A thread to discuss next weeks cold front and compare two major forecasting models that are used.

This morning GFS, on the 16 day forecast, has this corner of West&South Gippsland down for 34mm of rain next Wednesday 7th June and much of Southern and Eastern Vic receiving heavy rain.

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/agriculture/?lt=wzstate&lc=vic&c=14day&rc=14day&p=168

ACCESS has the rain bearing front still out South of the Bight.

http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/viewer/index.shtml

Interested to see how this one evolves and the predominate High reacts.

Ha Ha - thanks for starting this thread Samboz smile

Would the GFS 16 day chart run show data for next Wed (7/6/17 - day 5 from now)?

I missed seeing this mornings GFS run, here's it latest guess for us next Wednedsay(ish):

.....hope the latest proves correct because I'm playing golf at Corowa Sun-Tue next week! :;

While I'm not a snow skier (..well not any more), but I'm rapt at the fantastic start for this years snow season! - reminds me of stories I've read on the prolonged snow-induced hardships of those building the Snowy Hydro Scheme all those years ago.

The 34mm had dropped off the 16day (Oz forecast) within 1/2hr and looking at the models tonight one could be forgiven for thinking the thread was a figment of the imagination they have changed so much.

Quite a few were seduced into the scenario!

Stand by for more exciting news from the studio grin

ACCESS at this moment is 3 1/2days, ie only ACCESS REGIONAL for the full AUS model, usually 7 when it includes ACCESS GLOBAL.

Never seen that before!

GFS OK today - http://www.weatherzone.com.au/synoptic.jsp?d=6

Latest GFS and this mornings AccG (still too far out for AccR), at this stage, are showing only coastal drizzle for mid-late next week.

....he says while selfishly hoping that there'll be plenty of anti-cyclonic gloom early next week to prevent the Corowa golf course experiencing -5 C frosts!

In keeping with the thread OP, GFS & ACCESS are fairly similiar this morning with very little rain on the horizon.

BOM forecasts snow for peaks Mon->Wed incl., given the meagre rain fall it will be interesting to see how much snow eventuates.

Should be OK on the course P.

Scattered cloud and a cool morning, just a little above frost temp & calm.

ACCESS has some rain coming thru from the S/W and plenty of cold air over the next 5 or so days. Best falls in the far East, say ORBOST on.

Snow Mon above 1300m, Tue 900m, Thur 1400m.

GFS 2mm over the next week here and round 25mm along coastal East Gipp.

Reached a top of 16.4C here in Belgrave today. There were a few sunny breaks, but otherwise it was a cold, rather dark and mostly cloudy day, minus a beautiful sunrise over Ferntree Gully, Boronia, and Bayswater on my way to work this morning. smile

We've had two bands of pre-frontal showers this evening over my side of Melbourne. The first band arrived just as I reached Ringwood on my way home from work at Box Hill around 5:15pm and didn't clear off until after I reached home at about 6pm. The next band swept into my area around 7:15pm and lasted roughly half an hour, forcing the postponement of my tennis lesson; the rain was quite heavy at times, with 1.1mm recorded so far! smile

And now that the appetisers have been cleared away, the main course is arriving! The front itself should hit within minutes!! =D

Currently around 10C.

The front has arrived, heavy rain starting up once again! grin

Couldn't get a good look at Mt. Wellington today due to cloud but suspect it may have a good cover of snow.

Reached a top of 13.6C here in Belgrave today. A cold, damp, wretched old winter's day in Melbourne, but good thing I was indoors for much of the day. smile

We had a few further showers up until lunchtime, both during the morning commute (particularly in Ringwood), and at work in Box Hill; the rain was coming in at a bit of an angle at times btw. An additional 1.1mm of rain collected here at home.

Thankfully the showers cleared in time for my evening tennis lesson, but the air had a real sharp chill to it! eek

Currently around 8C.

Another calm coolsih morn' with another 3.5mm in the gauge - 7.5mm for this non event, quite handy rain given low rainfall of about 140mm for the entire year.

Neither ACCESS, EC or GFS have any rain in the next week or so around here.

The weak front tomorrow will drop light falls in W/Vic eg Horsham forecast 4mm.

No rain to speak of up this way but some pretty nippy mornings, with this morning pushing -1! and fog. Dry but cold.. need some rain - not a lot as the frost is sucking up the moisture.

Reached a top of 15.5C here in Belgrave today. It stayed dry and mostly fine (but with increasing cloud, although the Sun felt nice) up until 3pm while I was in Dandenong and later Springvale. Then the front hit, bringing gloomy, showery conditions with chill winds that lasted well into the evening.

The last round of showers over the past hour was particularly heavy, with a peak rainfall rate of 15.7mm/hr. Collected 4.2mm in total so far. More showers to come tonight, judging by the radar. smile

Currently around 8C. Looking forward to heading to Corryong, Northeast Victoria tomorrow night for the Queen's Birthday long weekend! smile

Overnight low of 7.4C, it was a dark, gloomy, cold, wet 9C in Belgrave when I left for work about half an hour, with fog/low cloud and light showers/drizzle. poke

Collected another 2.1mm of rain during the night, so 6.3mm in total for the past 24 hours! smile

Hey g'day guys! Reporting from Corryong, Northeast Victoria. smile

I was stuck at work all day long, so I was forced to miss another beautiful sunny winter's day but ah well.

I left Box Hill around 5pm and caught the train to Lilydale where I joined my family (having driven up from Belgrave).

By about 6pm we departed metropolitan Melbourne and headed north up the Melba Highway (with unsurprisingly heavy traffic headed towards Lake Eildon and the snowfields) to Yea. Then we veered northwest along a somewhat quieter Goulburn Valley Highway to Seymour for dinner at about 7:30pm.

By 8pm we were heading northbound on the M31 Hume Freeway (Melbourne-Sydney). Two hours later, in spite of even more insane traffic as far as Wangaratta, we arrived at Albury/Wodonga to refuel the car and for a 45-minute break; it felt nice being able to briefly slip across the Murray River into NSW/ACT once more! smile

At about 10:45pm we proceeded east along the Murray Valley Highway, reaching Corryong by midnight. smile

Weatherwise it was generally a cold, calm, clear, moonlit night during the drive north.

Temperatures were around 10C in Melbourne's outer eastern suburbs and the Yarra Valley until after sunset and then began to plummet. It was around 7C through the Yea River and Goulburn River Valleys, but briefly nudged back up to 10C in Seymour.

The mercury continued to drop as we headed northeast towards the Border region. It was about 8C in Euroa, then 6C in Benalla, Glenrowan and Wangaratta. By the time we arrived at Albury/Wodonga it had dipped to 5C.

East of the Border region and Lake Hume, the cold air bit even harder! From Koetong and Shelley right through to Corryong it plunged to 2-3C, with patchy frost and dew, plus very heavy fog at times, mainly in Berringama, so thick at times that we slowed down from 100km/h to around 70km/h! eek

Only other things worth mentioning were: a lovely moonrise during the train ride through the Melbourne suburbs of Croydon and Mooroolbark to Lilydale around 5:45pm; light mist around Glenrowan, Wangaratta (with the stench of smoke), and Cudgewa; a bit of gusty southeast wind in Wodonga and neighbouring Bandiana; and some low cloud clinging to the NSW Snowy Mountains.

Going for an icy 0C here in Corryong tonight, with locally severe frost and patchy fog, followed by a sunny high of 14C tomorrow afternoon! smile

Currently around 4C out at nearby Khancoban.

Great trip report ASF.

Nice day here, I only recorded 15C but it felt much warmer in the calm sunshine at Royal Maffra GC!

Cheers Petros! smile

Here's my report from here in Corryong for today:

According to Weatherzone and the BOM, it plunged to -1.5C at the local airport this morning.

I set the alarm on my smartphone for dawn at 7am in the hopes of snapping up some pics of frost and/or fog. When I peaked through the window, it looked like nothing more than just a low overcast, so I went back to sleep lol. poke

My bad! A friend of mine who lives here in town said it was sunny around 7:30am, then she saw fog roll in from the east, and then it cleared as quickly as it came! smile

Anyway...

The fog steadily retreated towards the north (in the Tooma/Tumbarumba direction) as the morning progressed, and by 1pm it was completely gone. smile

And aside from extensive high cloud, as a result of the ECL over NSW/ACT, that moved down from the northeast during the day (although it was mainly confined to the northern half of the sky), the Upper Murray enjoyed a fine, crisp, cool afternoon, with an estimated high of around 14-15C. Thanks to the lack of wind, the Sun felt very pleasant! smile

The weather was perfect for walking, and for taking a quick mid-afternoon drive with my dad to nearby Towong on the Murray River to see some snow coated on the Kosciuszko ridge. smile

The high cloud I mentioned earlier helped to create a beautiful winter sunset over Cudgewa and the Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park at 5pm! smile

As soon as the sunset was over I dashed back indoors, as it was getting very cold quite quickly! It was 8C at 5:30pm and my hands were turning red; five hours later when I last checked it was 3C. Expecting it to drop to -1C tonight, and there is a frost warning in effect! eek

The fog/mist started forming around town at about 7:30pm btw, although it might also be smoke from all the wood heaters and outdoor fires, but it's very hard to tell in the moonlight.

Pity there wasn't as much snow on the northwest-facing side of the NSW Snowy Mountains as I had hoped. Also, the lack of good late-autumn/early-winter rainfall, combined with frequent severe frosts, has meant that many of the pastures across the Upper Murray are dry and brown. frown

On a more positive note, even this deep into winter there is some isolated leftover autumn colour around town! grin

A very, VERY wintry morning here in Corryong atm. Dipped down to around 1C last night, so not quite cold enough for the snow-white severe frost/hard freeze I was anticipating.

Still, there is no denying the fact that it is freezing cold outside, around 4C on my thermometer (2C at Khancoban, NSW) with heavy fog! eek

Going for a sunny top of 15C this arvo... hopefully lol. smile

Pardon my prolonged absence, I've been far busier than usual lately! I arrived back home in Melbourne from Corryong last Monday night, so it's time for me to start catching up on my weather reports lol. smile

Here's my report for Sunday June 11th 2017...

My dad and I left Corryong at about for a day trip to visit some of his relatives in Cobram/Barooga further downstream on the Murray River, having moved there from Melbourne a few months beforehand; my mum and sister stayed behind.

Except for the Bandiana Link, the Albury/Wodonga-Barnawartha North leg of the M31 Hume Freeway (Melbourne-Sydney), and for a slight detour around the outskirts of Rutherglen (due to a couple of events in town), it was a fairly good run west along the Murray Valley Highway. The drive lasted about 3 hours; we left Corryong at about 10:30am and reached our destination around 1:30pm, in plenty of time of lunch! No stops along the way but ah well. smile

The return journey took roughly 3.5 hours, departing Cobram/Barooga at roughly 6:15pm and arriving back in Corryong around 9:15pm, with dinner in Albury/Wodonga at about 8pm.

Weatherwise, it was a day with a split personality!

The Upper Murray region was enveloped in a heavy fog blanket that kept temperatures around 5C, even in the town of Corryong itself when my dad and I left! eek

The fog lasted as far as Berringama, but then started breaking up and cleared completely as we climbed up to Shelley and Koetong, leaving us with mostly sunny skies and fast-warming temperatures that spiked above 10C. smile

The fog returned around Bullioh, but at nearby Tallangatta it cleared yet again.

I did notice some mid-level cloud away north beyond Table Top (as a result of last weekend's ECL in NSW/ACT) as drove towards Albury/Wodonga, and it was a bit hazy too. Otherwise it was a beautiful winter's day! smile

By the time we reached Albury/Wodonga (just before noon) it was around 13C. Around 30 minutes later in Rutherglen it was about 16C, and by mid-afternoon in Cobram/Barooga it had warmed to a gloriously mild 18-19C, just warm enough for me to walk around comfortably in a T-shirt! =D

A veil of high cloud swept overhead from the west during the afternoon and cleared off during the evening, but not before creating a beautiful sunset. smile

The drive back at night was also interesting. It stayed around 10C as far as Bundalong (the moon could be seen rising in the east just before we reached Yarrawonga/Mulwala), and then dropped to about 7C to as far as the Border region. Here and there we encountered patchy fog and mist along the Murray Valley Highway.

East of Albury/Wodonga it was mostly clear as far as Tallangatta, with the temperature around 5-6C.

The rest of the way back to Corryong, we encountered increasingly heavy and persistent fog, with temperatures varying between 3-6C, although it briefly dropped to 2C around the Koetong/Shelley area!

According to my mum and sister, the fog did left in Corryong, but there was only a couple of hours worth of sunshine. Otherwise, it was a raw, dank, mostly cloudy day in town! crazy

As a side note, this is one of the few times I've ever done a long-distance road trip through the Murray River Valley; it's very rare for me to venture downstream of Albury/Wodonga! smile

I visited Yarrawonga/Mulwala (and nearby Bundalong) way back in September 2012, but only for a day trip from Melbourne, and only for a family reunion.

Otherwise, I last travelled along the Murray River way back in July 2012 when my family and I drove from Melbourne to Corryong. We dropped into Shepparton for a funeral, then continued north to Tocumwal, and then east along the NSW side of the river to Albury/Wodonga (and then onto Corryong), stopping briefly in Barooga (not Cobram) and for afternoon tea at Corowa (not Wahgunyah). smile

The only other time I did this sort of Murray Valley road trip was way, WAY back in January 2010. My family and I did a round trip from Corryong to Shepparton and back, travelling through Tallangatta, Albury/Wodonga, Wangaratta, and Benalla on the way there. On the return journey, we drove back to Albury/Wodonga and later Corryong via Katamatite, then across the Murray River at Yarrawonga/Mulwala and east along the NSW side through Corowa/Wahgunyah and Howlong (where we had dinner btw).

Last weekend's trip has given we a chance to see yet another tiny but beautiful corner of Victoria, as well as NSW/ACT!! grin

My report for Monday June 12th 2017 (Queen's Birthday). I'm FINALLY able to get back on track with my daily weather reports! smile

My family and I left Corryong, Northeast Victoria around 2:30pm, and arrived back home in Melbourne around 9:45pm.

The whole day in Corryong was cold with heavy fog; it was barely 7C when we departed town. And based on Facebook reports from my friends back in the Upper Murray it's a safe bet to say that the fog hung around virtually all day! eek

But 20 minutes down the Murray Valley Highway, at Wabba Gap near Cudgewa, the fog finally started breaking up. Eventually as we made our way through Berringama it gave way to sunny skies (albeit with high cloud), and the temperature rose to 12C in minutes! grin

As we crossed the hills through Shelley and Koetong the high cloud retreated northeast into NSW/ACT. We briefly descended into fog once more on the approach into Bullioh around 3:10pm, but it cleared after a couple of minutes. And aside from smoke haze, plus some isolated fog patches just above the small locality of Old Tallangatta, and a thicker fog blanket over the Mitta Mitta River Valley south of Lake Hume (looking towards Lake Darthmouth and Mount Bogong), we continued to enjoy mostly sunny skies as far as Yackandandah (around 4pm).

A cold front brushing to the south then imported a layer of mid-level cloud that made it as far north as Southern NSW/ACT, according to the satellite imagery. Our first stop was at Beechworth for afternoon tea at 4:15pm. Just before leaving the historic town about 45 minutes later, we were treated to a stunner of a sunset!! =D

Around 5:20pm we joined the M31 Hume Freeway (Melbourne-Sydney) at Wangaratta; it was pitch-dark by the time we arrived in Benalla for dinner around 6pm.

In terms of the route we took our journey home from Corryong was nothing out of the ordinary, except after leaving Benalla we didn't continue back to Melbourne via the Midland Highway through Swanpool and past Lake Nillahcootie to Maindample near Mansfield, then on through Bonnie Doon, Merton, and Yarck to Yea, and finally south down the Melba Highway to the Yarra Valley and Melbourne. No sir!

We ended up doing something we haven't done in years! After assuming we'd be facing heavy traffic coming back from the snowfields and Lake Eildon, we rejoined the southbound lane of the Hume Freeway. We initially intended to only go as far as Seymour and then head back to Melbourne via Yea. But after comparing travel times on Google Maps, we decided to keep going all the way down the Hume from Seymour to the M80 Western/Metropolitan Ring Road in Thomastown. Don't know whether it was made much difference in the end, but hey it worked! smile

The temperature had been fairly consistent at about 12C from Berringama until after leaving Benalla, but the clouds started breaking up and caused the mercury to drop to around 9-10C the rest of the way home.

A few light showers rolled through between Violet Town and Euroa (around 7:30pmish), and we encountered fog in the Seymour/Tallarook area at about 8pm. I did get to see a brief moonrise at Avenel, but clouds rolled back in and made it dark and overcast as we drove south from Seymour.

Around 8:40pm, we re-entered metropolitan Melbourne at Craigieburn. Roughly 10 minutes later, we left the Craigieburn Bypass/Hume Freeway and joined the Ring Road. The last time I can recall using the Thomastown-Seymour leg of the Hume (heading either north or south) was way back in November 2013, while returning from Corryong! Oh how I've missed doing that journey. smile

In years past, whenever my family and I went to Corryong (or Merimbula and/or Canberra, or on day trips to places such as Echuca/Moama, Benalla, or Yarrawonga/Mulwala), we'd usually travel across Melbourne via the Monash and West Gate Freeways (occasionally we'd use Eastlink and the Eastern Freeway instead), followed by Citylink and the Tullamarine Freeway, before joining the Ring Road and then the Hume Freeway from there. This was usually in reverse when coming home of course lol. smile

This time around, we made a left-turn and travelled south through the Greensborough, Heidelberg, and Bulleen areas (we encountered heavy fog while crossing the Yarra River around 9pm) until we arrived onto the Eastern Freeway & Eastlink around 9:15pmish. Roughly 5 minutes later we were on the Burwood Highway heading back towards Belgrave.

Up until then, I had never made it further along the Hume itself than the Barton Highway Interchange of course (whenever travelling to or from Canberra), but I hope to complete the whole journey soon! It's very rare for me to travel up the Hume beyond Albury/Wodonga btw. wink

Lastly, a few slight amendments to my previous post. I just realised I entered in some incorrect weather information for Sunday June 11th 2017. Whoops, my bad, sorry! poke
