The site on West Tce 8.30pm 13.3C Kent Town 10C, that is a big
difference, and does not appear to reflect the Temps across the
Metro, is this a bad location , is there an urban heat affect.?

What a strange story. Why did they reopen it after 38 years?

no idea but i found this note:

From Wednesday 14 June 2017, the Adelaide (West Terrace / ngayirdapira) station will replace the Adelaide (Kent Town) station as the official Adelaide capital city weather observation location.

Perhaps if you are feeling cold this morning go to the BOM West Tce
weather station at 6.20am 8.6 Kent Town 5.5, i have temperature of 5.2 in the southern suburbs.

WHY GO BACK TO A SITE FROM 38YRS.AGO THEY LEFT THERE TO FIND A PLACE AWAY FROM URBAN HEAT EFFECT , THATS WHY THEY WENT TO KENT TOWN.

Would be nice to have an AWS in Mt barker, as the current manually read site in Hill St, no way reflects the actual temperature in the town centre, situated at a much lower altitude.
This months minimum temps at a number of private sites around town are up to 5 deg colder.

The reason why they moved back to West terrace is due to the suburban build-up of properties up in KT, also as that property that is on now I don't think they want to continue paying so they will eventually disable that one.

KT isn't open as much compared to West Terrace as it is in the open. IMO they should have both but it'll be the cost of keeping KT up and running they don't want to pay.

If there is a temp difference then why? Is there a graph - temp vrs time? I'm about to hit the sack...

Clearly placing one's thermometer in an appropriate spot is prudent.

Min/Max Averages June 1-20

Kent Town: 5.4-17.0
West Terrace: 6.1-17.0

Not much in it really, maybe a few more months with changing seasons and prevailing weather conditions it will even out some more.

Kent Town will always have colder mins - it is in a cold sink and sheltered from any mixing. West Terrace is a lot more exposed and a better site overall and on the side of of a gentle slope towards the west which won't allow cold air to sit there. Max temps will be very close. Winds will be significantly more accurate with higher averages and gusts compared to Kent Town. Kent Town was a poor site by AWS standards. It will continue to operate for up to 2 more years with more comparisons between West Tce being performed before closing but as of now West Tce is the official 'Adelaide' site.

TS cool

The picture we're getting is that when it is completely calm (as on a few nights in May), West Terrace is slightly colder than Kent Town, but West Terrace is much more likely to get light winds than Kent Town is, and when that happens, West Terrace can be warmer (sometimes much warmer).

Whether we'll see similar behaviour in the warmer months (especially when gully winds come into play) is still an open question.

I don't think that's correct tbh....
KT was surrounded, was never a true indication of real winds in the area. WT out in the open. more exposed location. You will get a more accurate representation of winds in the city area there and will be generally higher than what was recorded at KT.

West Terrace is in a more open field compared to kent town surrounded by buildings and on top of a roof thus giving WT more free air flow around the sensors.

Sorry - didn't make myself clear here - I meant light as opposed to calm. (Also, when you're looking at impacts on minimum temperature, what matters is the wind at screen level, and you'd expect the Kent Town site to be even more sheltered at screen level than it is at 10 metres height).
