I suspect that Pennant Hills Rd is a necessary evil for you smile

Wow it's been that long. Time flies. That was the month of 5 ECL's IIRC. Speaking of them, we haven't had a proper one yet this year.

Yeah hope you get something GR. My dad lives up your way now and is amazed by how little rain it gets. It's rainshadowed from every direction he reckons.

May be we need to change the name to Dryobolong? wink

Pennant Hills Road is pretty hard to avoid. Lane Cove National Park pretty much separates Sydney's East and West North of the M5. Alternative routes would involve the Pacific Highway (the route I take North) and turn right at Ryde road after Pymble, but that is longer and traffic is probably just as bad.

Similarly, the way West from Hornsby is blocked by parkland unless you take the longer route via Galson, but that's very roundabout.

Pennant Hills Road is I think pretty much unavoidable, otherwise more people would avoid it.

Thanks Steve, yeah no wonder Pennant Hills Road is so busy. I might consider the route west actually, might be very nice and scenic anyway. You catch the ferry over Berowra Waters that way don't you?

I've just never driven in Sydney traffic but I'm sure I would be okay.

The Berowra Ferry is an alternative as well, but that is even more roundabout, the Ferry being about 17km North of Hornsby, so presumably in the opposite direction to where you're going.

Both the Galston and Berowra routes are scenic, but in both cases the road is steep, narrow and winding with lots of hairpin bends. I'd think about driving that way in an unfamiliar car, for example.

I thought the Berowra ferry was the same route, but I don't know the area well. Thanks for the advice Steve, yeah hairpin bends on a road and car that I don't know could be a bit sketchy. At least I know Pennant Hills Rd well I guess. I'd probably prefer the winding road over Sydney traffic though.

yeah suppose that could work....though its the whole area other than the coastal fringe that would be in deficit. No full dams through the vineyards or up through the Hunter further west.

Take it from frustrated storm chaser - at the Pennant Hills turn just keep going on the M2 until Ryde road, turn left on that and connect to Pacific Hwy.

It probably is 10km longer, but at least you move.

I would only use that in peak hour.

Trucks always break on Pennant Hills road in peak hour. 3 times out of last 4 trips.

Warm again. 2007 storm was intense. I woke in early hours of the morning with water slapping against the floor boards. The wind and rain and tides aligned to push a bulging lake macquarie waters eastwards. At daybreak all was calm. And the house was completely surrounded by water the colour of tea. Raw sewerage The works. Was quite something

I suppose it depends on what time you hit Peanuts Hills Rd, hit it during the daylight hours can take hours, hit it well after dark and it can be a totally different story!! I have done the trip from the M2 to F3 in about 10 minutes once and that was at 9.30pm

Yeah that is true, I have been in the car when it's taken about 10 mins.

And ozthunder I'll keep that in mind, but I'm actually going from Hornsby so I guess I could follow Pacific Hwy and then go right at the m2.

I'd just cop Pennant Hills Rd TBH. Pacific Hwy to Pymble, etc, will flow better but will probably still take quite a bit longer IMO.
