper trough remains well west of us, bring in a decent NE flow in the uppers.

im up to 37mm for this event so far over 3 days, should be happy but feel a bit ripped off with heavier falls possible if that upper low had stayed 200km west of us.

hopefully we get some decent falls tonight.

Some great falls to our North, Poverty Hill (just South of Ingham) has had 128mm in 4.5 hours.

Massive feed band stretching North to Cooktown is currently feeding heavy rainfall onto the coast from Mission Beach to Ingham.

Hopefully the activity locally increases into this afternoon/evening.

STW has been issued for Northern parts of the Herbie Burdie:

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Palm Island, Ingham, Innisfail, Cardwell, Tully and Babinda.

Heavy rainfall is possible in coastal areas between Ayr and Mackay during the next 24 hours, most likely overnight tonight.

Weather Situation:
An upper low lies over northern Queensland, which will slowly weaken during the next 24 hours. A surface trough lies along the Central and Capricornia coasts.

Areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms, which may lead to flash flooding, are possible over coastal areas between Ayr and Mackay, chiefly overnight tonight. 6 hourly rainfall totals of 120mm to 180mm are possible, with isolated 6 hourly totals over 200mm.

Locations which may be affected include Mackay, Proserpine, Hamilton Island, Bowen, and Ayr.

Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.

Rainfall rates have eased between Gladstone and Bundaberg, and the severe weather warning for that area is CANCELLED. However, dangerous river flooding is still occurring in the area, with flood warnings current. Refer to those products for further details.

A separate Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for thunderstorms currently occurring between Cairns and Townsville; refer to that product for further details.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Wednesday.

Out of hibernation...

areas west of Ingham have received 180-250mm of rain since lunchtime, and south of town up to 150mm over the same period. Several roads flooded. The highway south of Ingham at Francis Ck could be at risk - several people on Facebook commenting the water is close to the road.

Water everywhere between Ingham & Rollingstone. Creeks are torrents, surface water at Bambaroo Hills, and lapping the road at Helens Hill plains

Just letting you guys know that my little weather companion Dax passed away yesterday at 13.5 years old. I'm pretty devastated at the moment, I will miss her dearly. Buried her under her favourite frangipani here this morning, she'll always have free run of 'the green place' and keep a watchful eye on it for us. Rest peacefully my little angel.

I've moved to Maggie Island and I often think of you RD as I pass through Bilyana on my way to Cairns. I remember that beautiful garden all blown away - I am sue by now it would be back to stunning again.
Hope you dont mind that I have popped back in after all this time - I have been watching, just wasn't able to comment till i remembered all my details.

Thanks for your kind words!

Yes, Bilyana is pretty much back to how it was before Yasi, you'd never know that a cat 5 had shredded the place. The rapid rate of regrowth never ceases to amaze me in the wet tropics.

Gidday all. Finally back on deck after our cruise to NZ and 3 day visit to Sydney. I have no idea on what days the rain fell but my Nylex had 139mm from this event.

So I picked up Flu type A 5 days before the cruise finished and spent 3 days in bed so missed out on a couple of excursions. (I also got Carpal Tunnel syndrome in my right and from over using my cane on board and while walking and rolled my ankle at Taronga Park Zoo, slipped on the steps of the Opera House and threatened to murder the next bloody Asian with a selfie stick that hit me in the head with it).

The excursions I did get to go on where pretty good although spending 3 bloody hours on a bus to get to Christchurch was a bit much. Milford Sound was everything I expected. Got to the entrance just on dawn. Still had snow on the lower cliffs and bitterly cold. -2C at sunrise according to the ships automated weather app. Very quiet, strong breeze made it bloody uncomfortable but I won't probably get another chance so stuck with it until I turned blue.

NZ was brilliant. Loved the rain, freezing cold, the greenness and people. The cruise was good but would I do it again? Nah. Too rushed to get from one port to another 1. We are planning to go back and do at least 1 more trip to NZ. Fly drive for about 2 weeks on both islands would be ideal.
