Ron - you're having a run of very cold nights up there. I see Armadale in your general area is tracking at -2.3 for minima so far this July, 2 below average.

========

I was a bit intrigued by Sydney's local 'cold pole', Camden, which is tracking at -0.6 average minimum for the first 10 days of July, colder than many tableland sites in spite of being close to sea level (74 metres). It is 3.6 degrees below its July average minimum (1971-2017). It must be the frostiest place in Greater Sydney.

Camden AWS Site

The site is located at Camden Airport, in a wide cleared, flat, grassed area, partially enclosed by a loop in the Nepean River. The AWS is about 120 metres from the runway and about the same distance from a row of buildings, about 500 metres from the river and wooded areas and about a kilometre from built-up areas. The area has not yet been swallowed up by Sydney's contiguous suburbia, it is still seprated (for another few years) by some open country. Apart from the Camden-Narallen 'metropolitan area' mostly to the East, the site is mostly surrounded by rural areas, with the Burragarong plateau rising to about 500 metres about 20km to the West. If you want a cold frost hollow not too far from Sydney, the site is well-chosen.

Nice info there Steve777

Looks like the recent dry spell will come to an end along the coast tomorrow afternoon, with showers forecasted for the next couple of days, up to 15mm is possible for Port Stephens.

2.9c was my overnight low, and today is just like the first 9 days of July!!

Hi WR - how's the cloud today? smile

Pretty nice weekend here really, coolish, sometimes cloudy, a little breezy but sun as well. Everything except rain it seems.

Looking at my dwindling wood supply and wondering if it will last until I can get out again in about 10 days - gunna be close!! Especially as I will have a house full of visitors this coming weekend who shiver at the sight of a cloud or a puff of breeze grin

The wood usage rate will be WAAAAAAY up this coming weekend. smile

A dry week out here I suspect.

Rob - glad you saw some flakeage smile

Ron - showing off again!!!

Eddy - ya still don't know how to take a decent photo do you!!! grin

-5 here this morning - some fog over in town still.

Watery sun here but thicker fog in town near the river it seems.

Good fun at the Winter festival.

They will need to expand it greatly, lines too long for food n drink now. About 12,000 to 14,000 people there Saturday night, despite a shower earlier on.

Great fun, there for about 4 hours.

I suspect you might be able to teach me a thing or three about night & storm shots especially smile

Hearts - I remember when we played that with real cards and called it Ricketty Kate grin

It's sunny here today Dave, with just a bit of high cloud. According to the satellite, there's plenty more streaming in from the NW.

Another well below average night here with 2.8 at Albion Park and 2.0 here. The nights at Albion Park are currently tracking about 3 degrees below average. Long term average is 6.3, while the average so far this month is 3.0. We may just get the coldest July on record for minimums. I think the story would be similar for many other centres.

Canberra is also tracking about 3 below average with an average min of -3.0 so far. Cooma is averaging a whopping -5.1, about 2 below. Bathurst Ag so far is -2.4 across 9 days (one of the day's data are missing) which like other places, is also about 3 below average.

Sure is wintery for minimums!! grin

Port Stephen's and Seal Rocks are in the box seat for showers in this type of setup where the showers run parallel to the coast. Less so the Illawarra, sometimes only the east tips of Jervis Bay receive anything much (except Ulladulla which seems to always pull something out of the bag). The rest of the Illawarra will see 2mm at best.

Hey WR - the day missing from our data was a -5.3 at the airport, hopefully they will come up with a number for that day because it make the average mtd even colder.

Wind picked up here from the SW over the last hour or more - it's a chilly wind!!

Still mostly sunny with some scattered high cloud coming over.

Oh no! I thought it might've been one of the warm nights you had. Hopefully the data is recovered.

We have a SWer here too actually, but it's not that chilly. I'd say it's on the cool side of pleasant. smile

Only 16 though which should feel very chilly, I guess I'm finally getting used to winter.

Almost half way through winter now.

The lengthening days will start to be noticed in another couple of weeks.

The Bureau are busy massaging the number. And will be pulled from some pencil pushers @ss soon. Lookout for the shannanigans they pulled concerning Goulburn Airport reading just over a week ago. The Bom can run but they can't hide from citizen sleuths no more.

Newcastle running well above av for days now. Could stretch to 2 degrees or more before July is done and dusted

Too right Oz, I wouldn't be surprised if the Bay received double the rainfall amount forecasted.

Could be a really nice sunset tonight, unfortunately for me I'll be stuck at work!!

But nights are 0.5 below average so that's a good thing right??

Yeah Eddy you will get heaps of rain from this one. You had a pretty good dry spell, I notice on your sig there has been no rain for the month. What's the driest month you've ever had up there?

I hope its not heaps of rain, place is drying out quite nicely!!

From memory I think I've had a month with no rain, it was either August or September back in the mid 90s, I'll check it out when I get home.

Coastal sites aren't so much below average possibly because of relatively warm oceans. Places like OH which dont 'benefit from' (or 'suffer from') inversions under clear skies are also not so far below average. On the other hand, frost hollows like Camden Airport, Richmond RAAF and Canterbury Racecourse are tracking about 3 degrees below average this month for minima.

For maxima, most places near Sydney are a little above average, the Airport being an outrider tracking 2 degrees above.

========

Today felt chilly in the wind. It started out cold and clear but the sky became progressively more streaky as the afternoon wore on. It looks quite cloudy now, but the BOM are still expecting a mostly clear night.

EDIT: latest GFS now showing a major cold outbreak with moisture tomorrow week, about -3 to -4 over Sydney and the Central tablelands. Won't dwell on it for now, it's still early days and could well go away.

That's what I'm expecting. I've lost count of the number of times there has been a very cold outbreak at the end of 8 day GFS only to phased out. But, IMO, this is a good sign that it's only a matter of time before we get a decent cold outbreak otherwise the models would not keep hinting at cold spells. As I have said many times, I'm waiting til August.

Edit: Beautiful sunset right now, I only just noticed. Better get out there!

And it's fading.. I reckon it would've been way nicer a bit earlier.
