Just spotted the Ag Station reading, a rounded -5, the decimal point will be finalised later.

Yeah thats chilly.
Reminds me of may 1996.
Was building in Jindy and we had some cracker frosts.
Solid slabs of ice ontop of the exposed floor.

Not quite - the -7.5 was at the airport, whose May record is -8.1 (the town site is warmer). Still impressive, especially for early May.

We've been corrected to -4.5 certainly the coolest so far this year for us.

I notice Cooma Ap has come back online now. Blair do you know if last night's obs from there can be recovered? Cooma town had a rounded min of -4 but I reckon the airport would've been cooler. Dew points were already at -4 by 9:30 so I think under calm conditions it could've lowered to -7 to even -10.

Depends what the issue was. If it was a communications issue then the data might be recoverable. There aren't usually huge differences between the two Cooma sites unless the wind drops out at one and not the other, so I'd be surprised if the airport had anything too dramatic.

Thanks for the response. Yeah upon further inspection I don't think it would've been too impressive as the surrounding PWS's were around 0 to -4, except Bredbo at -6.

This forum doesn't believe in calm conditions, thermal conditioning and radiative cooling so it more than likely didn't drop any further.

But ofcourse the actual scientific minds around here could believe that. I am extremely skeptical about that Goulburn reading.

It only got down to 4.3 degrees here this morning and was already at 5 degrees at 8:45pm the night before thanks to a perfectly still cloudless night.

Goulburn Airport does have a history of occasionally producing exceptionally low numbers (the old site there had a -14 in 1971).

Hey Warren, nice to see you back.

I don't see any reason to doubt it, Goulburn Ap is just a very cold site on winter nights- often the coldest in NSW. It has the perfect ingredients for cool air drainage with a creek nearby and slightly higher ground in every compass direction, especially when dew points are low enough to allow the temp to drop drastically.

We dropped to 3.0C here but yet at 8:45, we would've been at around 8 or 9 degrees. We slowly dropped all night, to 7.6 at 12am and then I checked at nearly 2am and it was 5.4. So I guess something stopped it cooling further at your place, maybe the urban heat effect or DP's were perhaps too high.

Pretty chilly old arvo out of the sun. Seems about 15 or so now. Wind feels cooler
I've just flipped the heater on (mainly for the cat). The house hasn't warmed up at all today.

Yeah it never really warmed up today, just stayed cold and a bit breezy, but sunny. It's great in the sun and out of the wind. Temp is 16.3.

A fairly calm cool cloudy day here, when the sun was out it was very pleasant out in it.

It certainly was WR, but by late this arvo the surf had doubled in size and believe it or not there were a couple of tow-in surfers out there, personally I think they were far to lazy to swim. At best the biggest wave would have been about 5 tops!!

There are a few showers off the Illawarra coast and further out to sea off Sydney's South, moving Northwards. Some look heavy. They look likely to affect coastal suburbs later tonight.

Well the clouds are moving over and risen the temp to 9.0. Was 7.6 about an hour ago.

I'd love to see Goulburns weather station then, because the min only recorded -1.9c at the airport, my bet would be the thermometer is either made up or stuck to metal which would have easily sunken to well below freezing.

You mean Goulburn TAFE only recorded -1.9. That would because it is higher (670m compared to 640m at the Ap) and I assume Goulburn would be a big enough city to get some sort of urban heat island effect. Doesn't seem suspicious to me. On such dry and cold nights (as in low DP) like last night, there can be huge variations in a small area. Also such cold air just sinks right to the lowest area and keeps cooling unless the dew point stops it.
