Just stepped outside - what was basically no breeze is becoming one from southerly quadrants. A bit cool and the scattered "windy" cloud appearing on the western horizon suggest more breeze on the way.

Interestingly, we are about 6 degrees and Orange about 9. Cowra about 7, similar to us.

It would seem that warmer air is aloft.

This setup is looking very much like the Feb heat on the 10th-11th Feb earlier this year but just a winter version of it.

Its going to desiccate what remaining grass is left, which despite the lack of rain has held up better than I expected, so far.

Unless we get significant rain, we could move to bushfire territory by mid-late September.

Our grass here is very dry too. I actually think there could be a decent bushfire threat this weekend with so much warmth and dry but the main problem would be wind. The wind is looking strong to gale-force and could get close to 100km/h I reckon. Latest runs are still suggesting 28C in Sydney for both days, with Saturday night possibly also being hottest on record for July as we have never seen such a hot and windy combination in July, quite incredible. At this rate the max will not be lower than 27C so record of 25.9 at Obs Hill will be broken whether it's by 1, 2 or 3 degrees, that's hard to say.

Starting to remind me of 24th September 2006 (which surprisingly I do remember clearly despite being 7 years old) where temp was 34C with 110km/h winds or something similar.

Scary. Might not happen but certainly be unprecendented for Sydney since records began.

The mitigating factor on Sunday at least will be some cloud cover.

Today is running behind this time yesterday at Obs hill. OCF going for a 20.6C max (which could be more on the mark unless something drastic happens), 22.4C for Sat and 25.7C for Sunday.

A lot of things need to align to get a 27-28C day, just have to see how the models evolve through the week. If it does happen then we'll be looking at some beasty ECL/flood potential next month (or the one after)

Yeah Rob, Sunday is a bit touch and go with the timing of the change as well anyway but I don't think there's anything to get in the way of those temps on Saturday. Although Sydney does seem to take a while to warm up in westerlies compared to here. Today is looking like it may not reach the forecasted 22C in Sydney.

There is the chance of a half decent shower here early tomorrow morning. Then even more on Monday. In the old days the upcoming NW airstream would have been accompanied by a decent cloud band.

Some interesting inversions about the place tonight. Albion Park sits on 5c in nearly calm conditions.Campbelltown and Camden sit on 3-4c.Meanwhile the Southern highlands sit on 11c and Goulburn 12c.Of biggest note though is the 17c at Bega. It has been a very impressive month of below zero minimums for Bega so tonights warmth is a brief reprieve from the chilly nights of late. Albion Park will see a sharp rise when the northwesterlies mix to the surface and temperatures may jump from 5c to 16c very quickly. Wind is just starting up here in Nowra following an evening on fairly light winds..

Been a while since we've heard from you pingy!!

Yeah it's rather cold and still here tonight for first time in a few nights. I think the temp will rise tonight as the cloud cover moves over here in the next few hours- if it reaches here.

Have you been surfing lately with the big swells around?

Will be interesting to see if many stations break the July record on Sunday, with most records set in 1990. (which in Sydney broke a previous record of 25.7C).
The actual month itself is nothing special as far as temps go, only just above average at the moment with 18.4C average max, and some way short of July 2013 at the old station at Maitland Visitor's Centre. (which closed in July last year).
The only noteworthy thing for this month is the only 0.6mm of rain so far -which is only a trace, but with showers forecast for the last day of the month (up to 10mm), that stat may become insignificant as well.

Derek, if showers occur on the last day, as long as they're after 9am, they will count towards the next day's total.

And yes howling wind here too, but this kind of wind is not uncommon here in winter. However in Sydney it's pretty rare.
