Maybe in the good old days fronts were good everywhere back when the highs were further north in general.

Fantastic day, I'm sitting in the sun in the Botanic Gardens (it's across the road from Uni) and it's great. Light easterly wind, 19C. Wonderful.

If Perth is getting cold fronts it means the LWT is amplified there. Which is bad for snow , as the fronts are on their way back "down" when they head towards the Alps.
Ideally you want a large ridge stable to the sw of Perth.
Then an area of low pressure near tasmania.
It creates a "train track" down towards the colder air.

Its a misnomer to say that the alps are reliant on big weather for snow. Duration, precip and wind direction both at upper levels and down lower are the biggest IMO factors.
Talking purely resort based. Ski resorts are built in the lee of a range. So wind hitting that range at the right speed and angle is critical.
Its why Perisher does well off NW and Thredbo well off SW/S wind directions.

Thanks for the great explanation Donzah.

And a quote from the snow thread:

This is the type of setup that brings big snowfalls to lower areas on the ST's and CT's. Not saying this one will, but these types of scenarios where there's left over cold air and moisture are great for low level snow.

Look at 2015. Strong cold front on the 12th, cold air for days and then a cutoff low with even colder air on the 17th. 20-25cm in the BM's and even up to 25cm on the Southern Highlands too.

I think June 5th has some ST and CT potential.

When the Hume was closed at Berrima? I was in Jindy at the time. Had friends stuck in traffic jams for hours and hours.
I drove home a few days later and there were still lumps of ice bashed off the freeway.

Yeah that would've been the one. If I remember correctly EddyG was also stuck on the Highway on the way to or from Canberra.

I think Mittagong only got like 4cm, Bowral maybe 10cm but my grandparents at Mandemar at 730m west of Berrima got 25cm. Berrima itself got a pretty decent total but I'm not sure how much.

Totally agree.

We had a top of 18.8c, it didn't feel fresh, quite pleasant really.

You're not going to get forecasts for Shooters/Trickett/Bindo/Porters etc so I wouldn't even try. The weather station is in Oberon and forecasts for 1100m+ are guess work at best.

Just last year there were snowfalls that weren't even reported/forecast at Shooters and Trickett that I caught.

Educated guesswork though. Yr.no seems to nail that.

You would be correct WR.

I got stuck in that traffic has you go up that big hill above the Nattai River, I was there for a while with some scattered sleet falling, there was some patches of snow lying on the ground there. Did a U-turn and went back to the Church Street overpass and went through the town of Mittagong, there wasn't a great deal of snow on the ground to the north of the town, but the further I drove south the more snow that was on the ground. I managed to get back on the Highway just south of Mittagong and that's where I had taken that little video clip. There was solid snow on the ground right to about Sutton Forest and from there to just south of Marulan next to nothing and some patches around Goulburn.
And a pic from just south of Mittagong before the on ramp to the highway.

Yep I know that exact scenery, great photo. I almost certain it's less than 700m ASL there.

Snow pics are great. I wish we got snow here in winter. Hot summers and snowy winters is my kind of climate. cool

I reckon you would too.

Even I could live in Bowral. It would be what 40 minutes to the beach? Best of both worlds.

Yeah its a nice spot Bowral.

To Retire

I moved here (from NZ) in 89. Bowral always reminded me of a mid NZ kinda town.
Has real seasons.
