Next set of weather events to move through over the next few days with the weekend looking interesting.

With my Bsc starting, I can really get into the weather with more detailed reports to improve my skills.

Starting with tomorrow, we will see some showers affecting the southern areas from the morning before gradually extending north to be around the city areas as of late morning, showers would be patchy as the front passes over us. Northerly winds will slowly shift North-Westerly from the mid morning and remaining at that direction. Can't see too much rain, 1-5mm for Adelaide, 4 to 10mm across the Southern areas and possibly up to 15mm

Saturday you'd think it's spring giving a vigorous cold front to move through with a trough ahead to filter gusty North to North-Westerly winds. A LLJ of 60kts is expected to move through around 10am so winds will be fairly gusty there. The trough will also drag in above to well above temperatures across majority of the state including Adelaide which is expected to make a top of 21, 22 won't be ruled out especially for the northern suburbs including Elizabeth. Some places including Renmark expected to see record temperatures for July, 28 the top for there with the previous record of 26.0 in the 25th 2007.
Winds will turn a westerly with the arrival of the front around 4pm Saturday afternoon bringing a band of rain, possibly heavily in parts with showers to follow alongside cooler conditions. I expect around 2-8mm to fall in the city by 11:50pm Saturday in many gauges.
Sunday a cold pool will drift by also bringing showers and possible hail and thunder to the southern agricultural areas from the morning, most likely across the South Eastern parts of the state. I expect around 4-8mm by 11:50pm

Heavier falls will be observed in the Adelaide hills with gaugings ranging from 25 to 40mm with patches of 50 to 60 possible.

The General Adelaide Area (Elizabeth to Noarlunga) should see 10-20mm by 9am Monday, isolated falls of 20 to 30mm not out of the question if you get hit by decent heavy showers or a train of them.

I can't see too much of a thundery signature on this trough at this stage although it would be nice to get a decent band of storms move in, but make the most of the warmth even though it'll be very windy

Impresive divergence aloft with big uplift from that jet atm, half spring like in nature so no surprise to see the amount of lightning along the front/troughline atm. Mobile pattern, nice and fast = lots of air movement and easier for those storms to develop in a semi elevated fashion.

TS cool

It did hit the CBD specifically the crane working on the North Terrace building across from Adelaide Uni. Fortunately I was looking out of the window on the 14th floor at the time it struck, very impressive.

That clap of thunder which I heard earlier wasn't a sharp whip crack, but a very loud rumble as if something really heavy landed on the ground. It shook the windows in the building. Everyone here agreed that the thunder clap was very loud!

I heard a much, much fainter rumble in the distance about 5 minutes later.

If the loud clap of thunder came from that bolt that struck in the CBD, then a fair chunk of inner Adelaide would probably have heard it as my work is about 8.5km from that crane as the crow flies.

I saw the bolt and can confirm if CG=a ground strike then 100% true, over Marion shopping Centre around 11:45am as I was walking from my car to an appointment in the area and saw it directly in front of me.

Yes JE it seems as though a dogger was hit on the Franklin St site, holding one of the chains. The article mentions that at least another crane was hit, which was the one I was looking at. I was on Grenfell Street looking North towards the crane on North Terrace near Frome Rd.
They have lightning rods on them, so the dogger that was hit must have felt some residual current.

Saturday looks quite windy out ahead of the front. I see 60knots progged around 1000m which should mean some pretty decent gusts especially about the peaks, 90-100km gusts seem probable. Been a very calm winter overall so far so looking forward to seeing some good gusts.

The bolt over Marion was a ripper, love it when there that close and the thunder is instant, easier to explain to my daughter smile. We just don't want people harmed anyway.

Yeah that crane is about 150 metres away from me, as the crow would have it. The rumbling and rocking lasted a good 10 seconds, the initial sound sounded almost like when someone claps in a small tunnel, sort of a weird metallic echo sound.

If those winds from 925mb mix down tomorrow there will be a line of devastation across much of the state!! The Western slopes of the ranges will get the worst but the greater Adelaide area is right in the firing line.

What did they get right Eevo? A fine day today??

For people in the Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands and parts of the Lower Eyre Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Upper South East and North East Pastoral districts.

Issued at 10:53 pm Friday, 28 July 2017.

Winds may locally average up to 70 km/h with gusts to around 120 km/h about the elevated terrain of the Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges.
Winds will ease from the southwest behind the front and are expected to decrease below damaging thresholds later on Saturday.

Locations which may initially be affected include Port Lincoln, Stenhouse Bay and parts of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Other locations likely to be affected during Saturday include Adelaide, Whyalla, Maitland, Clare, Hawker, Renmark and Murray Bridge.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

Northwesterly winds gusting to 58km/h here, averaging around 30km/h, though the anemometer is on the leeward side of our tall gum trees. I suspect it's blowing a little bit harder than that.

Looks like the highest recorded gusts today were in the range of mid 90km's, however by the sounds of the SE Mount Lofties and the Murraylands, there may have been the odd 100km or higher gust around. Really dried things out with the near 0 degree into negative dewpoints with this wind. I could see some raised dust out towards no-mans land today.

Lets hope this potential upcoming low can deliver, models all over the shop for the next week, complex pattern.

1.5mm in Clare from the northern most cell of the showers last night. Still yet to exceed a 10mm day since mid April. This next system shows promise.

I ended up with 94.9mm for July which surprised me a little. All those small amounts of rain ended up adding up to quite a wet month.
