Saturday 13th May at about 15:00 - 16:00 Off Batemans Bay NSW.
I would have said bushfire if it was over land (and summer).
What can it be? Is the Navy making smoke?

False echoes are fairly common. Smoke, dust, virga or unusual atmospheric conditions (temperature / wind / pressure) can cause them, or malfunctioning in the radar. False echoes tend to lack any structure or coherent movement. Of course real showers might remain near stationary for an hour or more.

I just had a look at the radar on the 6 hour loop on this site. I think the showers (and later storms) out to sea off the South Coast are real.

I might just add that the 4:00PM synoptic chart shows a trough off the NSW South Coast.
