G'day gang! Bula vinaka! smile

Been a while since I started a thread... but if ACCESS and GFS are anything to go by, then Winter 2017 looks set to now FINALLY be getting ready to unleash its full power, so here we go! grin

Following the current frontal system brushing through, a large high will arrive from the Bight and hang over us for a couple of days, bringing more settled conditions, but with a few nippy nights! eek

Further west and southwest, two weather systems look set to collide! A trough is currently over Southwest WA. Immediately to the southwest, a potentially major winter storm from Antarctica is now on the move across the Southern Ocean. A deepening low is charging northbound en route to Southern Australia; a mighty cold front is swinging north ahead of it! The trough will weaken and/or head northeast into the Outback, but some of its remnants will be pulled south into the brewing storm system.

The high should retreat off Eastern Australia into the South Pacific by Thursday, allowing winds to swing around into a rapidly strengthening northerly airflow across Victoria ahead of the impending storm, with the front bursting upon us by Friday, introducing an icy polar blast! A second powerful storm looks scheduled to strike by next Sunday/Monday! smile

For tomorrow...

Morning fog and frost across the north. Isolated showers near the coast, contracting to Gippsland during the evening; isolated afternoon showers possible about the Great Dividing Range, with alpine snow above 1300m. Cool with light to moderate northwesterly winds, becoming light and variable. Forecast tops of 15°C for Melbourne and 18°C for Mildura.

For Wednesday...

Widespread morning fog and frost, mainly over the Central and Eastern districts. Isolated morning coastal showers over East Gippsland. Otherwise a fine, cool and partly cloudy day with winds tending light to moderate northerly. Forecast tops of 15°C for Melbourne and 17°C for Mildura.

For Thursday...

Morning frost in the east. Cloud increasing with showers and possible late thunderstorms developing over the Western districts during the day, increasing over the Southwest at night. Cool to mild with moderate to fresh northerly winds. Forecast tops of 15°C for Melbourne and 18°C for Mildura.

For Friday...

Scattered showers across much of the State, more isolated in East Gippsland and in the Mallee. Possible thunderstorms with hail near the coast. Snowfalls lowering to 800m!!! Cool with moderate to fresh west/northwesterly winds. Forecast tops of 14°C for Melbourne and 18°C for Mildura.

Have a good one gang! wink

Cheers, vinaka.

Think I can see 532 thickness on
Every front as they pass through
So possibly snow to that 6-800m mark?

Cheers Doogasnow! wink

Overnight low of 7.2°C, reached a top of 17.4°C here in Belgrave today. Mostly cloudy for starters, with showers off to the south and southeast, then it became sunnier as the afternoon progressed. smile

A cold, clear night with a bright moon coming up now, currently around 5°C! eek

Shaping up to be a fantastic winter storm event across Victoria over coming days guys, well overdue; the models are lining up for what'll hopefully be a real showdown! smile

First storm still on track to strike by late-Thursday/Friday. A cool, crisp, sunny day tomorrow, aside from a real frosty start, but I'd expect Severe Weather Warnings for 90-100km/h+ gales for Thursday to be issued across Victoria within 24 hours as the northerly airflow starts strengthening in response to a very tight pressure gradient! eek

The cold pool is forced deep into Southeastern Australia over the weekend, so I'd expect some very ICY weather ahead! Then winds veer from west/southwesterly back to northwest/ northerly and increase yet again on Sunday as the second storm system bursts upon Victoria!!

The incoming high behind it next week should bring a temporary reprieve, but emphasis on "temporary" lol, a head's-up guys! ACCESS and GFS have what could be an even larger, more POWERFUL winter storm threatening to strike Victoria mid/late next week! grin

Overnight low of 3.8°C, currently around 4°C with patchy fog and frost, plus some high cloud.

I forgot to mention that the showers that rolled through my area yesterday, in the wake of Monday evening's frontal system, dropped another 1.1mm of rain. Nice! smile

Hope so powerful winter hit SE Australia will be nice and no frost go away.

I had Theory if this High Pressure keep bring dry and frost and pushing frontal away by Spring time then warm air will be early in September to October when Sun get closer..

Anyway just want frontal and rain otherwise farmers will have problems growing season.

Reached a high of 17.5°C here in Belgrave today, nice and sunny with patchy high cloud. Another cold night coming up, currently around 7°C. poke

Nice to have a potentially major winter storm re-entering the Bight en route to Southeastern Australia on satellite again! grin

Overnight low of 6.1°C, it was around 10°C when I left home in Belgrave for work around 30 minutes ago.

Currently in Upper Ferntree Gully, it's blustery with high cloud, tinged pink and yellow at sunrise. Despite the chill, I'd much rather windy weather instead of frost! smile

Reached a high of 15.4°C here in Belgrave today. A lovely sunrise over Melbourne's eastern suburbs on my way to work this morning, then a blustery and mostly cloudy day with a mix of sunny breaks and light showers. smile

And it's been increasingly windy this evening, it's been ages since I've heard the wind roaring away, especially from the north! smile

Loving it, but glad I'm not out in it atm lol, the wind sure had an icy chill whenever I was outside today! And after I had finished my shift in Box Hill this evening I was worried that this evening's train chaos across Melbourne might've been due to the stormy weather! eek

Also been showery this evening too, but no measurable rainfall yet. Hopefully the incoming cold front will drop some good overnight falls, followed by heavy showers and maybe storms with hail tomorrow and into Saturday! smile

The temperature has bottomed out at 10.1°C so far this evening, so it's very likely to be my warmest night for Winter 2017, and my first night in the double-digits since May 27th, when we dipped to 10.9°C. At the last check it was getting warmer, around 12°C! crazy

My hope also dooga' re mid next week - unfortunately this AM's ACCESS shot that to pieces, as it all slips off South with yet another big high approaching to the West of W.A. behind it.

A sunny warmer morning here, calm, no fresh snow on Mt Wellington. grin

Overnight low of 8.5°C, at least at the time I left for work at 7:30am this morning, can't confirm if it got colder than that. It reached a high of only 14.5°C here in Belgrave today! eek

A cold, wet, miserable and rather stormy day. No sooner had my alarm gone off at 6:30am to wake me up than the cold front struck and it started raining very heavily, accompanied by strong wind!

The rain eased after I left home to catch the bus, but it didn't clear off until about the time I reached Box Hill, around 8:30am.

The weather then stayed windy and partly cloudy but dry, until locally heavy showers resumed during the afternoon. Good thing the weather cleared yet again in time for my train trip home after 7:30pm! smile

Collected 4.2mm of rain over the last 24 hours, with 2.1mm by the time I left home this morning, and another 2.1mm to follow afterwards. smile

Currently around 8°C.

Ah well - part of the career! - now yo can focus on identifying some useful rain for the Mallee to break this drought smile

I tipped out 3mm last evening from the odd dribble or two yesterday.

This weather is akin to winters 45 years ago.

I guess a few of us will agree that when this dry breaks in coming months, we'll all end up swimming.

A long time farmer resident at Boisdale said to me a while back, "We seem to be in a state of drought broken by the odd flood" in a humourous way.

Good frost last night and bright calm sunny morning !

Some S.A.M. info, the big lows seem to be getting further northward onto mainland Aus, as an observation, might be wishful thinking.

Got the fingers crossed dooga' but here not much rain around, should be good snow anywhere the moisture is with cold air like that.

Your locale (to our W) has been doing much better with rain lately.

Better get the skies out grin

Samboz - yeah unfortunately the pattern
At this stage dosent favoure u guys out
East and from what your saying things are getting
Desperate out your way for rain!! Fingers crossed
U can get at least something over the next week
Or so 😀 Or have the models change in a
More favourable way for your area!👍

In regards to my local area, yes we have faired
Better than out east but even we are a long way
Down on rainfall for this time of year!! Most of the
Dams around here are only half full and at this
Time of year are normally overflowing.
Ground is hard and is usually soaking wet and sponge.

Not sure about cracking the skis out haha
I hope so though😀
But if the charts hold firm then we should
See some flurries ❄️❄️

Overnight low of 4.1°C, reached a top of only 13.3°C here in Belgrave today. A horribly cold day out there; it started mostly sunny but became increasingly cloudy as the day progressed. The Sun has managed to break through the cloudcover atm. The wind has a sharp chill to it, and it was kinda blustery this morning. poke

Currently around 9°C.

Looking forward to midnight tonight, as it means we're halfway through Winter 2017!! grin

We'll get bgr all this week, next week looking worse... grin

WZ's GFS (Ag map) looks OK, be a miracle if it's right.

Another frost here, lovely calm sunny day followed (would have been great down on the Gippsland Lakes).

Despite the sunshine, a 13C max saw hands-in-pockets after 3:30pm here.

Many of us oldies are saying these frosts remind us of 40+ years ago when we were kids. ....which is pretty much in line with the sunspots (google them).

Hail is likely for East and Melbourne as cells is fast moving..

I saw wall clouds and lucky Bendigo city lights shows the clouds and was worried told my wife put Car in Garage as cant prove what size hail might be...as only small hail that's good...

8mm out hail storm to bring 40mm for July and only need another
17.8mm for average month.

Cause they only warn for SEVERE Thunderstorms which is.
Large hail that is greater than 2cms
Damaging winds 90/km or greater
Heavy rainfall leading to major Flash Flooding

General thunderstorms do not get a warning

The cold and dry continues shaping up as one of the worst winter for N Vic and inlad SA and NSW one of driest ever and next 10 days or so show nothing.

Reached a high of 15.1°C here in Belgrave yesterday. Blustery and mostly cloudy with a few occasional showers, but also with sunny breaks especially in the afternoon. smile

Despite the wind chill it felt a little mild, almost spring-like! Well, we are technically past halfway through winter! grin

I noticed a fair bit of convection about the place while at work, and it got quite dark and stormy looking at times! We had a few gusty showers roll through during my evening tennis lesson around 7:15pm, then an hour later we had the remnants of the line of thunderstorms move through. No thunder or lightning and very little rain unfortunately; it sure looked promising on radar beforehand. frown

Currently around 10°C and blustery.

Definitely getting to the skinny end of the need for rain T1, could be one of the those wet Dec thru' Jan seasons.

Re warnings, constantly amazed at Sheep Grazier warnings from the BOM, 99% of which are inapplicable to weather on the day or the effect it could have on sheep, even those off shears & lambs.

Very dry near Maffra, haven't added it up lately but < 50% rainfall.

Just recorded 0.5mm to my stats for here, first recorded fall in 13 days. Been other shows less that 0.25mm scattered through that time.

Overnight low of 9.2°C, reached a top of 14.4°C here in Belgrave today.

A blustery, mostly cloudy, unsettled and rather stormy day across Melbourne, just a pity I was stuck at work in Box Hill.

I noticed it got very dark and threatening around mid-afternoon, I heard a loud booming noise around this time which might've been thunder but I cannot confirm lol! smile

Quite heavy rain for a time as the storm brushed past, then after about 30 minutes it was gone, with sunnier weather to follow; the same storm dropped 2.1mm of rain here at home btw.

Collected another 1.1mm of rain since then, so 3.2mm in total. The main cold front itself is marching northeast towards Melbourne, so hopefully a rainy night ahead! Currently around 8°C. smile

I echo Twisters' sentiments regarding the 'min-tornado'. A false and misleading term so often used to describe damage that one conceives to be too strong to be normal 'wind' but not strong enough to be caused by the stereotype wizard of oz style USA tornado.

Cold air tornadoes or quasi linear tornadic events are very, very hard to see and almost always embedded within rain at the time. Usually a big whoosh or jet sound, stuff flying round and she's gone. Still a tornado all the same!

Another one likely near Bethany in the Adelaide Hills today as well.

TS cool

Yes i agree what Twister said "If this pattern continues Nlys come Sept-Nov gonna be warm to hot ad dry for sure".

As i had said that in last few weeks ago...

When Sun move closer and pattern stay like this then warm air will hit SE Australia when outback surface cooks up.

1.5mm here Petros since yesterday morning, saw up to 11C but mainly cooler.

Bright sunshine between dark blustery showers coming thru' from W.

Were f'cast for frost here, but 2C new AM temp tomorrow.

Alpine area still in cloud, some snow no doubt but with about 6mm of rain on Wellington in last two days won't be heaps.

Need plenty for irrigators later in year.

Lovely sunny spring Today of 14c at 11am....

Wish the stubborn High Pressure move more North to let more frontal or Westerly wind over inland SE Australia.

MtWell. - seen this morn and a little more snow than few days back, expected more actually.

No frost this morning, cool and sunny though.

WAS -2.2c this morning..

Everyone will think this Winter is coldest as its not..

We only having coolest winter of few SW westerly winds and less frontal not bring any polar cold winds for cold day time temperature.

High-pressure areas are often associated with settled, dry and bright conditions in winter, clear skies bring cold nights to frost.

My post for the past four days from here in Belgrave (I've been so busy lately)...

Wednesday July 19th 2017

Rain: 7.4mm Min: 7.9°C Max: 12.1°C

Thursday July 20th 2017

Rain: 10.5mm Min: 6.5°C Max: 10.2°C

Friday July 21st 2017

Rain: 6.3mm Min: 2.2°C Max: 15.7°C

Saturday July 22nd 2017

Rain: 0mm Min: 6.3°C Max: 13.1°C

A bit of a mixture of weather over the past days, including today. Quite heavy showers from Tuesday July 18th through to late on Thursday July 20th, thanks to persistent onshore flow during this period, aided and further enhanced by the passage of a cold front on Wednesday July 19th. A few light showers then followed in the wee hours of July 21st. So all up, 24.2mm of rain for that period, which pushes my rainfall total for 62.1mm!! grin

Thursday July 20th was my coldest day for the year so far btw (thank goodness I was indoors at work), and it gave way to a very nippy night on

My post above had too much information removed by accident when I was editing it! poke

Here's the correct version...

My post for the past four days from here in Belgrave (I've been so busy lately)...

Wednesday July 19th 2017

Rain: 7.4mm Min: 7.9°C Max: 12.1°C

Thursday July 20th 2017

Rain: 10.5mm Min: 6.5°C Max: 10.2°C

Friday July 21st 2017

Rain: 6.3mm Min: 2.2°C Max: 15.7°C

Saturday July 22nd 2017

Rain: 0mm Min: 6.3°C Max: 13.1°C

A bit of a mixture of weather over the past days, including today. Quite heavy showers from Tuesday July 18th through to late on Thursday July 20th, thanks to persistent onshore flow during this period, aided and further enhanced by the passage of a cold front on Wednesday July 19th. A few light showers then followed in the wee hours of July 21st. So all up, 24.2mm of rain for that period, which pushes my rainfall total for 62.1mm!! grin

Thursday July 20th was my coldest day for the year so far btw (thank goodness I was indoors at work), and it gave way to a very nippy night on Friday July 21st, with frost on my car windows! eek

It was very foggy for much of the commute to work on Friday btw, but a calm, cool, crisp and mostly sunny afternoon followed! Only a bit of high cloud moved through late in the day. smile

As for today, it was mostly sunny initially. But cloud increased during the day as a trough moved through, with light showers around mid-afternoon (mostly virga). The skies cleared towards sunset.

Otherwise, the major feature today was the wind. Northerly winds have been strengthening all day long. It's a relatively mild evening out there atm around 10°C, but the wind chill has been most unpleasant today! eek

Next cold front closing in on radar and satellite! Love the sight of tomorrow's forecast for Melbourne! Hope it comes off! grin

Min: 8°C Max: 16°C

Partly cloudy. Medium (60%) chance of showers. The chance of a thunderstorm in the late afternoon and evening. Winds northerly 25 to 35 km/h turning west to northwesterly 15 to 25 km/h in the late morning and afternoon.

Overnight low of 9.8°C, reached a top of only 14.0°C here in Belgrave today. Unsettled, wet and stormy. smile

I was down in Dandenong this morning, between 10am and 1pm. It was dry for most of the time, but overcast; showers started arriving as I travelled home through Rowville, with the rain kinda heavy at times for about 5 minutes!

The weather really deteriorated as the cold front moved into Melbourne after 2pm when I headed down to Narre Warren North for afternoon tea. Some much heavier showers moved through during the drive down, then the rain eased but the sky became incredibly dark and threatening as if a thunderstorm was about to strike! Within minutes of me dashing inside the heavens opened up and the rain really came crashing down, accompanied by strong winds!

The heaviest rains eased after around 20-30 minutes, although a few showers kept coming through until about 3:30-4pm on the cold front's backside as I returned home via Berwick, Harkaway and Narre Warren East. I noticed some very juicy convection bubbling away to the south and southwest btw as the skies started clearing! smile

Only 2.1mm collected from this front, less than what I was expecting given how heavy the rain was. Currently around 10°C with mostly clear skies overhead.

Wow - an inch of rain ASF!
We got 1mm with the change (that dropped a pleasant 18.5C back to 13C) late arvo.

Wind here was all prefontal, its been calm since the first drops of "rain" arrived.

Its a significant drought in N Gippsland, thank God its happening mid winter!

Plenty of SM fronts to graze Vic over the next week or so - hopefully a break from the frosts.

We got 0.5mm from a snotty change early this morning, followed by a sunny period (17.9C) before lapsing to an overcast near-drizzly late arvo.

Surely a single weather event of interest to us Vic's will soon emerge out of the frosty high pressure repeat sequences we are currently getting hit with.

Overnight low of 7.7°C, reached a top of 14.5°C here in Belgrave today. A partly cloudy day with sunny breaks but also a few possible showers about. Also breezy too. smile

The wind felt a tad chilly this evening while I was having tennis, but overall it's been quite mild! Currently around 11°C.

155.4mm for the year, nearly 7/12ths thru' it, certainly dry here and the Springlike wind is giving indications of arriving.

Nothing on ACCESS for this corner in the next week to get excited about.

Glad to see large areas of Vic getting some good forecasts grin

Lovey sunny of 15c feels like end of August.

Warmth for NSW is a sign that SE Australia will cook up heat in Spring time so only another month left of winter.

Haven't mowed grass round the house for maybe 6 weeks, will settle for the flood any old time it's ready !!!

Reports of decent storm down in Frankston, been NW'ly windy all day here, fine and 20.6 max here - first 20C for "this side" of winter (but expecting up to 22c in similar conditions this coming saturday??

Cloud tops visible in the far western sky here now. Baro steady on 1009 hPa. Would be nice to hear even a distant, thunder rumble in coming hours!

A windy night/mild morning ended up with a snotty windy rainy cold midday/early arvo here today. 3.25mm in my gauge- best one day rain since June 5th!

I guess the benefit will be dryed off in the NW'lies looming for next Saturday???

Dont use those they are terrible lol.

The winter Wlys have arrived though only for a short time before we get cutoffs from next week

Windy few days, Warm Saturday but not to much rain away from the Mounts and coastal locations.

Interesting things happening from mid next week some good heavy rain for NSW and maybe parts of Vic but wait till Sunday to Confirm

Enjoy the Cold Wind and some warmth Satutday

Had 17mm overnight to almost average July of 56mm out of 56.4mm so next front on Sunday should bring most Victoria average to over average July.

Nice with sunny breaks of 13c

Local dairy farmers irrigating already, with days like today @ 23C'ish snow is melting and going to Glenmaggie for them to draw on.

It could be the sort of year where every bit counts the way it's been so far !
