You are a true analyser of facts grin

Great work and info smile

Looks and feels like a good frosty night coming up again out here. Currently about 10 but dropping quickly now.

Heading for -4 or -5, crystal clear sky will leak heat rapidly.

Of course Ron in Walcha will probably show off again with his crazy frosty temps grin They get some solid frosts up there!!!

August 2005 and September 2003 is where no rain was recorded at all!!

In August 2005 the dry spell went form July 22nd to September 3rd!!

Wow, you could never even comprehend that kind of dry spell happening these days, up there. It's no wonder the millenium drought was one of the worst droughts in history. I remember as a kid having water restrictions here because we could never have water fights. Then of course the 2007-08 La Nina broke the drought and we have had nothing even close to that since. Plenty of water fights since cool
The longest dry spell (no recordable rain) here is 60 days from July 12th 1991 to September 9th 1991. The five longest dry spells (since 1939) being:
60 days - (Jul 12th 1991 - Sep 9th 1991)
57 days - (Jun 21st 2002 - Aug 16th 2002)
54 days - (Aug 4th 1939 - Sep 26th 1939)
50 days - (Jun 6th 1947 - Jul 25th 1947)
46 days - (Jun 30th 1946 - Aug 14th 1946)

Looking at BOM's synoptic map archive for the 2002 dry spell (archives only go back to 1999), the subtropical ridge was very persistent, e.g.:

That '02 chart is interesting - looks like a classic winter westerly flow to me. In fact over the preceding week there was a strong westerly flow that dropped over 40mm in this area. However from July 10th '02 onwards blocking highs sat over eastern NSW.

At least here we're seeing some sunshine and frost this winter. Last year was terrible - seemed to be overcast all the time.

Meteye goes for snow here Saturday morning. Moisture may be the missing ingredient. Possibly more snow around Tuesday next week. We'll see what pans out.

Showers just off the coast now, including a yellow cell maybe 10km off Sydney Heads. Some of that will probably come ashore overnight, although it won't penetrate very far inland.

It feels cold tonight - about 11-12 near the coast, highsingle figures inland, the latter a bit warmer than the last couple of nights. Last time I looked out the window it was still fairly clear

60 days is a fairly significant dry spell for along the east coast!!

It only just started raining here in the last 10 minutes, was a few spits late this arvo but not enough to wet the ground.

Definitely an impressive effort by Mother Nature. Other gauges nearby had their dry spells during 1991 "ruined" by only a singular 0.2 to 0.6mm fall:
- Coffs Harbour had 0.2mm from July 11th to September 10th (the 0.2mm falling on August 29th)
- Kempsey had 0.2mm from July 16th to September 8th (the 0.2mm falling on August 24th)
- Crescent Head had 0.4mm from July 15th to September 7th (the 0.4mm falling on August 24th)
- Port Macquarie had 0.6mm from July 12th to September 8th (the 0.6mm falling on July 23rd).

15mm in the last hour!!

I've been looking further into my rainfall figures and found that in 20 years of keeping rainfall figures, there have only been 5 months of 10mm or less including the two months with no recordings at all.

About 11mm at Norah Head overnight too.

Full sunshine and a big frost out here.

Min -4.7 at airport, town reading to come in yet.

Car was reading -2 across the river flats about 11pm last night, at that stage the airport was still about +2

Plenty of ice on my brothers car when I got home, car said -1 there, then.

I reckon the river flats were a fair bit colder than -4.7 overnight (huge frost visible) but the Ag Station (official temps) is also well above the level of much of the town. Would love to see regular readings from the lower areas of town.

Interesting info re dry spells Eddy and Seabreeze.

That's a lot of rain Eddy, we have had none here as I expected.

Yeah Dave the lower parts of town would get extremely cold. Speaking of extreme cold, there were some particularly impressive minimums around the Snowies with -8.9 at Cooma Ap, -10.4 at Thredbo Top (how does it get that cold?) and -11.6 at Perisher.

Does anyone know what it was about last night that made the highest parts coldest?

The cloud moved in shortly after sunrise. It's now cold, about 7/8 cloud and trying to rain. Webcams show rain in the CBD. It is still only 9.9 at OH. The radar shows showers in the immediate coastal fringe and there has been a bit of rain overnight in the Sydney area, confined to within about 8-10km of the coast.

Meanwhile it's almost perfectly sunny with beautiful blue skies here!! grin

SW wind is a bit chilly though I might add.

Min of 3.5 here while the official station was 6.8.

Still showery here, but at least there are plenty of breaks in the sky. Overnight low was 10c, currently 14c so temp is struggling to reach the forecasted high of 16c.

Mother nature currently has diarrhoea over the CBD.

Pretty much as miserable as weather ever gets here now.

We are still under the sun down here. It's a world apart from up there.

Only a bit of low cloud around, the main cloud cover is high cloud above.

It's day like this that I feel blessed to live down here.
