Thought I'd stat a thread for the upcoming rain event next week. The main focus of this event will probably be coastal New South Wales, but most places should receive something from this event. All major models are forecasting totals next week in excess on 50-100mm in Northeast New South Wales, but lighter falls are expected for most of Queensland. Possibly the odd coastal thunderstorm about on Sunday/Monday as well perhaps?

Edit Reason: shortened thread by a day due to very little happening today

Flood Watch now issued for NE NSW:

Source: Bureau of Meteorology

Issued at 3:44 pm EST on Thursday 8 June 2017

Note: This Flood Watch provides early advice for possible future flooding along all rivers, creeks and overland flow paths within a nominated valley [See note below].

The Eastern districts of NSW is expected to see rainfall over the Long Weekend as a coastal trough directs moist onshore winds over eastern NSW. As upper atmosphere disturbances move through NSW, low pressure circulations are expected to form in this trough, resulting in periods of heavy rainfall along some stretches of the mid north coast. Widespread showers are expected along different stretches of the coast and eastern ranges.

This weather system has the potential to cause river flooding as well as local flash flooding to develop along the following river valleys from Saturday onwards:

1. Orara River - minor flooding

2. Bellinger and Kalang River - minor to moderate flooding

3. Nambucca Valley - minor to moderate flooding

4. Hastings Valley - minor flooding

Already some nice totals racking up around the place. Evans Head in up to 223mm since 9am yesterday. I'm surprised that the tweed river isn't on a minor flood watch actually.

Trough & heavy falls edging much closer to the SE coast on all of tonight's model runs but as usual it's gonna be one of those ones where we'll end up with a lot of rain or nothing at all. I don't expect much if anything up here but for you guys down there the potential is there. Won't really know until about Monday morning I'd say. Upper low trajectory:

Starting to turn in our favour. All 3 of the main models have 50+ mm on Tuesday as the upper low passes through our area and onshore flow increases.

Can anyone forward an opinion on how Caloundra might go on Tuesday morning? We are trying to decide if we can hold an indigenous ceremony outdoors (1100 students viewing) or move it inside. 5 - 15mm is forecast is this more likely to be upgraded or downgraded??? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Ended up with 52.2mm in the 24hrs to 9am. After it eased off late yesterday, not much more rain fell here. Some occasional brief showers today have brought 12.8mm.
Only another 0.4mm and we'll pass last year's annual total of 1069.2mm (which was a very dry year for here).

There is a minor flood warning for the Wilsons River at Lismore: http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/flood/richmond-wilsons.shtml
The flood watch was extended to more rivers this afternoon, to also include the Brunswick (minor), Richmond-Wilsons (minor to moderate) and Coffs Coast (minor): http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDN36501.html

The highest 24hr to 9am totals were at Evans Head (133.6mm) and Yamba (133.0mm), with generally 50-100mm falls near the coast between around Ballina and Port Macquarie.
The wettest places today have been the stretch between Evans Head, through the Lismore area (110mm at Terania Ck) and into the Upper Tweed Valley. Also a localised area of 50mm+ falls from Dorrigo to Coffs Harbour. Coffs had a decent 50.6mm fall in the hour between 9am and 10am this morning.

The latest Severe Weather Warning:
SEVERE WEATHER WARNING for HEAVY RAINFALL
For people in the Northern Rivers and parts of the
Mid North Coast Forecast Districts.
Issued at 10:52 pm Saturday, 10 June 2017.
HEAVY RAIN CONTINUING ABOUT THE NORTHERN RIVERS AND PARTS OF THE MID NORTH COAST.
SYNOPTIC SITUATION:
A low pressure trough along the New South Wales north coast is causing rain areas and showers in the area, heavy at times.
HEAVY RAIN and THUNDERSTORMS which may lead to FLASH FLOODING are forecast to affect the Northern Rivers and northern parts of the Mid North Coast tonight and on Sunday.
Rainfall totals in excess of 200 mm are expected across broad areas of these districts over the weekend. Some catchments may receive higher. Rainfall observations may be accessed at: www.bom.gov.au/nsw/flood/

I didn't see this new thread til just now.
EC is pretty excited and currently has 72hr totals (between 10am today and 10am Wed) up to 200mm in some places.

I'm still thinking our future rainfall amounts will depend a lot on how the troughing/embedded small lows move. If they move too far south or too far away from the coast, we probably won't get much more... but if they hover very close to us for awhile, coast might get additional amounts well over 150mm over the next few days with some flooding.
And of course the areas to its S and SW will do well.

25-50mm of rainfall so far since 9am for many places near the SE QLD coast and lighter further north and west.... GC hinterlands 50-100mm so far... and 128mm at Upper Springbrook.

Rainfall since 9am yesterday via the EWN:

At least the coast is getting plenty,
heavy showers creating a bit of headache for display car owners for the 2017 Cooly Rocks On in Coolangatta all weekend. Lucky we brought brollies.

Been teeming on an off all day, in the last 45 mins another 20mm, 65 since last night here near the Logan River, Tanah Merah. Rain is coming from the north east, and I'm not far from the bay as the crow flies. I certainly don't want another episode of Logan River flooding as I had from Cyclone Debbie on 31 March. Certainly getting more rain than I suspected we would.

Havent watched or checked for the event, tho seen weather wasnt good for bbq today from mid last week, cancelled it Friday,
Both elect rain gauges are not working properly, one has no data going through, the other only showing 11mm so far, but that is just not right !
As ken mentioned for Gold Coast, and Im approx 8ks to its NW, & estimate from charts over 40mm here, which started only last night with just fine showers, but been quite moderate most of today and at a stab, should be nearing 50 or 60 mm thus now'ish !
Have just put out the plastic rain chamber collector for next few days = Fail-Safe, hehe !!
HavagoodN

Been rather dry here for last couple/few months - very much welcoming the event, tho might be bit sick of it by Weds-Thurs coming, being an 'out-doors'y person, Lol

We received 57.4mm in the 24hrs to 9am this morning. Most of that fell from consistent rain during the early hours of today and into this morning. 10.0mm since 9am. Light to steady rain is falling after a break in the rain this afternoon.

Wettest place in the 24hrs to 9am was Tuckurimba (south of Lismore), with 156mm there.
Minor flood warnings current for the Richmond-Wilsons Rivers and the Brunswick Valley. The flood watch has been extended to include the Tweed River (for minor flooding potential).

The airflow is so moist here that mid-afternoon fog and mist suddenly started forming as I was going through Sunnybank during the breaks in the rainfall - 1st photo.

Also below was the 12z EC's forecast for early Tue - its suggestion was one of the small low level circulations becoming the dominant one and strengthening by then. Haven't checked the 00z run yet:

58mm for the event so far at Bracken Ridge.
My main concern is for Tuesday, if everything eventuates, the direction of approach is not good for our roof. It was an owner built house in the 70's and they only put a 15° pitch on it. In QLD you need at least 20 -25° for run off, although the roof tiles are tied down they will still lift in the wind, as do most houses with tiles, and as it has no sarking the rain just comes in. Tin roofs are a better way to go.

Nice to see and hear the rain although. I found out that I am a Pluviophile (a lover of rain who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days)). Except when the roof leaks. laugh

Will solve the problem soon.

119 mm for the event so far, which is well above what I had been expecting by this stage. 59 mm up to 9 am Sunday and a further 60 mm to 9 am this morning, after being under a medium intensity "train" yesterday evening for a few hours. The runoff around here is quite incredible, with everything quite soaked underfoot and water nowhere to go except the nearest streams. Another 80-100 mm for tomorrow will worry a few people but another 200 mm will certainly cause at least flooding in the usual spots.

This rain has pushed my annual tally above my 2016 rainfall total, which is quite incredible after a very dry first quarter and "drier than average" seasonal outlooks dominating the long term forecasts so far in 2017.

The default forecasts on BSCH use the GFS model which (on average) is significantly less accurate than many other models. Very hard to tell if it'll get this setup right or not though.

For a number of runs, various models were going for the westernmost small offshore low to drift south yesterday taking most of the precip with it, before it comes back up from late today into Tuesday while strengthening and allowing precip to return (some have it eventually intensifying into a reasonable ECL).
The upper trough and associated cold air will help with the precip but any surface low/s will help focus and enhance it in the affected areas.

I still think the main peak in rainfall will be later on Tuesday near coastal border areas and SE QLD coastal fringe (e.g. Gold Coast & hinterlands, Northern Rivers, etc). Some of the more vulnerable lower lying areas in these areas could also get some creek and flash flooding developing on Tuesday (apart from any existing flash flooding in NE NSW).
Gusty strong winds could also develop from Tuesday near the coast and the more exposed areas if a low winds up close enough.
And some hit and miss thunder as well as the usual slight chance of an isolated waterspout coming ashore near the coast.

But these setups are always tricky to forecast because any embedded multiple small lows often interact with each other and influence each other's movement.
If one of the embedded circulation becomes the dominant one and a strong ECL develops close enough to the coast, coastal areas just to its south will get flooding rain and locally damaging winds.
On the other hand, if the system as a whole stays a bit too far out to sea, it'll be a bit of a fizzer.

My current thinking is that this won't be an exceptional system (we'd need a bigger stronger ECL hovering a touch further west with a deep E to NE infeed for that) but there might still be some moderate to heavy rain in the areas mentioned above and gusty coastal winds. This can change of course.

Cheers for your input Ken smile

We haven't had a spit today, yet, actually have clothes on line in the breeze, Lol
But yes, you have inspired a further, more detailed look through a few model forecasts, which show much agreement for Tuesday !

There is definitely a very good chance the low will force pricip onto the coast due to its intensity/depth & position, drifting easterly with-in 100k from Moreton Island mid day Tues, then weakening as moves nrth, going by models.

Most precip is looking for the Border areas and sth there of at this stage, but still be a wet one here by all means, and maybe very wet ?

Watching on with interest

A few rumbles of thunder, and spots of rain here in Toowoomba. Also some stormy showers in the Upper Lockyer Valley, but I don't think that they will come to very much.

Here on the western side of Toowoomba we had a few minutes of small hail very deafening on the roof followed by heavy rain.Looks like some nice cells developing just to the east of the range.

Bucketing down in Gatton right on time for school pickup. Really big cold drops.
Rain sort of followed us home but struggling to get here.
Thanks for the info Ken, interesting couple days coming up.
Decent bit of rumbing going on now to the south, breeze picking up, might get some after all.

Very fortunate that the rain off the coast isn't coming on shore. Very heavy rainfall and would certainly have caused some flash flooding issues if it was onshore.

Yet... smile don't speak to soon lock:) smile your not wrong... sure looked to be bombing out there this arvo and very slow moving. Looks like it's going to be interesting as it developes.

That rain train got us last night , with a couple of imbedded very heavy showers. Enough to over flow gutters and flood the pagola area. Some quite slow moving patches last night.
Not much today , just a few drizzly showers this arvo.

Cheers

Soooooo, when are those us of north of Brisbane allowed to whinge and complain about how terribly wrong all of the forecasts are? (insert sarcastic smiley here)

I must say the light show to the south was very impressive as we circled in the sky waiting for clearance to land into Brisbane airport last night.

Our grand total for this event so far.......... 0.00mm
Let's see what tomorrow brings for us, fingers crossed.

0.2mm from a 2 minute shower around lunchtime today. Forecasts and models would indicate we're too far north and inland here to see any significant rain from this system. Maybe 5mm tomorrow if I'm lucky.

Yesterday's light to steady rain at times continued into the very early hours of today, with 25.2mm falling in the 24hrs to 9am. During this morning, showery rain periods began moving ashore and have persisted into this evening. 33.4mm has fallen since 9am.
Tomorrow should be a drier day here with just the occasional shower moving through instead, due to the system moving more northward.

Wettest place in the 24hrs to 9am was 156mm at Tuckombil (near Alstonville). Minor flood warnings still current for the Richmond-Wilsons Rivers and the Brunswick River valley.

Latest Severe Weather Warning:
SEVERE WEATHER WARNING for HEAVY RAINFALL
For people in the Northern Rivers and parts of the Mid North Coast Forecast Districts.
Issued at 4:28 pm Monday, 12 June 2017.
HEAVY RAIN CONTINUING ABOUT NORTHERN PARTS OF THE COAST.
SYNOPTIC SITUATION:
A low pressure system has developed within a trough off the far southern QLD and northern NSW coasts. This system is generating showers, heavy at times.
HEAVY RAIN and THUNDERSTORMS which may lead to FLASH FLOODING are forecast to affect the Northern Rivers and northern parts of the Mid North Coast for the remainder of today. During Tuesday heavy rainfall is expected to ease over the Mid North Coast as the system shifts northward.
Rainfall totals in excess of 150 mm have fallen in the 48 hours to 9am today over these districts. Up to 200 mm further may fall in parts of the Northern Rivers district over the next two days. Rainfall observations may be accessed at: www.bom.gov.au/nsw/flood/
Locations which may be affected include Lismore, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Woolgoolga, Sawtell and Dorrigo.

That's where the upper low (technically the middle level part of it) is.

The surface circulation is offshore and it's more in the form of an elongated belt of vorticity at the moment - see ASCAT satellite wind analysis at 7:02pm below:

It's bucketing down now, and the heaviest stuff is still offshore. Just came inside from rigging up a makeshift shelter for my smallest seedlings, so they don't get washed out of the veggie patch. Hope it holds up overnight.

The heavy offshore rain that I feared would come onshore has done just that. Plus the odd bit of lightning. I wonder how long the rain will last? So consistent. Many locals will be having flashbacks of the night of 'ex-TC Debbie' by now, just from the rain rate itself, and how it sounds on the ol' tin roof. I hope it doesn't flood.

Stay safe up there guys. I have been in Sydney for the past few weeks for the Vivid festival. The weather in Sydney late last week was fairly ordinary however has eased up now to sunny skies. I have delayed my trip coming back to QLD due to the inclement weather in northern NSW fearing the highway could be cut off.

I have some photos of yesterdays fog that engulfed Sydney yesterday morning, would love to post a pic here if that's ok.

I can't wait to see it gleno!

Winds gusted up to 87km/hr at the Gold Coast Seaway overnight.

I still can't see a huge amount of additional rain that would cause widespread severe flooding. A few of the lower lying areas, causeways and creeks near the coast might still get some pockets of localised flooding (in addition to the existing flooding in NE NSW).
Of course if the low and trough hangs around closer to the coast than expected, rainfall amounts/flooding potential would become higher.

Should we be worried about that huge blob of rain heading straight for the coast - in particular - north of Brissy towards the Sunshine Coast? Shear is quite strong at 500hPa and steering it in that direction.

If it reaches the land and maintains that intensity (which looks even heavier than here), then yes.

335mm at Alstonville now for event , Big wow factor is nearby Rous Mill , still on the plateau's southern fringe , 550mm over wknd! not what they wanted as the area is under macadamia nut trees , and a lot of this years crop just washed down the gullys and creeks.

I think some of the high reflectivities from that mass is due to the bright-banding phenomenon (water-coated ice/snowflakes reflecting back a lot more radar energy than normal raindrops).

The freezing level is only around 9000ft at the moment and a lot of the precip above that would be a mix of supercooled droplets/ water coated ice/snowflakes.

Brightbanding is commonly seen on weather radars in situations like these and make precip reaching the ground look heavier than it really is.

There's still be a fair bit of rain under it though.

Rain gauge sitting at 45.0 mm for the event at Salisbury, so just 4.8mm falling since 6.00 a.m today...watching the radar the heavier falls looked to be South of here this morning and now North of here this arvo.

Brightbanding is commonly seen on weather radars in situations like these and make precip reaching the ground look heavier than it really is.

There's still be a fair bit of rain under it though.

At what altitude does the radar beam penetrate the precipitation?

The rain pretty much cleared here during yesterday evening, with very little falling afterwards. 36.0mm in the 24hrs to 9am.
Today was a mostly sunny day until cloud moved in around 4pm. There have been a few showers pass over since then, but they have been quite fast-moving, so only 2.2mm has fallen.

Minor flood warnings current for the Orara and Richmond-Wilsons Rivers. Terania Creek (near Nimbin / the Nightcap Ranges) was the wettest place in the 24hrs to 9am with 101mm there.

Current radar shows curved band approaching coastline.

Then in looking at the current sat pic, the small low that initially started life off North Stradbroke Is. on Saturday night, moved NNE, and then east, away from the coast has now been picked up by the 20,000ft deep SE stream and is heading quickly toward the Fraser Is area.

Whatever direction the low moved it seems to me that for some reason the cloud and rain just shrunk away to almost nothing very quickly. It certainly saved the Wilson, Richmond and Tweed from a possible serious flood event. I noticed that some parts of the Downs had some reasonable rain.

Yep which was pretty much expected. The winds started taking on a more southerly component as the low wound up and moved NW, confining the precip to the coastal fringe... warm air in the midlevels also started wrapping around over SE QLD stabilising the atmosphere a bit more as well.

As bad as it was for the people/areas affected in recent days, it would've been far far worse if the ECL was bigger, stronger and hugged the coast for a long time (the less likely scenario in this case). Many areas got off lightly.

Having said that, there still was some decent rain and wind in the last few days depending on area.

Wind gusts ranged from 70 to 95km/hr near the coast and islands with some wild-looking surf along some parts of the Gold Coast.
Rainfall totals were modest away from the coast but closer to the coast 50-100mm fell in some places, well over 100mm in the Gold Coast hinterlands, and those even higher totals in the Northern Rivers.

It was good to see the rain again after being dry for so long. Some random wet weather photos I took yesterday in my area and the CBD:

we made the call lastnight to not bother going in to work today, was thinking this morning that it was the wrong call, but now thinking we made the right decision.
The shower of rain that just passed through here added 4.7mm to the gauge, now sitting at 49.7mm event total.

Just compared the surface obs at Cape Morton and Double Island Point and there's a little bit of a pressure differential between the 2 that could not be attributable to the height of the weather station.

That to me suggests a weak surface low.

The relative heights of the weather stations aren't a factor because the pressure obs at all stations are corrected to mean sea level.

Latest ASCAT satellite pass at 11:02am indicates the surface low is just SE of Fraser Island:

hopefull , oddly it wasnt a big area who really copped it. the southern edge of the alstonville plateau around rous mill and dalwood got a huge dump , where 10km , west or even east , and to the north only received half that , and much less crop loss , minimal even. mustve been training in on that exact localised area and the orographic lift just forced it to drop its guts. amazing really.

115mm to date here at Bracken Ridge. Emptied approximately 3 liters from a trap pan I have installed in the ceiling until we can work out exactly where or more importantly, how the water is working its way in. Roofs are a hard thing to work on. Loved the early days when roofs were simple and 25°+ with just a straight hip or gable either end.

Wynnum Nth 24 hour rain 23.6mm. Now 83.6mm for the event which is also the monthly total and now exceeding the 75.6mm local June average.

Also the above average overnight temps associated with the rain has lifted the previously negative average temp anomaly for June up to zero.

We finished up with 221mm here (over 2 times the June average), with today also looking decidedly dull. During the event the minimum temps were 4.6 degrees above average, taking the monthly average minimums to equal warmest on record so far.

Can anyone offer an explanation for the cloud formation on current Himawari sat image to SW of Bris? Is it due to fairly deep convection with shearing by STJ? Cheers

Cant wait for spring already! One of those low pressure bombs in the Tasman generated a wave with enough power to dislocate my shoulder out in the surf last week and I nearly drowned.Just lookin forward to spring sunshine now and the thundery outbreaks that get more and more frequent.
