The following is quoted from the NSW / ACT forecast issued 4:30PM Wednesday May 17:

Quote:
A broad low pressure system near South Australia links with a trough extending to central parts of the continent, drawing moisture southwards. The trough and low will slowly move east and generate a significant rain bearing system, with thunderstorm activity, to much of New South Wales over the next couple of days. Rain and thunder will extend to areas west of The Divide during Thursday, and throughout during Friday. The system will have weakened by Saturday, with rain areas shifting to the east. An easing trend is expected Sunday as a high pressure system extends across the State.

The totals aren't huge, certainly not compared with media reporting, but it is set to produce useful falls across a wide swathe of the state.

Forecast totals for the period May 18-21 (millimetres)
Code:
Sydney 20 - 42 mm
Penrith 19 - 37
Bathurst 20 - 30
Newcastle 10 - 22
Bathurst 20 - 40
Wagga 17 - 24

You can add 21-45mm for Canberra for this rain event. I'll be looking forward to that if it ever eventuates seeing as we've only had 3mm so far this month and that came after a near three week dry spell.

Interesting to watch the two cloud masses edge ever so slightly closer together.

Should run a sweep on when they will meet each other smile

Happy thoughts of a job well done smile

She's joined at the top for sure.

Each run lately has the BOM upping our rain for this event. It might actually be damp here the next couple of days.

Better get some wood under cover. smile

Less duration and more precip sounds great. Let's get this rain over and done with but if it rains it might as well pour.

Me too. Would be even better to get it all in a one hour storm.

Sydney now expecting 19-37mm, Bathurst 28 - 50.

GFS is now showing a proper cold outbreak at the start of calendar Winter. We shall see, it may vanish in the next run.

Still a nice pic though Eddy. Well it has been a very warm night (relative of course() in the city in Wollongong. Still 19c there quite incredible. Wearing a tdhirt was no problem there on those temps. A little bit cooler at home with 13C with no easterly wind. Ohhh the rain is coming, you could feel the chanve in weather yesterday afternoon with cloudy and moderate easterly. Winter where are you? Tropical absolutely tropical and it's great. I mean finally a night that ain't cold.

Good picture Eddy.

I saw some convective cloud about yesterday morning as I drove across Sydney to an appointment in Bass Hill. The sky looked a bit like it often does in February, a watery sky, hazy with small to middle sized cumulus clouds. Didn't see any rain.

It was warm night on the coastal strip, didn't drop below 17-18 all night at coastal stations. The sea temp off Sydney has been close to 21.0 in recent days, slightly above the average of 20.7: MHL SST Sydney. At these places the record will show yesterday's 9:00AM reading as the minimum, e.g. an unremarkable 14.8 at OH.

Was surprisingly warm at tennis last night. Quite sweaty in shorts and polo shirt.

Nice to be back at tennis after a couple of months off with a solid bout of knee-monia. My fitness levels though deserted me terribly in that time off. frown

A bit of very light precip this morning. Enough to just moisten the ground but possibly not measure.

Very mild overnight.

Thanks Steve777

My minimum of 14c also occurred at 9am yesterday morning where as most of the night the temp was around 16-17c mark.

2.5mm in the 24 hours to 9am.

Some useful falls in the West of the State, including 42mm at Hay Airport, 34mm at Hillston, 40 at Louth (on the Darling downstream from Bourke). Falls seem to have been fairly patchy, however.

There's been a bit of light rain here. Radar shows showers moving down from the North, nothing much near Sydney at this stage apart from a big blob out to sea.

They are very good numbers Steve. For Hay, that 42 took them to about 114 ytd. So 42 in one hit is an enormous fall in their context smile

We have at least 2 and possibly 3 distinct layers of cloud building or coming through here now. It FEELS like it will rain, not OVERLY convinced by the LOOK but as more and more low level cloud develops it will look better.

Quite a slow build it seems.

Darker and heavier looking to my NW as I would expect as it slowly wanders across.

I really look forward to some RAIN, it will be nice to smell, hear and see smile

Its been dry the last hour or so, but the Noreaster is still hammering in and considering all this cloud about the temp has managed to crack the 20c mark.

And some people never learn on the roads in wet weather!!

The lightest of little spits outside at the moment, can just feel it on skin.

However - can clearly see more promising cloud for perhaps light showers almost on me.

Lower level cloud really increasing now.

The 3am post is hideous. I clearly remember writing it but it looked normal to me then. crazy

Yeah Homer a big feed seems to help. smile

Lol Eddy, I have to go to Uni soon though. But as they say, the best way to cure a hangover is to drink more alcohol. poke

First time I've had a hangover in quite a while actually, usually I'm fine the next day.

Less than 1mm here so far. Orange 3mm is a little better.

Hoping for more later.

Getting nervous about the cloud position, hoping we get 10mm at least even though forecast was for more than that.

"U" having fun with your sub comments D? smile

With help from the jet stream high pressure is fending the low over southern Vic south east fast and this event will fizz quick in these parts. It will rain heavy out to sea though

Nice band of rain currently approaching Sydney from the north.
Could be some isolated heavy falls if it holds together.

Good idea Donzah, although I'm not a scotch man.
Think I'll pour myself a bundy and coke, and then have a few glasses of red tonight listening to the rain on the roof.
Sounds delightful on a Friday evening.

Currently very steady rain here with occasional heavy bursts.
16.5 degrees and a light NE'er blowing. Feeling quite cool outside, even though everything is coming from the north.

Wonder if WR will be up for it again tonight?? smile

Homer, I actually tried your KFC idea for lunch and wow did it help. And yes I will probably be going out tonight. If no one asks me I won't go but someone always talks me into it.

Not a fan of scotch or any strong alcohol really. Vodka is awful by itself, although vodka + coffee is an interesting mix. smile

I've worked out the perfect roast potato

par boiled in chicken stock, till the edges crumble
then drained and cooled
The rolled in sunflower oil and seasoned
then roasted on a Pizza tray. doesn't transfer heat , causing uneven cooking.

*raining here, but just set in and 1mm at most an hour.

I do par boil my spuds, but I like the sound of your recipe, I will have to give that a go!!

Rain has eased off here for the time being also rainfall totals haven't amounted to much, just 1.6mm so far.

This event, such as it was, seems to be over, with the last of the rain bands now out to sea. It was pretty much business as usual for the middle part of the coast, although many inland centres did quite well, for example:

Code:
ACT: 30 - 50+ mm
Bathurst AP: 18 - a bit disappointing
Orange AP: 16 - ditto
Forbes: 38
Riverina: 15 - 40+

Far South Coast had many falls over 50, a few over 100.

For Syndey, nothing much - 10-20 in the East, 5-10 in the West.

Its seems like that Steve777, I wouldn't be surprised of a late afternoon thundery shower.

I recorded 5.7mm in the 24 hours to 9am. Rain had stopped here about 8am and the cloud had moved offshore by 9.30am, very warm in the sun and the temp is nudging 22c.

Very good falls indeed, it was much needed in those areas too.

We had 25mm here which is a respectable amount and about what I was expecting in this area. Nice that it's cleared off quickly though.

I agree Eddy, a great event for many areas, especially for what is a very dry time of year in areas west of the Divide.

Yep, previous wettest May day was 40.0mm.

They had the trough stalling a bit on the coast which didnt happen. You could see what was going to happen as high pressure took hold to the north west of the low pressure centre in sw victoria.

Possibly, but in the terms of rainfall I think they did pretty well!! Plus it was never really our event as such, more inland event imo.

From the Bom late this afternoon.
Weather Situation
A weak low pressure lies along the New South Wales south and central coasts and over northeastern inland. The trough is moving northeast and weakening further as a cold front approaches from the west. The front will cross the state during Tuesday with a high pressure system expected to move in it"s wake over southeastern Australia on Monday.

All good Knot!! I understand where you're coming from, 2 weeks out from winter and its still early Autumn so to speak. Yes I'm loving it but at the same time I'm wanting some serious fronts to come through too!!
But I also know that winters here on the far north Hunter coast/Lower Mid Nth Coast can be very short at times.

Here's hoping to some decent fronts!!

Now I better get back to finishing my Baked dinner!!

It's a record for the current airport site at Tamworth (records, 1992 to present). But not a record if you include the history of the previous Tamworth Airport site, 1.7kms away (records, 1876 to 1993), which has a May daily rainfall record of 88.9mm (27th May 1889). The 44.4mm is still notable as it is the wettest May day in 37 years and also ranks in the top 8 wettest May days in the combined history of the two sites:

I have been a bit morose about the lack of cold fronts Eddy. Probably coming across as a bit of a whinger. Its just disappointing for a winter lover like myself to see nothing happening by now.
Still around a very balmy 20 here. T shirts and short sleeves eveywhere

Winter will happen in one way, shape or form albeit probably very short in this neck of the woods!!

This is looking potentially much better for upcoming winter fronts: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/precip/CWlink/daily_ao_index/aao/new.aao_index_ensm.html

Reckon if there is one thing that will help the chances of a decent cold front coming through it is the AA dropping right down smile

GFS is hinting at a significant cool change around the end of the month, with the blue line over Sydney on June 1 and the 850 zero isotherm passing just to the South. Also looks to be a weak cool change around next Thursday.

Is this significant cool change still on long range GFS, Steve?

That would be right in time for winter and a nice change from the current weather pattern. Anyway a superb day down here, about 21C. The winds are from the southerly quadrants once again.

GFS is still showing a weak cool change on May 25, with another weak change on May 30 a a more substantial change for June 1/2, with the blue line North of Sydney and 850 temps over Sydney of -1/-2 at 2200 on the 2nd. Cool conditions persist to the end of the run (June 5).

Access has the weak cool change overnight 24/25th, bouncing back to warm after a day or so. There might be a cooler change on the horizon at the end of the run (30th).

It's very early days, it could all change.

Have to disagree about the BOM doing well. A big area of the central West basically missed out. This was not as big of a general rain event out here as they were talking about. We were lucky to get under a shower to give us 15mm, next door 4mm. Far from the general 20-40mm with islolated falls of 100mm they were talking about leading up to the event.

I never saw rain falling over the two days, though I did hear it for a while late Friday night. Around 5-10 mm total.

Biggest miscalculation ever, large swathes of the central west recorded next to nothing.

Big fat 0mm.

Airport here about 18mm as mentioned by Steve.

Ag Station showing a nicer 26. Patchy would seem to be the word for many areas. smile

It was awfully nice to finally get some precip again though.
